right now at 11:00, we continue to follow our breaking news in southern california. some calm and quiet right now at usc after a lot of clashes on campus. police just confirming now that 93 people have been arrested at that pro-palestinian protest. this is video from our nbc chopper of police loading those protesters into those white vans and taking them to the county jail. protesters had set up an encampment at usc this morning. they were asked to leave later in the day. when they ignored warnings from police, the officers moved in and then things got a bit rowdy. we saw demonstrators throwing objects and water at officers. they also moved on to the streets, blocking cars. the usc campus is now closed. only on to students and staff. here at home, a peaceful protest continues at uc berkeley for the third straight night students and pro-palestinian supporters are camping out on the plaza.

like the demonstrators at usc, the students at cal are demanding the university sever all ties with israeli institutions and to divest financially from companies supporting israel. uc berkeley officials say they're committed to free speech but have no plans to change their investment practices. also tonight we are getting a first glimpse of an american israeli hostage with bay area ties held in captivity. an undated video was released by hamas today of 23-year-old hersh goldberg-polin. he was burn in berkeley but later moved with his family to israel. >> he was abducted at that music festival last october. the question now, is he still alive? jocelyn moran joins us with the details. >> for his family, sit the first time they're hearing his voice in more than six months. >> reporter: an undated video

was released by hamas today. in it, hersh goldberg-polin identifies himself. it's the first glimpse of hill in captivity. this video shows him being kidnapped from the super nova music festival in october. today's video shows the 23-year-old's hand is gone. speaking to the camera in hebrew, hersh asks the israeli government to bring home the hostages. he's also thinking of his family. mom, dad, libi, and orly, i love you and miss you so much and think of you every day i'm here, he says. his parents are calling on israel and hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement. >> we're relieved to see him alive, but we are also concerned about his health and well being. >> we heard your voice today for the first time in 201 day, and if you can hear us, i am telling you, we are telling you, we love you, stay strong, survive. >> reporter: hersh has ties to the bay area. he was born in berkeley.

people like rabbi mark bloom know the family. when i was on sabbatical last summer, i think the last shabbat dinner we had, this was in july, well before october 7th, we had shabbat dinner with his parents. he was very much on my mind. >> reporter: while there's hope, there's also concern. >> this is relief he's alive but great concern because you can tell it's a propaganda video. >> reporter: hersh is one of five americans believed to be alive in hamas captivity. israel says 133 hostages are still in gaza, at least 36 of whom are confirmed dead. it's been more than six months of war, according to the gaza health ministry, more than 34,000 palestinians have been killed. jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. >> jocelyn, thank you. two days after cecil williams passed away a special rehearsal tonight for what some are calling his pride and joy. historic churches ensemble.

nbc bay area's gia vang is in san francisco tonight with how new and old members are getting ready for the first sunday service without the longtime leader. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: in the pews of tenderloin's glide memorial church, belting songs they know by heart is dorian leslie. >> we all know why we're here, because he made this space available for all of us. and i could not be more thankful. >> reporter: he is glide church cofounder reverend cecil williams. the 94-year-old known as a champion of racial equality, lgbtq right, and the poor passed away peacefully on monday. dorian knew him well as a once 15-year member of the congregation. >> cecil chose myself and my friend dawn to help coach here the choir. being able to meet with cecil on

the sunday after his death. >> i will have memories of many times of him sitting in his seat over on the side staring across at the musicians. >> reporter: honoring the pastor and what he built in song. in san francisco, gia vang, nbc bay area news. >> they sound beautiful. a warning from police after an armed robbery on the uc berkeley campus tonight. the robbery happened in a parking lot near the greek theater during the willie nelson concert. police say the suspects are still on the loose. no word of any injuries. a scare on another campus. san jose city college will re-open tomorrow morning. the college was evacuated tonight because of a report of a bomb threat. classes for canceled and people were told to avoid the area as police searched the campus. late tonight though police are noting nothing suspicious was

located. new tonight, antioch unified superintendent says she is taking official action on employee bullying complaints and that she is removing herself from the process. this comes after our investigative unit reported on complaints against her director of facilities, ken turnage. employees say turnage's bad behavior includes putting a worker's desk on a roof and that he's managed to get away with it because he's good friends with school superintendent stephanie anello and her husband. turnage, anello, and her husband have not responded to any of our questions. meanwhile, in an email to board members today, superintendent anello said she's now initiated two investigations, one on the overall situation and the other looking at specific concerns reported by nbc bay area last week. anello also says she has voluntarily removed herself from the investigative proceedings. but two board members questioned if the investigations will really be independent given that

