worse. they say 20-year-old adam lanza had enough bullets to kill about every child in the school if given enough time. >> magazine for the rifle and multiple magazines for the rifle and multiple magazines for both handguns. >> reporter: lanza reportedly ducked into a room and killed himself when he heard police arriving. for their bravery, the police received a standing ovation at sunday's memorial service. erica ferrari for cbs news, newtown, connecticut. >> yesterday's public memorial, president obama met privately with families of the victims. the school massacre in connecticut presents a challenge, obviously, for parents and educators. thousands of miles away. the key question: how should we communicate with our kids about it? san francisco's unified school district is one of many all across the bay acknowledging the difficulty educators and students have. mayor ed lee and the superintendent released a statement letting our schools know there will be counselors available today to help anyone

deal with trauma and stress. the images of last friday's school shooting across the country hit us at home. psychologists tell us younger children will have the hardest time understanding it all. >> so for those children it's really important to try and limit their exposure to these events, all the news coverage, and to more importantly to reassure to them the safety of their environment. >> older children will have a better understanding. but they will want to know more specifics. dr. berry says be open with them and stress this is an isolated incident. the school shooting in newtown, connecticut has sparked a fresh debate on gun control. last night president obama told mourners that he might be willing to tackle the issue of gun control and some congressional democrats say that friday's events have made the time right to renew the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

>> it will ban the sale, the transfer, the import and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively and it will ban the same for big clips, drums or strips of more than 10 bullets. >> of course, dianne feinstein got into higher office when her predecessor was killed by a gun. the weapons used in friday's shootings were legally purchased by adam lanza's mother. and it is certainly a sign of the times but a warning now for people who rely on social media like twitter to get news about the shooting investigation. a lot of those postings are hoaxes. connecticut authorities have a stern warning for anyone spreading false information. >> there's been some things in somewhat of a threatening manner. it is important to note that we have discussed with federal authorities that these issues are crimes. they will be investigated statewide and federally and prosecution will take place

when people perpetrating this information are identified. >> the social media misinformation actually includes people posing as the shooter and mimicking the crime and the crime scene. people at church services around the nation have been trying to find understanding in their faith as they pray for the victims in connecticut. parishioners with heavy hearts gathered at st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. a memorial was put up with white ribbons. >> my heart is still in sorrow. i'm here to give things for my family and having my children and being blessed. >> i couldn't wrap my mind around who would kill all those little innocent children. >> church leaders at st. mary's say there are no easy answers. it's natural for people to feel shaken. they say above all it's important to talk about it. and for continuing coverage of

the story, visit our website, cbssf.com. time now is 4:35. our other big story, we're keeping an eye on a storm system moving through. >> it's not a huge deal. we'll shift gears and get the latest from mr. . k. >> very slick outside this morning. we have a lot of low-level moisture with this system that's moving onshore. high-def doppler radar picking up on some of that right now. some scattered showers popping up around the bay area. enough to get those roadways very slick so be careful. closer look now into parts of the east bay, you can see some scattered showers along the 680 near fremont and also into union city. this is what we are going see throughout the morning, pop-up showers throughout the bay area. the main cold front still lagging behind the system but a dry cold front will move through, may be falling apart. but behind that we have a lot of cold air. so here we go again. you will see the front move through and temperatures will be dropping around the bay area. outside cloudy, scattered showers right now. temperatures not too bad. it is 54 degrees in san jose.

