morning to you. on this friday, i'm marcus washington and i'm chris sanchez. we have lots of news for you. first, we start with breaking news in san francisco, where firefighters continue to battle a large fire in presidio heights. the flames fully engulfed a four story building near clan lyon. and it started just more than an hour ago. there is lots of scaffolding outside the building, and firefighters tell us that the building was being painted. so far, no word about anyone inside the building, but a fire captain just told us within the last hour that the two buildings next door on either side are evacuated. people are now outside of those buildings. firefighters also managed to keep the flames from spreading to those other buildings. we do know though, there is a lot of smoke coming off of this fire and some folks as far away as the tenderloin say that they are smelling it. ginger conejero saab is almost at the scene. once she is there

that potential plan was put forth by egyptian mediators, who are in the country today to talk about what's on the table. 40 hostages were originally part of the proposed bill that would include people from the humanitarian cattegat three. that includes women, children, the elderly and anyone suffering with severe medical conditions. however hamas indicated it may not have 40 hostages fitting that criteria. so that was narrowed down to 33. us secretary of state antony blinken is in china this morning. he's wrapping up a three day trip after meeting with the country's president, xi jinping. this is new video of blinken's meeting with china's foreign and public secretary. ministers now talks between the two countries have increased in recent months, even as geopolitical differences are growing. a primary goal of blinken's visit is to warn china about its support for russia's war against ukraine. now that conflict began, weeks after moscow and beijing declared a no

is not a friend i know who is not heard me tell this because i'm so excited. it's a problem in space. i never thought about it before. when astronomers find something new, like a crater, they get to name it. but the rules set down by the international astronomical union say they have to. generally speaking, name it after a famous scientist or artist, and that person has to have been dead for a certain number of years. now, when you think dead scientists from years ago, that's a man. which is why 95% of the features on the moon are named after men. now here's a young astronomer trying to change that. i mean, because, men kind of came there as a first come, first served, it does mean that we have this de facto male occupation of space, but space science is evolving at such an incredible rate that new discoveries are constantly being made. now, that's astronomer annie lennox talking to me from scotland, leading the change to get things named after women. she herself
6:18 am
discovered new craters on mercury, and she struggled to get the iau to accept any of the women's names that she wanted to use. but they did finally relent . i have had some craters names, yes, so that first one that prompted this whole project, i ended up calling the nairn crater after a scottish, poet and singer called lady catalina nairn, who was a contemporary, actually, of robert burns. now she's a really interesting woman in her lifetime, it wasn't, considered proper for a lady to be a poet. so many of her poems were wrongly attributed to robert burns. and it wasn't really until after her death that she got proper recognition, recognitions, the incredible irony that she twice faced so much sexism. so this is the nereid crater. it's on mercury that that lennox discovered. i will talk to astronomer annie lennox on our program sunday morning on press here. it's she has gone and she is trying to

in the afternoon. those winds are at 31mph and could be even stronger for san francisco and some of our coastal areas as well as the hills. but eventually the wind starts to calm down. tonight and our models still showing that we may see those clouds dropping some light rain at any point today. parts of the east bay could see some of the higher amounts of rainfall, with some of our models showing up to a 10th of an inch of rain. unfortunately, this is not enough to really help us from turning on the sprinklers or watering the lawns and our gardens, where some areas may not see much rain at all. so here's a look at a drier 7-day forecast. after today, with our temperatures warming up into the mid to upper 70s and our temperatures peak on tuesday up to about 79 degrees, while san francisco will continue to see temperatures in the 60s here. and mike, you saw a few drops on that fremont camera. we had carrie. but as you talk about the wind kind of coming through, look at the flags flapping here so quickly dried

