good samaritan comes to the rescue. >> i'm kenny choi. >> kpix reporter jessica flores on what police are calling an heroic rescue. >> chp tells us the truckdriver lost control of the big rig. it rolled over. a good samaritan pulled the truckdriver out of the burning truck. >> a big rig hauling cans of pineapple crashed and went up in flames blocking all i-80 eastbound lanes just before the carquinez bridge. >> for whatever reason, it's under investigation that the driver lost control of the truck, hit the reverse score point,. >> a good samaritan driving behind the truck sprang into action to rescue the unconscious driver. >> the truck started to ignite becoming on fire very slowly, so he dragged him out of the actual cab because it pretty much separated from the truck itself, and then provided cpr

at that time. >> a helicopter flew the truckdriver to the hospital with minor injuries while the traffic backed up for miles. then, just before 4 a.m. another crash, according to chp, a 67-year-old man from fairfield smashed his toyota camry into a stopped big rig in the traffic. the driver of the camry was pronounced dead at the hospital. two crashes, one deadly leaving lanes closed until 10 a.m. chp says one of their main concerns during the cleanup diesel that leaked into the drainage system. >> so right now they're just figging out where it actually drains to so they can dam that and then flush the system out. >> in crockett, jessica flores kpix 5. >> what a mess. and right now pomona street, the offramp before the bridge is still closed. it is expected to open at 1: memorial day weekend may mark the unofficial start of summer, but check this out. this was the scene at sierra at tahoe a couple of hours ago.

snow flurries and thick fog, and if you're headed in that direction, get ready for some winter-like conditions. most of the bay area experiencing a late sprinkling today. >> right now it's hard to believe it's spring, but yes, this is a spring storm. look at this view of squaw valley. this would be the top of the mountains, and you can definitely see visibility is down. also, there's that hot temp that they have up there. hey, they're going to be open this weekend, although they shut down earlier because of poor visibility and lightning strikes. the sierra has gotten plenty of lightning strikes since early this morning. there's a winter weather advisory since 5:00 in the morning, campers, hikers beware. all of this will quickly probably melt by the time tomorrow rolls around and sunday. it's going to start to really warm up. there's a few areas with some scattered snow flurries around

south lake, right around highway 50. redding, eureka they've been getting dumped on. for us a few hundredths of an inch, through napa, barely through glen ellen, maybe a drizzle, a little shower activity left in the system. it's doing this counterclockwise motion and we are sitting right in the middle of it, which is why we've stayed dry but also cloudy and cool. a look this noon inside a part of sfo you only see when you arrive from another country. this morning the u.s. customs service gave journalists a behind the scenes tour of its operations at san francisco international airport. the tour is in response to claims made by filipino activist jerome abba who says he was mistreated by customs workers while being detained at the airport for 28 hours in april. immigration officials deny his claims but acknowledge being detained can be an emotional experience. >> we strive to do the right

thing in every case, first and foremost to protect the country, and we recognize that. >> jerome a bba was eventually refused entry to the united states. a $525 million project in antioch is completed to make life easier for people who live in the antioch area and rely on b.a.r.t. kpix reporter jackie ward takes us inside the new station. >> commuters in antioch have a reason to celebrate. the solar powered antioch b.a.r.t. extension station will open to the public tomorrow. >> it's an exciting day for the residents of eastern contra costa county. they've been rating far rail extension for a long time. many thinking it's long overdue, but it's finally here. >> this is part of the highway 4 widening project, which expanded highway 4 between pittsburgh and brentwood. b.a.r.t. is expecting as many as 2400 people to ride the 10-mile stretch in each direction per hour during rush hour. >> those two projects together are really going to help this area. everyone knows highway 4 is an absolute nightmare, and we're really hoping this alleviates

some of that pain. >> we got a sneak of the diesel multiple unit vehicles that will carry riders 11 minutes along highway 4 from antioch to pittsburgh bay point. they run on bio diesel. >> a lot of people are concerned when they hear diesel but it is renewable diesel, and it was half the price of big b.a.r.t., but when you experience it you're not going to miss anything about big b.a.r.t., this is a beautiful modern, clean high-tech system. >> this is the exact setup some people in livermore were hoping the b.a.r.t. board would approve for their community to help ease traffic along interstate 580. in a 5 to 4 vote, board members decided to remain focused on existing projects and not build an extension there. approving the extension is easier because of what was already in place. >> in this specific border, these tracks are plum to go further east to brentwood. in antioch, jackie ward kpix 5.