some of the complaints are against the superintendent herself. we have asked the district multiple times who will be conducting those investigations, and we have yet to receive an answer. a special board meeting has been called for tomorrow night to discuss possible disciplinary action against the superintendent. and our investigative reporter candace has been leading our coverage on this. to catch up on all of her reporting on antioch unified school district, just go to nbcbayarea.com/investigations. a taco truck is targeted by thieves in east san jose. it happened last wednesday around 4:00 a.m. you can see it here. surveillance video shows two guys looking under the tents at a food truck plaza. and a few minutes later, they leave with the generator. the owner of tacos el plebe say they were the only truck that was robbed that night. >> they broke into the generator's box, so they were able to steal the generator. >> you guys had it in locks, right? >> yes, they were able to break

that lock. they broke into it and took the generator. >> the generate ser worth more than 1,000 bucks. they believe one of the suspects was spotted eating at that blah sa just a few days before the theft. a father remains in critical condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in san francisco over to weekend. happened early sunday morning at debose avenue and guerrero street. the family of jesus sumudio says he was riding his electric scooter to his job at bob's donuts when he was hit. the driver of the vehicle left before police arrived. he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the owners of bob's donuts say he's the sole provider for his family and they're praying for his recovery. >> he always had a good attitude, regardless of whatever was going on behind the scene, he was always coming in with a good attitude. i can't lie. i always appreciated it for him because sometimes i was having a bad day, and it was as simple as

him asking me if i'm all right, put a smile on my face and really changed my mood. >> a gofundme page has been set up to pay for his medical bills. at last check it's raided more than $28,000. well, she's making headlines again. the great-grandmother in west oakland who chased down a robbery suspect is running for city council. this is 77-year-old fay taylor who goes my miss fay. you may remember the viral video from a couple years ago. miss fay spotted an older woman getting dragged for her purse outside of her west oakland home. miss fay came running out, you see her there, yelling and throwing her cane at the would-be thief, who took off. it's crimes like that that prompted miss fay to run for the district three seat currently held by carol fife, born and raised in oakland, she tried running in 2020 but says she stopped because covid stopped her from campaigning. well, there is a new push to allow arizona doctors perform

abortion procedures right here in california. governor newsom and california lawmakers proposed a bold plan today to counter arizona's strict abortion ban. now, if the legislation is passed, medical professionals from arizona and their patients could come here to perform procedures. right now arizona lawmakers are debating on whether to uphold that strict abortion ban that dates back to 1864. it bans the procedure with virtually no exceptions. >> we proudly take on this fight. we will not abandon our sisters or their health care professionals in arizona or in any other state. >> this is part of a larger campaign by governor newsom to protect abortion rights. earlier this week his campaign started running ads in alabama, blasting a bill this in that state that would make ate crime for people to travel to another state for an abortion. an about face from all state

insurance, the company who stopped writing new homeowners policies in california two years ago says it may start rewriting those policies on one condition. it wants the department of insurance to allow them to use catastrophic modelling when requesting rate increases for homeowners. catastrophic models are computerized reports that simulate potential catastrophic events. those in turn could be used to justify rate increases. in a statement, all state says, one home insurance -- once home insurance rates fully reflect the cost of providing protection to consumer, we'll be able to offer home insurance policies to more californians with timely rate approvals, the use of our advanced wildfire modelling, and reinsurance costs. we're back in of seconds. up next, still seeking justice for alexis gabe. the new documentary and what her family wants you to know about the man who killed her. also, we showed you this video previously. tonight a bay area bride has

new at 11:00, two years after a contra costa county woman was killed by her ex-boyfriend a new documentary is shining light on the murder case of alexis gabe. her family hopes it'll help them present a new case against a specific individual they believe is connected to the murder of their daughter. nbc's pete was there for tonight's screening. >> with smelled large amounts of bleach. >> it's painful because that's the last thing -- it's the last

