reed was freed yesterday after being held in a russian jail for nearly three years. he was convicted of assaulting a police officer following a night of heavy drinking. the u.s. released a russian pilot serving a 20-year sentence on drug smuggling charges. bradley blackburn is in new york remarkable story.n this good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. this exchange would have been a big deal even during peace time. the fact that it happened during the war is a huge surprise, but the white house says it does not mean there has been a broader breakthrough with russia. the parents of marine veteran trevor reed were given a heads up earlier in week that their son may be released from a russian prison. >> we were on pins and needles -- >> reporter: on wednesday they got the news they had been hoping for. though frail and struggling to walk, trevor was on his way back to america. >> my son was probably never going to let up. he had made it his mission to, you know, try and not go along with anything they said. and he was paying the price for it.

and we feared that -- that his body would give out before his mind would. >> reporter: the 30-year-old was convicted in 2019 of assaulting an officer following a night of heavy drinking with his girlfriend. >> i told them i don't know. i was drunk. i don't remember anything after i was at this party with lena. >> reporter: in exchange for reed, the u.s. government freed a russian pilot convicted of drug smuggling charges. >> this individual had already served the majority of his prison sentence for nonviolent drug crime, and our overriding priority here was the safe return of trevor reed. >> reporter: reed's parents spent the past three years advocating for his release, traveling to moscow and washington meeting with president biden last month. >> president biden saved our son's life today. >> reporter: the white house vowed to continue fighting for other americans held in russia, including wnba star brittney griner and former marine paul whelan. and whelan's twin brother called it disappointing that he wasn't included in the exchange. he has been held in russia since 2018 on espionage charges. anne-marie?

>> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. >> reporter: thanks. president biden will deliver a speech today about ukraine. the white house says that he will offer remarks in support of ukrainians defending their country against the russian invasion. ukraine's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, says that he was invited to attend the g20 summit scheduled in november. he did not say whether he would go, but russian president vladimir putin could be there, as well. as russia faces accusations of war crimes that are being compared to the nazi genocide of world war ii, israel is marking its annual holocaust remembrance day. in a video released today, 100 holocaust survivors from around the world delivered a message about the dangers of unchecked hate amid rising global anti-semitism. it's being distributed by a new york-based group that provides for the welfare of holocaust survivors. six million jews were killed during holocst. a investigation launch

killing of george floyd found the minneapolis police department has engaged in a pattern of racial discrimination for at least a decade. the minnesota state investigation says police stop, search, arrest, use force, and cite people of color, particularly black people, at a higher rate than white people. it also says former and current city and police leaders have failed to act. >> i found the contents to be repugnant, at times horrific. they made me sick to my stomach and outraged, and i think that our community feels the same way. >> the state says that it will work with the city to address the long list of problems. a florida man who spent more than 30 years in prison on a wrongful conviction is now free. thomas james has been identified by -- had been identified by an eyewitness in the 1990 shooting, but prosecutors admit it was all a mistake. here's more from our cbs station in miami. >> reporter: exhausted and

elated, thomas james is a free man. >> the greatest feeling in the world. family, friends, freedom, i >> reporter: the 55-year-old is headed to a new life after a florida judge vacated the murder conviction that kept him behind bars for 32 years. >> it's been a long time coming, but i'm glad it's finally here. >> reporter: hours earlier, still in his prison uniform with his mother by his side, he heard the state attorney say her office would drop all charges. >> today we are undoing an injustice which was an unintentional wrong. we are going to ask the courts, our court of law, to give mr. james the freedom he deserves. >> reporter: he had been convicted in a death, but prosecutors believe police picked up the wrong thomas james, and the witness who identified him said she made a mistake. >> there was really no other evidence of his guilt.

in fact, there was no physical evidence that we could find tying anyone to the crime. >> reporter: while james releases a moment of joy for his family, his lawyer acknowledged the development leaves little peace for the victim's family. >> my deepest sympathy goes to the mckinnon family. i know how it is to believe in something and to have that taken away from you. >> reporter: james said he never gave up hope that he'd be released because the truth always comes out. ted scouten, cbs news, miami. former president trump is appealing a new york judge's decision to hold him in contempt of court and fine him $10,000 a day. the judge said that trump failed to comply with a subpoena to turn over records as part of the new york state attorney general's investigation into his business dealings. trump's attorney says a search found no documents to provide investigators except for some that were previously turned over. madeleine albright, the first woman to serve as secretary of state, was

find your relief in store or online. a spacex dragon capsule carrying a four-member crew docked at the international space station less than 16 hours after it launched from florida. they were welcomed on board by other astronauts on the orbiting lab. among the new astronauts is 33-year-old mission specialist jessica watkins. she's the first black woman to ever fly an extended mission on the space station. rapper travis scott is returning to music festivals, and there are new water restrictions in california. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports parts of southern california face a full outdoor watering ban by september if conditions don't improve. officials declared an unprecedented water shortage emergency in parts of three counties including los angeles. nearly six million people will have to reduce outdoor watering to one day a week starting june 1st or face stiff fines.

"variety" says travis scott announced his first music festival appearances since the astro world tragedy. the rapper said that he will perform at three installments. the festival this fall. ce t majmealin the u.s. he has kept a low profile since ten people died when the crowd surged forward during his performance at the astroworld festival in houston. and "forbes" says a rare 15-carat blue diamond sold for $57.5 million at a hong kong auction.

organization says that it is retiring the name from its list of atlantic storms because last year's hurricane ida was so severe. it killed 55 people and caused $75 billion in damage from louisiana to new england. this is the 12th hurricane name starting with the letter "i" that's been retired. the list of atlantic hurricane names repeats every six years. on the cbs "money watch," disney is fighting back plans to strip its self-government status in florida, and you can treat your mom to a special kfc flower arrangement for mother's day. naomi ruchim has those stories and more. good morning. >> reporter: we will get to that. i promise you. stock futures are pointing to a higher open this morning. investors continue to focus on first-quarter earnings results with amazon, apple, and twitter among the companies reporting today. shares of meta platforms jumpedn trading after reporting better-than-expected earnings

and a jump in the number of facebook daily users. yesterday the dow gained 61 points. the nasdaq fell a point, and the s&p 500 was up eight. walt disney world's self-governing district told the state of florida and governor ron desantis that if they want to get rid of its special status, it will cost them. the reedy creek improvement district said florida can't legally dissolve it without first paying off its $1 billion bond debt. in a statement to its bondholders, the district cited the 1967 law that created its special status. the law said there could be no paff expects to continusinesss usual. the pain at the pump just got a little less painful for walmart-plus customers. the retail giant announced it has increased its discount on gas prices from five to ten cents a gallon for members. the discount which was already
