pic said they would let his son and encourage him to play football if that's what he wanted. >> dennis, it must be super bowl week when you hear an nfl player refer to the president and say, sorry, dude. >> reporter: exactly. i don't know if it was a lack of respect but alex boone, that's alex for you. >> yeah. it's going to be a good game. thank you, dennis. most of us will have to wait until the weekend to start our super bowl partying but in new orleans, the party never stops. cbs 5's michelle griego is spending the week there learning all about the big easy and she found out the bars never close unless they want to. >> it never closes. >> it never closes. we never close. we shut down the bar to the public for three hours for the christmas party and because that's by invitation, otherwise we're opening 24/7, 365. >> reporter: new orleans is also one of the only u.s. cities where it's legal to drink on the street.

the bars even give out plastic to go cups so you can sip and stroll. a 9ers super bowl win could make the bay area the center of the sports universe and san francisco city leaders are looking at taking full advantage of that. cbs 5 political insider phil angelides at insider phil matier reports. >> reporter: first we had to get the bet out of the way. here's the mayor and we'll take it from there. >> we haven't gotten all the details. but mayor of baltimore is a real bright lady. i really like her. stephanie rawlings blake. and we know we both have crab. she has the blue crab and i have the dungeness crab here so we already have part of the bet. the loser has to fly to the winning city put on the bib and go down to their favorite place and crack the crab in front of all the cameras. >> reporter: while the super bowl is getting all the attention, for mayor lee it's just the start. >> it is i think going to be a great kickoff but i still think there's more to come.

>> reporter: it could be one of the biggest sport years in the city's history leading off with the baseball world classic at at&t park. >> that's just right on the heels of winning the world series. and then before your head can turn around we have 55 days of sailing on our bay with the louie vuitton cup happening the 4th of july. after that's done before you can take a breath in you have the charles schwab end of the finals for all the pga players at over 50. >> reporter: then next month you're going to have the term sheet for the warriors to read in front of the board of supervisors for approval. that's a megadeal. >> it sure is. it's one of the biggest deals that i think the city will ever make. we are so lucky, phil, to have a team that is willing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars, their own money. this is a big, big game changer. >> reporter: these events cost money, especially something like the super bowl. what's the payback on all this?

>> it will cost money, and i'm not going to have a general fund be the primary pay for that. we will do something on behalf of the city that will help but most of the money will be raised in the private sector. >> reporter: as you can see, mayor lee is already looking beyond the super bowl and i already say one game at a time. this guy's definitely got a game plan that may include a bid for the olympics, as well. at city hall san francisco, phil matier cbs 5. we have you covered on everything super bowl this week. you have already heard from dennis and michelle and a little later in the newscast mike sugerman takes us for a ride on his cross-country trip to the superdome. we'll take a look at his -- well, first class accommodations. new at 5:00 oakland police are looking for whoever shot an 8 yearly girl. it happened about 2:30 this afternoon on 65th avenue in east oakland. she was taken to the hospital

with nonlife-threatening injuries. a blatant show of law breaking bravado stopped traffic in the middle of a busy bay area freeway in the middle of the day. cbs 5 reporter john ramos tells us it was enough to shock even the chp, who is now checking the license plate numbers of the cars in that video. reporter: midday traffic on 880 near the oakland coliseum moves along quickly. but sunday at around 4 p.m., it came to a complete halt because of this. [ screeching tires ] >> reporter: this video posted on youtube shows the complete northbound lanes blocked while cars spin doughnuts in the middle of the freeway. the chp says at least five or six cars were involved coming dangerously close to each other and people on the shoulder. if it was somebody's idea of fun, the chp clearly isn't laughing. >> people know it's not okay. they have to take a stand. they have to do what's right. they have to speak out against it and people are friends of these people.

it's like letting someone drive drunk. no. it's not okay. it's not going to happen. does it? it does. it's not okay. >> reporter: oakland is a city that prides itself on its progressive image and tolerance for dissent but some people think fostering that image has led to an acceptance of lawlessness. >> i don't really care if oakland is a world class city or not. that's irrelevant to me. i'm more concerned about oakland being a good place for me to live. >> reporter: even young people who say it was fun to watch admit it was a little over the top. you're from kansas. would you have seen something like this kansas? >> no, you would go to jail. >> reporter: the chp says they are looking for those involved but that won't be enough. >> everybody needs to get involved. it's not necessarily just highway patrol. you need to speak out. you need to tell these people it's not okay. >> reporter: in oakland, john ramos, cbs 5. a crash involving a gasoline tanker truck and several other cars snarled traffic on the eastbound lanes

of the bay bridge this afternoon. fortunately there was no gas leak and no injuries. three lanes were closed while the accident was cleared. as you can see in the video shot boy chopper 5 about a half hour later the backup extended into san francisco. all lanes are now open. boy scouts of america may be close to lifting its long- standing ban on gay members. a spokesman says the organization is discussing it an could announce a decision as early as next week. the controversial policy recently made bay area headlines when, in october, ryan andresen was denied eagle scout rank and kicked out of his moraga troop because he's gay. >> this is important regular on? that there are gay, bisexual and transgender "questioning" boy scouts and they deserve the same opportunity to participate. >> lifting the national ban would not give gay scouts automatic acceptance. instead individual troops would be able to make their own

