justice after a popular restaurant owner was gunned down in front of his young son. >> you are a vile person and you need to be put away. >> the new lead in the case. meet the san francisco drag queen who is making history and getting paid to be an ambassador to the world. >> this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. talk about a shot of energy for a struggling downtown. right now there is a block party happening on the streets of san jose and the whole idea is to give businesses much needed exposure. so the party, well, it kicked off in the last half hour. what a party that is! looking for partygoers. we will see them pretty soon. let me tell you about the back story. the nonprofit urban vibrancy institute put it on. they will have live music from local artists and vendors lining up around fountain valley and post street. it is part of a larger effort to revitalize the downtown area which has

struggled to draw people back, clearly, since the pandemic. the goal is to hold more of these parties around the city. all right. san jose is betting on google to play a major role in the future of the downtown area, but construction on the mega campus is now on pause well the tech giant assesses how to move forward. len ramirez talks about how one business that was uprooted by the plans is now trying to start over. >> google says it is still committed to san jose and the massive downtown west project but the company now emphasizes that it could take as long as three decades to build out . in the meantime, blocks and blocks of land around the s.a.p. center have been fenced off and buildings demolished and the land now sits empty because the project s slowdown. some businesses have had to close and one literally had to move out of the way. >> right when you get up to here, this is when you start to

enter -- >> reporter: james still has not opened his restaurant because it was demolished when it stood in the way of the development. he excepted the google offer to buy his land and pay for the house to be moved. >> it is like any business you are starting. there is time and money that has to go into it again. we realize that it is not going to be the same poorhouse over there. we are starting something new. >> reporter: only the sign out front remains at the old location. the lot sits behind cyclone fencing, bacon just like the layers of other property that google bought that now face an uncertain timeline. the mayor says that he is not worried. >> i think that we are seeing commercial slowdown in this market. it is likely with interest rates being where they

are and companies taking a pause on hiring. with some companies it does not make a lot of sense to build right now. we have been through this many times. >> reporter: the transit-oriented downtown west project began before the pandemic and was approved for up to 7 million square feet of office space, plus retail parks and plazas. a spokesperson said that google is assessing how to best move forward well working to make sure that real estate investments match the future needs of hybrid workforce. to google it is a 10 to 30 year project but the company has not yet determined when the next phase will begin. >> i don't think google will come to downtown to begin the project if at all until they are going to make a lot of money by doing it. >> reporter: jo univtykell sner case when g with for-prof

companies. but while the project sits, google is moving into two other existing tech campuses in north san jose, and those campuses could also employ thousands of workers. >> we sold that land. google is the rightful owner . this might be in two years and it might be in 22 years. >> reporter: in the meantime, jane calls the uprooting bittersweet. >> bittersweet in that we had to move and they will not be working on it right now. however, at the time when the property is sold and the house is getting ready to move, the location that we have right here might have been gone. >> reporter: as a businessman he understands the importance of planning for the long-term, and like google he is taking the risk that it will pan out sometime in the future. >> google has estimated the impact of the project at $19 billion. it might mostly be about

bragging rights, but san jose has been knocked out of the top 10 most populous cities in the u.s. the numbers now put it in 12th place behind austin, texas and jacksonville, florida. the high cost of living and work from home trend play a part, but the san jose population was already falling before the pandemic with a peak of just over 1 million people in 2017. the man accused of the killing of bob lee told a san francisco judge he is not guilty. anne makovec has more on the case that nima momeni is laying out right now. the d.a. says that it does not hold water. >> reporter: the man accused of killing bob lee is staying in jail right now. the judge deemed him a flight risk. he has ties to iran, a country that does not hold an extradition treaty with the u.s. nima momeni planted not guilty , and his lawyer cited his ties to the city and the fact that he did not flee

between the stabbing and his arrest, but the judge said no. it has been six weeks since bob lee was found stabbed to death in the early morning hours after leaving his friend's apartment near the embarcadero. that friend is his sister, and court records show that many had concerns that the two might have used drugs together. mima left with lee. police said that they got out and momeni stabbed lead to death. the defense attorney said that if he had spoken with lee directly after the stabbing, he would have been able to explain himself. >> my defense is that it is an accident with a cross between self-defense and accident. there was no premeditation, deliberation, absolutely not. >> reporter: at the center of the argument is the kitchen knife that matches the kind

that his sister has in her apartment. it has his dna on the handle and lee's blood on the blade. >> there is no question in my mind that we have charged the person who killed mr. lee. >> reporter: lawyers are expected to speak before the next hearing date. thank you. other news we are following around the bay. it has been a year since a beloved oakland restaurant owner was shot to death in broad daylight in front of his young son. his son was among the family members who spoke to the media couple of hours ago, hoping to bring attention to his case. police say they are looking for leads but they do not know why the masked gunmen targeted here. it has become a community hub where family, friends and coworkers are

hoping for justice. >> we miss him so much and i know a lot of evil do. i want him to know that it is a priority and it is the oakland police department's priority to get justice for my brother. >> oakland police announced a $25,000 reward for information on the case. also in oakland, police are backtracking in their announcement of an arrest in a shooting that left a toddler with shrapnel wounds. it happened tuesday after a pair of purse snatchers approached the nanny as she pushed the stroller. they ran off after firing a shot into the ground, kicking up the shrapnel. meanwhile, we are hearing for the first time from the child's mother. she gave an emotional speech to a packed house at a public safety meeting last

night. as for why oakland police announced an arrest without there being one, it remains unclear. they told us officers made multiple arrests and recovered a firearm with a similar caliber to the recovered firearm in the case of injured child. popeyes has abruptly shut down one of its new locations after workers alleged -- after the alleged child labor violations and frequent violence at the restaurant. two teenage employees at the international boulevard location fired complaints with the state and they alleges they had seen managers fighting with customers and security guards getting violent. they also alleged that teens are working an legally petewe inappropriate ents om a manager. mpint that

was filed by employees, they say in part, we do not feel safe at work. recent violent incidents have shown that not only is management not taking sufficient action to protect us, but there is also an urgent lack of training at all levels. popeyes in response said based on the allegations made, we have shut down the restaurant and have started a swift investigation. we will not tolerate violence or violation of employment laws. if any of these allegations prove true we will take action against this franchise. on two contra costa county where crews put out a brush fire . it started in the westbound lanes just east of mcewan road. fire crews created a line around the fire and continued to mop up the area. as we head into summer, but we will see a lot more of these. .

