they can, and reading scouring the area for evidence and interviewing witnesses, people who were there at the time. what we have noticed about this mushroom farm is that it sort of pans out here it is kind of a maze. it's quite large. countless rows of the green houses. then you see these areas, which i am assuming is just part of the mushroom growing process. it's a huge complex. on the side, you see those trailers. unclear if this is part of the office building or if those are places where people were living . at the time, you can see the emergency vehicles scattered around the different parts of this mushroom farm. this is one of two locations. the other off of highway 1 that was near a trucking supply area. kind of an industrial complex. that was not as large, but did kind of have a mix of different businesses and then a daycare as sarah was mentioning. that was not far away from that area. both of these different locations, these two crime scenes completely blocked off

right now, as crews worked to just gather evidence and do an investigation, which we can only assume is going to take multiple days and take law enforcement agencies. >> let's go back to our cameras on the ground. len ramirez is standing by live with an update. >> starting to be more activity here as investigators equipped with lights. the attempt to light up the crime scene is making its way into this area of the mushroom farm. they are one of several units that have been called out here to the scene for the sheriff's office. san mateo county sheriff's office. you can see the crime scene is somewhere in the cluster of buildings. the you see people coming and going.

we've also heard that there might be some sort of a statement for the public great statement for the media happening at the sheriff substation, happening in just about half an hour or so. they are trying to work on that. i just spoke with one of the deputies. they said they were trying to get a statement for the public. hopefully, a lot more. it's a tight scene. you can see the crime scene tape and people coming in and out. it looks like they are setting up for what will be a long-haul type of investigation. with potentially multiple fatalities at this location. we don't know the exact number. but we have been told that it could be four or more. these things tend to go from initial report of maybe one or two and then as things progress, the numbers sometimes go up. it's a very difficult

scene. we now might have to move the camera. it's a very tight location here and sheriff's vehicles are coming and going as we speak. very important for law enforcement responders to piece together what happened here with obviously a tragic consequences for some of the victims here. >> the sheriff's department will be holding some kind of briefing. quick question for you. can you give us ace go of the first amount of first responders on the scene? csi, different forensics vehicles going in and out? you cannot probably see from our vantage point from chopper 5, it looks like multiple crime scenes within the farm area. >> reporter: that could very well be. we can only see as far as, you know, the cluster of buildings down the road here. here is another forensic lab. kind of exiting the area. units are coming and going. there is

situation where there are two crime scenes. one at the mountain mushroom farm off of san mateo boulevard. the other off of highway 92, cabrillo highway at a trucking facility. we have confirmed that there are seven people that are dead. suspect taken into custody. no more danger to the community there. right now, you can see this is over mountain mushroom farm in half moon bay. it is a large complex. some housing and trailers in the area. warehouse and office buildings, as well. the chopper pans out a little bit more and you can see some greenhouses. there you go. kind of a wider view of the area there. again, sheriff's just confirming seven people are dead following this shooting

that started at about 3:00 this afternoon. two locations, as i just mentioned. mountain mushroom farm and the trucking facility off of cabrillo highway, right by the half moon bay border. the suspect, a couple of hours later, after a very strong police presence from both of these different shooting locations, responded to the half moon bay sheriff substation where i suspect, we are told, was taken into custody. unclear if the individual actually turned themselves in or not. we are hearing conflicting reports. but we do know that the suspect in this -- seven people dead -- is in custody right now. we have just gotten confirmation in the sheriff's office that seven people are dead shootings. >> you mentioned there are multiple crime scenes here. two crime scenes. just focusing on cabrillo highway at the supply area. then the mountain mushroom's farm area. if we take the shot again, there are at least two or three areas

that they are focusing on just within this farm area. this is going to be a very complicated and long investigation. when we went to to len ramirez, we saw those giant lights that were moving in. this is going to be an extremely long night for investigators as they continue to try to piece together exactly what happened. once again, as you mentioned, the sheriff department confirms seven people are dead and >> saw kind of a large group of law enforcement vehicles exiting the mountain mushroom farm there. some vehicles also going in. we have seen from above the there are multiple locations. mountain mushroom farm location for the shooting that they are looking into right now. it is unclear, the circumstances of those two areas within the farm. sarah has been keeping an eye on the second location that we are talking about off of highway 1. what have you learned so far? >> we just heard from a woman who saw the suspect being taken

