face-to-face now at 11:00 the stage is set tonight for an unprecedented face to face encounter. president trump and north korean leader kim jong un. good evening. i'm veronica de la cruz in tonight for ken bastida. >> i'm elizabeth cook. let's get right to kpix5's joe vazquez in the newsroom tonight. >> a surprise announcement and it came late today, that after a year of missile tests, threats and insults. now the ruler of north korea has invited president trump to meet face to face. >> kim pledged that north korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. >> south korea's national security advisor delivered the news at the white house. >> he expressed his eagerness to meet president trump as soon as possible. president trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet

kim jong un by may to achieve permanent denuclearization. >> reporter: tensions have been high over the past year as north cover conducted a series of missile tests claiming it could deliver nuclear warheads all the way to the u.s. mainland. president trump responded with threats even calling the north korean leader rocket man. many worried it could escalate into nuclear war. last month's olympics in south korea provided a break in the ice, but nobody quite saw today's announcement coming. >> it's historical. a u.s. president has never met with the leader of north korea. that at a minimum is astonishing. >> reporter: gloria duffy is former assistant secretary of defense of the clinton administration. she says kim jong un has already won a small victory given that north korean leaders have tried for decades to get u.s. presidents to agree to a face to face meeting, but usually the u.s. puts conditions on such a meeting, mainly north korea would have to take steps to get rid of its nuclear weapons program, something they've never been willing to do.

will they actually do it this time? >> i'm skeptical. i cannot imagine that they're going to actually give up their nuclear weapons capability having spent all of their effort over the last 20 years building it. being >> reporter: tonight president trump tweeted kim jong un talked about denuclearization, not just a freeze. great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. so far the only time constraints is they said they would do it by may, but no other time or place have been established. joe vazquez, kpix5. tonight we learned a national guard helicopter based out of moffitt field made a hard landing in idaho. the helicopter landed on a highway around 2:30 this afternoon south of mountain home. all six crew members are okay. they were on board a pave hawk helicopter similar to this one here used mostly for recovery missions. the incident is still under investigation. sophisticated crime ring.. responsible for ripping people tonight police in fremont say they've dismantled part of a sophisticated crime ring

responsible for ripping people off all over the bay area. kpix5's betty yu on the arrests and warning tonight for local gas stations. betty? >> liz, fremont police believe the suspects could be tied to a transnational criminal organization with roots in the greater los angeles area. they say the men traveled from southern california to the bay area to use cloned debit cards in areas where they were first skimmed. fremont police arrested these four men from l.a. county who they say used gas pump skimmers to steal credit card information across five bay area counties including alameda, santa clara, san mateo, contra costa and san francisco. it was a fremont patrol officer who first noticed yurio sedski making multiple transactions at a wells fargo atm in january. he ultimately found him with more than $3,800 and 25 gift

cards but no atm card. i had brother dennis was arrested the next day -- his brother dennis was arrested the next day after officers found cards, cash and electronics in i had hotel room. last week investigators -- in his hotel room. last week investigators recovered nine bluetooth gas pump skimming devices seen here, cloned devices to make more skimmers. this driver is a relative of the driver pulled over in fremont. police are now asking bay area gas station managers and workers to check their pumps for skimmers. >> i think people will have to start going into the store to pay for their gas rather than having the convenience to pay it at the pump. so it's very disappointing and inconvenient. >> scary these days and they got to get a better grip on it. >> reporter: fremont police uncovered evidence that helped them identify three other outstanding suspects tied to this skimming ring. betty yu, kpix5. tonight police identified a

person of interest in a deadly hit and run in vallejo. detectives hope to speak with this man, vincent fitzer. police say a gmc suburban struck and killed the 18-year- old pedestrian near fleming avenue east yesterday afternoon. police say fitzer may have been the driver. they believe he has much shorter hair than seen in this picture. new video of an armed bank robbery in the south bay. you can see the robber dressed in a hoodie and mask over his face. he robbed the wells fargo branch on first avenue back in december. he flashed a gun and demanded money no, word how much he got away with -- money, no word how much he got away with. san jose police is offering a cash award for information leading to an arrest. tonight an arrest in an armed gas station robbery in santa rosa, police say this man pointed a gun at the clerks at the 76 gas station at pioneer road and coffey lane this morning. he stole cash and got away. detectives tracked down the suspect at the extended stay inn hotel on fountaingrove

