and landed on top of a vehicle. this is in the emerald lake hills area where thinking this might have been a garage. you can see what might be a garage door attached to the records. no reports of injuries there. possibly the most disruptive wind event of the day. one of our coworkers actually got this video on his way into the station, and at that time, most of the westbound lanes were blocked. let's take you to a live picture right now, there is the traffic into the city. for of the lanes are now open, the far right lane is expected to stay closed through at 9:00, tonight. so, expect some delays. first alert meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the wind and when they will calm down, what is blowing in behind them, what we have next. take it away. >> a lot to talk about. first the wind, then the cold air, and then the rain and even some snow for some higher elevations in the bay area. peak wind gust we have experienced so far with this

first system moving through. 73 mile-per-hour gust reported an ocean beach but that is exceptional. a 68 mile-per-hour gust at sfo, that was over 60 miles per hour at the oakland airport. imagine taking off or landing with those gust. still breezy out right now but the strongest gust on the map at the moment is around 50 miles per hour so we have backed off slightly but it will be breezy as we enter the rest of tonight. high wind warning along the coast include san francisco and go through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. the gusty conditions will be here, gust up to 65 miles per hour. the rest of the bay area has a wind advisory through 1:00 p.m. tomorrow the wind will not be quite as strong. most of the gust in the inland valley's around 45 miles per hours, but some of the peaks could see 60 mile-per-hour gust. be prepared for wind damage and power outages through the rest of the night. tomorrow we will see scattered showers, hit or miss rain showers, more miss than hit but the potential is there for a bit of snow to add up into the santa cruz mountains and santa clara hills above 1500 feet in elevation. a better chance of snow for both of these locations and the

higher elevations of the north bay and diablo range will shape up over the next wave of widespread rain moving in thursday into thursday night and friday. up to 1 1/2 inches of rain for the most of the bay area which is enough as it falls during the commutes to mess up traffic. that is about the potential of enough snow to impede traffic in the santa cruz mountains on highway 9 and highway 17. is potentially, the snow level dropping to around the level of the callicott bridge on highway 24% is 1400 feet in elevation. that will be really close by friday morning. working out the rest of the week, thank you for keeping us updated. to fremont now, a powerful gust knocked a tree onto an apartment complex. jose martinez was all there all day today. >> reporter: that's right, this is a dramatic scene, a tree that fell here in this area of fremont. i am standing on top of what was the wall that divided these

two complexes. on this side, jim is with me, we will be careful over here, to show you what exactly happened on the other side but this is the real impact of what this complex looks like, right now. trees are all over this area and of course, some of the neighbors have been, family members in other areas, they heard the cleanup would continue tomorrow. today was a very stressful day for many of them. we were able to talk to one of them and this is what she said. >> as i turned into the complex, i noticed trees are blowing krejci, like krejci. and the tree to the right, i saw it just crashing down, falling. and i actually witnessed the first time ever in my life that

i have ever seen a tree right before my eyes just break and snap and tumble. it is going to get worse. >> that is right. >> reporter: this is a tree that rachel is talking about fixing lives on the other side of the other complex, and this is what it looks like on this side. now, the cleanup will continue tomorrow. incredible, it's a gigantic tree that fell, dividing these two communities. of course, we will keep you updated on how this goes because the wind is not over. back to you in studio. >> jose, thank you. a similar scene across the bay in redwood city, where a huge tree nearly split this home and half a neighbor told us the woman who lives there was home at the time, thankfully, she was not injured. taking you to the north bay where one home in mill valley has been red tagged tonight. that fallen tree punched a hole in the roof of the building, which is now unsafe to enter. no one was inside of the time.

>> we are short of in shock. i'm in shock seeing at. i'm very grateful that no one was in the house. right? no one got hurt. yeah. so, it will be taken care of, but wow, this will take a while. >> the blessing is that no one got hurt, as she said. this is what we could could see from the street. we are told there might be more damage on the backside. 20 miles to the north, in novato, a neighborhood near a middle school was ordered to shelter in place after power lines came down. this happened along wilson avenue. people who were not home had to stay out. >> the tree next door to my house fell and took out the power lines. i can't get back there. i will find someplace i can go, but it's a waiting game right now. >> pete yanity was able to restore some power to the area quickly but they are still fixing the polls.