56 in san francisco. and 52 degrees in concord. this afternoon, highs expected to be in the 50s, maybe some low 60s toward san jose and also in the mountain view area. so it looks like we'll finally catch a break toward the afternoon. but then it looks like a chance of showers to make a return as we head in toward the latter part of this week. in fact, things could get wet in the latter part of this week. that's the latest. back to you. >> all right, off-and-on rain isn't the only thing we have to be worried about this morning. it's windy especially on the bay area bridges. so we have cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington at the bay bridge with more on what things are like at this moment. >> reporter: it is drizzling, temperatures in the 50s but behind me, traffic is moving smoothly but it is very wet. here's some video taken from last night and this morning. it has been raining on and off. and it will drizzle through at least part of the morning commute. there are also some wind gusts. now, nothing like what we saw earlier this month. but something that drivers

should be aware of. there's also a small craft advisory that goes until 9 a.m. that means that some wind speeds could create hazardous wave conditions. that advisory is in effect in san francisco, san pablo, suisun bay and the west delta. past the toll plaza on to the bay bridge, there are some large puddles. so we say it every time that it rains, but it is worth repeating: make sure to leave room between you and the car in front of you. and stay safe and go slow on the roads. reporting at the bay bridge, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> she has her weather gear on so it must be raining. >> looks like it. >> to check how it's impacting the morning commute we'll going to gianna in the traffic center for the latest. >> we are going to head over to napa county where there is a closure highway 121, silverado trail, closed between ashlar and hagen. there are downed wires in the road so it's closed in both

[ laughter ] >> it won't be long before we're talking about that. >> you know all this stuff! around the bay area, we are look at scattered light showers. the roads are slick. hi-def doppler picking up on some of that moisture. you can see really scattered about the bay area. a lot of this low level stuff pushing through. nuisance showers throughout the morning so the commute this morning going to be very with the and by the afternoon, it looks like we may begin to dry out. but if you are heading out the door we have showers out there breezy conditions, too. temperatures not too bad. mainly into the 50s. but then as we get toward the afternoon, yeah, we are going to taper off the showers just a slight chance toward the afternoon showers. numbers in the 50s and 60s. cold front on approach now. we are seeing showers ahead of it the warm front but the cold front moving through is going to be dry. behind that you have that cold air and i think that's going tow reinforce all the cold air

we have seen over the past week or so. this afternoon things calm down. scattered showers early on today and then to the back side of the cold front, and then things begin to quite the down a little bit toward the afternoon. but all that cold air going to be in place. so keep those temperatures down once again. we'll see delays there. across the country 73 degrees in houston, 45 and cold in chicago mostly cloudy. 54 some showers into new york. around the bay area, 50s and maybe some low 60s this afternoon in the south bay and that will be about it. and then we are going to catch a break. toward tomorrow, just a slight chance of maybe a shower or two. but really partly cloudy skies. wednesday looks dry. but a return to some stormy weather on thursday staying unsettled right into the weekend, gianna. >> it's going to be a tough weekend with all that rain. let's head over to the roadways

now. 121 also known as silverado trail is completely shut down now due to an accident that may have hit a pole and took out some wires so there's lots of activity and crews on the scene trying to clean up the situation between stone crest drive and hagen road the 1800 block of sill rather is rad doe trail so give yourself some extra time to get around that area. they should have that reopened by 7:00 this morning. the rest of the bay area slick surfaces. 880 both directions looking good, somewhat windy. 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. now, the rest of the east bay nice travel times so far. altamont pass not showing any delays. and your eastshore freeway commute from the carquinez bridge to the maze only about 19 minutes right now. now, here's a look at conditions through milpitas. so far, so good no delays along

237 westbound if you are connecting between 880 and 101. northbound 280 through downtown san jose also clear as well as guadalupe parkway. and again we just checked in with chp a few minutes ago and so far not seeing a lot of accidents just yet but again with slick surfaces as folks enter and exit the freeway things get hairy on the on- and off-ramps. if you have a flight to catch, taking 101 this morning so far clear 92 to the 80 split in san francisco. no delays. two two looks good as well as 92. and we'll check the bay bridge in a few minutes. right now, not too bad. >> still a little wet. >> thank you. a close call for santa cruz fishermen. their boat started sinking. six men set sail yesterday. they called for help after their 18-foot boat started taking in water. it took an hour for rescuers to find them. everyone got out safely

