foreclosures across the state. why would anybody in their right mind run for governor. one expert boils it down to one personality trait. >> plus aids walk sf under way at golden gate park. the fundraiser comes just days after president obama announced a new strategy to fight hiv and aids. so how will the new policy impact the bay area. the president to have black coalition on aids is here to explain. the final numbers about the turn out in the states primary election that just happened. we take a look and say what they tell us about how voters are turning out these days. >> we will get to all that in just a moment but first leading the news. both directions of 580 shut down this morning and two officers hospitalized following a freeway shoot out in oakland it began overnight when two officers pulled over a truck 580 and grand avenue. as officers approached they saw

multiple guns inside and called for back up when the suspect began shooting and officers fired back. >> multiple rounds were exchanged the suspect was taken into custody and the two officers were injured with nonlife threatening injuries. >> it is believed their injuries are from rich share and broken glass not actually gunshot wounds the suspect was shot several times in spite of the fact he was wearing body armor he is in serious condition. all right bart and oakland police promising a thorough investigation after officers shot and killed a man they say charged them with knives. it happened near fruit vail bart station. the man was walking down east 12th street holding a knife in each hand. oakland police called bart police because the man was walking toward fruit vail bart station. the man took off when they spotted him. the police officer told him

stop stop stop he went this way and that way and that way. >> early reports from at least one witness is he was yelling shoot me when the bart officers first made contact with him. the man turns towards one of the officers who attended to phase him knife in hand and -- phase him, knife in hand, charges the officer. the officers on scene discharge their firearm striking the suspect. the identity of the suspect has not been released no officers were hurt. police say they are prepared to keep the peace. a rally planned tomorrow will be the first in the bay area supporting the former bart police officer convicted of shooting oscar grant. the walk has been dubbed in support of mazer lee and officers -- meheserle and officers. on to the gulf of mexico, where a cap blocking oil from

the busted well appears to be possibly holding. >> scientists want to make sure there are no more signs of trouble since the pressure on the seal is lower than expected. bp has decided to add another day of monitoring. >> reporter: no new leaks and no busted well so far bps experimental cap is preventing any more oil gushing into the water. the longer the test goes the morconfidence we have. >> reporter: for two days the engineers monitored the pressure and temperature. pressure readings have not increased which means there are likely no additional leaks. oil will flow temporarily into the gulf while bp moves to a new containment system that will funnel oil to ships on the surface. once the well is capped for good gulf residents know they have a long way to go before getting back to normal and are anxious to move forward. >> we are not seeing the

tourism. >> reporter: she runs a farmers market in long beach mississippi. the oil has brought a sense of dread to her coastal town like hurricane coo trina. >> that uncertainty and fear where things are beyond control. you have a helpless feeling. >> reporter: despite the economic hardships caused by the spill it was a busy saturday at the market. vendors say this is an important time to support their community. what motivates you to do all this? >> just the love of it. >> reporter: locals are too nervous to be hopeful about an end to the spill but won't let the oil drive them away from their way of life. cbs news long beach mississippi. well, meanwhile millions of americans who have lost unemployment benefits could soon get them back. on tuesday senate democrats hope to break a republican filibuster that blocked extension of unemployment

benefits and they believe they will have votes as soon as the new democratic senator from west virginia is sworn in. one of the biggest aids fundraisers in the nation. it is on now at golden gate park. >> aids walks, sf rally raising millions for hiv aids organizations. it comes days after president obama announced a new strategy to target high risk groups to fight the disease. charles huff from black coalition on aids joins us. charles the epidemic has been in the bay area for decades. our question is who remains the most vulnerable and where are we seeing new cases pop up? >> well, the president's new policy bears out the numbers. basically, in united states african americans are 13% of the population but 50% of the infected cases. in the bay area, where 6% of the population and 14% of the

infected population. >> why do you thing that is? >> i think it stems from the labels we put on aids in the beginning as well as social infrastructure within the black community and labels. >> is it being spread through sex or spread through needles? >> both. the main are needle exchange through sex and our main groups are needle exchange, men seeking men for sex as well as trance gender community. >> let's talk about the aids walk. we are talking about raising millions of dollars today but there has been a little bit of questions raised where the money is going. it is not staying here in san francisco so groups like yours will not say the millions that come from today's event. >> in their slight defense some of the money today does go to our organization for instance today, bca has a group walking

in the walk. depending on the amount of money we raise as a group dictates how much we get back from the walk. the bigger donation i think is what you are referring to. >> right a new york times article a lot of the money goesout of san francisco. >> there has been a huge shift with people supporting aids in africa i don't in any way begun them getting funding and help that is seriously needed there, however, i don't think we can now move to africa without keeping in touch with what is happening here in the u.s. >> back to what is happening here in the u.s. if we are having the epidemic shift into minority communities, is it still the astigma temp assigned to being gay in the african american community and drug use preventing the education from going on. >> exactly. if you notice a few minutes ago i said men seeking men. >> right. >> in the african american community that is a term we use

