home video captured it. a raging gun battle on a bay area freeway taking a series of alarming twists and turns. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. well, it is being called every officer's worst nightmare. it started when the chp pulled over a car driving eratically on interstate 580 near graham avenue in oakland. now the fbi is involved. kiet do shows us how a traffic stop escalated into a shootout and then a bomb scare and much more. >> reporter: it looks like it finally might be reopening out here at 580 westbound in oakland. you can see here some of these chp patrol cars are getting put onto a flatbed trailer. looks like the freeway could be open any minute now. to give you some idea how violent it was out here. see all those yellow markers on the ground every one is for a shell casing that was fired out here on the scene. about 60 shots at least fired out here around midnight in oakland early this morning. neighbors say it sounded like

the wild west. just when they were getting ready to clear the scene investigators found a suspicious looking package. called a bomb squad. and a few hours later -- >> all normal. >> reporter: it is unclear what it was. the bomb squad found a white binder labeled california. given the amount of weaponry and possible explosives found the fbi showed up. after all this drama no one is taking any chances. >> this incident that took place is absolutely every officer's worst nightmare. >> reporter: at midnight sunday morning crsm hsmp officers pulled over the bullet ridden white toyota tundra which was driving eratically in oakland. an officer walked up to the truck on the passenger side. >> in which he observed the suspect reach for a handgun and he starts firing shots at the officer. >> reporter: the suspect was armed with a handgun, shotgun,

high powered rifle and lots of ammo. a total of 10 chp officers showed up and opened fire with everything they have including shot guns and assault rifles of their own. at least 60 rounds were fired. the gun fight lasted about 8 minutes. >> he was firing multiple shots. then he would get back into the truck. then he would lean out and fire multiple shots and get back into the truck. >> reporter: turns out the suspect was wearing a bullet proof vest and gave up after getting hit multiple times in the arms and legs. two officers were cut in the face by flying glass as bulletses shattered windows. it is amazing no officers were seriously hurt given the caliber bullets from the suspect's rifle pierced the door of the patrol cars. >> wherever he was going there is no doubt his intent was to cause serious harm to someone or a group of people. >> reporter: an fbi spokesperson was not immediately available. what we would like to know is whether or not this has been classified as a domestic terror investigation. as far as the suspect goes he has been described as a 45-year-

old white male from california. he is a two-time offender. he was possibly going on to his third strike after this offense. convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. right now he is in serious but stable condition at highland hospital. >> the freeway expected to open shortly? >> any minute now. >> kiet do, thank you. we are now learning the identity of a man shot and killed by a police officer in oakland. he is 48-year-old fred collins of oakland. it all started yesterday morning when police were called about a man armed near the fruitvale b.a.r.t station. when oakland police arrived they tried using their stun gun on collins but then police say he charged one of the officers with one of his knives. he was pronounced dead at the scene after police officers

shot him. today the guardian angels hit the streets. last week's 80 oakland police officers that were laid off. about 10% of the force. city leaders say 120 additional officers could lose their jobs if voters reject tax measures on the november ballot. now, citizen groups are patrolling the city. >> instead of sitting around complaining, get up, help the community. you can help the police department as well. you can be their eyes and ears. you don't have to wear a uniform. we are beefing up patrols because we need to and we want to. >> the guardian angels say they are now trying to recruit volunteers to join the effort. planning to car pool across the golden gate bridge tomorrow morning? you'll need fast track. starting with tomorrow's commute cash will no longer be accepted for car pools. the only way to pay the reduced $3 toll you need a fast track

tag and you have to pass through a toll booth to verify there are three or more people in the car. fire stations closing for good. fulton avenue. staffing levels will be reduced at the remaining stations. instead of 18 firefighters on duty there will be 15 during each shift. vallejo filed for bankruptcy in 2008. and since that time it has also lost a third of its police officers. >> an estimated 25,000 walkers showed up today for the largest aids fund-raising event in northern california and raised more than $3 million for local aids organizations. the annual aids walk san francisco took place in golden gate part. a crowd cheered as they walked 6.2 miles. the money raised will provide testing and care services at 60 bay area aids organizations. many walkers have very personal

reasons to participate. >> we are doing the aids walk in honor of my dad. he passed away 16 years ago from aids. so we are walking in honor of him to keep his spirit alive. >> they raised more than $76 million since 1977. bay area animal shelters hoping to find homes for dozens of pets to ease overcrowding. the east county animal shelter of alameda county has seen a sudden influx of pets because of the closure of a nearby shelter. today it held an adoption fair and dozens of dogs, cats and kittens were available. organizers say about 17 animals will be adopted this weekend. >> the animals are not adopted and we run out of room, there is no choice but euthanizing. that's what we are trying to reduce or eliminate. >> organizers say overcrowding issues will most likely continue as new animals are brought in every day.