unharmed. the san francisco deputy accused of robbing a bank will be back in court today. police say phillip tong robbed a bank of america in the richmond district back in november. according to officers, tonge handed the teller a note saying he was armed. investigators used video to identify him along with fingerprints on the note. three people are in custody in connection with the murder of two teenaged girls in east oakland. the two adults and a juvenile were all arrested. investigators say one of them has made admissions connecting the trio to the murder. 16-year-old bobby sartain of oakland and 15-year-old raquel gerstel of san leandro were shot and killed in november 25th. an indiana man sunday arrest after allegedly threatening to kill people at an elementary school near his home. von meyer of cedar lake, indiana, was arrested yesterday. police later found 47 guns and about $100,000 worth of

ammunition in his home. >> to have that many guns and ammunition is scary. >> you're at their mercy. so -- but what we do about it, i don't have an answer for that. >> a man in custody allegedly made the threats during an argument with his wife who works at the school. he also threatened to set her on fire. he now faces charges of felony intimidation and domestic battery. a 22-year-old suspect is the focus of a manhunt after two police officers were fatally shot in topeka, kansas. the officers were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle when they were gunned down yesterday outside a grocery store. investigators have not yet revealed the suspect's name or motive. there are some signs of progress on capitol hill regarding efforts to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." sources say a new proposal from republican house speaker john boehner includes new taxes on people making more than a million dollars a year. he was previously opposed to

any tax hikes on the wealthy. president obama and congressional democrats are calling for higher taxes on those making at least a quarter million dollars. president obama's re- election will be made official today as the electoral college members gather in all 50 states to vote. those votes of course are based on the november general election results. the obama-biden ticket has 332 votes compared with 206 for the romney/ryan team. well, employees at major ports back east and in the gulf coast could soon be on strike. the international longshoreman's association is calling for that action if a deal on a new contract is not reached soon. a walkout by 15,000 dock workers would hold billions of dollars worth of imported goods. and thousands of bay area nurses plan to walk off the job on christmas eve. a spokesman for the california nurses association says it will be a one-day strike, the 8th

since september 2011. it will affect seven sutter hospitals in san francisco and two others in san jose. they are add odds over benefits and staffing. they are installing different piping at the richmond refinery to prevent fires. according to the "san francisco chronicle," this kind of piping is made to resist the type of corrosion that's believed to have caused the august fire at chevron. officials tests on the fire are not complete. later this week, state regulators are expected to approve a pg&e plan aimed at improving its pipeline safety guidelines. it is all in response to the explosion of a pg&e pipeline that killed eight people this san bruno two years ago. the "san francisco examiner" says the plan includes replacement of 185 miles of pipeline segments and automating more than 200 valves. well, berkeley city council

members are expected to vote tomorrow on whether to declare the city a no drone zone. unmanned aircraft are used by the department of homeland security to watch over u.s. ports and international borders. the fbi and a dozen police and sheriff's departments also have them. critics contend that the drones are an invasion of privacy. we have to have our gas price story for the morning and this time it's encouraging news. gas prices continue to fall. aaa says the statewide average price for a gallon of regular is $3.57 down 24 cents from mid- november. the highest price in the bay area is san francisco at $3.62 but that's down 30 cents from a month ago. oakland at $3.51 and the average in san jose is also $3.51. pleasant surprise for people parking in san francisco. never easy. the city's newer sf park meters charged less on average than the old models. the 7,000 newer devices set

here's a live look at a homn sloat boulevard.. this is r ross the street from welcome back. it's 4:55. we're following a developing story in san francisco. you are taking a live look at a home on sloat boulevard. this is right across the street from the lakeshore plaza shopping center. police say there was a possible home invasion robbery around 3:00 this morning we're hearing. the crime tape went up at the home as they arrived. investigators are tight-lipped but cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is on the scene right now gathering interviews and more details. and we are seeing some showers around the bay area.