into custody. you will recall that our cameras were there when it happened, both on the ground and from above. our helicopter crew was there at the exact moment he was placed into handcuffs. multiple deputies walked him into that substation. it appears they perhaps drove him away to another location not long after. the sheriff's office has confirmed now, tragically, seven people are dead. and the suspect is in custody. this is the situation we saw there. one witness described the scene. let's take a listen. >> they had their guns drawn. they approached from behind the car. pretty tight formation. and got up to the car and were probably a few feet behind it, six feet behind it or so and asked him to get out. it took several asks and he got out of the car and eventually, he was taken down to the ground by them. >> that is the scene that we did not capture on camera. the moment when he was taken out of

what we believe was a rather lexus suv. then we caught up with him once he was put into handcuffs and walked into the substation. details are unfolding by the minute. we are expecting a briefing from the sheriff's department right around 6:00. multiple crews on the ground. we will bring you that life here on kpix and a streaming on cbs news bay area. back to you. >> at least , from the witness account, we got conflicting reports of whether or not the suspect actually drove himself to the substation. it appears, according to that witness, the officers and the deputies confronted this gentleman while he was in his vehicle. that can maybe confirm that he turned himself in. >> he was at least on the property of the sheriff's substation when they took him into custody, presumably in his own vehicle. i am sure we are going to get more information on their briefing at about 6:00 today. but what we have just confirmed in the last couple of minutes, seven people are dead

in these shootings with two different locations. you are seeing aerial pictures here and also, this industrial trucking park over on highway 92 off of cabrillo highway on the border of half moon bay. the suspect is in custody. taken into custody at his own car at the half moon bay sheriff's substation. unclear how the individual got there. actually to the sheriff's office. but we heard from eyewitness saying it was quite the operation to place the individual under arrest. a lot of different officers responding. what we caught on camera was him actually being put into handcuffs. getting out of the car was a tricky scenario, it sounds like there. this is one of the locations, one of the shooting locations you are seeing photos of her now. this is aerial footage of mountain mushroom farm. 1 of 2

different shooting locations. of course, all of this unfolding at about 3:00 this afternoon. a little less than an hour ago, we were told the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a bigger sheriff's headquarters in half moon bay. again, just confirmed with the sheriff that seven people are undead. unclear how many were killed at either of these locations. we are going to hear more from the sheriff's office. here is the live view from the ground there and this is presumably outside the mountain mushroom farm, as well. >> as you mentioned, there is several locations. at least two on the area. the developments, the way this happened today. the shooting came down. reports came down around 3:00 this afternoon. 5:00. one of those crime scenes. suddenly, that

suspect arrives. it appears that this is the substation. that's the lexus right there. we believe the suspect drove himself to the substation where he was taken out of that vehicle and taken into custody. believing he did turn himself in. that is not until after seven people were confirmed dead in at least two shootings in two separate locations. right now, you can see the light is starting to fall. the investigators and forensics teams moving in those giant lights. it's going to be an extremely long night. this is one of the scenes on the area. the second location and the residential area. we saw a lot of yellow tape around the area. indicating some bullet casings have fallen on the ground. detectives seem to be very interested in that one particular greenhouse up there on the center of your screen. you can see the door open.

continuing to focus their on the investigation. this will be an extremely long night of complicated investigations. you are talking about multiple places where they've got to look. the good news is that the suspect is in custody. no threat to the public at this time. sadly, seven people confirmed dead. >> that is one of the main locations they are looking at. they are also looking at this location over bison trailers. that is also possibly where some folks who work on the farm, that is possibly where they live. just to give you an idea of where this is in half moon bay. a very popular place to live because it's beautiful and a lot of commuters are moving to that area for good reason. you get the best of both worlds, maybe working in the city and getting a little bit more peace and quiet when you go to half moon bay. it is still very much an artist and agricultural community. a lot of these farms are still there. getting in and out is complicated. a lot of two-lane highways and roads. which is by

