>> reporter: good morning. yeah, these new charges include obstruction, as you mentioned, as well as willful retention of national defense information. this morning we are hearing directly from former president trump himself about this. the department of justice unsealed a superseding indictment yesterday showing that former president donald trump has been hit with three new charges in the florida federal documents case. >> this is harassment. there is election interference. i'm protected by the presidential records act. >> reporter: he now faces accusations of conspiring to pressure a staffer to delete camera footage at his mar-a-lago estate in an effort to obstruct the investigation. >> evidence of obstruction of justice is like putting a piece of dynamite in front of the jury. it is devastating evidence. >> reporter: in another charge, the indictment refers to this audio recording obtained by cbs news which allegedly captures the former president showing an iran war plan to several people

without security clearances. it happened two years ago at his new jersey golf club. >> highly confidential, secret -- this is secret information. look at this. >> reporter: a third defendant, mar-a-lago worker carlos de oliveria, was also added to the case. he's expected to make his first court appearance on monday. the revelations came after trump posted on truth social that his attorneys had a productive meeting with the special counsel's office in washington yesterday. and days ago, the 2024 gop candidate revealed he received a letter indicating he's a target in the probe into efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. now some legal experts tell cbs news that the latest target letter indicates the special counsel has likely made up his mind to seek another indictment. former president trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. nothing, though, yet is set in stone in relation to that. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thanks a lot. severe weather continues to pound much of the nation.

a tornado touched down in southern new hampshire yesterday. this funnel cloud was spotted in the city of keene. there were reports of damaged buildings, downed trees, and power lines. in arizona, a storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of people. roofs were blown off mobile homes in the city of mesa. it comes amid an extreme heat that is impacting about half of the u.s. population. bradley blackburn has more. >> reporter: with extreme temperatures threatening tens of millions of americans, president biden is taking action. >> help is here, and we're going to make it available to anyone who needs it. >> reporter: the president is directing the u.s. labor department to ramp up protections for people working outside in the unrelenting heat. >> secretary of labor will work with our team to intensify enforcement increasing inspections in high-risk industries like construction and agriculture. >> reporter: last week a 25-year-old farm worker and father of two died in yuma amid the record heat wave in arizona.

summer's wildfires for killing more than 40 people while leaving thousands more homeless. ian lee, cbs news. north korea marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the korean war by holding a large military parade with foreign dignitaries. kim jong-un welcomed senior officials from china and russia to an evening military parade in the capital of pyongyang. north korea showed off its latest intercontinental ballistic missiles during the event. this is the first time foreign delegates were allowed into the country since the covid pandemic. fierce fighting raged in ukraine yesterday and overnight as the country launches a major push against russian troops. the video, this video apparently shows a ukrainian drone destroying a tank near bakhmut. ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy visited the port city of odesa yesterday which has been under nearly daily shelling for the past week. he visited a historic cathedral that was destroyed last week along with a medical center in

the city. nearly seven months after the brutal beating of tyre nichols, the justice department has launched an investigation into the memphis police department. the 29-year-old black man died three days after he was beaten by police during a january traffic stop. five former officers have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder charges, all of them are black. federal investigators will look into allegations the department has a pattern of racial discrimination and excessive force. and now to an important health alert. this week the centers for disease control warned of potentially life-threatening meat allergy caused by tick bites. as meg oliver reports, the alert comes as health officials report cases of tick-borne diseases are rising. >> reporter: last year, 53-year-old carmen stangota began suffering from fatigue, muscle spasms, and slurred speech. >> eight months of testing, six different doctors from primary, neurologist, ears, nose, and

throat, endocrinologist. >> reporter: the father of four from new jersey was finally diagnosed with lyme disease from a tick bite that didn't show the most common symptom -- a bull's-eye-like rash. >> there's good hours and bad hours. it impacts all the things you take for granted that you do every day. >> reporter: other symptoms include headaches, fatigue, and muscle aches. >> every summer we see an increase in tick-borne diseases. >> reporter: dr. lori handy says the number of ticks and tick-borne infections nationwide is on the rise, likely due to climate change. >> ticks can survive in different areas because it's warmer. so that then can lead to more infections in humans. >> reporter: to prevent an infection, doctors recommend wearing long clothes, using bug spray with deet, checking your body in a full-length mirror and put clothes in the dryer. >> turn it on high and if ticks remain on the clothes, it will kill that in about ten minutes. >> reporter: if you find a tick, grasp it with tweezers close to

wednesday of complications from lung disease. he was also known for his high harmonies on "take it easy" and "best of my love." he was 77 areas old. -- years old. a major awards show is being postponed, and cleanup costs continue to rise in a train derailment. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports norfolk southern says costs associated with february's train derailment in ohio has doubled to $803 million. the derailment near the ohio-pennsylvania border rleased hazardous chemicals and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. many complained of feeling sick. most of the costs are related to the ongoing cleanup at the site along with lawsuits, legal fees, and millions of dollars in community assistance. the "sun sentinel" reports on the near collision between an allegiant flight and a private gulf stream business jet. it happened sunday at an

altitude of 23,000 feet after the allegiant flight with 181 people on board took off from fort lauderdale headed to kentucky. allegiant says its pilots received an automated alert about another plane at the same altitude and had to initiate a climb. the allegiant plane returned to fort lauderdale where a flight attendant was treated for her injuries. "variety" says vendors for the primetime emmy awards have been told the show will not air as scheduled in september. it comes amid continuing strikes between writers and actors that have shut down production. this is first time there's been official word that the emmy date has been pushed back. of this year despite high inflation and more interest rate hikes. the country's gross domestic product grew by 2.4% rate in the april to june period. economists attribute that growth to consumer spending and more business investment signaling some economic recovery. anheuser-busch is slashing hundreds of corporate jobs. the parent company of bud light says it will lay off about 350 employees or less than 2% of its u.s. staff. the cuts are in response to a drop in bud light sales following a conservative boycott over the company's partnership with a transgender influencer and backlash to its decision not to defend that collaboration. and trader joe's is recalling nearly 11,000 cases of soup because they may contain bugs. the fda says the grocery chain's branded unexpected broccoli cheddar soup has insects in the frozen broccoli florets.
