derailment in ohio. michael regan tried to reassure frustrated residents that the air and water around east palestine are safe. some people have complained of headaches, respiratory issues, and other symptoms. roxana saberi is there. >> reporter: east palestine resident melissa blake says two days after the toxic train derailment doctors diagnosed her with acute bronchitis from chemical fumes. >> hard to breathe. my chest is always tight. the coughing. >> reporter: what kind of help do you and your neighbors need? >> actually it's just the truth. >> we all know -- >> reporter: at a town hall, residents demanded to know how safe they are now living at home. fi hazar cls e satisfied with -- released during the derailment and fire, local and federal authorities say right now the air is safe, and so is the

drinking water from five town wells. still, on a visit to east palestine, epa administrator michael regan vowed to hold norfolk southern accountable. >> let me be clear -- epa will exercise our oversight and our enforcement authority under the law. >> reporter: the railway says it's removing contaminants from the ground and streams and offering more residents financial aid. today families like this lined up for a $1,000 check per person. $1,000 enough? >> probably not. honestly. it's probably not. but it will help for now. >> reporter: they live just over a mile from the derailment and drink bottled water because flay don't trust the water tests. >> one of the main reasons we came back is because of my son and school. otherwise, we probably wouldn't have come back yet. >> reporter: the family plans to join one of several class-action lawsuits launched against the railroad company. as for the water, the epa is still encouraging people who rely on private wells to drink

bottled water until their water is tested. roxana saberi, cbs news, youngstown, ohio. a severe storm system continues to barrel across the country this morning. yesterday suspected tornadoes popped up across northern mississippi, downing trees and damaging a gas station. the same weather system brought snow to southern wisconsin causing dangerous travel conditions including where this tractor-trailer wrecked. the system will move across the east coast today with rain, snow, and strong winds as temperatures plunge behind the storm. president biden says he hopes to speak with china's president following the chinese spy balloon incident. this morning china says there cannot be a dialogue until the u.s. works with china to steady relations. meanwhile, mr. biden provided new details about the three objects brought down by the u.s. last weekend. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning.

so president biden reiterated what officials have been saying for a couple of days now, that those objects were most likely harmless and essentially acknowledged that the u.s. went with a shoot first, ask more questions alert approach. a reaction to china's suspected spy balloon. he wants new protocol to help decide when and how to act. president biden says the three objects shot down this past weekend, the ones over alaska, canada, and michigan, are likely not tied to the chinese spy balloon a u.s. fighter jet took down off the coast of south carolina nearly two weeks ago. >> the intelligence community's current assessment is that these three objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation, or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research. >> reporter: the president said his administration will establish new protocols for when such objects should be shot down. that would be shared with congress privately. >> i've directed my team to come back with sharper rules for how

we will deal with these unidentified objects moving forward. >> reporter: there have been growcafrawrs thesident some republicans say he should have done it sooner. >> the administration has a tendency in my judgment to ignore problems. >> reporter: a hobby group says its homemade balloon went missing last weekend, the statement day the unidentified object was shot down over canada. there's also growing evidence that china did not intend for its balloon to cross over the continental u.s. winds may have blown it off course from guam and hawaii, all the way to alaska. >> make no mistake, if any object presents a threat to the safety, security of the american people, i will take it down. >> reporter: each one of those missiles used to shoot down the mystery objects cost about half a million dollars. so on the issue of u.s./china relations, president biden has been careful in his language about the country saying that he want competition but not conflict. but as we heard there, he's

still not backing down on the decision to shoot down that suspected spy balloon that did end up flying over the u.s. >> indeed. jarred hill in new york. thank you. pennsylvania senator john fetterman checked himself into a hospital to seek treatment for clinical depression. that's according to his office. fetterman continues to struggle with the effects of a stroke he suffered last may. the 53-year-old freshman senator spent two days at a hospital last week after becoming lightheaded. nikole killion reports. >> reporter: pennsylvania senator john fetterman is being treated at walter reed national military medical center for clinical depression after being evaluated by the attending physician of the u.s. congress monday, then checking himself in wednesday night. his office said in a statement, "while john has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks." his wife tweeted, "i'm proud of him for asking to help and getting the care he needs." clinical psychologist dr. sue varma says patients may check