that's been on fire all morning long, that is, for the most part, contained the bulk of that. they are still working on hot spots and the voids of the building to make sure that those don't turn into something that's more of more concern. but the first calls for this fire came in before 430. justin. justin shaw tells us that, you know, crews were on scene in less than four minutes, but already they were presented with a unique set of challenges, as firefighters are for pretty much every day that they're on work. captain shaw is here to talk to us about more of those unique challenges that had to do with the weather and the work that is actually being done on the building. captain shaw, talk to us about that. so fire crews first arrived. they initially saw fire on all four floors. of this four story, six unit residential building, they very quickly activated a second alarm, which sends twice as many firefighters to the scene. they knew they were going to have challenges. one of those being the early

morning wind that we had coming over the hill. we're just south of the presidio. smoke was down all the way to the street level. visibility was almost zero at some points. we also had a spitting mist, almost a rain, which makes all of our tools and equipment slippery. but our firefighters were able to quickly get to work and hold this fire to the building of origin, and we see the scaffolding that's wrapped around the building. i know you were telling me earlier that presented a unique challenge to getting the fire to behave the way it usually does when the scaffolding is wrapped, to protect things from falling down to the ground. it also creates different wind events around the fire. initially. one of our other concerns is it prevents our firefighters from being able to enter upper floor windows using our ladders, and complete a search for any occupants at the time. however, our firefighters are very well trained to adapt and we were able to apply water via our ladder pipe operations and knock down the bulk of the fire very quickly. all right, and quickly, captain shaw, we just received word from the owner of the building. there were no

6:36 am
about. we are talking about a nine mile stretch of southbound 680 starting at the dublin interchange, all the way south to highway 84. as i mentioned, the onramps for southbound stoneridge drive, bernal avenue and sunol boulevard will be closed as well. again, the closure, scheduled to start tonight at nine for the entire weekend, reopening at 4 a.m. monday morning and time for the morning commute perhaps will be a little bit earlier, but that is what their their end time is, according to caltrans, in this video, you might be able to see why this part of southbound 680 needs work. there are potholes, parts of the road that are uneven and just overall deteriorated. originally, this was scheduled for a couple of weekends ago, but was delayed because of the rain. caltrans says this repavement is an entire year ahead of schedule. if caltrans did not shut down the road for this weekend, this work would require roughly 40 nighttime closures. we're removing deteriorated pavement, and we're going to replace it

with concrete, which is a durable material that will give us a smooth ride for decades. so that's the good news. we're all familiar with those potholes, i know everybody who drives that stretch is familiar with the condition of the road. so it will definitely be a smooth ride on monday. so again, southbound 680 between 580 and 84 will be shut down starting tonight at 9:00. will be closed through the entire weekend. the idea is to have this open by 4 a.m. monday morning. this does not impact the northbound direction, so northbound 680 will be normal. southbound is the issue caltrans is asking you to avoid southbound 680 during the weekend. reporting live here in pleasanton, bob redell today in the bay. good information. thanks, bob. all right. well, as you know, the saying it gets worse before it gets better, but mike's going to get you around so that this detour only costs you a couple minutes maybe. mike. that's right. and they're saving. they say we're a year ahead of schedule. they are

this morning in new york city. this is after spending the day upstate. he'll actually campaign in queens today. oh, scott mcgrew another former president waking up in the big apple as well. it's a big city. so yeah, donald trump, who goes back to court today. he's going to hear more from his former friend, the publisher of the national enquirer. we'll get to that one in a second. as for biden, he was up in syracuse, new york, to announce billions of dollars in grants for chipmaker micron technologies to build a massive new chip fab there. it's paid for through the bipartisan chip bill. at least 9000 of which are construction jobs, 11,000 manufacturing jobs, tens of thousands more up and down the supply chain. and it includes 9000 permanent micron manufacturing jobs. former president trump, meanwhile, first criminal trial continues

today. more cross-examination of the national enquirer's david pecker yesterday, pecker said his newspaper paid to catch and kill karen mcdougal's story about an affair with trump. but trump never paid him back. so when the second woman, stormy daniels, came forward with her story, pecker wouldn't put up more money, he said. and that's how trump's lawyer ended up paying. prosecutors say it was the repaid payment to michael cohen, where the business records were forged. now, trump acknowledges the payments but says there were no affairs. there were also trump lawyers in the supreme court yesterday arguing the presidents should be immune from criminal charges. the same questions that came up in lower courts came up again. could a president order the assassination of a political opponent? could he sell nuclear secrets to a foreign country? yes, in certain cases, said trump's lawyer, john sauer, because his legal theory is set up in such a way he really can't answer otherwise. just in, kagan