>> if you want to check out the new antioch extension yourself b.a.r.t. is offering free rides today from 1 until 8:00 tonight. new details this noon in yet another school shooting. this one in indiana. police say three people were injured this morning when a male student opened fire at a middle school in noblesville, indiana. the suspect is now in custody. investigatorlievs e abouted alone. there have been 23 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed so far this year. in oklahoma an armed bystander is being called a hero for stopping a gunman at a popular oklahoma city restaurant. according to police a gunman opened fire at a restaurant and struck two people including a 12-year-old girl. two others were hurt as the suspect fled the scene, and then moments later the gunman was confronted by a bystander armed with a pistol. police credit that person for saving lives. >> when the suspect leaves a restaurant, he is confronted by a civilian. the civilian did have a

handgun, and the civilian pulled out his handgun and shot the suspect and he killed the suspect. >> and police are looking into whether that bystander had a license to carry a weapon. as for that 12-year-old victims, she is expected to make a full recovery. disgraced hollywood mogul harvey weinstein was arrested this morning in new york city. he's charged with rape and a criminal sex act. this is the first criminal case stemming from scores of allegations against weinstein. >> fallen media mogul harvey weinstein carried books as he walked into a new york city police precinct to turn himself in this morning after being arrested, fingerprinted and photographed, weinstein walked out a short time later wearing handcuffs. he was whisked to the courthouse where he was charged with first and third degree rape and two counts of forcible sex acts involving two separate women in 2013 and 2004. >> this is kind of the first time he's facing the same

justice system as the rest of us. >> more than 80 women have accused weinstein of sexual harassment, misconduct, and even rape. most cases remained out of the public eye after he quietly made financial arrangements with the victims. >> this defendant used his position, money, and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually. >> weinstein's arrest follows months of investigation by the district attorney's office and a grand jury that interviewed hundreds of witnesses. >> they were not going to go forward with any of these cases no matter how the rest of us may have felt until they felt they were ready and they're ready now. >> weinstein has repeatedly denied any allegations of non- consensual sex. his attorney says he will enter a not guilty plea. >> bad behavior is not on trial in this case. it's only if you intentionally committed a criminal act, and mr. weinstein vigorously denies that. >> weinstein was released on $1

million bail. the court ordered him to wear a gps monitoring device. he surrendered his passport and is not allowed to go beyond the states of new york and connecticut. john schiumo, cbs news, new york. >> looks like there's an effort underway to save the summit with north korea. yesterday president trump was blaming critical comments from north korea. as cbs news' correspondent mola lenghi reports that decision isn't exactly set in stone. >> president trump says a possible summit with north korean leader kim jong-un could still happen. >> we're going to see what happens. we're talking to them now. >> it's almost a complete 180 from thursday when the president announced he was withdrawing from the june 12th talks after critical comments from pyongyang. >> i believe that this is a tremendous setback for north korea and indeed a setback for the world. >> north korea responded saying it was willing to sit down with the u.s. at any time. this morning the president called that a very nice

pompeo who has led the negotiations with north korea is scheduled to meet with president trump this afternoon. north korea has destroyed its nuclear test site and wants to make sure the world knows. >> the north koreans invited international journalists to witness the destruction of a site it's been using to test nuclear weapons since 2006 but just how significant the display is remains in question. outside scientists have claimed the site was already so badly damaged by previous tests it wasn't usable, and some north korea experts say there's no way of knowing if the country still has some nuclear testing infrastructure in place. >> coming up, lava is still spewing from the kilauea volcano, how some marines are getting ready to help evacuate some residents in danger. >> and one of the bay area's biggest music festivals is getting underway, how you can still score tickets to the

kilauea ..are now flowing into the ocean. you're takng a live look now.. lava is spewing from a fissure in a rural community now to the latest in hawaii where three lava flays in mount kilauea are flowing into the ocean. taking a live look at lava spewing from a fissure in feedi two other flows that are reaching the waves. scientists say the kilauea volcano is not letting up. more homes are getting destroyed by volcano-related issues. for now kilauea seems to have spared a threatened geothermal power plant, but there are also some spots where officials are worrying about widening cracks. >> the first thing that came to my mind was are we ever going

