[ laughter ] >> well, if you are traveling through hayward we have a bit of a bump in the road. we have an accident southbound 880 at tennyson. one lane is blocked due to a two-car crash. chp is on scene. as you travel closer to the coliseum and up into downtown oakland that looks great. we have live camera at the 66th street exit. and top speeds all the way towards the macarthur maze as you can see there. 15 minutes is your drive time from 238 to i-80 and across the golden gate bridge, wow, friday light traffic. you can see a couple of

headlights coming down but no big delays through marin county this morning. that is your traffic. for your forecast, here's tracy. >> hey, thanks, elizabeth. boy, a scorcher yesterday in parts of the bay area. today, more hot weather. that's in the forecast today as well as the weekend. morning commute though, well inland a few clouds and mild. temperatures a lot like yesterday upper 50s to the low 60s. sunrise at 6:00. for the bay, the fog, yeah, back in play this morning. low clouds return patchy fog and even some areas of fog along the coastline. what about your high temperatures? how about the triple digits? 100 in fairfield and livermore. 99 in concord. 90 in san jose. mid-70s in oakland. cooling down ever so slightly in san francisco with 69. lower 90s in vallejo and san rafael. the weekend temperatures will drop off a tad but still hot well inland and we'll see a much bigger cooldown coming in at least for the bay. that will be coming in tuesday,

wednesday and thursday. but it's going to be hot, hot, hot. summertime sizzle. >> we like that. back to you guys. thank you. it's 5:02. silicon valley hit by a series of business burglaries. let's go to anne makovec in palo alto, where police are investigating not one but several break-ins. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. six or seven since february. what appears to be happening is the burglar is targeting local office buildings smashing through windows and grabbing whatever they can of value, mainly things they saw from the window before at the broke windows, things like laptops and small television monitors. here's a map of where this has been going on since february. it is along the east bay shore corridor on and near embarcadero road just east of highway 101 and then south to san antonio road. so that area of palo alto.

but this has also been going on in neighboring cities. so what police are telling businesses right now is to hide everything away from windows. they might want to improve lighting and even hire private security guards has police investigate. the mercury news is reporting that they also have some blood evidence from one of the crime scenes and they are trying to match that up and find the suspect. they believe it is probably one person doing all of these crimes. sydnie? >> anne, thank you very much. anne makovec in palo alto. two teenaged brothers are in the hospital this morning. they were shot at a house party in the east bay at about 12:30 this morning in brentwood. several teenagers were at a party when a group of young men drove up. witnesses say words were exchanged outside the house and when the small group is leaving, one of them turned and opened fire. an 18-year-old shot in the back, his 16-year-old brother wounded in the leg.

so far, so good for the first time in three months oil has stopped leaking into the gulf of mexico. a 75-ton containment cap so far the broken well on the gulf floor. tara mergener shows us why the next 48 hours are critical. reporter: bp's latest fix appears to be doing its job at least for now. >> i think everyone feels like we have begun to turn a corner. >> reporter: for the first time thursday, the company managed to block the flow of oil with a new tighter fitting cap. it's what gulf coast residents have been waiting nearly three months for. >> at least part of the problem is over. >> reporter: but no one is celebrating just yet. engineers must closely monitor the pressure build-up to make sure the well stays intact and no new leaks erupt. >> once we're convinced it can withstand the pressure after that 48 hours, we can certainly consider shutting the well. >> reporter: president obama is cautiously optimistic. he called thursday's progress a

positive sign but warns the cap is still in its testing phase. the next two days will be critical. there's a possibility oil pours down into the bedrock and could rupture the sea floor or the pressure build-up could cause another explosion. even if the test results are good, bp hasn't ruled out releasing some oil again as a precautionary measure. the company calls the containment cap a temporary fix at best while it finishes drilling two relief wells. >> that activity will continue until this well no longer has the capability to ever flow again. >> reporter: but even when the gusher is plugged for good, experts warn oil could continue washing ashore for months to come. in washington, tara mergener, cbs 5. it's 5:05. oakland police offering up $1,000 for help in finding the looters who trashed downtown oakland last week. the department's released 15 photos of people they would like to identify. they show rioters looting a