pointed out that the whole point of the american revolution was a fight between americans who wrote down that it was self-evident that all men were created equal, and a king who thought he was above the law, justice jackson said. a president who could do anything would be dangerous if someone with those kinds of powers, the most powerful person in the world, with the greatest amount of authority, he could go into office knowing that there would be no potential penalty for committing crimes. i'm trying to understand what the difference incentive is from turning the oval office into the, you know, the seat of criminal activity in this country. defense secretary austin will pay announce rather the purchase plan for new weapons to ukraine today, including patriot batteries and other weapons that will be built here in america. there are two types of weapons that go to ukraine. one comes from

drawdown. these are the weapons that can be loaded onto planes immediately because they come from our warehouses in many cases, their weapons we don't use anymore, like cluster munitions pictured here. the others are manufactured specifically for shipment to ukraine. and that's what austin's going to talk about today. but either way, the new weapons or the replacements for the weapons we already have are almost entirely built in america. so when we say we're setting aside money for ukraine, chris, really, most of it is spent here. that is always a good point. i like when you bring that up. thank you scott. so nbc bay area is helping to mark infertility awareness week. and after a long journey battling infertility, we have a storybook ending for one mother and the surrogate who helped her fulfill her dreams. jennifer wagner replied to an instagram story about a woman seeking help with her infertility issues, and jen messaged kate durkin. even though they lived on opposite coast, they met up in new york and kate said she was hopeful but knew all too well how

5740 this morning. i want to welcome you back as we move you forward with a look at our top stories here, starting with that breaking news out of san francisco. this is where firefighters are still monitoring that massive early morning fire that tore through an apartment building. here's a live look for you at the scene. this is at clay and lynn in presidio heights. now, you can see right there that the flames are out from what we can see. but there was a time those flames engulfed that four story building. this is a residential building. we are hearing that it was vacant at the time of the fire. there are no injuries, but that fire was a scary morning for our neighbors here. so that fire did trigger some evacuations in the nearby buildings surrounding it. it
6:59 am
started around 440 this morning. and right here, this is what those flames look like this morning as firefighters were battling it. now firefighters do tell us that it was being painted and that's why you saw the scaffolding outside of the building. we also know that smoke from that fire spread to neighborhoods well across the bay area, as far away as the tenderloin. so far, it is still too soon to know what started the fire. 658 right now, and let's take a live look at the east bay and southbound interstate 680, which will look very different this weekend. caltrans is going to shut down the southbound stretch between 580 and highway 84 for repaving. this is a nine mile stretch of southbound lanes and the on ramps for southbound stone ridge drive. bernal avenue sunol boulevard will all be closed as well. this happens at 9:00 tonight. it is expected to reopen early monday morning in time for the morning commute. at least that's what mike's crossing his fingers for. he usually open a few hours early. yeah, it's nice to see when those projects go ahead of

schedule, and sometimes weather is a factor. this one. not not this weekend. hopefully it actually gets repaved. okay, that's part of your route i know. yeah. so we're going to see temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s for the weekend. actually it won't get repaved. it's going to get resurfaced. so instead of pavement there will be concrete. so that should be better. but we'll see. there's your alternate to southbound 680. and remember we still have that closure for westbound 37 as well. your alternate in orange up and over. so carrie is going to be even smoother than usual. absolutely the today show is just ahead. we are continuing today in the bay on roku and other platforms starting at 9 or 8. i should say a pay gap for women in technology. we're talking about that. plus, scott mcgrew breaks down all the business and tech for the day. donald trump's fate before the highest court in the land. >> with a question for the ages. can he or any president be prosecuted for their actions? it's april 26th.