design. people want to keep it that way. when you are talking about cases like this, it can be very difficult to get into these locations for law enforcement and then, for the folks who live there, to get out. right now, they are doing a lot of investigating on the ground as to what specifically happened. as i can imagine, they are also making contact with loved ones of these victims. seven people confirmed dead. sarah, down in the newsroom, has been keeping an eye on the developments going on down there. >> we are learning more about the suspect in the shooting whom, as we have been reporting, has turned himself in. law enforcement reiterating that there is no longer a threat to the public. we believe he turned himself in. still waiting to clarify that. minutes ago, we received a photo and do some identification. he has been identified as a 67-year-old. this is the photo provided to

us. pretty dramatic pictures. cameras were there when he was taken into custody at the sheriff substation in half moon bay. again, the sheriff's office has confirmed seven people are dead tonight. they are investigating two separate shooting scenes. we did get a tweet from governor gavin newsom minutes ago. i want to show that to you here in just a moment. he was at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting. when i get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting in half moon bay. tragedy upon tragedy. what he was referring to was the monterey park shooting. another mass shooting down in southern california that happened days ago. he had been in monterey park meeting with people at the hospital and getting briefed on what happened there. now we got this situation here in half moon bay were seven people have been killed. this is the first time we are seeing a name for the suspect and his age as well as

presume that investigators will be here for some time processing the scene and gathering evidence. right now, information is still limited. i did speak to a partner of someone who manages the mushroom farm that she tells me is located just down the road there. first spoke to her partner when he left for work this morning and has been unable, unfortunately, to get in touch with him. as you can understand, she is very anxious at the time. we do not yet know the identities of the victims. we are told by authorities that the bulk of the seven victims were killed at the location behind me. the manager of the mushroom farm tells me she fears her partner may be one of the victims. again, we are waiting more to hear more information. we will get it to you as soon as we get it. >> thank you so much. just to confirm, now that i have you

our understanding, this is the location of a second mushroom farm. >> betty, we were hearing reports that there could be a daycare near the area. have you heard any kind of confirmation of that? >> reporter: unfortunately, we have not heard confirmation of that at this site. the sheriffs are not speaking to the media. they are just trying to keep the crime scene intact as they gather more evidence at this time. >> we are getting video of this woman that i believe is the same woman you spoke to on the phone. very visibly distraught. not knowing where their loved one is. it has to be just an agonizing time for some of these family members as they wait desperately to get a hold of their loved ones. betty, can you give us a little bit more

of what she said to you when you spoke to her? >> she was very distraught when i spoke to her. she has been on the phone, as you saw in the video. just trying to get any information. that information is very limited at this time. when i last spoke to her, she was told by authorities to go to a second location where they will be updating loved ones, potentially, of victims. she does not know if her partner is one of those victims. she tells me that he left for work this morning. a manager at a mushroom farm located here behind me in the distance. she has not been able to get in touch with him since he left for work. i will be keeping in touch with her. hopefully, she will be updated in the coming hours. >> not knowing what the status is of your loved ones. not being able to get a hold of them or get any information yet. the sheriff's office is

also scrambling to find next of kin for some of these victims. seven people are confirmed dead. three of them were killed just at the scene there on highway 1 by the trucking complex. both of them are actually mushroom farms. you are looking at a live picture of the mountain mushroom farm off of san mateo boulevard there. multiple emergency vehicles. some emergency vehicles. some coming in with big lights in the area. it's not a very well lit area. it gets very, very dark at night. as you can imagine, this investigation will take multiple days and probably involve both state and national resources that are going to have to come in to figure out what happened here at this scene that all unfolded starting at 3:00 this afternoon. right now, we are trying to piece together exactly what happened at these