themselves in because symptoms of depression can be severe. >> they're feeling very depressed, hopeless, helpless, low energy, difficulty falling asleep. and they might have thoughts of wanting to harm themselves. >> reporter: on capitol hill, an outpouring of support from chuck schumer to rank and file colleagues. did you see any signs of this? >> you know, i think we've been worried about him just because of his health. >> reporter: the freshman democrat just got out of the hospital last week after suffering from lightheadedness, although doctors cleared him in two days after a round of tests. the former pennsylvania lieutenant governor suffered a stroke last may which forced him to take time off the trial during an intense campaign for u.s. senate. >> we already knew that was going to be a challenge given somebody that's in recovery of actually having a stroke. >> reporter: the american stroke association says post-stroke depression is common, affecting about a third of stroke survivors. several senators tell me they hope fetterman's disclosure reduces some of the the stigma around mental health so that others can get the care they need.

nikole killion, cbs news, capitol hill. charges could soon be placed after a georgia special grand jury investigating donald trump and his allies said one or more witnesses may have lied under oath. that finding was among the details when part of the grand jury's report was released yesterday on alleged election interference. robert costa has more. >> reporter: for more than seven months, allies close to former president donald trump have appeared in atlanta behind closed doors to speak under oath about his relentless efforts to overturn president biden's 2020 victory in georgia. now the special grand jury haied ended charges be filed. the report did not identify who but 75 witnesses have been part of the grand jury's work, including longtime trump lawyer rudy giuliani, georgia governor

brian kemp, and south carolina senator lindsey graham who was asked today if he was confident in his testimony. >> yes, i'm very confident. have no idea what they're going to do. >> reporter: the district attorney launched her investigation after a recording showed trump's pressure campaign on top georgia officials including republican secretary of state brad raffensperger. >> i got to get -- i have to find 12,000 votes, and i have them. >> reporter: despite trump and his allies' repeated false claims that the state's vote of rigged -- >> there's no way we lost georgia. >> reporter: the entire grand jury agreed no widespread fraud took place in the georgia 2020 presidential election. most of the report remains under seal, but the judge overseeing the case says it does include a roster of who should or should not be indicted. georgia state law professor clark cunningham said he expects trump to be on that list. could trump be indicted? >> i think i will be surprised if he's not eventually indicted. >> reporter: the district attorney here recently said that decisions are imminent, and if

bruce willis' family issued an update on his health, and relief efforts in turkey are shifting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "reuters" reports rescues are dwindling in turkey after the devastating earthquake. a 17-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed apartment block just yesterday, though, more than ten days after the quake hit. aid agencies are focusing on helping millions left homeless. the aid effort in syria has been hampered by the country's 12-year-old civil war. the death toll in turkey and syria is now more than 42,000. "variety" says bruce willis has been diagnosed with dementia. the 67-year-old retired from acting last year after he was diagnosed with aphasia. it impacts a person's ability to communicate. yesterday his family issued a statement saying his condition has progressed into frontotemporal dementia. it affects behavior, language, and movement. willis' family said as his

condition advances they hope media attention will shine a light on the disease. and espn reports on the death of all-star catcher and hall of fame broadcaster tim mccarver. the baseball hall of fame announced that mccarver died yesterday in memphis. he won two world series titles -- with the st. louis cardinals in the 1960s and was one of the few players to appear in the major leagues in four different decades. mccarver had a long television career after retiring in 1980. he was an analyst for a record 24 world series. tim mccarver was 81. still to come, tesla recall. why hundreds of thousands of vehicles with a self-driving system are being investigated. this man needs updated covid protection. so does she. yup, these guys too. because covid is still out there, and so are you. and if your last vaccine was before september 2022,

well, tesla announces an urgent recall, and moderna says that it will continue to offer free covid vaccines. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: all three major indices slipped thursday as newly released inflation data worries investors. the dow lost 431 points. nasdaq was down 214, and the s&p 500 lost 57. tesla is recalling almost 363,000 cars with its driver-assist software due to safety concerns. the company's full self-driving feature is supposed to steer, brake, and accelerate on its own, but the national highway traffic safety administration said based on its analysis, the feature led to an unreasonable risk and could violate traffic laws. tesla says the software fix will
