worse. they say 20-year-old adam lanza had enough bullets to kill about every child in the school if given enough time. >> magazine for the rifle and multiple magazines for the rifle and multiple magazines for both handguns. >> reporter: lanza reportedly ducked into a room and killed himself when he heard police arriving. for their bravery, the police received a standing ovation at sunday's memorial service. erica ferrari for cbs news, newtown, connecticut. >> yesterday's public memorial, president obama met privately with families of the victims. the school massacre in connecticut presents a challenge, obviously, for parents and educators. thousands of miles away. the key question: how should we communicate with our kids about it? san francisco's unified school district is one of many all across the bay acknowledging the difficulty educators and students have. mayor ed lee and the superintendent released a statement letting our schools know there will be counselors available today to help anyone

deal with trauma and stress. the images of last friday's school shooting across the country hit us at home. psychologists tell us younger children will have the hardest time understanding it all. >> so for those children it's really important to try and limit their exposure to these events, all the news coverage, and to more importantly to reassure to them the safety of their environment. >> older children will have a better understanding. but they will want to know more specifics. dr. berry says be open with them and stress this is an isolated incident. the school shooting in newtown, connecticut has sparked a fresh debate on gun control. last night president obama told mourners that he might be willing to tackle the issue of gun control and some congressional democrats say that friday's events have made the time right to renew the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

>> it will ban the sale, the transfer, the import and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively and it will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> of course, dianne feinstein got into higher office when her predecessor was killed by a gun. the weapons used in friday's shootings were legally purchased by adam lanza's mother. and it is certainly a sign of the times but a warning now for people who rely on social media like twitter to get news about the shooting investigation. a lot of those postings are hoaxes. connecticut authorities have a stern warning for anyone spreading false information. >> there's been some things in somewhat of a threatening manner. it is important to note that we have discussed with federal authorities that these issues are crimes. they will be investigated statewide and federally and prosecution will take place

when people perpetrating this information are identified. >> the social media misinformation actually includes people posing as the shooter and mimicking the crime and the crime scene. people at church services around the nation have been trying to find understanding in their faith as they pray for the victims in connecticut. parishioners with heavy hearts gathered at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. a memorial was put up with white ribbons. >> my heart is still in sorrow. i'm here to give things for my family and having my children and being blessed. >> i couldn't wrap my mind around who would kill all those little innocent children. >> church leaders at st. mary's say there are no easy answers. it's natural for people to feel shaken. they say above all it's important to talk about it. and for continuing coverage of

56 in san francisco. and 52 degrees in concord. this afternoon, highs expected to be in the 50s, maybe some low 60s toward san jose and also in the mountain view area. so it looks like we'll finally catch a break toward the afternoon. but then it looks like a chance of showers to make a return as we head in toward the latter part of this week. in fact, things could get wet in the latter part of this week. that's the latest. back to you. >> all right, off-and-on rain isn't the only thing we have to be worried about this morning. it's windy especially on the bay area bridges. so we have cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington at the bay bridge with more on what things are like at this moment. >> reporter: it is drizzling, temperatures in the 50s but behind me, traffic is moving smoothly but it is very wet. here's some video taken from last night and this morning. it has been raining on and off. and it will drizzle through at least part of the morning commute. there are also some wind gusts. now, nothing like what we saw earlier this month. but something that drivers

unharmed. the san francisco deputy accused of robbing a bank will be back in court today. police say phillip tong robbed a bank of america in the richmond district back in november. according to officers, tonge handed the teller a note saying he was armed. investigators used video to identify him along with fingerprints on the note. three people are in custody in connection with the murder of two teenaged girls in east oakland. the two adults and a juvenile were all arrested. investigators say one of them has made admissions connecting the trio to the murder. 16-year-old bobby sartain of oakland and 15-year-old raquel gerstel of san leandro were shot and killed in november 25th. an indiana man sunday arrest after allegedly threatening to kill people at an elementary school near his home. von meyer of cedar lake, indiana, was arrested yesterday. police later found 47 guns and about $100,000 worth of

ammunition in his home. >> to have that many guns and ammunition is scary. >> you're at their mercy. so -- but what we do about it, i don't have an answer for that. >> a man in custody allegedly made the threats during an argument with his wife who works at the school. he also threatened to set her on fire. he now faces charges of felony intimidation and domestic battery. a 22-year-old suspect is the focus of a manhunt after two police officers were fatally shot in topeka, kansas. the officers were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle when they were gunned down yesterday outside a grocery store. investigators have not yet revealed the suspect's name or motive. there are some signs of progress on capitol hill regarding efforts to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." sources say a new proposal from republican house speaker john boehner includes new taxes on people making more than a million dollars a year. he was previously opposed to

since september 2011. it will affect seven sutter hospitals in san francisco and two others in san jose. they are add odds over benefits and staffing. they are installing different piping at the richmond refinery to prevent fires. according to the "san francisco chronicle," this kind of piping is made to resist the type of corrosion that's believed to have caused the august fire at chevron. officials tests on the fire are not complete. later this week, state regulators are expected to approve a pg&e plan aimed at improving its pipeline safety guidelines. it is all in response to the explosion of a pg&e pipeline that killed eight people this san bruno two years ago. the "san francisco examiner" says the plan includes replacement of 185 miles of pipeline segments and automating more than 200 valves. well, berkeley city council
