bonus. >> it's always scary. always the possibility of fire. >> from across the bay to around the world. the stories that matter on kpix 5 news this morning. >> good morning, everyone. it's tuesday august 20th. >> it is 5:00. here's something you don't see very often. lightning and a lot of it. thousands of lightning strikes lit up the sky. this video is from a viewer in san bruno showing some of the display overnight. sounds like we will have more today. >> there's certainly that possibility. the area of low pressure remains off the coastline. looks like things are stabilizing. you can see numerous lightning strikes. can you believe that measured in the bay area and off the coastline? that is rotating off the coast

right now. we have fog moving off shore. even drizzle there. 50s and 60s at this hour. the core of the low remains off the coast. fire danger running high. red flag warnings are up. temperature wise 80s and low 90s. 70s and 80s around the bay and 60s out toward the coast. let's check out the roadways. >> major injury crash. we have confirmed that with chp. roads closed and traffic alert this morning. a heads up if your commute takes you through san jose. northbound 880 is shut down right now. car overturned and a person was reportedly trapped inside. the latest word is that 5:30 this morning, hope to get the street sweepers out there. in the meantime, traffic is squeezing by in the right hand shoulder. you can continue using 280. in the meantime, the

drive time continues to slow about 15 minutes or so on northbound 880 between 280 and highway 237. let's go outside. the rest of the bay area is quiet towards the oakland coliseum. back to you. >> thanks. right now the lightning has let up in the bay area. but plenty of it last night. viewers sent us pictures of lightning bolts from a number of locations. sue kwon is in the berkeley hills where firefighters are on alert. >> reporter: good morning. i'm standing where we had our 1991 oakland berkeley hills fire. there is a sign that says high fire danger to warn the residents. right now it's quite foggy. cool conditions. there is a red flag warning in affect. there were lightning strike s and viewers did send in images of that lightning.

16,000 strikes in all measured from 5:00 in the evening to 3:00 in the morning. it was measuring at one bolt every second. an electrical fire set a homeowner's deck on fire. you know what, speed is their best defense. >> first and foremost, we're in drought conditions. all the annual grasses have died and low fuel moisture. and today we have the extra element of potential for electricity in the atmosphere. >> reporter: the red flag warning in affect for east and south bay areas. north bay through tomorrow. extra personnel is on hand for many of the bay area fire stations and homeowners who are used to this have their hoses out and ready. this red flag warning in affect

through tomorrow. reporting live in the berkeley hills sue kwon, kpix 5. >> some of the fires burning in california were caused by lightning. the rim fire closed highway 120 headed toward yosemite. there are also three fires burning in northern california. the american fire is one of the biggest right now. it scorched 15,000 acres in steep terrain. 2,000 firefighters are on the front lines. it is 53% contained. some of the area being burned has not had a fire in more than a century. >> people are allowed to return to their homes that was threatened by the swedes fire. more than 300 buildings are still threatened this morning. the evacuees are worried about what they'll find when they go home. >> pretty anxious. some of them

didn't get their horses out in time. >> this morning, the swedes fire is two thirds contained. expect to have a line around it by thursday. burned 2100 acres. >> developing overnight, one man has died after a shooting at an east san jose restaurant. one of them died at the hospital about four hours later. neighbors were surprised by the violence. >> families and children. and older folks. it's a good neighborhood. it's sad this has to happen. but it can happen anywhere. >> the shooting happened inside the restaurant. at this time no suspect information. a father killed in oakland will be buried today. 20-year-old andrew thomas was shot to death when someone fired into the bedroom of a home earlier this month. his one

year old son also died. >> happening today, we will learn more about the up coming closure and reopening of the bay bridge. cate caugurian explains this comes amid a big debate over a bonus a contractor may receive. >> reporter: and everything appears on track for a labor day opening. you can see we have that count down running on your screen right now. but state leaders are taking a look at the bonus the contractor is supposed to get. they are saying the numbers don't add up. state senator anthony canella is asking for an investigation. the contractor installing the shims to reinforce those bad bolts clearing the way for on-time opening. but american bridge floor was partly to blame for those busted bolts. >> to give out a $20 million bonus on a project that $5 billion and ten years over

