from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. >> right now on the afternoon edition, flags at monterey park are at half staff after the shooting that left 10 dead. good afternoon. i'm elizabeth cook. a memorial is also growing now at the dance hall where shots rang ou a group of mostly asian americans were celebrating the lunar new year when police say the suspect opened fire, killing 10 and hurting 10 more. michelle medina joins us live from monterey park with the very latest and michelle. >> reporter: the pain of the shooting is really impacting this tightknit community here in monterey park. many people gathered over the weekend to

celebrate the lunar new year. now they are struggling to understand why and how this happened. as investigators work to determine what motivated the command to open fire in a dance hall, residence in monterey park, california, struggled to cope with a mass shooting that left 10 people dead. >> i feel a sense of great loss about the home that i always had. it's gone. i will never feel safe here again. >> suddenly heard the boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: she was at the dance hall saturday night as shots rang out. >> we were seeing the bodies already. several lying there. >> the l.a. county sheriff said 20 to 30 minutes later, the same gunman entered another ballroom about two miles away. a man working there says he wrestled the gun away from the suspect, who fled in a white van. 72-year-old huu can tran was eventually tracked down in torrance, where police say he took his own life as a s.w.a.t. team moved in. about 60% of

the residents here in monterey park are asian americans. many have begun leaving candles and flowers at the dance hall. >> will need to talk about it. i think mental health stuff is so real and so difficult in the asian american community. the chinese community, in particular. >> reporter: police say the suspect used a semi automatic handgun, illegal to own in california. the shooting spree has renewed calls to reduce gun violence in america. >> why do we have so many guns in this country? and even more on the horizon? it's not right. other countries don't operate this way and we should not either. >> reporter: authorities said most of the victims were middle-aged or older members of the asian american community. >> the governor is in the area at the hour holding a news conference alongside the mayor of monterey park, updating the public about saturday's

tragedy. in the meantime, we can tell you the community will come together tonight for a candlelit vigil to remember the victims. elizabeth. >> it is such a tightknit community , michelle. i grew up near there. this type of thing does not happen in monterey park. i know that they are reeling from all of this. thank you so much. people marking the lunar new year in san francisco said they are troubled by the deadly violence in southern california. crowds took part in traditions to celebrate the year of the route, including a half-time performance at a warriors game featuring traditional financers. dancers. they received red envelopes at the door, but many also had heavy hearts. >> my mom is from vietnam. we celebrate it. it is really unfortunate to hear what happened in monterey. especially today, where, you know, you want to get together and celebrate as a community.

>> reporter: other fans at the arena said while they have a slight sense of fear after the weekend tragedy, they felt reassured by tight security measures, and we will continue to bring you updates on the shooting right here on cbs news bay area . on air as well as on the cbs news app and our website, kpix.com. switching gears, let's go to first alert meteorologist darren peck. nice day today. >> it is windy out there in places, still. especially in the mountains. our cameras are having a hard time staying still. the one on top of salesforce tower is just fine. but on mount diablo, it's going back and forth a little bit. the winds are gusting in the mountains right now. bubbly even feel this not as strong, but to some degree in the lower elevations where we all live and 40 on mount st. helena. we have been under a wind advisory until 7:00 this morning. that is going to expire and here is why. watch the wind diminishing over the next few hours.

>> let's take a quick look live at the big board right now. the dow up to one points. not a bad way to start the week. a former advocacy group is asking the federal trade commission to investigate the skyrocketing cost of eggs. they allege possible price gouging or coordination among major producers. the usda reported last week in california that the average price for a carton of eggs was $5.97. that is

actually down 11% from the week before. but look at the prices in other parts of the country. some families are taking matters into their own hands now. >> she is in charge. the red one is a stella. the black one is king nakamura. then we have john candy over here. the big guy. well, rle all hands. >> reporter: the family in walnut creek can now ignore the rising cost of eggs and stores. >> we're getting around for, six per day. very perfect. >> reporter: according to new data from the consumer price index, egg prices in december rose 60%. the usda reports the average price for a dozen eggs hit $7.37, up from the average of about $4.84 just in early december. then compare that to the average of $2.35 that we

saw in january 2022. it a mixed carton of inflation prices, plus an outbreak in avian flu hitting flocks across the u.s. the usda says nearly 58 million birds have been infected making of the deadliest outbreak in history. egg supply has weakened as birds who are infected are slaughtered. it takes time to replace the lost tens with an uninfected block that is ready to lay eggs. >> it's been very nice with the egg prices going up and people not even being able to find any eggs at the store. to have them as a luxury. >> reporter: it comes with other benefits to the environmental impact, as well. >> we crushed the egg shells and use them as fertilizer for our fruit trees. another great thing is that the evil of our scraps. i think we have a lot less waste. >> reporter: less in the trash. more protein on the table for her family. with minimal upkeep and it's a simple place price to pay. >> we worried it would be a lot

extra careful attention to your surroundings. it can come up's seemingly out of nowhere. that's why it's called that. the advisory expires 3:00 today. we hit high tide today at 12:01. we are there now. we are seeing the highest of this particular surge. the weather will be quiet for the next couple of days. if you look at the big picture here, the pacific wants to throw another system our way. it's going to turn into another one of these inside sliders. but we've got to go long-range. thursday, nothing happens. by saturday, right here, the next system tries to sneak down into northernmost california. you can watch it showing up right here and fizzling through. essentially, going into nevada. the reason why we were so windy yesterday and today is because we had that by the inside. we will probably see it happening again as we go through the weekend. that will mean more of the offshore winds. more

breaking news to report now. and 11th person has died from saturday's monterey park mass shooting. officials in l.a. county say one of the victims died today. nine others were hurt. it's been nearly two months and since her medics were called to a park in san francisco and saved a toddler who had accidentally overdosed on fentanyl. investigators still don't know how it actually happened. yesterday, the family met with those first responders who stepped in to save the child's life and devin fehely was there for this hold for a moment. >> by the time i arrived, all i saw was he was laying flat on his back. they had a breathing

apparatus on his face, assisting him with breathing. apparently, he was completely blue. >> reporter: he says he will never forget the nightmarish day he nearly lost his 10-month-old son to a fentanyl overdose and he will be eternally great for the quick thinking firefighters and aromatics who saved his sons life and >> they knew all the signs and decided to administer narcan. and just pop back almost instantly after that. >> reporter: his recovery was just as quick as the onset of his symptoms. a simple day at the park with his nanny and when brother that nearly went tragically astray after he stopped breathing anturned blue. the paramedics said they had to ignore his age and believe the evidence before their eyes. >> somebody who is not responsive and has stopped breathing is very characteristic of a possible opioid overdose. this is not my first video trick opioid overdose. >> reporter: the mystery then and now is exactly how he was

exposed. once paramedics administered narcan, his condition improved almost than a heart beat. >> started breathing, open his eyes, looked right at me, kind of scanned the room. the back of the ambulance. then started crying. >> reporter: the twins you just turned 1 never know how close they came to tragedy. but their pare that the little boy was pulled from the brink. and because of that, will live to celebrate many that moment. a parade of pups taking over a loretta town.