the latest numbers from pete yanity show that more than 112,000 customers are without power right now. nearly half of them on the peninsula, and close to 130 south bay. we have seen similar scenes all around the bay area today. and michael vick in studio with us now with more images of all the wind damage our crews have been collecting and viewers have been sending in. >> we have been tracking this from the north bay down the coast, juliette. this was sent in from the santa rosa fire department. they tweeted this video saying they responded to several wind related incidents with downed power lines, trees into cars, and an elevator rescue, then a carport and a portion of roof blown off of a home. if you are a car lover this one will make you cringe in san francisco. this corvette was smashed by a tree and a light pole that came down. this is on clay and battery. luckily it was parked and nobody was inside at the time. to the peninsula, another tree came down, on a san bruno.

significant damage done there. the video of fallen shingles, some very powerful gust of wind right off the roof and blew them onto the lawn below. as you mentioned, out of all the damage we have been showing you we have yet to tell you about anyone actually getting hurt. >> that is so true. all of the stories i have been reporting today we have not heard that. round two is coming. >> is a corvette? >> yeah, that's rough. >> stay with cbs news bay area for continuing first alert weather coverage through this newscast and through the night. it's official, bay area congressman barbara lee is jumping in the race to replace senator dianne feinstein in 2024. she is the third candidate announcing her bid, along with congress members adam schiff and katie porter, both of southern california.

katie nielsen and spoke with a longtime oakland community leader who knows lee well. she also got some perspective from a bay area political scientist. >> reporter: barbara lee has been a fixture in the oakland community ever since she took office about 25 years ago. those who worked closely with her say they are excited about the possibility of having someone with roots in this community to have a major voice in washington. >> reporter: nisha bob jackson has been a lead pastor in oakland since 1984. and has worked closely with presented of barbara lee since she first took office in 1998 book >> she has brought money to oakland for a number of things that we have been able to do. we would not have been able to to do it without her support. >> reporter: bishop bob says he and lee founded the african- american chamber of congress together 13 years ago. she has a different perspective

than most politicians on the issues minority committees are facing. >> reporter: he says that while the church cannot endorse a specific candidate, he feels that lee's voice is one that needs to be heard in the senate. >> i think it would be great for somebody for expertise and experience, the longevity she has seen in politics as a black woman, she's been through it all. >> reporter: in the history of the united states there have only been 11 black senators and of those, only two were women. >> what barbara represents safari's historic. >> reporter: david mcewen is a political science professor at sonoma state university and says lee is well-established in california's politics and was shortlisted to fill kamala harris is empty senate seat when she became vice president. >> even governor newson habs noted that the replacement for dianne feinstein should be a woman of color. barbara lee fits that. >> reporter: mcewen says the biggest challenge will be fundraising. >> california's senate race next year has the potential to set spending records and the potential to be the most

expensive u.s. senate race ever . that will challenge someone like barbara lee to raise a lot of money and keep up with the other candidates, because it is very expensive to run a statewide in california. >> reporter: of those who have announced their candidacy to fill dianne feinstein's senate seat, adam schiff has reported that he has $20 million of his campaign war chest. katie porter has reported 7.7 million, and barbara lee has $55,000 on hand, according to her last filing in late november. could and east bay school district start banning books? the big debate tonight about one specific reading assignment. also, new images released in connection to a heinous crime which left a 100-year-old man dead. the information police are looking for, to help solve this crime.

with the accident. it is described as a 10 mini cooper. the crash happened at the intersection of 19th and harrison street early sunday morning. there is a $1000 reward being offered in this case. right now, san ramon valley unified school district is opening up a conversation on the idea of banning books. board members are now voting on a ban -- not writing just yet but will be informing people about the process of banning specific books. this comes as a book dealing with lgbtq topics, called gender career is raising concerns among parents. other books the board is expected to discuss include push, and lawn boy. parents and social media claim of these two books discuss explicit sexual contact like incest and pedophilia. looking live outside of san francisco, look at that middle camera there. is that the wind? >> that is the wind shaking the camera. >> i'm an investigator, there. oakland and san jose all have

strong wind, as we all felt today. let's check in with paul heggen for the first alert weather. this will happen all week, i told. >> first alert weather day tomorrow because the wind advisory continues through 1:00 p.m. first alert weather days wednesday and friday which is where he could see rain messing up the commute and snow in the higher elevations. yes, snow, even in the bay area. let's get into the details on what is causing this, a storm system will be camping out for the next several days, and different little aspects of the storm system, if it ripples of energy rotating around the heart of it. think of it as a spokes on a wheel. one of them will move out, squeeze the atmosphere a bit more and give us a better chance more widespread rain and some snow in the higher elevations. dropping down to 1500 feet or less by the time we get into friday. the wind is the problem in the short term. gusty wind right now, the strongest gusts as of the top of the hour at 7:00, we are just over 50 miles per hour.