to draw in people who don't want the quote unquote gay label because there are a lot of men who identify as men having sex with men but do not want or identify with the gay label. they are receiving education or where is the -- >> is it education or just that they won't accept -- well, i mean we have the services and education for years is it a cultural block or what? >> i personally believe it is a cultural block in the sense of not being tapped into what the general population is looking at. and you also need to look at it i believe on a socio-economic level depending on who you are talking to. we have a challenge in that we have to talk to a wide spectrum where as for instance the white gay community could speak to that community in a singular succinct way where as we have to break it down and look at

a slim margin, 15,000 votes. the secretary of state declared state assembly man mike valines. we have the final numbers on voter turn out for the primary, only one third of eligible california voters actually showed up at the polls. new numbers show a growing trend in the way people vote, 58% of voters cast their ballots by mail. that's right. candidates for california governor have been doing all they can to get your votes as well. >> some wonder why meg whitman and jerry brown would want the job of being governor. >> turn on any tv in california. >> 40 years in politics, failure has followed him everywhere. >> you will see the two leading candidates for governor slugging it out. >> for decades she couldn't spare a moment to vote.

politics. >> like to be in the spotlight. >> yes and back room. >> and back room. all right. so some politics to weather. jim bernard is off so i am pulling double duty. we had a grey start here in the bay. those coastal clouds, that marine layer we see all morning long it is here. good news not nearly as deep as yesterday which means it will burn off earlier and you will see more sunshine closer to the bay meaning temperatures will warm as well. checking out that daily planner today, if you are heading out and about, we have some good news for you. plenty of sunshine nice warm temperatures as i grow for you on screen. nice warm temperatures for you on screen. mostly sunny and warm, we are starting off with coastal clouds along the coast patchy fog partial clearing i do think some clouds will stick around right along the coast keeping temperatures cooler by the coast. inland, cool not the story.

triple digits for central valley, warm yosemite but coastal clouds that natural cooling effect pacific we are staying in the 60s for your coastal locations. let's check in with the satellite and explain what is going on here. why are we so warm for inland locations and by the bay, high pressure in place will keep us warm but don't get used to it a cooling trend continues tomorrow and upper level trough dipping in from the gulf of alaska bringing those temperatures down significantly. coastal clouds today will continue to deepen as we move into the workweek and that will keep temperatures cooler. for today the bullet points, valley heat coastal clouds we will see warm temperatures for the inland valleys for south bay and even east bay locations oakland, places on the water still going to stay relatively warm because marine layer not nearly as thick as it has been. yesterday we saw a pretty strong on shore flow ushered those coastal clouds inland today not so much. northerly flow and that will

help to clear things out. take me through the day with our pinpoint fog cast notice how it clears by lunchtime today. most locations with the exception of some of those coastal spots. staying nice and cool, in the upper 50s to low 60s. most locations south bay, upper 80s. some of the warmest spots, morgan hill, hot spot, 92. east bay, we will be flirting with triple digits. farther inland you travel the warmer temperatures go. back toward the bay nice and comfortable temperatures low 70s. oakland, alameda, berkeley and try valley. low 90s. warm but not very very hot. i hear phil matier laughing i wonder if it is the forecast. i will join him as we finish up here. san francisco at 70 today andsonoma, napa, wine country temperatures warmer up there. look at the seven-day forecast that cooling trend i have been talking about 90s for the next

the officers who just tased him, knife in hand charges the officer. at this point other officers on scene to protect the officer discharge their firearms striking the suspect. >> the identity of the suspect has not been released no officers were hurt. police say they are prepared to keep the peace at a rally planned tomorrow. it will be the first in the bay area supporting the former bart police officer convicted of shooting oscar grant. the rally has been dubbed in support of meheserle and leo, which stands for law enforcement officers. it will be held in walnut creek and set to run 2 to 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. all right. bp engineers will take an extra day to evaluate the new cap they put on the blown out well in the gulf of mexico. they have been monitoring pressure around the seal since thursday. while readings are lower than expected they are slowly

increasing. that means there are no likely new leaks. the cap is blocking oil from the busted well and it appears to be holding. that is good news. >> at this point, there is no evidence that we don't have integrity. the fact that the pressure is continuing to rise is giving us more and more confidence. >> coast guard admiral alan says once the testing is complete it will be hooked to pipes and ships that collect the oil. in the course of that operation some crude will be released into the gulf to relieve pressure temporarily. >> millions of americans have lost unemployment benefits but may soon get them back. on tuesday, senate democrats will raise a fill buster they believe they will have enough votes as soon as the new democratic senator from west virginia is sworn in. >> the governors race makes its way to meg whitman's front

