mounting legal troubles. unrelenting heat. mllions of americans are still under excessive heat watches and warnings. a look at the problems the temperatures are causing. and americans kidnapped in haiti, the nurse and her daughter that were abducted while doing charity work in haiti. good morning. we're going to begin with the race for the white house. despite mounting legal problems former president donald trump is on the attack as he visits swing states that could decide the election. trump held rallies in iowa and pennsylvania over the bend as a possible third indictment could be handed down against him this week. some of his opponents aren't holding back. jarred hill is joining us with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are not just seeing former president trump defend himself against these allegations but use them really as a rally cry as he fights to turn his overwhelming support into actual

[ cheers ] former president donald trump on offense over the weekend in battleground pennsylvania. >> you know, they're not indicting me, they're indicting you. i just happen to be standing in their way. >> reporter: the gop frontrunner called out the doj just days after he was hit with more charges in the investigation into his handling of classified materials. among them allegations he tried to have surveillance video erased after getting a subpoena for documents. trump's former u.n. ambassador and now-presidential primary rival nikki haley argues the mounting legal troubles are why it's time to move on. >> we can't have a general election where we are handing it over to kamala harris because we're dealing with indictments and court cases and legal issues of president trump. >> reporter: the latest polling shows former president trump's legal woes haven't done much to hurt his campaign. polling in more than 50% of support, the next closest, florida governor ron desantis, at just over 15%. desantis in early primary state

new hampshire -- >> we need to be focusing on using our energy and resources on defeating biden and the democrats. >> reporter: those comments amid news a pro-trump pac has spent more than $40 million on legal expenses for the former president and his aides just this year. and speaking of which, today, carlos de oliveira, the mar-a-lago worker who was just charged in the classified documents case, is due in court again today. as a refresher, the doj here saying that de oliveira asked another mar-a-lago employee to delete security footage from trump's florida resort in order to keep it from being handed over to a federal grand jury. he says, quote, the boss told him to delete it. >> the boss. all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you. there are signs our economy is coming back to life despite rising interest rates. a brand-new cbs news poll shows americans are still worried about inflation. mark strassmann takes a closer look at the numbers. >> reporter: so far, so good for

the fed and its twin goals. chip away at inflation, but avoid a rock slide of job losses that could bury us in a recession. >> we've seen so far the beginnings of disinflation without any real costs in the labor market. and that's a really good thing. >> reporter: chairman powell's fed hiked interest rates again last week bringing them to the highest rate in 22 years. despite the high cost of credit, some sectors are booming. for example, construction, average gains of roughly 15,000 jbs a month over the last year. residential construction is especially hot despite rising interest rates. there's just so little existing inventory for sale. inflation has eased. last month prices were up 3% year over year. that's the smallest 12-month jump in more than two years. it's still higher than the fed's 2% target. >> i'm not here to declare victory on the economy. we have more work to do.

>> reporter: there's been significant progress considering america's unemployment rate, 3.6%, lingers at a historic low. while most people have paychecks, our new cbs news poll shows widespread pessimism about the economy. roughly two-third describe it as bad. most say the economy's struggling and uncertain. personally, 70% of working americans say those paychecks can't keep up with rising prices. most say at best financially they're staying in place. but more than one-third say they're falling behind. nearly half, 45%, think the biden administration's actions are increasing inflation. nearly two in three believe congressional republicans have nothing to show in the fight to tame inflation. the message -- millions of americans still feel hard times while the fed works to stick a soft landing with the economy. mark strassmann, cbs news,

atlanta. for the first time in about a month, phoenix, arizona, could see temperatures dip below 110 degrees today. the nation as a whole could actually see some relief from these brutal temperatures, but that doesn't mean the dangerous weather has passed. reed cowan takes a look at some of the problems that this relentless heat has been causing. >> reporter: a dangerous heat dome punishing the nation, the last week of july testing the mettle of millions. >> it's miserable. i work outside, so it's even worse. >> reporter: in denver, 90-degree days made for long nights for mom amanda morian. she's without air conditioning just like 10% of americans. >> i can't swaddle him at night because it's too much. >> reporter: this raging wildfire jumped international lines from washington state to british columbia. so far hundreds of fires across canada have burned a land mass the size of cuba. [ siren ] people across the u.s. are dialing 911 for help. the cdc's heat and health tracker shows the most e.r. visits last week were in the

