good weather is apparently leading to good progress on the bay bridge. it is closed for construction, with a detour for the westbound approach to the new bay bridge. nonknapp is in oakland where -- don knapp says it may be finished ahead of schedule. >> reporter: it would not be unusual to have rain and cold weather and caltrans allowed for that no doubt, but in fact the weather is pretty good. rain and cold weather would slow down the paving and the painting but the good weather today, they are moving along just fine. here is the main focus of the work this weekend. the place where the new bridge meets the oakland shore. caltrans closed the westbound lanes, to move the existing roadway on the oakland side. the detour allows room for work on the new westbound approach to the new bridge. it will stay in effect until the new bridge is opened. and as has become usual for the holiday weekend closures in recent years, having the bridge in one direction shut down provides a great opportunity to get other work done. and that's what they're doing.

>> as it stands, right now, we got a lot of work done last night. some of the pre-demolition for the big demo effort starting around 6:00 tonight, completed. and we started to knock off the extra things we're trying to do for the maintenance on the bridge. >> caltrans could finish early. and open the bridge before the 5:00 a.m. tuesday target. it is all very weather- dependent, and so far, the weather has cooperated. >> later, tonight, if things go well, late tonight, probably around 10:00 p.m., at the earliest, we may be able to start the striping effort. again, it will depend on weather. we've had a very safe condition out there. no issues with access. and regional traffic has been good as well. here with video supplied by caltrans workers cut through a section of the 80-year-old bridge right now and this weekend's closure allows so much work to to be done, a demolition of the existing

bridge and existing detour, that the new bridge may come into service six months earlier than originally planned. >> bart says some 45 different operations are going on with the bridge tonight and that means a lot of work will be done but opens up the possibility that they could find another problem. we always keep that cracked i- bar in mind when they do things like this. it looks like it is pretty much under control, moving ahead of schedule. no problems yet. >> let's hope it stays that way. thank you. let's look at the traffic maps and see what the alternate routes look like right now. this is the richmond-san rafael bridge and this is 101 south. this is the look at the areas around the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. a look at the san mateo dumbarton bridges, right there. and chopper 5 is over the north bay. and 101 south headed to san francisco, it is a crawl. bumper to bumper traffic. runs for miles. >> there are options that do not include driving. bart will run 24 hours.

but trains will run hourly and stop at only 14 stations. and there will be extra ferry service between oakland, almeda, and vallejo, through monday. and muni will continue regular service to treasure island all weekend. stay with cbs 5, cbs-sf.com and kcbs radio for all of the information you will need to get around the closures this weekend. officers, programs, and services have all been cut. but tonight, we can tell you something is being restored in oakland. the police department is hiring. anne makovec introduces us to potential new recruits. >> oakland is not a bad place to work. >> reporter: justin wants to be on the police force. some of the new positions will be re-hires after 80 officer were laid off in 2010 but the department is hiring 40 trainees looking at cop jobs in several cities. >> a lot of the times, you will find they want a bachelor's degree, or they want an academy graduate, or a lateral.

>> reporter: education-wise, all you immediate is a high school diploma but in order to get in the academy, you have to pass a written test and a physical test and a polygraph. >> reporter: a workshop is aimed at helping recruits pass the written test before a real life test on the streets every day, in a city named one of of the most dangerous in the nation. a lot of these recruits grew up in oakland. >> i love challenges. >> reporter: the police department is one of the few oakland agencies able to hire right now. dozens of city employees will be laid off, on wednesday. but the pd loses about four officers per month, either quit or retire, and now with $10.7 million of grant money from the fed, the city is able to afford to bulk up the force. >> i'm going to school. i'm getting physically fit. i feel like mentally, like i have the mentality to go out there and do my best and serve my community. >> at the end of the day, the police department still has to

headline on espn's mobile web site discussing lin's responsibility for the knicks loss to the hornets. in a statement apologizing espn called the slur dwrin-- indefensible and appropriate action will be taken. the same phrase was used on air by an espn anchor last week. from active duty to active in retirement. the naval war ship at port in the bay area and how it is being made ready for the public. elizabeth wenger has a look at the weekend forecast. is there any rain inle forecast? she will tell us.