different locations. >> the pieces are starting to fall into place as we learn more and more on the details of exactly what happened in half moon bay. we are expecting some type of statement and media briefing from the sheriff's department. that was supposed to happen about a half-hour ago. i am sure they will try to figure out what exactly they can confirm. but according to betty yu, three of the people who were shot and killed, three victims were at the trucking company. we have learned there is a second mushroom farm on that property. that is the second crime scene. you are looking at the first location, the mountain mushroom farm area. that information is correct, then that would leave for victims at this location. there are at least two different locations within this complex. one of them was this greenhouse area where they believe they do grow these mushrooms. the other was a place where there was a series

of trailers in place. rvs and shacks and tarps. crime scene yellow tape was up in the area and evidence markers are down on the dirt road there as investigators are now moving into the giant lights. getting ready for a very long night of this investigation. i believe this is the second location. we were calling this a trucking supply company off of cabrillo highway. according to betty yu, we have learned that there is a second mushroom farm behind the area. >> the sheriff is expected to give an update at the half moon bay sheriff's substation in the next couple of minutes. we will bring that to you live. but what we just learned, there are two separate locations. both of them are actually mushroom farms. the second is a smaller location off of highway 1. the other off of san mateo boulevard at mountain mushroom farm. we have confirmed that seven people are dead. three of

them killed at that location and as ryan said, four killed at the bigger location at mountain mushroom farm. lots of different agencies responding to this at the mountain mushroom farm location off of san mateo boulevard. all of this happening in half moon bay. we've seen sheriffs, fire department, paramedics. initially unclear if those workers that were seen gathered outside of the property they were taken to a different location where they were questioned. right now, it is an agonizing process of the family members and workers that were at these two different locations trying to look at their loved ones to make sure that they are okay. while the sheriff's contact next of kin for the people that perished in these shootings. but you can see, we have the video of the woman who was desperately trying to find information on their partner. the manager of

the mushroom farm there off of cabrillo highway. and there's no words that describe how hard that is. you say goodbye to your loved ones in the morning and you hear the news like this and you worry that you may never see them again. >> it is heart breaking. you can only imagine the pain of not knowing and the pain of wanting to know and the pain of hearing rumors and seeing what is on social media and what is being reported and not knowing the full extent of those details. as we mentioned, seven people have died. seven victims. a suspect was taken into custody. there is no threat taken to the public. the suspect likely taking himself and driving himself to the sheriff's substation. what we believe was that maroon lexus x cv. several deputies and investigators to come out of the vehicle and placed him on

the ground, put him in cuffs and walked inside the substation where he was later taken to the san mateo county jail. we've got the name of the suspect and in age. we have been told that person is 67-year-old jiao chun li. we've got a name and an age to put to the video of the suspect taken into custody. >> that was potentially being taken into custody at the half moon bay substation there. not too far away from these different shooting locations. these two mushroom farms there in half moon bay. you are seeing the challenges that some of these crews are going to be facing. the sun is set. it dark. they're looking into what we can see that may be difficult to see right now. crews may be looking at different spots on this mountain mushroom farm location. one of them being

close to what looks like a residential area. trailers and tents in some areas where it looks like that is where the workers stay. another location next to a maze of greenhouses. that is where they cultivate the mushrooms, presumably. and it's a large area. this particular form is quite large. unclear how big the second location is what we are talking about two big mushroom farms where these two different shootings occurred, where seven people were killed. three of them killed at the location off of cabrillo highway and presumably four were killed at the location over here where you just saw len ramirez off of san mateo boulevard in half moon bay. but a lot that we are still working on. still working on the circumstances, the motive. who this individual was. zhou chun li, 67 years

old. sheriff do not believe there is any kind of threat to the community. the individual is in custody but they are trying to figure out what happened since the shooting at 3:00 and what transpired there and right now, what's going to be next in this investigation. >> a lot has happened in the last three hours right now. at one point, this all started around 2:22. 3:00 was the time that we received. deputies dispatched to the mushroom farm where they found a four victims deceased and a fifth with life-threatening injuries. that person was rushed to stanford medical center. >> three victims were shot along the second site on highway 1, which we are hearing is also the location of a second mushroom farm there. >> the suspect has been identified as a 67-year-old zhou chun li. a half moon bay resident. located in his vehicle in the parking lot of the sheriff's substation at war: 40. >> investigators say he was arrested without incident and their weapon was found in his