west followed by the southwest and the florida panhandle. fire hydrants offering small con slagds for new yorkers while others seek relief at the city's 500 cooling centers. animals, too, getting help. at the l.a. zoo, chimps chomp on meat pops under misters while merekats munch on mice cubes. otters, they stay in the water feasting on frozen fish. all strategies to keep the animals safe with zookeepers looking for signs of distress. >> looking for lethargy, they call the vets immediately. they can be under veterinary care. >> that was reed cowan reporting. now it was a deadly weekend across our nation's skies. at least five small aircraft crashed in three states leaving several people dead. three people were killed in san bernardino, california, when a plane crashed into an airport hangar. police say the single-engine beechcraft was taking off at the time. no word on what caused the plane to lose control and crash, though. and in new hampshire, just

take a look at the moment this small plane slammed down into the water off hampton beach. lifeguard sprang into action and were able to pull the pilot out. amazingly, he was not hurt. and officials are scrambling this morning to try and help rescue a new hampshire nurse and her child who were kidnapped while working in haiti. alix dorsainvil and her daughter were abducted last thursday near port-au-prince, according to the nonprofit group she worked for. the u.s. state department issued a do-not-travel verizon in haiti and ordered nonemergency personnel to leave. it says it is aware of reports of the kidnapping two of u.s. citizens in haiti, and it is in contact with haitian authorities. in pakistan, dozens are dead after a suicide bombing during a political rally. you're looking at the moment the blasts went off near pakistan's border with afghanistan yesterday. officials say at least 44 died, and about 200 others were wounded. police say the bomber detonated a vest of explosives near a

officersrs pulling an unconscio passenger out of a burning car. this happened early saturday jujust west ofof fort wortrth. twtwo men werere in the cacar we vehiclcle struck a a light polo. the driviver was ablble to escan his own. both w were hospititalized andn expected to survive. the cause of the crash is under investigation. it's sentencing day for an idaho mom convicted of killing her two children. and a lawsuit filed by donald trump is thrown out. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports a federal judge has dismissed donald trump's $475 million defamation suit against cnn. the former president filed the suit in october claiming the network's use of the phrase "the big lie" in reference to trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election was unfairly associating him with adolf hitler. the judge ruled that all of the cnn statements that trump cited were opinion, and therefore didn't qualify as libel or slander.

"usa today" reports at least 30 dogs were found dead in ohio. the rescue hoarded animals. the butler sheriff's office found the deceased animals along with 90 living dogs which were seized. authorities say they found some of the dogs housed in a garage with no ventilation or air conditioning. the owner of the rescue faces charges of neglect and cruelty to companion animals. and "the deseret news" reports that lori vallow daybell will be sentenced to. -- today. the idaho mom faces life if prison without parole for murdering her two youngest children. she was also convicted of conspiring to kill tammy daybell, her husband's previous wife. vallow daybell's husband chad is awaiting trial on the same murder charges. the children, 7-year-old j.j. vallow and 16-year-old tylee ryan were last seen alive in 2019. still to come, paying back your student loan. how your monthly payments could

matt pieper has those stories and more in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: wall street saw all three indices ending with gains after a slew of earnings. the dow gained 176, the nasdaq was up 266, the s&p 500 taking in 44. a new way to pay back student loans. the biden administration is launchching a teststing websiti part of itits new incocome-driv student loan repayment plan today. it's called s.a.v.e. or the saing on a valuable education plan, and the site says it can significantly lower monthly payment amounts as compared to other income-driven payment plans. it comes as federal student loan payments are set to resume in october. shipping company yellow is no more. the nashville-based trucking company will file for bankruptcy. it had more than 12,000 trucks on the road moving freight from coast to coast for not only small businesses but also big ones like walmart and home depot.