made a big statement. the city appointed the first dragon laureate in the country. this is the longtime performer who is eager to define a new role as an ambassador for the drag queen community. >> it was an exciting day is a group of residents gathered to celebrate san francisco's first drag laureate. they say that this sends a message of inclusion. excitement fills the air as news is reds about the appointment of darcy drollinger as the city's first drag laureate. darcy is every local advocate for the community. she also started the nonprofit oasis art, supporting the work

community across the country. >> it is wonderful that san francisco is celebrating drag queens right now as drag across the country is being attacked. >> reporter: honey mahogany tells me that she hopes that the appointment can serve as an example for other states. >> we are seeing drag bands and bans on drag queens being allowed to perform in public. it is quite a scary thing. we also know that these bands are not only hurting drag queens, but some of them can impact trans or gender-nonconforming people as they go about their daily lives. >> that is why darcy says that she wants to amplify the unique perspective of the lgbtq plus community. >> west hollywood has also created a drag laureate program but has not yet announced a

selection. there is no backlash pouring in after the l.a. dodgers decision to disinvites the sisters of perpetual indulgence from the pride night. the san francisco-based group said that it mixes humor with religious imagery to address important lgbtq issues. the west hollywood chapter was set to be honored, but the catholic league pushed back. they said they removed the sisters because some people were offended and i did not want to distract from the event. one assemblyman called the decision outrageous and encourage the giants to invite the sisters to throw the first pitch at their pride night. on the flipside, san francisco archbishop salvatore corleone thanked the dodgers and went on to say, quote, hope everyone enjoys the game.

corner! we are getting closer and closer to memorial day. it feels like typical mayweather at least that we can see. let's take a look at the big picture pattern. if you are anticipating changes as we head towards the weekend, you will not have many of those in store. ground level, the weather that we experience on a day-to-day basis is not going to change very much. just subtle variations and temperatures. we are still going to have the onshore breeze for the next several days and the pollen count is not going to change very much. it looks like it dropped to the median category saturday, sunday and monday, and temporarily it is. but we are going to be straddling the line between the medium-high and medium categories. it is still mulberry, oak and grass pollen, but walnut pollen is getting closer to topping the list. looking pretty good from the santa clara valley. a little bit of haze on the eeseof ounde

erteaturesin san francisco and oakland and the warmer readings further inland. we are still holding onto 77 degrees right now in concord. the onshore breeze is noticeable and strongest along the coast, but even at sfo where the wind accelerates a bit, sustained winds are only 15 miles per hour. the onshore wind over the next several days will be noticeable but not strong. strong enough just to push some of that marine air into the inland valleys which feel refreshing late in the day. we will see the fog moving into the inland valleys as well but the sun comes up and rapidly goes to work burning the fog out of the valleys. should be clearing out even over san francisco by 10:00 and along the coast will take a little bit longer. i think you will see a t the may

gray will be tough to shake for coastal parts of the bay area. temperatures tonight drop down to the mid to low 50s which is close to where we should be this time of year. a slow warm-up where the fog takes longer to dissipate, so we are going to still be in the 50s along the coast by noon and barely above further inland, closer to 70 degrees. we will see a mix of a few spots hitting the low 80s tomorrow afternoon. some of the warmest spots are far inland and east of mount diablo likely to get up to 80 degrees. otherwise 70s inland, 60s around the coast. everybody said temperatures are within a degree or two of what is normal for the middle of may, which means good dog walking weather once again tomorrow. we have ella who is a k-9 weather watchers! we are going to see good conditions for her tomorrow in sonoma. fog giving way to abundant sunshine and those near normal temperatures reaching into the mid-70s. a little warm for darker-for pets, but otherwise you cannot complain about the

weather tomorrow. temperatures will wa a lile mor a little bit further into the 60s, likely to hit the low 70s for a couple of days sunday and monday. inland parts should reach to around or slightly above 80 degrees tuesday, wednesday and thursday. also, more of a warm up for inland parts of the east bay, then back to near normal tuesday, wednesday and thursday. we are likely to hold onto those near normal temperatures as we head towards memorial day as well. it is never too early to look ahead to the weekend and really never too early to look ahead to a holiday weekend. >> are viewers spotting animals going across the studio? that was a st. bernard, right? >> it was! it was a very large one. >> very cool. thank you. an asian-american ballerina is breaking barriers. norah o'donnell has more on

more drama surrounding the oakland a's moved to las vegas. the latest hurdle is the fight over how much public funding they can get. the nevada independent reports that the team is requesting nearly $400 million to construct a new stadium, but lawmakers are only able to contribute half of that. the a's announced an agreement with valles corporation to build a new ballpark on the strip near the tropicana, but it is subject to restrictions on public funding. the a's want to have the ballpark ready by the 2027 season. spring does not just mean baseball but also county fair season! families were out in antioch enjoying the contra costa county fare. we will see if we have a shot of it.
