dumped massive amounts of rain and snow, people in california can expect some drier weather in the days ahead. the white house says president biden will visit the state later on this week to see the damage first hand. the storms, which started late des dc december, have caused hundreds of rock slides like this one in california. a huge mudslide in berkeley damaged roads. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. president biden's trip is announced as the ninth atmospheric river was working its way through california. this one was relatively weak in comparison. the nearly month-long pounding has already taken its toll. the danger of flooding and mudslides in california continues even with dryer days

on tap this week. president biden is now set to tour the damage on the ground thursday after waves of storms have blanketed and battered the state for weeks. rescue workers pulled at least seven people from the swollen san diego river on monday, including arthur bowen who lives close to the water's edge. >> they did a great job, man. they did great. >> reporter: brad hendrickson, his wife, and two dogs were loaded onto a raft and carried partly to safety. from the floobled mobile home park under mandatory evacuation orders. >> a national guard truck took us through the water to a bus where they were able to pick us up. >> reporter: massive mudslides in this berkeley neighborhood affected at least 20 residences. and saturated hills in san mateo county caused rock slides to crash down onto the street, leaving little room for vehicles to navigate around the huge boulders. in all more than 500 landslides have happened statewide since the new year. trees in multiple regions were uprooted, falling onto homes. >> it shook the house.

it shook the foundation. it shook everything. >> reporter: meanwhile heavy snow was dumped further inland from the california mountains to nevada. >> personally i love the snow, but i hate driving in the snow. >> reporter: authorities have urged drivers to be cautious and patient as snow plows work to clear the streets. the president biden said he'll meet with first responders and state officials as they look at what other federal support might be needed. anne-marie, it's estimated the storms have cost a billion dollars in damage in a matter of weeks. so police in florida say eight people were shot during a martin luther king jr. day event. p it happened at a park at fort pierce near an mlk car show and family fun day. more than a thousand people were there. all were taken to the hospital. one is in critical condition. authorities say there was a disagreement between two parties

before the shooting. >> it's sad that during a celebration of someone who represented peace and equality that a disagreement results in a use of guns and violence to solve that disagreement. >> four others were injured when people began running after the shooting. and turning now to the investigation into president biden's handling of classified documents, after the discovery of more records at his delaware home last week, gop leaders want to know who visited the property. but the white house says there are no logs. skyler henry has the latest from washington. >> reporter: republicans in congress are demanding to know who may have had access to classified documents found at president biden's former capitol hill office and his wilmington, delaware, home. >> i think there's a lot of questions that we continue to raise, and we want to get all the information possible. >> reporter: house oversight chairman james comer sent a

letter to the white house requesting a visitor log of those who visited president biden's home since he was elected. >> the logs, i think, are very important. if they had classified information -- and this is apparently some of the most highly sensitive material we have in the united states government -- at a residence, we need to know who was exposed to it potentially. >> reporter: the white house tells cbs news that while they do keep records of who comes and goes from the white house, there are no records at the president's personal residence. they turned over more documents to doj officials, and they're fully cooperating with the special counsel's investigation. >> this administration is doing things by the book. there is a defined separation between the department of justice and the white house that certainly did not exist in the last administration. >> reporter: president biden didn't address the investigation during a martin luther king jr. day speech monday. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. authorities are searching for at least two suspects after six people were found shot to death at a home in central california.

deputies responded to reports of multiple shots fired yesterday at the home in ghosn. that's about 30 miles south of fresno. the victims are all related, and they include a 17-year-old mother and her 6-month-old child. investigators believe the shooting is gang-related. >> who goes into a house and massacres a bunch of people? who does that? >> we definitely have suspects who came in onto the property and made it very personal. >> the sheriff's office said it executed a drug-related search warrant at the home last week. and crew reese assume the search today for two people missing after a plane crash in nepal. a vigil was held yesterday at the airport in the capital of kathmandu. at least 70 of the 72 people onboard were killed. the yeti airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff.

the voice recorders and block box are being sent to france for analysis. cellphone video showed the plane suddenly veering to the left just moments before it crashed. and the death toll from a russian missile attack on an apartment building in the ukrainian city of dnipro has risen to 40. in his nightly address to the nation, president volodymyr zelenskyy said dozens have been rescued from the rubble. dozens are still missing. he said it underscores the need for ukraine's allies to speed up the decision on arms supplies. ukraine says it has started criminal proceedings against russian soldiers responsible for the missile strikes. russians deny intentionally targeting civil miamis. coming up, mobster arrest. how police in italy arrested a mobster after 30 years on the lam. the cowboys thrashed tom brady and the buccaneers in last

a public memorial service for lisa marie presley is scheduled for sunday at graceland. the only child of elvis presley suffered cardiac arrest on saturday at her california home. a family member says the funeral will be held on the front lawn of the memphis mansion. she'll be buried at graceland next to her son who died in 2020. elvis presley is also buried there. a losing streak is over for the cowboys, and a major mobster is in custody. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports a mafia boss was arrested in italy after eluding capture for 30 years. 60-year-old mateo da narr roe was arrested yesterday outside a medical clinic in sicily. italy's number one fugitive was sentenced to life in 2020.

he was convicted in absentia in dozens of murders including killing a mafia boss in 1992. prosecutors say he was also involved in a mafia turncoat's 12-year-old son. the "albuquerque journal" says a former new mexico republican legislative candidate was arrested in connection with sho shootings at politicians' homes. sources say solomon painy was angry about losing in november and made baseline claims that the election was rigged. shots were fired at homes in december. he allegedly shot at one home himself and hired others to pull the trigger on his behalf. >> this type of radicalism is a threat to our nation, and it has made its way to our doorstep right here in albuquerque, new mexico. >> no one was injured in the shootings. and "the dallas morning news" said the cowboys eliminated tom brady and the

for the first time in decades, china, the world's most populous country, has announced a decline in its population. the national bureau of statistics, counting 850,000 fewer people in china at the end of 2022 than the year before. experts say the aging population and lower birth rates have caused the decline. families have also cited the high cost of raising a child as a reason for not having as many children. on wall street now, the stockmarket reopens after observing martin luther king jr. day. some major banks are expected to roll out fourth quarter numbers today and tomorrow. shanelle kaul has the latest business headlines in your "moneywatch" report. >> reporter: elon musk claims he had the money to take tesla private. that deal never materialized and shareholders allege it caused wide swings in the market,

ultimately costing them billions of dollars. when the deal fell through, muffing was ousted as chairman of tesla and agreed to a $40 million settlement with the securities and exchange commission. jury selection begins today in california after the judge rejected musk's request to move the trial to texas. the cost of butter and margarine is skyrocketing. according to the consumer price index, margarine jumped a whopping 44% from a year ago and butter jumped 31%. producers blame the war in ukraine and the covid-19 pandemic for the reason. they say they need oil to bring the prices down. former british prime minister boris johnson has made a new book deal. a title and release date has not been announced. but the publisher claims this will be a, quote, prime steerial memoir like no other.