door. >> nurses angry with her marched to her home. they say she attacked them with unsolicited phone calls, mailers and press attacks. whitman says the california nurses association started the negative campaign about her on its own website. i sat down with willie brown to get his take on what could be a major battle of this gubernatorial race. what role does the image of the nurses really play in california politics? >> under the right circumstances phil they have the most positive image. two people you want endorsements from. nurses and firefighters. no one is ever angry at either one. unless you can figure out how to make them angry. >> that is the image a nurse helps you a firefighter helps you. every politician in california would love to have their endorsements but they are going against meg she has a real

problem. >> well, they are filling their oats frankly because if you will recall about four years or so ago they won against arnold schwarzenegger and brought him to his knees. he backed off, he did not interfere with staffing arrangements he backed off on his promise to do that he stopped calling them whatever names he was calling them and stopped saying he was going to kick their butts any more. they felt empowered because all of a sudden they moved from being just respectable endorsement organization to a mighty political arm. that is what they are attempting to demonstrate against queen meg. this mighty political arm we see it with the nursefirefighters but how much about this is about nursing issues and how much union politics trying to assert themselves in the democratic party. >> i don't think they are trying to assert themselves

within the democratic party. they are really unto themselves but what it is about, they are organizing and being able to command the whole landscape as it relates to nursing. they want all of the nurses under the california nurses association. and if they do get them, their force becomes more powerful they will have a greater influence on the health care delivery system than they now have. >> and they are very big backers of single payer health care initiatives. >> absolutely they have been for a very long time. advocates of single payer. >> what is it like dealing with nurses and firefighters when you are behind closed doors with groups like this. >> in the past they have never had the kind of muscle they currently have. they only had the great image and in my day when i dealt with them, that image was really important, i have candidates who needed to be pollerred i

had canada -- polished i had candidates that need to be cleaned up. i could put them through a nurse or guys in a badge, i would eliminate warts that would normally be on that person. >> one reason they are so active against meg whitman is because jerry brown doesn't have his money. they have the money and troops they are trying to get the attention to define her as a negative force because their candidate doesn't have the money himself. >> whitman is saying you are not mad at me because of my politics but because i am opposing jerry brown. >> it is the policy. >> right. >> one big issue between the nurses and arnold schwarzenegger was the patient to nurse ratio. nurses want to look after more apents than share have. meg says i have nothing to do with that trying to take the message directly to members and that angered the leaders of the

union and they also say she is insincere. >> right. and saying she harassed them calling members she said i just wanted members to know what i am talking about. your leaders are saying what i am not actually saying. >> she is trying to push back and that will make it more interesting one thing you can say about the nurses union they are theatrical they show up with queen meg and people all dressed up. this battle will go on and stay interesting as we go through the race. >> still ahead, larry lost out on buying the warriors but it may not have been just about the highest bidder. the miscalculation that possibly cost him the team. >> that's right. of course weather coming up midsummer cool down headed our way. when you can expect to see cooler temperatures ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

payroll tax holiday for every unemployed worker they hire. you don't need to pay for tax cuts. when jobs are created, consumption increases. >> when it comes to stopping illegal immigrants. >> yes, i support the arizona law they felt they had no choice. what is odd about the obama administration if their point in suing arizona is that the arizona law takes away prerogative from the federal government why are they not suing the city of san francisco for being a sanctuary city. >> she says she supports whatever california citizens want when it comes to same-sex marriage. >> people get uncomfortable when a single judge or a handful of judges, unelected, unaccountable, decide to dictate social policies from the bench. i don't think that is where it belongs. where these important social

issues belong is in the hands of voters. >> she opposes proposition 19, november proposal to legalize and tax marijuana in california. she thinks it should be regulated as medicine. >> i think it is on the ballot because the state of california wants more revenue. this is all about taxing something else. >> she opposes abortion but wouldn't commit to turning over reversos wade. >> clearly people feel strongly about it and disagree about it is not the central issue in this campaign. the central issue is the issue on voters minds. what about their jobs. >> she apro east side california's attempts to solve global warming reducing green house gas emissions. >> even the scientists that believe that green house gas emissions are caused by human activity will say, no state acting alone will make any difference. so it is a bad deal for the

valley. today the flow is more northerly, that will clear out those coastal clouds and fog and warm up, a little bit more than we did yesterday. so if yesterday was too warm get ready for a little bit warmer today. low 90s from the warmest spots in south bay, morgan hill, 80s san jose, santa clara, 60s along the coast plenty of upper 70s for the peninsula. east bay that is where you will find the warmest locations upper 90s places like brent wood, antioch and try valley low 90s. 70s along the bay, alameda, berkeley. warmer than yesterday. for the north bay, wine country topping out upper 80s near 90 degrees. fairfield, 90 maybe above. 70 in the city and you will see sunshine by the end of the day in san francisco. not one of those june gloom days even though it is july. i can't use that all yearlong. a look at the seven-day forecast. umer 90s then we start to cool