foot locker, beauty store and a sears on broadway following the verdict in the killing of oscar grant. >> we need the public to come forward to give us their names so we can follow up and arrest them, to show and send a message out that this is not a playground for criminals to come in and loot and steal items in the city of oakland. dozens of businesses in downtown oakland damaged last thursday night. 78 people were arrested. nine people are charged so far with felonies. we have a link to all the pictures as well as the opd tip line on our website, cbs5.com. there is now a lawsuit in connection with a murder of vallejo city councilman matt garcia. garcia's mother has filed a $16 million wrongful death suit against the two men convicted in the killing. the councilman was just 22 years old when he was shot and killed in 2008. he was mistaken for a drug dealer who owed the other two

men money. the suit also names the alleged getaway driver who was never charged. san jose arson investigators are now confirming that the fire at trace elementary school was set by someone. the fire department has is not releasing details about how or exactly where the fire was started. but investigators say they reached the conclusion after reviewing evidence, talking to neighbors and ruling out any accidental causes. the july 5 fire destroyed the school's main building. it was contained to 16 classrooms, library and several offices. classes will resume as scheduled next month, with many to be held in portable classrooms. the coast guard says a body that washed ashore in marin county is probably the third of four fishermen who died when their boat capsized wednesday near point reyes. at the time, rescue crews recovered two other men, but both were unconscious and later died. another man remains missing and

is presumed dead. the four were life-long friends from the central valley on their annual fishing trip. some small earthquakes in the news this morning. two quakes magnitudes 4.0 and 3.9 shaking the geysers area of sonoma county yesterday and this morning a rare earthquake waking up people in the washington, d.c. area. it was 3.6 centered between germantown and gaithersburg, maryland. none of those gates cause in his significant problems. it's 5:08. a blow to one silicon valley community. we'll tell you why a tech giant is closing up shop there. apple gets ready to discuss problems with its new iphone. we'll tell you how they could have been prevented months ago. and new choices for teenaged girls at one popular clothing store. why some parents are appalled. ,,

good morning. much better news now for this earlier accident in hayward. southbound 880 at tennyson all lanes open. much more on your friday morning commute is coming up. this morning, apple will hold a news conference to talk about the new iphone 4. customers are complaining when they hold the phone a certain way, calls are dropped, according to the "wall street journal" apple engineers knew about the risks associated with the phone's antenna as early as a year ago but ceo steve jobs apparently liked the design so much that apple went ahead with development. apple will talk about the problem at 10:00 this morning. >> on this issue, they have been really dismissive denying there was a problem. and they are the kind of

company that almost never responds to complaints about hardware flaws so the fact that they are holding a press conference at all is a very big deal. >> the "wall street journal" reporting apple has no plans to recall the phone but insiders do expect the company to announce some kind of a fix, possibly a bumper that can be placed around the phone which i'm sure they will gladly sell you -- no, i'm sure they will probably give it away. >> i don't know. >> maybe not. we give some more insight coming up at 6:00. cnet editor at large brian cooley will join us. if you work for hewlett- packard in cupertino, your job will be moving to palo alto. the computer giant says it will close its cupertino campus over the next two years. thousands of workers will be transferred to hp's palo alto headquarters. the mercury news reports that hp facilities in both cities are about 60% occupied now. the company hopes to reach 90% in palo alto after that move. the golden state warriors have a new owner and surprise,

pretty cool this morning, 50s at the coast. coastal for the morning, morning commute shallow fog temperatures anywhere from the lower to the upper 50s. around the bay, the fog has returned. low clouds return patchy fog, temperatures anywhere from the mid-50s to near 60 degrees. and once you work your way farther inland, just a few clouds mild temperatures and let's not forget your sunrise at 6:00. here's a look at our trueview. it is based on model data. it gives us a good idea of what's going to be happening with the fog. take a look well inland this morning, and you see around midday today start to clear out especially in concord and santa rosa. but we are going to keep the fog along the coast today. a little more than what you had yesterday, and that's going to be holding down temperatures just a bit. yesterday we saw a number of locations like half moon bay in the 70s. today we are still expecting the lower 70s but just not -- you do run the chance of running into more clouds today.