these are likely the strongest wind we will experience the rest of the night. but, the wind will still be blustery out, especially along the coast, early tomorrow morning, and noticeable further inland. 25 to 35 mile per hour gusts through early afternoon. the wind advisory through 1:00 p.m. at that point the wind will backdown slightly but we are still talking about 20 to 30 mile-per-hour gust into the evening hours. both hands on the wheel, keep your eyes out when you're on the record in case of more tree branches or entire trees falling. we will see the wind coming down to a greater extent after the sun goes down tomorrow evening, continuing into early thursday morning. is when our focus shifts to the additional moisture headed our way to the possibility of showers over the next few days with a will be more miss than hit, tonight and tomorrow but just a little bit skirting through the santa cruz mountains, and the santa clara hills to produce a coating of snow, maybe a couple of inches at the highest elevations, above 2000 feet. the better chance of more widespread rain and then widespread snow as you climb in elevation will shape up beginning by midafternoon on thursday with the heaviest rain falling thursday evening and continuing thursday night. it is going to be snow in those higher elevations.

early friday morning, snow levels will drop down to the lowest level, potentially below 1500 feet between northbay mountains, around more snow falling in the santa cruz mountains and around matt hamilton, but also in the east bay hills, in the diablo range, snow levels dropping down to the point, you'll see snow levels that usually we don't around the bay area. then we will be tapering off into mid and late morning on friday. how much snow are we talking about? in the santa cruz mountains, the potential for a few inches to fall. with computers say is falling will not necessarily land on the ground. contacted down by additional flakes landing on top of it, but a couple of inches of snow a commissioner possible in the highest east bay hills. a few inches of snow on top of mt. diablo and with heavier amounts further north into northern sonoma and napa counties and hefty commissions on top of that for much of inland mendocino county and lake county. most of us in the lower elevations, below 1000 feet, which is where the bulk of the bay area's population lives will see 1 to 1 1/2 inches of total rainfall.

this should make a difference in terms of long-term drought conditions but it will be a cold and and pleasant rain that falls thursday to friday. temperature is not dropping down to the 30s inland with 40s around the bay. highs tomorrow don't warm-up a lot. highs topping out in the upper 40s and 50s but that is a solid 15 degrees below average, even by late february standards. alert days the next three days, we get a break in the action on saturday, and then another sequence of systems will be dropping down towards us with more shower activity for sunday, monday, and into tuesday of next week. even the potential for lowering snow levels in that timeframe, something we will continue evaluating as we get closer to the last days of february. >> thank you. the bay area could get its first professional women's sports team. meet brett from apartment 2b. he's not letting an overdraft alert get him stressed. he knows he's covered with zero overdraft fees when he overdraws his account by fifty bucks or less. overdraft assist from chase. make more of what's yours.

time is running out for the oakland a's to find a new home. concerns about affordable housing are stalling plans to build a waterfront ballpark at howard's terminal, and their lease is expiring with the coliseum. while the a's are trying to leave, there could be a new team entering the arena. women playing professional basketball in oakland could soon become a reality. as kelsey florida explains, bringing a wnba franchise would be an inspiration, certainly for young girls who live and breathe basketball. >> reporter: meet oakland's own lady rebels. these girls, ranging in age from

7 to 12, are a force to be reckoned with. they come from around the east bay, and are not scared to take on any team, girls or boys. >> the lady rebels biggest fan is her dad. he was the one who pushed the storied oakland rebels program to create a girls team. >> when you see them practicing, their players are different from boys, you know, they just play with so much more fight, and so much more hunger, you know, they wanted. >> literally himself played for the rebels as a kid. so of course, he wanted to pass the love for basketball down to his kids, including his daughter. >> i love it. have been here 35 years. i wouldn't change it for nothing in the world. i got my legacy, both my sons play and my daughter is playing now. >> reporter: all of the lady

rebels are huge basketball fans. many of them have older brothers have played the sport, and if you have even gone to an nba team were too. >> do you want to go to a wnba game? do you think that would be cool to see girls play? >> yeah. >> reporter: that wish may soon come true. the city of oakland is pushing to get a wnba team to call the oakland arena home. if that would happen, these girls would find themselves practicing just a few miles away from some of the best players in the world. for their coaches and their parents. the inspiration of a lifetime. spark that would be a good thing for the girls. all the girls. there's a lot of young ladies that love this sport. the play with so much passion. >> reporter: it's a passion that can be seen in all of these girls, and one they say they will be first in line to see in the wnba players.

turkeys disaster management authority says mondays 6.4 killed six people and injured nearly 300 including 18 incredible condition right now. the united nations delegation visited northern syria to assess the damage today. in los angeles county, family and friends welcome home search and rescue crews returning from turkey. the group was determined to help