new hope tonight for some artists in west oakland fighting eviction. >> kpix5's christin ayers shows us they say they are being pushed out by pot. >> reporter: a vote today to protect a warehouse that oakland artists have called home for decades. >> we feel that we're being heard and not forgotten. >> artists need to be recognized and they need to be supported by none other than the politicians that run the city. i think that's victorious. >> reporter: painter arthur monroe moved into the cannery in the '70s and transformed it into what is believed to be oakland's first city sanctioned artists live/workspace, but last year a denver cannabis company called green sage bought the place and tenants say the owners were blunt about their plan to evict everyone. >> i said will the residents be allowed to stay and he said no. >> reporter: but today the

artists came to city hall to urge the council to adopt a resolution that would deny cannabis companies permits if they plan to evict residents from live/workspaces. >> i don't want my home to be in jeopardy. >> help us to stay in our homes. thank you. dispatchers about an emergency in a specific classroom. >> shows the room number, the ground floor, the site. >> reporter: teachers can give a status of their class, stable, unstable, assistance needed and medical emergency through their phone or even smart watch. once the alert is sent dispatchers can then chat with a teacher through the app. >> what this does is it gives specific locations and conditions for those that are in communication with law enforcement. >> anything that can help keep our kids safe. >> reporter: just like this woman, mike says school districts and law enforcement are in full support. miked he needed to take action after feel -- mike said he needed to take action after feeling so helpless the day after the sandy hook shooting. >> the only thing i could do was go to my son's school and make sure he and his friends were okay. >> reporter: universities and business owners have also reached out to mike about using safeguard. again, the app launches on

monday. maria medina, kpix5. >> the school districts that plan to use the app don't want to be named due to safety reasons, but mike says districts in the bay area, southern california and as far away as seattle are all interested in this service. twice in the last two days an aggressive mountain lion warning tonight in san mateo county, the big cat has been spotted twice in the last two days in the town of portola valley. sunrise trail in the blue oaks area is close until further notice. officials say the mountain lion may be protecting her young cub. tonight an injured bald eagle is on the mend. the spca from monterey county is taking care of this injured eagle. a car struck the bird monday. it suffered a wing injury and possible head trauma, but the bird is very fiesty, which is a good sign. they say he or she doesn't want to fly just yet. so right now it is pain medicine and cage rest. a blast from the past just sailed into san francisco. a three masted clipper ship cruising under the dutch flag.

our wilson walker stepped aboard and discovered it's a place where the old world meets the new. >> reporter: permission to come aboard? >> permission permitted. >> reporter: walk along the embarcadero and it's hard to miss the city of amsterdam three masted clipper built in 2000 that would have fit quite nicely here in the 19th century gold rush. >> it looks like the old clipper ships that sailed around here to the coast of california for digging gold. >> reporter: looks like an old clipper yet not a replica. the hull is made of steel and the bridge is packed with modern navigation equipment, but if you want to up the rigging, take in sail? >> the rigging is like it was 170 years ago only the material is much more modern. the masts is not wood anymore. it is steel and if you go farther up, the top masts are from aluminum. >> a lot of people look at them and any does that still work?

futurecast tomorrow morning, you'll wake up to mostly cloudy. you'll finish your friday, begin your weekend with some clearing, should be a pleasant day running 3 to 5 degrees warmer than average. saturday will look like rain in the morning. these are clouds, not rain. the rain comes in saturday afternoon and saturday evening and more rain the farther south you go, opposite of what we typically see. this is coming up from the south. sunday morning showers continue, maybe leaking into sunday afternoon. after that next week looks to be a rather wet pattern. we don't know the details yet, but showers and rain at times every day next week. so the unsettled pattern begins saturday evening. enjoy the weather between now and then, which will be good to get outside. concord tomorrow 2 degrees above average, 68 santa clara, 69 morgan hills, 66 san mateo, mid-60s for danville, antioch 69 degrees, low 60s daly city, mid-60s richmond and napa and also for santa rosa, 64 tomorrow for lake port.