budget is outrageous. >> reporter: now, as you heard the cost to fix the cracked bolts about $20 million and that's the same amount for the bhoen us for finishing -- bonus for finishing the bridge. cal trans will make the final decision, not sure when. but state leaders have a lot of unanswered questions. cate caugurian, kpix 5. >> and kpix 5 did try to contact cal trans about this but have not received a response. specifically 8:00 p.m. a week from tomorrow. the bridge is scheduled to be closed for five days before reopening to traffic. >> the deadly limo fire has been ruled an accident. a mechanical issue sparked the may 4th fire. trapped 9 friends on their way to celebrate a wedding. no one will face any criminal charges. investigators

battling massive wildfire in idaho. more than 2,000 homes are under mandatory evacuation owners. the beaver creek fire is threatening a resort area where actor's tom hanks and bruce willis have private get aways. it's only 9% contained. caught on video, a man battling the flames get doused with fire retardant. captured that moment when a helicopter approached and dropped the retardant. as far as we know he is okay. >> let's check in on that traffic accident slowing things up in san jose. >> it's really causing a mess early in the morning. because all lanes are blocked on northbound 880. also major injuries were involved. you can see the tow crews arrived on scene ten minutes ago. the flairs are up -- flares are up.

basically, avoid this area. traffic alert was issued at 4:08. northbound 880 by the 280 inter change. they hoped by 5:30 to get street sweepers on scene and clean up the debris on the roadway. 5:30 this morning we're hoping to see more lanes unblocked. 280 inter change, some cars are being detoured and back on to 880 later on and get past the accident scene. the drive time is about 22 minutes right now on the northbound lanes between 280 and highway 237. the rest of the south bay through downtown san jose, 11 minutes on the northbound lanes. and looking pretty clear up and down the guadalupe parkway. live towards the bay bridge. there we go. one quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza. coming into san francisco,

here. it's going to spin here for another couple days before making its way on shore. going to keep things unsettled. the possibility of thunderstorms through tomorrow and red flag warnings are up in the mountains and that is due to the dry lightning strike and possibility of causing fires. around the state, possibility of fires around the state. high country a better chance. thunderstorms expected in yosemite. a chance of thunderstorms and 100 in redding. around the bay 83 in san jose. 81 in milpitas. 80s and low 90 s inland and a chance of thunderstorms. inside the bay, 72 in oakland. 67 in san francisco and 63 in daly city. next couple days, keep things unsettled. then on thursday or friday the low kicks east. and the weather settling down. cooler temperatures, the first part of the weekend. one bolt

skies overnight. viewers sent us pictures of this unusual weather. there were tens of thousands of lightning bolts last night and early this morning. sue kwon is in the berkeley hills where firefighters are on alert for more lightning strikes this morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, there is a red flag warning in affect. you can see the sign right there. fire danger is high. and extremely relevant to those who live here in the berkeley hills. the sight of the fire storm of 1991. this is one of the reasons why people are so concerned. this is images and video captured from viewers of lightning all over the bay area. 16,000 strikes from 5:00 to 3:00 a.m. that's the estimate that hit. and at least one bolt every second. that's why fire stations are on high alert around the bay area. an electrical fire set a homeowner's deck on fire. firefighters were able to squash

and possible thunderstorms, red flag warnings remain in affect. so here we go, this low off the coastline spinning around. and that's what's bringing the activity into the bay area. it's going to take another couple days to move out. we're going to see a possibility of thunderstorms through tomorrow and the whole system begins to shift eastward and weather begins to calm down. temperature wise 89. 82 in sunnyvale. and 78 in hayward. east bay temperatures in the 80s and low 90s this afternoon. cooler there. inside the bay, 60s into san francisco. 72 in oakland and 82 in santa rosa. next couple days keeping things unsettled. then on thursday and friday the low moves on. start to clear out your skies with the exception of patchy fog. but last night, that was something else. watching that very