warnings in southern california near hemet in riverside county one of several brush fires that are burning. firefighters are making headway. the area is in the middle of a heat wave dealing with triple- digit temperatures. investigators believe this particular fire was caused by lightning. right now, the fire is about 80% contained. at least 80 people had to be evacuated for a time. in the headlines, a series of business burglaries under investigation in palo alto. this is live picture of one of those businesses. there have been at least half a dozen cases since february. the burglars apparently break windows at the business and then grab whatever electronics they could find nearby. a shooting outside a house party in the east bay puts two brothers in the hospital this morning. those victims just 16 and 18 years old. they were shot in brentwood by someone in a group that had words with people at a party. and the owner of five horses found dead near tracy

could face criminal charges. investigators say the animals had been left for three or four days without water. the surviving animals are being treated for severe dehydration. watch out if you have a bag of lettuce in your fridge. some of it's being recalled because it can make you sick. salinas-based fresh express says hundreds of thousands of bags may be tainted with e. coli. the recall involves fresh express romaine salads. those bags had use by dates of july 8 through the 12th. and an s in the product code. so far now, no illnesses have been reported. it is 5:21. a new arrival at a popular teen clothing store. >> i get it. a new arrival. here's elizabeth wenger with a look at tr good morning. friday the 16th of july. let's get you up and out the door. elizabeth, how is traffic looking? >> it's not too bad in the east bay. a look in walnut creek near the 24/680 interchange. we have a live camera right there. those taillights look fine toward danville. one sensor there is 77 miles per hour. down towards san jose it's quiet out of downtown san jose. looks like we are seeing a little bit of slowing on our sensors there on southbound 101 heading towards morgan hill so we'll check that out see what's going on there see if it's anything or maybe our sense yours updating.

by burglars in silicon valley. anne makovec took the trip to palo alto this morning where police are investigating. >> reporter: good morning. i'm here along old bayshore road in palo alto. it's not an area would you expect to be crime-ridden but this office building is one of six or seven buildings hit since february. burglars are apparently braking windows and grabbing whatever they can very quickly. laptops, small flat screen televisions, and now police are warning businesses to make sure they don't have anything that might lead to temptation sitting in windows. let's take a look at exactly where this has been happening. here are the maps. it says that it's been happening along the east bay shore corridor on or near embarcadero road just east of highway 101 and then south to san antonio road. so again, police are telling businesses to hide their valuables, improve their lighting, surveillance, even hire private security as they

continue to investigate this. they believe it is one suspect doing all of these burglaries and they do apparently according to the "san jose mercury news" have blood evidence from one of the scenes so they are now trying to match that up and solve these crimes. john? >> anne, thank you very much. anne makovec in palo alto this morning. oil has stopped pouring out of broken well in the gulf of mexico. bp has a new cap in place over the leak. it is now testing the system to find out if oil is leaking anywhere else in the well. they have stopped drilling two relief wells during that testing. but the relief wells are still considered the long-term solution. >> that activity will continue until this well no longer has the capability to ever flow again. >> once we're convinced it can withstand the pressure after that 48 hours, we can consider shutting the well. >> bp hasn't ruled out releasing some oil from the well to avoid too much pressure

building up. two teenaged brothers are in the hospital this morning after they were shot at a house party in the east bay at 12:30 a.m. in brentwood this morning. several teens were at a party when a group of men drove up. witnesses say words were exchanged outside the house. when the small group was leaving, one of them turned and opened fire. an 18-year-old was shot in the back, his 16-year-old brother wounded in the leg. more than 80 firefighters have filed a federal labor lawsuit against the menlo park fire protection district. the suit contends they should get overtime for time they spend on work related tasks before their shifts begin. those tasks include going to other fire stations to pick up uniforms and other equipment. the chief told the daily news that he is disappointed saying before now, only one employee had made an issue of this. san jose arson investigators now confirm that someone set the fire at trace