to be able to go home? >> u.s. marine corps helicopters are standing by in case they need to evacuate a big island community, that's if molten rock or huge cracks block its final escape route. each chopper can carry up to 50 people. right now wine country is getting ready to rock to the beat this memorial day weekend. the bottle rock music festival just started a few minutes ago at the napa expo. it runs through sunday. the festival is sold out already, but tickets are available at a ticket exchange on the bottle rock website. tonight's big headliner is muse. tomorrow the killers take the stage and then sunday bruno mars from hawaii will bring his finesse to the fest, he's got the moves. >> that's going to be a great time, and the weather's going to be just right. it's going to be warm and sunny so hydration is key. water for you guys at bottle rock. of course wi be hot, i'm sure. here's a look at what's going on right now. we definitely have cool, cloudy

conditions out there. i want to take you on a few of our camera views. you can see the sutro tower in the distance. this one facing the east bay, and yes, it looks like rain clouds hovering right over oakland, the bay bridge, of course you oud cover around 2,000 feet in elevation, so just above sails force tower. 60 degrees in san francisco right now, livermore at 61. concord 64. it's coolest still in santa rosa at 58, and the high-def doppler showing there are some areas still of spotty showers. early this morning, a lot of these areas through sacramento, the foothills, the tahoe area, lots and lots of lightning strikes. that's what they woke up to. we right now are seeing some rain coming through glen ellen and sonoma. a few hundredths of an inches of rain will come down in all of this. for the tahoe region definitely slick roads out there, there's some snowflakes coming down: look at these dark clouds, they're going to continue to see some snow coming down

across the ridge tops. you can see where those clouds are hovering right over the mountains there right around lake tahoe. that's where people may run into some snow flurries, 1 to 3 inches possible, winter weather advisory in effect there. this is the counterclockwise motion. we are right in the middle of this low, and that's why we're not necessarily getting much rainfall, but the clouds are there. the cooler air is there as well. this low is going to move on east pretty quickly. when it does, we're going to see this. that ridge of high pressure means sunshine. it's going to feel pretty good by tomorrow. you'll forget about this storminess here pretty soon. we're going to continue to see that chance for light showers throughout the day, possibly a pop-up thunderstorm here and there because of course that's what they've been seeing through east and north of us, and there's a chance it could happen for us, but likely it will just be minimal rainfall. here's that seven-day forecast now. after this is done, look what happens to our temperatures. the average of high pressure is really going to be impactful raising our temperatures about 20 degrees by the time monday and tuesday roll around a lot of people will be going to the

reporter chris martinez have some tips. >> los angeles drivers are dealing with some of the highest gas prices in the nation, so before kari fills up her pickup she uses an app called gas buddy. >> i'll look at the app and see what the prices are around the area. >> there's an $0.84 spread in prices near kari and the app shows her the station offering the best deal. other apps like gas guru, google maps, and waze can help drivers find cheaper gas. >> if i can save $20 every week, think about how much i save for the year. >> another way to save money on gas is to use less of it. >> the faster you go, the more gas you burn. >> mike quincey from consumer reports says slowing down 10 miles per hour can buy about 6 more miles per gallon. >> also, if you can go to a gas station that isn't right off the highway, but if you can go a little bit farther and get away from the gas stations that are right off the interstate, that also might save you a couple of bucks. >> using the air-conditioning less and making sure your tires are fully inflated can allow your vehicle to run more efficiently. >> one easy way to save money

of. today's tip of the day, chinese long beans. the texture is so great. they hold up so well, and if you cook them, you saute them, what i like to do is par boil them, cool them down, and then saute them with a little extra virgin olive oil, fresh tomatoes, salt and pepper, and that's it. they are fabulous. selection and storage is very important. they're a super food, loaded with nutritional value. make sure they're green from top to bottom. they have to feel nice and fresh. when you bring them home, store them in the refrigerator right away. now, remember one time there's a few markets who carry chinese long beans, now they're available about anywhere you buy produce because they're flavorable and so versatile. always remember to eat fresh and stay healthy. it is official, chipotle is adding drive through lanes sort