-- my daughter is is inside the house, especially the bathroom. >> reporter: the gabe family sharing their thoughts on a documentary that aired tonight examining the murder case of their daughter. the oakland native went missing in january of 2022 leading to a communitywide missing person search. months later it became a homicide case connected to her ex-boyfriend marshall curtis jones, shot and killed by law enforcement attempting to arrest him in washington state. >> justice has not been served. >> reporter: during a private screening, investigators on the case watched the documentary. >> i'm hoping the truth will be seen, because a lot of it has been brushed under the rug because it still is under investigation. >> reporter: which discussed many parts of the investigation, including a map showing where jones planned to dump the remains of alexis gabe, and bodycam video of police searching jones' home for evidence, where police believe

gabe was killed. the documentary did not insurveillance video that allegedly shows jones' mother as a potential suspect in the murder case. they felt it was important for public to see. >> i was communicating with the episode producer and i mentioned are you guys going to show that clip, and she said yeah, yeah, we showed that. all of a sudden it's not there. >> reporter: the family plans for their attorney to present a case to the district attorney's office against jones' mother in the coming months. she was briefly taken into custody around the time of her son's death in 2022, but police say there wasn't enough evidence to charge her. the gabe family hopes a new case could lead to a different outcome. >> we're not done. >> we're not done. >> we're definitely not done. >> reporter: in oakland, pete, nbc bay area news. a split second decision that may have saved a life in oakland. a security guard spotted a fire, stopped to help, and ended up pulling a burning man out of that building. it happened at 61st and martin luther king way at around 10:30

morning. a security guard saw the fire in an apartment building, decided to help. he found two men who had already escaped the flames trying to get back in to rescue another friend. the guard used a flashlight to direct the man to a window and then grabbed him. >> he was just screaming. he's like, i cannot see. i cannot -- i don't know where to go. i cannot see. so i can hear he was banging the wall. so my first instinct was to pull him out of the apartment. and when we pull him out of the apartment, he was still on flames, part of his body and his clothes. so i run to my car and get a fire extinguisher. >> all three men were taken to the hospital. two are still hospitalized tonight, one is in critical condition. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. all right, we have a great update and a great reunion. a very happy bride now has her wedding dress back after it was stolen from her front porch.

last week redwood city police released this surveillance video asking for help identifying this package thief. inside that package was the woman's wedding dress. police say thanks to tips the man and address were both found. he was arrest for the grand theft. well, bay area figure skater christie yamaguchi is receiving a special honor. mattel is releasing a barbie inspired by the gold medal winner. the doll wears the same outfit yamaguchi wore for her performance at the 1992 winter olympics. she grew up in fremont, lives in the east bay, and was the first asian american woman to win a gold medal. her barbie will be released in may for aapi month. yamaguchi is calling the doll a huge honor, and she even said that the puffy hair, the pooffy hair was all about her. they got it. how her hair was in the 1990s. that's how we rolled. >> it looks like it can do the exact moves. you can kind of --

>> that would be impressive. >> that's pretty cool, congratulations. our forecast here as we head through tonight we are between two different storm systems here. we have one to the north and then one off towards the south. that's what's bringing in the cloud cover and the cooler temperatures. and we show you more details on how this is going to move here for us as we roll through the next couple of days and details on a few of those showers. all right, we'll start it off right here tomorrow morning. and we will see a mix of the clouds and some sun trying to break through at times. and we'll get the same thing here through the afternoon. some of those high clouds. but by 1:00, we should actually get in on a little bit more sunshine here than we had for today. and i think overall it's going to make it a better day here for us. we're going to get back down here to 53 in the peninsula. south bay at 52. and we'll continue with 50s as well through the east bay, san francisco, and the north bi. daytime highs for tomorrow, we're not going to warm it up at all. cool across the bay area. 67 in santa rosa. 62 in san francisco. 65 in palo alto.

69 in concord and upper 60s san jose to morgan hill. now looking into friday's forecast we'll see this next system drop in. this one's really developing over the land. so there's only a slight chance we could get a few spotty showers. i think the bigger thing with this would be the wind starting to pick up as we head boo friday's forecast. because you see on the shower chance here the better bet would be off to the north and also the east of us. so a spotty chance of some showers on friday. heading up to the sierra we'll see about one to three inches of snow at the higher elevations. the winds though, i do think by tomorrow afternoon it'll start to pick up 15 to 30 miles per hour. but when we do think those wind gusts would be the strongest, it's friday afternoon and early evening. anywhere from 20 to about 50 miles per hour through those higher elevations, especially across the mountains of the peninsula and right here at the coast it looks real gusty here for us. now, we are expecting the wind to calm down through this weekend. we'll get sunny skies in here, and temperatures are going to be comfortable.