while. gordon just lost his job. >> you know what, honestly, i don't think it's hit me yet. probably will hit me tomorrow when i instinctively get up to go to work and realize that i am no longer employed as an oakland police officer. >> reporter: this intersection high and international used to be part of his beat. now he doesn't know if he will ever patrol these oakland streets again. >> here you go. >> have a seat. and i'll be right back. >> okay, thank you. appreciate it. >> reporter: on his first day of unemployment, gordon is applying for a new job in east palo alto. >> i'm very eager to find another job. >> reporter: he is the first in his family to become a cop having grown up in oakland. being hired there was a good fit. after two years in patrol, he is going through a wide range of emotions. >> there is no need to be angry at anybody. decisions were made and i will adjust. sad because i'm leaving friends and coworkers that i have enjoyed working with and a

department that i love and care about and the citizens that i truly love and care about. >> reporter: but oakland's loss may be another city's gain. east palo alto, for instance, has two openings. >> a good experienced officer who knows how to do street enforcement and know how to write reports and know how to deal with 415 family disturbances things like that will be a great benefit for any department. >> reporter: gordon still cares about oakland and says he won't make any rash decisions about a new job. on the other hand, he is in a bad situation and he is moving forward. sherry hu, cbs 5. a shake-up in the nation's capital this morning. but it had nothing to do with politics. a rare earthquake woke people up in the d.c. area. it was 3.6 centered between germ nan town and gaithersburg, maryland. and here in california two quakes 4.0 and 3.9 shaking the guys, area of sonoma county yesterday. none of the quakes caused any

spend on work-related tasks before their shifts begin. those tasks include going to other fire stations to pick up uniforms and other equipment. they are being called the toughest restrictions on the u.s. financial industry since the great depression. now it is up to president obama to sign a financial reform measure into law. yesterday the senate passed the bill. the plan would give the government new powers to break up companies that threaten the economy. and it also aims to give consumers more protection in their financial transactions. the president is expected to sign it as early as wednesday. hewlett-packard is closing its campus in cupertino. the computer giant says that will happen over the next two years. thousands of workers will be transferred to hp's palo alto headquarters. the mercury news reports hp facilities in both cities are about 60% occupied right now. that company hopes to reach 90% in palo alto after the move. this morning, apple will

hold a news conference to talk about the new iphone 4. customers have been complaining that when told this the phone a certain way, calls are dropped. according to the "wall street journal," apple engineers knew about risks associated with the phone's antenna as early as a year ago. but the newspaper reports the ceo steve jobs apparently liked the design so much that apple went ahead with development. apple will talk about the problem at 10:00 this morning. >> they have been really dismissive, denied that there was a problem and they are the kind of company that almost never responds to complaints about hardware flaws so the fact that they are holding' press conference at all is a very big deal. the "wall street journal" reports apple has no plans to, the phone but insiders do expect the company to announce some kind of fix, possibly a bumper that can be placed around the phone. cnet editor at large brian cooley will be joining us at 6:25 with more insight on this story. dog owners, you know to

happening to my dog. >> reporter: as little as one piece of gum per 10 pounds of dog can cause a fatal drop in blood sugar or hype glycemia. >> the manifestations of hypoglycemia are seizures, coma, things like that. >> reporter: a veterinarian at the university of pennsylvania's animal hospital says xylitol can also cause liver failure. >> this is a life-threatening thing and it can be costly. >> reporter: the animal control poison center managed 2600 cases of xylitol ingestion up 40% over three years. no one knows whether the increase is because there are more products with xylitol, more dogs eating them or better awareness. stride's website notes that xylitol, an ingredient often used in sugarless gum, toxic for dogs. in a statement, stride's makers, kraft foods, said they applauded the efforts to get

the bay. for the bay yesterday, we had clear skies, we started to warm up very early in the morning and that led us to temperatures in the 70s across much of the bay. this morning, a few clouds and mild inland, low clouds returning with fog around the bay. and fog along the coastline. high temperatures today i'm stressing it because it's worth talking about. 100 in morgan hill. 83 mountain view. coastline 60s. but again another day with temperatures expected triple digits. 100 in brentwood and livermore and pleasanton. 99 in danville. 98 in san ramon. go to the bay!! get closer to the bay you cool down with the lower to mid-70s in berkeley, oakland and alameda. 69 san francisco. 90s from napa to santa rosa to sonoma. the weekend, will it be as hot? saturday the hotter of the two days. slight cooldown for sunday and then things continue to cool down ever so slightly monday through thursday. but yeah, another hot day
