trump in trouble? the former president could be indicted this week for a fourth time. what georgia officials allege about trump's role in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. and midair scare. thousands of spectators at a michigan air show are shocked when pilots eject from a fighter jet moments before it crashes nearby. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we begin with the rising death toll from that historic wildfire that ripped across parts of the hawaiian island of maui. almost 100 have been confirmed dead and many are missing. the inferno is the deadliest u.s. wildfire in more than a century and over 2,500 structures have been destroyed. cbs' jessica kartalija has more from maui. >> reporter: good morning to you. officials here on the island of

maui are urging anyone who's still missing loved ones to please go out and get a dna test. the police chief says while they are going as quickly as possible, they are recovering these victims with respect and what they call aloha. search and rescue teams are going door to door in hard-hit lahaina with dozens confirmed dead and hundreds missing after last week's tragic wildfires. >> our people are suffering. we continue to work to find them. >> i heard terrifying screams. >> reporter: lahaina resident craig bradley captured this view. -- this video of the fire before escaping his home. >> i saw it going up and was like, i got to get out of here. that's when i ran back to my house, and i threw a few things in my car. >> reporter: with flames moving closer, bradley rescued two people who were trying to get away on a motorcycle. >> like motorcycle won't start. and so there's a chance that if i hadn't been there and waited until the last second i wouldn't have been able to save my two truth in sentencing.

-- my two friends. >> reporter: here donations are being collected to help the thousands who have been displaced and are relying shelters to get by. >> this is all we got right now. and donations. >> reporter: this man and his family now living in an encampment after losing their apartment. they hope to return home. >> i'm going to find a way to find a way to stay in the town that -- where i'm from, the place that i love. >> reporter: officials estimate the recovery will cost more than $5 billion, but that doesn't account for the emotional toll of what's being called the largest natural disaster in the state's history. only two of the victims have been positively identified so far, and only 3% of the area has been searched. >> jessica kartalija live for us in maui this morning. thank you so much. the devastation from the wildfires spread beyond the coastal area of lahaina into what's called the up country.

"cbs mornings" anchor tony dokoupil traveled to that region where he met with people coming to terms with what they lost and what they still have. >> reporter: in the hills of maui not far from the devastated coast, the fires have chewed through the upcountry grassland. in the kula region, more than $400 million in damage. nearly 700 acres burned, and almost 550 buildings affected. minutes from the airport, we spotted a team of locals looking for still-smoldering hot spots and hoping to snuff them out. mark joseph is a carpenter by trade. >> there's probably 60 or 70 that we put out today. put out another 100 yesterday. here around six hours. >> everything around is it scorched and burned and go. >> reporter: up the road monica loui owns the kula sandalwoods inn. tuesday morning she told me winds drove the flames straight toward her family property. >> we're putting out a fire by the cottage. we were dousing it with bottles

of water or garden hose because that's all we had. >> reporter: the moment came when they could no longer hold back the fire. >> we evacuated when the winds shifted and the flames became three and four-stories high, the embers started to rain on us, and we said it's time to go. >> reporter: she had expected to lose everything. how did you feel when you came back to this? >> it was a miracle because we left with it on fire. >> reporter: but the house that loui planned to renovate for her family didn't make it. you were going to live here. >> yes. >> reporter: on the one hand the inn still stands, what was it like to see that your future home is no more? >> it's sad. it was sad. >> reporter: tony dokoupil, cbs news. >> heartbreaking. coming up, tony dokoupil

will have more from maui on that fire aftermath and the recovery efforts now under way. an investigation is under way after five people were killed and three others injured when a house exploded in western pennsylvania. video from the neighborhood in plum shows the moment the home exploded saturday sending flames, smoke, and debris hundreds of feet into the air. three homes were destroyed, and at least a dozen more damaged. emergency responders reported people trapped under debris. dozens of firefighters were treated on the scene for minor injuries. officials say it could take months or even years to determine a cause of this blast. former president trump could soon be facing his fourth indictment in less than five months. a georgia prosecutor is expected to begin presenting evidence to a grand jury this week involving trump's alleged role in trying to overturn the state's 2020 presidential election results. cbs' nikole killion has more. >> reporter: an increased security presence outside the

♪ ♪♪ thousands of spectators watched as a retired russian mig-23 fighter jet crashed during an air show in michigan. there appeared to be an explosion before two pilots safely ejected moments before the crash. they landed in a lake. the plane burst into flames in a parking lot. officials say it hit some unoccupied cars, but no one was hurt. there is no word on the malfunction that led to the pilots ejecting. a police raid of a kansas city newspaper is being condemned, and there was a deadly plane crash in north carolina. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports two people were killed after a plane struck a power line and crashed into a lake in western north carolina. the faa says the single-engine plane was carrying two people

when it crashed into the lake yesterday after taking off from hickory regional airport, northwest of charlotte. at least 10,000 customers lost power for a while. the faa and ntsb are investigating. the "kansas city star" says a small town kansas newspaper was raided and shut down by police after investigating the recently hired local police chief. the publisher of "the marion county record" said the office of raided, seizing computers, phones, and other items. he says police raided his home. he says his 98-year-old mother, the co-owner of the newspaper, died saturday due to stress from that raid. the police chief said federal law does not protect journalists from searches if they are suspects in a criminal investigation. and the "los angeles times" says a smash-and-grab mob targeted a nordstrom's store in a brazen raid. police a say mob of