[ giggles ] ♪ the one and only, cheerios ♪ the study shows how less new research suggests less may be more when it comes to treating breast cancer. >> the study shows how less invasive treatment may increase survival rates for those in the early stages. dr. kim mulvihill explains. >> but now it's changed. reporter: 50-year-old tony spring was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer. she decided on a lumpectomy a surgery that removes the tumor and part of the surrounding tissue. >> very happy with the choice because i didn't have to stay in the hospital for longer than

the surgery and a couple of hours after recovery. >> reporter: a new study from duke university finds women who undergo lumpectomies and radiation to treat their early stage breast cancer have better survival rates than women who undergo mastectomy. >> women make their own decisions. this will support them in the idea that it is a very good treatment option for them. >> reporter: previous research showed the two operations produce the same results. this is the first study to suggest lumpectomy with radiation may actually be a better option. over the last decade, more women are opting to have their entire breast removed especially younger patients. the study may reverse that tren. >> i think that sometimes patients think that because mastectomy is a bigger operation it means it's better treatment. >> reporter: experts a factors like tumor size and family history should be considered when trueing a treatment. toni went to three doctors. the first two recommended she have one or both breasts removed. she was relieved to find out a lumpectomy could be just as

effective. >> it made me feel very empowered that i really had a decision where before i really didn't think i had such a decision. >> reporter: she says if her cancer comes back she can have the mastectomy if she needs one. now, a lumpectomy is not for everyone. it's not recommended for women with large tumors or multiple tumors in the same breast or for those with certain genetic mutations like brca-1. but the majority of women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer over 80% are in candidates for a lumpectomy. >> 80%. >> 80%. >> amazingly high. >> thank you. okay. you got look at this. the estate in woodside, this just sold for $117 million. makes it one of the highest priced residential sales in the united states. the seller we know is a ceo of a san francisco-based private equity firm. it was built in 2005. it has a nice pool, tennis court, formal gardens. should have a lot more than

taking a little scenic route for his road to the dome and his latest stop along the way puts him in the city synonymous with ufos, roswell, new mexico. mike. reporter: new mexico, i have not seen any ufos. but you never know what's going to turn up. it's been a four-day journey so far with my wife, janice, and myself. we left on friday. and our first stop was in san bernardino. let me give you a little taste of what that was like. really? >> honey, most of it's yours. >> she's right. [ car starts ] >> road trip! [ ♪ [ music ]♪ i have been driving all night man -- ♪ [ music ]♪ >> reporter: long road to the big easy started hard. but things looked up when we got to our first stop. >> the wigwam motel. >> reporter: the wigwam motel

about 460 miles from the bay area in san bernardino. >> this property is located on route 66. >> by the name of frank red ford loved the concept of teepees and built it for people to stay who travel. >> reporter: built in 1949 one of only two on the route. the family took it over 7 years ago. >> it's a piece of americana you don't see anymore. >> reporter: heidi and her husband stayed the night we were there, they're from antioch. >> as a little kid we used to drive by and saw the teepees and always wanted to go in and see them. and so i told my husband about them. so we just booked a room and came down and stayed last night. >> reporter: she had her reservations. >> i heard there was actually a hooker hotel. >> reporter: there was a dark time in the '80s but all that is changed. >> inside is the completely normal room like you stay at any motel, refrigerator, tv, bed. >> reporter: kumar is a big cigar smoker. when he found out i enjoyed one now and again he said he had

pressure in control. that's nothing out there. we have cloud cover because we're on the eastern fringe of a large dome of high pressure. the flow is coming down from the north. we're not going to see any rain from this but we will see some high, thin cirrus cloud cover through the evening. high pressure slowly on the move. it's working its way here but the process will take a couple of days. tomorrow you'll be mostly sunny but because that strong northerly flow, it will still be breezy and chilly. 10, 15 miles per hour. small craft advisories along the coast. wednesday high pressure over top of us. that northerly influence will be gone. the 60s will be here. so mainly sunny skies with temperatures increasing throughout the week. all in all, not bad for late january. nights will be chilly 30s away from the water, 40s in the city. afternoons will be sunny and mild starting wednesday. and i don't see a drop of rainfall between now and when we'll be celebrating that 49ers victory hopefully cup on sunday night. concord tomorrow 57. san jose 58. couple of degrees below normal. mountain view down to 56. san rafael 56 in the city

big game. federal agents shut down a super bowl merchandise counterfeit operation today. cbs 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts shows us what happened during the raid. fans may not mind the fake super bowl merchandise because it's cheaper than the officially license the items but it is illegal to make and sell. so government agents swooped in on three sellers in the city today and hauled away boxes of counterfeit hats, scarves and t- shirts. customs officials say the fakes are usually poor quality and made in overseas sweatshops that have ties to criminal operations. they say the items will either be destroyed or donated. and beware of counterfeit tickets. if you find one below $1,100, odds are it's fake. even the cheapest ticket is expensive. online ticket resellers say the cheapest tickets so far sold for just under $1,100 last week. the median price is around

$2,600. while prices went up today, they are expected to drop a little as we get closer to sunday. typically cheapest on super bowl sunday. here's a cheaper game viewing option for the fourth year in a row the vine cinema in livermore will be showing the super bowl live on its 30- foot hd screen. admission is free but guests are required to buy at least two items from the snack bar. doors open at 1:30 and the event usually fills up quickly. the new parkway theater in oakland is also showing the super bowl live on its movie screen and, of course, there are a plethora of other options out there. and remember, if you have a consumer problem, give us a call 1-888-5-helps-u. we'll be right back.