collectors and treasure hunters that were up early today to go to opening day at the newest flea market. a wide variety of merchandise to buy and sell. organizers have a contract with the city to run the market every third sunday of the month in the parking lot at candle stick point. the new fair isn't like a typical flea market. >> differentiates this from any others is that everything here is 20 years or older. and so there is no flea market items like tube socks and things of that nature. >> the fair will be around for at least a year. organizers have an option with the city to extend that lease. from long beach, mississippi. what b.p. plans to do next. gathering school supplies for kids who need them most. the woman who inspired this

if it isn't broke, don t fix it. the cap over the damaged oil well is holding steady, so b-p eaving it alone b.p. is adopting a new strategy in the gulf of mexico. if it isn't broke don't fix it. the cap over the damaged oil well is holding steady so b.p. is leaving it alone and now working on a permanent solution. >> reporter: b.p. has decided not to mess with success and not make any changes until a permanent well is in place next month. >> we are hopeful that if the encouraging signs continue we will leave it. >> reporter: it rests with the government though which could still choose to pipe the oil to ships on the surface. that option would relieve pressure on the broken well but could also lead to millions of gallons of oil spilling back

into the gulf. both sides downplayed the apparent contradiction in plans. >> reporter: with no oil flowing for the first time crews are cleaning up more crude that is being released. even though the beaches aren't as crowded as they usually are more people did turn out to get away from the week. >> reporter: in louisiana, fishermen were back now that recreational waters are open again. in mississippi where far less oil washed up on shore families waited and played in the warm water. >> i was concerned. i haven't been out to this kind of water and i thought the brown might be due to the oil. but no, it is the natural scenic water. >> we want people to come and enjoy it. there is nothing wrong here. >> reporter: the oil spill is still on everyone's mind and they know they likely have years to go before it is gone for good. cbc news, long beach, mississippi. big help coming for bay area kids who need it most.

every year volunteers stuff gift bags with new shoes, gift card and school supplies. they will be delivering them at the beginning of the school year to more than 3000 homeless children who live in bay area shelters. as supplies were put together by my new red shoes and it was sponsored by a woman who wished she could have new shoes to wear when she was a kid on her first day of school. triple digit temperatures gripping most of the country. lawrence will have the forecast next. ,,,,,,,,,,

heat wave right now. families headed to pools around dallas, to stay cool. the he much of the country sweltering in the heat today. people heading to the pool in dallas. heat index well over 100 degrees today. not over yet for these folks. dallas will see 100-degree temps for much of the week. eastern u.s. and all of the south seeing high temperatures. pretty good for us though. >> we have a few hot spots. inland. triple digits towards the sacramento valley. outside today you could find some cool air out toward the immediate coastline. temperatures running 30 degrees cooler in those parts. out toward ocean beach right now. couple more folks out there today as we are seeing a little more sunshine but you can already see some of the fog in the distance. going to watch that. into the bay overnight going to see a whole lot more of that in the coming days. san jose looking nice and clear. beautiful evening on tap now in the bay area.

looks like that will continue to be the case. especially many places away from the immediate coastline. weather wise the rest of the evening. nice clear skies. temperatures warm inlands. 70s, even 80s. inside the bay a little breezy. temperatures in the mid-60s to the upper 70s. out toward the coastline got a couple patches of fog. now tomorrow, looks like another hot day in spots inland but well inland. we are talking antioch into brentwood. mid-90s there. tri-valleys upper 80s and low 90s. seabreeze in the afternoon in toward oakland. santa clara valley. out toward the coastline. patchy fog. fog really been the story the last seven days or so. will continue to be. going to see more over the next couple days. helping them break a lot break . 59 degrees in pacifica. traveling around the state

you'll see triple digits in the interior valley. 104 degrees in fresno. 96 in sacramento. high pressure looking to break down. the ridge continuing to retreat. that means we will see cool onshore breeze kicking in but it will be slow cooling especially for the folks inland. interior valleys temperatures starting to come down. patchy fog around the bay area to start your day tomorrow. as we head to the afternoon it will start to break up a bit. temperatures will still keep you on the warm side especially inside the bay. those numbers running in the 50s and 60s coastside. 70s and 80s inside the immediate bay. antioch, brentwood up into the mid-90s. north bay expecting temperatures into the 70s and 80s. next couple days we will watch the temperatures starting to down. latter part of the week. morning low cloud and fog. here is dennis o'donnell with sports. >> lawrence, you say louis

a virtual unknown when he arrived had a four shot lead going to the final round. tiger woods looking ordinary all week. even par today. 13 shots back. in 2000 he didn't hit one that the bunker famously. today he couldn't get it out. paul casey to cut it to 3. but at the 9th louis jars this putt for eagle to get his lead back to four strokes. casey started to go for it and it got him the scenic tour of st. andrews. lost his ball. triple bogey. there he is. drains the birdie putt. 6 to go. putting his name on the trophy. louis oosthuizen nearly challenging the all time scoring record. a tiger like performance. won by 7 strokes. not a bad day for your first major championship and mighty big day for south africa. snoop happy birthday to mr. nelson mandela back in south africa. he is 92 years old today.

i have hit more good shots left handed than i hit in the last year. >> an eight iron. >> barkley finished dead last. >> that is stephen curry making his debut. warrior point guard finished tied with a quarterback. third career win in lake tahoe. john miller tonight on "game day" going into the hall of fame and very well deserved. the guy has really been breaking most of the news, marcus thompson will be in studio to talk about the new warriors ownership as we get set for a new reign over in oakland and at the coliseum. >> will it be a better team to watch? >> can't be much worse. under chris they only made one playoff in i think 16 years. the bar is not raised very high. but they have a very loyal fan base and they are in a pretty good t.v. market. hence 450 million.
