the mistakes tourists are making that are paying off for car burglars in san francisco. i am allen martin. >> i am juliette goodrich. joe vazquez is live in north beach tonight. joe? >> reporter: this boom in break ins happens to coids with a surge -- coincides with a surge in summer sightseeing. >> reporter: 4th of july weekend and mobs of tourists are swarming lumbard street. in their rush to take a selfie they leave valuables inside their parked cars and here is what happens next. this surveillance video from yesterday shows a tourist family from utah leaving their car. along comes a burglar, one by one, breaks the glass and runs away with a purse that had jewelry inside. >> how long were they gone? >> 15 minutes. >> reporter: his swack caught yesterday's burglary and another one a year ago. >> got worse in the last couple

years. that is why i put the cameras up a year ago. >> folks come in, park the car, ladened with their travel wears and grab and go. >> reporter: he has seen the criminals in action. yesterday a car hit a lady. >> in front of my house. hopped out of the car and grabbed her purse. >> we have plain clothed teams and they make a lot of arrests. in the last few months i can say there has been over 80 arrests in the central district. >> reporter: last night he says his undercover team busted a car burglar. still he says there were 66 car burglaries last week. the numbers are spiking and they will take anything left in the car. >> lot of the items are suit cases.
