the mistakes tourists are making that are paying off for car burglars in san francisco. i am allen martin. >> i am juliette goodrich. joe vazquez is live in north beach tonight. joe? >> reporter: this boom in break ins happens to coids with a surge -- coincides with a surge in summer sightseeing. >> reporter: 4th of july weekend and mobs of tourists are swarming lumbard street. in their rush to take a selfie they leave valuables inside their parked cars and here is what happens next. this surveillance video from yesterday shows a tourist family from utah leaving their car. along comes a burglar, one by one, breaks the glass and runs away with a purse that had jewelry inside. >> how long were they gone? >> 15 minutes. >> reporter: his swack caught yesterday's burglary and another one a year ago. >> got worse in the last couple

years. that is why i put the cameras up a year ago. >> folks come in, park the car, ladened with their travel wears and grab and go. >> reporter: he has seen the criminals in action. yesterday a car hit a lady. >> in front of my house. hopped out of the car and grabbed her purse. >> we have plain clothed teams and they make a lot of arrests. in the last few months i can say there has been over 80 arrests in the central district. >> reporter: last night he says his undercover team busted a car burglar. still he says there were 66 car burglaries last week. the numbers are spiking and they will take anything left in the car. >> lot of the items are suit cases.

purses. electronics. a suit case is often stolen. >> reporter: by now locals know the drill. don't leave anything valuable in your car. with so money tourists there is concern. there is talk about signs, warning signs. they tried this where the painted ladies live, warning tourists not to leave anything in the car and that reduced burglaries to some degree. joe vazquez, night beat. tonight police want to know who is responsible for this vandalism in berkeley. someone slashed tired. spray painted on gates and cars. happened last tuesday and wednesday. the area just south of memorial stadium on the cal campus. detectives believe the incidents may be connected because they happened near each other and about the same time. step outside in oakland tonight, the sounds of fireworks are everywhere.

and christin ayers tells us police are listening. >> reporter: it is a problem every 4th of july. illegal fireworks shows lighting up the sky line while authorities play cat-and-mouse. >> reporter: light visible from the oakland hills tonight. these are the unsanctioned fireworks shows police are trying to stop. on this block in east oakland it was day light and boys were setting off fireworks in the streets. but neighbors say this is child's play. >> this is light weight. feels like a war zone. >> she lived here for 50 years and is so worried about illegal fireworks sparking a fire that she took out her lawn. >> every once in a while you hear a big boom and sometimes it goes -- >> reporter: there they go. >> yeah. >> reporter: police tell us they are ready with increased patrols in areas that technology mapped as

president. >> reporter: he defended the president. >> i am proud of the president for developing a social media platform where we could talk to the american people. >> reporter: last week white house spokeswoman was asked if the tweets and comments create an atmosphere of violence. >> the president in no way form or fashion has ever promoted or encouraged violence. >> like to punch him in the face. >> reporter: on the campaign trail he founded like he was encouraging violence against protesters. >> if you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato knock the crap out of him. just knock -- i promise you i will pay for the legal fees. i promise. >> reporter: in one of his tweets this weekend the president told his critics my use of social media is not presidential it is modern day presidential.

so welcome to the modern age. cbs news, the white house. >> president trump was back on twitter tonight criticizing kim jong un after word of the latest missile launch. he tweeted does this guy have anything better to do with his life? he encouraged south korea, japan to step up pressure on the north to end this non-sense once and for all. after the test the u.s. military says a ballistic missile was launched near north korea. if flew for 37 minutes before landing in the sea of japan. new jersey governor chris christie will have company on the beach this 4th of july. late tonight lawmakers announced they have a budget deal to send the three day government shut down and the governor said he will sign it right away. he has been taking heat over photos showing him enjoying time at island beach state park. the state beach has been closed to the public all weekend.
