the morning rush is about to start... with drivers hitting the roads heading to work.. we're monitoring what good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, novemberer 8th. i'm michelle griego. >> kenny is off this morning. and take a look at the sparkling bay bridge. there is that fog. it's amazing how the fog affects our temperatures. yes, it does. not too comfortable to spend too much time outdoors. you can see it hovering just over the very tops of the bay bridge. you can see the bridge itself,

so it's not too bad. yes, the morning fog is bag again. smoky across the bay area. going to be the smokeiest today. visibility down to 2 miles, not bad at sfo. in the north bay, that fog is definitely settling in. there is barely a breeze there. temperaturewise in santa rosa, cool. look at the wind speed, overall. worse wind direction, that's right going to protect some of the coastal communities from a lot of that smoke. because it's calmer, the smoke will settle in a little. >> you mentioned the fog. chp has issued an advisory for drivers headed over the bay

bridge and the golden gate bridge. you may see some flashing lights but nothing to talk about here. this is near sir francis drake boulevard, due to some downed power lines. crews expect to be out there until 6:00 a.m. that is the check of traffic. back over to you. long wait times at dmv offices will be the key focus today. jackie ward joins us live with the latest on all the finger point can. >> reporter: michele, the head of the dmv says that average time is only 23 myths but a lot of people are not buying that. they want the problem fixed

now. people across california wait six toseen at the dmv, partially because of the requirement to get the new ids. the head of the dmv made a bold request. we would ask to have additional budget authority up to 26 million to allow us to hire more staff which should help to further alleviate the wait time. that did not go well over with some lawmakers, including the bay area congressman. he says that he wants an audit to audit what he calls

mismanagement by the dmv. that's why lawmakers are hesitant to add more money. >> director wants to take 200 worker, state workers from other agencies and bring them into dmv offices. they want to add self-checking kiosk and maybe a text notification system so people don't have to hang around the parking lot or inside the building. back to you. >> we all know the pains of waiting in line at the dmv so hopefully something works. we'll see. >> that's right. the largest fire in castle history is still churning around it's putting our air quality at risk. >> some of the evacuations have been lifted. that happened yesterday which allows hundreds of people to return home. let's take a look at where that massive fire is burning right

like sacramento and san joaquin valley. what they have is smoke in their skies. here is a look at our air quality working its way down into the bay area. moderate to unhealthy east bay. santa clara noticing some of the forecast models they are showing north of golden gate bridge. here is a look at the speed this hour. worse wind sfo at 7 miles per hour. it's calmed down a little with it. east of livermore, you may notice a breeze and right around fair field between value yo and fair field. getting windy pretty much in the morning. right now, calm through the north bay. that's why the air quality will not be so good. we'll get a boost of the wind tomorrow. tomorrow will be a little bit stronger because the low will get closer and when that happen, the wind streamlines will get low as well. because it's very light today,

unfortunately, we'll all be dealing with smoky conditions. temperature wise will feel pretty comfortable. a little above average for concord. 93 for that afternoon high there. 85 in campbell. 80 in mallippatta. cooler than yesterday because that smoke will prevent the sun from heating up too much. still hot in lake county. upper 90s today. wind gusts 25 to 35 miles per hours, very low. this include lake county, of course, areas where the minute sino -- mendocino fires. thursday through saturday, you can see temperature l-on the rise through saturday before they drop again on monday, tuesday and wednesday. that's a look at the forecast.

that fire is 43% contained right now. the biggest wildfire in state history, that mendocino complex fire. >> it surpassed last year's thomas fire. let's take a look at the map where that fire is burning. you can take a grasp of the size there. two are merging, the river have scorched 255 square smiles. it's nearly the size of the city of los angeles. the fire is now 34% contained. firefighters as far away as australia have helped it. it has destroyed 75 homes so far but less disruptive to

property than other areas. officials say it still threatens more than 10,000 buildings and new evacuations have been ordered. >> a lot of what you can see is the helicopters. they are using a lot of helicopters and aircraft to go up there and put out the hot spots, the really hot areas and dropping down retardant lines to slow the fire down. >> clear lake being in the middle of the fires has been helpful. firefighters have been filling up their chores there as they try to hold the line. they expect this fire to burn will in the end of the month. the evacuations that were lifted yesterday, those west of state highway 29 south of highway 20, north of 175 and east of the lake mendocino county lane. again, those people have

preponderance out of their homes for more than a week and a half at this point. some of the smoke reached the bay area. the bay area air quality mapping. district issued that alert. and caltrans is hosting a virtual community meeting at 6:00, broadcasting that live. a lot of people will be tuning in. such disruption that school was supposed to start today but that's being held off for two weeks in lake county. >> really affecting so many people's lives. are we hearing anything from the federal government on those fires. >> president trump said a lot about what he is doing. he says that his administration is monitoring the fires, holding meetings in the future to try to mitigate the danger in california. and he had a lot of praise for the firefighters here.

until you get past 680, 280. back over to you. lake tahoe is being hit with a double whammy according to a u c davis report. the lake's clarity dropped to an average depth of 59 feet in 2017. that number normally ranges between 70 and 80 feet. the lake's crisp water reached a water temperature of more than 68 degrees. there are two reasons for the changes. the record high precipitation and the end of a five-year drought. aclu have filed a lawsuit challenging the decision to strip asylum seekers -- in june, attorney general jeff sessions says that victims of domestic and gang violence will no longer qualify.

the forecast. >> thank you, jacklyn. looking visibilities are not too bad in places like san francisco but south of the golden gate bridge, pretty low, coastal clouin and hazy skies over a lot of the sacramento valley. a look at the visibility right now. half moon bay, typical stuff. san jose, nine miles. livermore, six miles visibility and only one mile through the north bay. slow going towards petaluma and santa rosa. temperatures slightly cooler this morning than yesterday. 53 in san francisco. i know the sun is not quite out yet but now is the chance to go outside and do any kind of running you may want to do. later on this afternoon, going to be too smoky, not good for

has been found at a new mexico compound where 11 starving chin were rescued last week. all five adults on the compound are now facing charges of child abuse. the 11 dispute children found there are now in state custody. the sheriff of tyler county says there was no way for deputies to do a legal search of the compound until last week. authority are still waiting for the results of the autopsy. the adults arrested are accused of keeping the children in an underground trailer with virtually no food or water. lines at dmvs across the state are more horrible than usual but the state has given the department millions of dollars to fix that problem so what's happening? and the largest fire in atorco rn near lake county. coming up, the latest on the firefight from the front lines.