here is a live look at the golden gate bridge. a lot of motorists using alternate routes since the westbound direction of the bay bridge is closed over this president's day weekend for construction. as you can see, quarter to 7:00 on saturday night and a lot of people are finding ways around the bridge. and more than 100 children had their teeth checked for free today. the school of dentistry held the give kids a smile clinic for ages 4 to 17. it is a national program the

university has been involved with for five years. people came from all over the bay area. >> a private office, if you go, it would be a lot of money. and you can't beat free. free and all of these new doctors are helping out. it is great. >> it is an enormous difference. if you start a kid in the right direction, they can have a healthy mouth for their life. and if not, they can have problems for the rest of their life. >> about 45 million americans don't have dental coverage and dental decay is one of the most common illnesses among children. well, time is running out for the famed battleship that spent years in suisun bay. and the uss iowa will leave the bay area in a few months for good. lisa washington shows how visitors are taking full advantage before the ship's final voyage. >> reporter: walking on board the uss iowa begins a journey in time with the large guns and bridges and turrets the world war ii battleship is a living history lesson brought to life

by 87-year-old john wolfenbarger. >> these guns are not fired from inside the turret. they are only loaded in there. >> john volunteers each weekend sharing his stories from the iowa and world war ii and thrilled that his beloved vessel is getting a makeover and soon will be a museum. >> i am. you better believe it. >> reporter: the iowa is being refurbished in the port of richmond. before making its final stop in san pedro at the port of los angeles. >> you grew up at your mom's place. and you know your way around. >> and dave has spent two years aboard the ves until the 1980s and now works at the technology director for the refurbishing project. >> it is a battleship upgraded and we didn't have all of the communications equipment in the '80s that we have available now. >> reporter: they remember the iowa in better days. this man served as a midshipmen in 1947.

>> for a 17-year-old, it was quite an adventure. it was confusing. very confusing. >> reporter: confusing, he says, in part because of iowa's massive size. 887 feet. yet, even with its rusty hull and deteriorating deck, the iowa still manages to be a popular attraction. across the pier, it is expected to be $5 million for the repairs. and they say preserving the history is priceless. lisa washington, cbs 5, in richmond. long holiday weekend. elizabeth wenger joins us with the forecast. i didn't know which way to look, elizabeth. there she is. now she is going this way. >> hello, ann. that's right. we're talking weather. and we're talking a chance of rain. when is is going to come? we will talk about it in a minute. but current conditions out the door right now, not too bad and temperatures mostly in the 50s outside right now and we have some sunshine, and later on this afternoon, we had a drizzly start. but then it turned out to be a pretty nice day and 52 right now in san rafael, and 55 out

in oakland and 55 if you're in fairfield. for tonight, some of these clouds will decrease and the winds die down. gusty conditions this afternoon. and it is going to keep temperatures on the cooler side, and mostly in the 30s to low 40s across the bay area and we will see patchy fog, especially in some of the north bay valleys. by tomorrow, partly cloudy skies for the most part across the bay area. and it should stay relatively dry. with temperatures mostly in the 50s. we know with the upper deck of the bay bridge shut down and the construction going on, people are keeping a close eye on the skies, and we can see our rain chances. it doesn't look like much but there are going to be a few sprinkles possible, mainly in the north bay. again, light sprinkles, it looks like overnight sunday, and possibly by -- through monday afternoon. but again, light stuff. and not much. and by monday evening, it is all going to be out of here. and then high pressure really begins to build, tand looks like it is continuing that way, through the end of the workweek. so pinpoint forecast, overnight lows, mostly in the 30s, and the 40s across the bay area.

and 39 in concord. 37 in napa. and coming in at 46 overnight in san francisco, and again, we could see a little bit of patchy valley fog. mainly in the north bay. and for temperatures tomorrow, looks like mainly in the 50s. 57 in oakland. and 57 in concord. and 58 in santa rosa. still kind of a similar story to what we saw today. we should see some peaks of sunshine by the afternoon. and so we are going to keep the chance of rain in our forecast. it looks like overnight sunday, into monday morning, or maybe midday monday. but it is going to be very light. mostly sprinkles if anything at all. and mainly north of the golden gate bridge. by monday evening, it is out of here and then quickly, through the end of the workweek, the temperatures are going to reach the low 70s. in some spots. so it is going to be a pretty nice end to the week. all right, that is weather. for an update on your sports, let's go to kim and check on that. >> thanks, liz. st. mary's has a chance to improve its tournament resume. and it was the closest finish ever at the el camino real
