next on "nbc bay area news tonight," california is getting hit with some late-season storms, and our jeff ranieri is tracking the timeline. and more snow falling in the sierra right now. we'll take you live to tahoe. then hundreds of new cameras are coming to the east bay. where they're going and how they'll help fight crime. plus, students under a lot of pressure as college admissions decisions start to roll in. is there anything we can do about the stress? and later, why this headset is now headed to the baseball hall of fame.
7:01 pm
good evening. this is "nbc bay area news tonight." i'm audrey asistio. and we start tonight with our storms. get ready for a rainy weekend ahead. you saw that video. there it is from danville. this was just from a few hours ago the good news is the heavier stuff is starting to move out for now. the rain is far from over, so let's go ahead and bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, what are you seeing on the radar right now? >> well, the center of the storm system we're going to be tracking all weekend long is just offshore. you see the rotation here. that's that center of low pressure. so it's just slowly going to take its time moving down to the southern coastline all the way into saturday and sunday. so we're going to get these bands of rain moving in. now, the heaviest rainfall we
7:02 pm
had this afternoon just made it really hard to travel. that's now pushing into central california. let's put a track on what we're seeing so far for the totals. some of the highest numbers in morgan hill. man, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, you had that heavy, heavy rain from morgan hill to gilroy, three-quarters of an inch. redwood city, 0.47. spotty rain in san jose. we're seeing it pick up through the peninsula. that's going to keep that wet weather in fremont at least through 7:57 tonight. watch out for those roads to get wet again. from danville to walnut creek, another zone moving in over the next 45 minutes and off to the north bay. it's pretty much hit and miss from santa rosa down through novato. as we roll through this weekend and tomorrow, we're going to keep that rain chance with us. some isolated gusts at times, 15 to 35. we'll the possibility of some thunderstorms, even some small hail. sierra snow, we're looking at an
7:03 pm
additional 4 to 8 inches as we head through tomorrow's forecast. 50i6 got a full look of what we can expect on easter morning in about 15 minutes. >> jeff, thank you. we're also tracking more snow in the sierra. what you're looking at here is the conditions along i-80. this is near donner summit. traffic is not moving there right now. it's being held because of spinouts. when it does reopen, chains will be required. our snow guru is standing by. kevin cooper will join us live from the south shore just a few minutes from now. another headline we are watching, a special send-off for a ship named after harvey milk was met with protests. protesters were demonstrating against the israel-hamas war. in the end, several people ended up being detained by police. the protesters showed up at piers 30 and 32 in san francisco. that's where the harvey milk is currently sitting. it's a new fueling and supply
7:04 pm
ship. celebration was happening on board when at least eight demonstrators managed to make their way onto the piers and onto the gangway of the supply ship. we even watched as san francisco police tried to keep them from getting onto the ship itself. organizers of the protest say that they chose this ship because they heard reports that it was headed to the middle east. but according to the ship's crew, that is not the case. the harvey milk is actually on its way to a new home port in virginia, where it's scheduled for trials. they say it won't be entering service for about two years. well, this is something oakland has been pleading for for years now. hundreds of new cameras are headed to the town and to east bay freeways. governor newsom made that announcement today, saying that they'll help boost public safety. this comes as oakland is grappling with a surge in violent crimes and as shootings on our freeways continue to rack up. there have been ten in alameda county so far this year. one of the most recent shootings happened on wednesday. this is on 880 in union city.
7:05 pm
you see right there, a driver pulls up next to that van and shoots that window out. thankfully the van's driver wasn't seriously hurt. chp says this was a road rage incident and that the driver with the gun has since been arrested. all right. so here are the details on the new camera network. 290 cameras will go up across oakland. another 10 will be placed on oakland freew on and off-ramps. and 180 more will be installed in other locations across the east bay. installation starts next month. it's important to note some of these cameras were approved by the oakland mayor and city council last fall and already in the works. city leaders say that this new network will help stop crime. businesses we spoke to today say that this help can't come soon enough. >> the more cameras, i personal believe that can reduce the crime. people will be more aware that now somebody is watching you.
7:06 pm
>> and joining us now is oakland city council member triva reid. she's been pushing for these cameras for a very long time now. thank you so much for joining us. i want to start by asking you how exactly do these cameras work, and how will they help stop crime? >> the cameras are going to be 24/7. they're going to be working all the time, helping us to connect the information that we need to provide the prosecutable evidence that we continue to hear is needed more to address those who are committing these crimes and wreaking havoc in our community. they're going to be position the throughout the city. they're going to be in hot spots that our police chief and our command team have already designated areas. we're going to be working alongside chp to make sure we have this information and a regional crime center approach. there are a number of cities around oakland that have had these cameras, and we're looking to connect our system. >> so it's our understanding that some of these cameras are the same, already approved by
7:07 pm
the council. so how did the state get involved in all of this? >> well, the state provided funding for the cameras we approved in october. these cameras were approved by council. they were approved by a privacy advisory commission. we've been waiting for the deployment of these cameras that have been re-announced just recently. >> mm-hmm. so some people a little skeptical about these cameras. what would you say to people who are worried that these cameras could be an invasion of privacy? >> our privacy advisory commission takes seriously all the matters around safety and security. they have vetted these cameras. they have approved the use policy associated with these cameras. they worked alongside opd to make sure that those concerns that we hear from neighbors are addressed. and i would say that the majority of the neighbors that i hear from, they want to see these cameras on the ground. we know that we're stretched
7:08 pm
with the resources through opd, and our law enforcement partners even around us. so we need to deploy the new technology and tools to help us get the information captured so that we can hold those accountable who are committing the crimes daily. and certainly 24/7, it feels like for many of us throughout the city. >> and we're talking about hundreds of cameras. what's the timeline for these cameras to be fully up and running? >> they could have come yesterday. i mean we are waiting. we have approved these cameras. i know that there's a lot of work taking place right now as the governor has announced just another phase of finalizing our agreement with the state. i'm hoping that in the next 30 days, we can see those cameras operational on the ground. it's going to take some time to get all of them deployed in each of the areas. but i believe we'll be able to have them operationalized soon. there are a number of them on the highways that i believe are
7:09 pm
already up and running from what caltrans told us earlier this year. but the digital fingerprint that we believe these cameras will provide, i believe will give us that increased level of evidence and information in real time to respond and to have what we need to prosecute those who are causing the crime that we're experiencing just heavily throughout this region and the city. >> all right. thank you so much for joining us today. appreciate it. >> thanks for your support, and thanks for holding us accountable to getting this done. >> all right. let's get back to the sierra snow now and more of it is falling as we speak. check out this time-lapse from earlier this afternoon. the camera is at the dollar point in tahoe city area. great news for people hoping to get another ski trip in before the season ends. joining us now is kevin cooper, or coop as we like to call him. the director of communications at cali pass resorts. how are conditions out there right now? >> they're real good. i mean this is just starting to roll in right now.
7:10 pm
i don't know if you can see it behind me but the snow is just falling lightly right now. no wind. but i'll tell you what. the next 24 hours, i was listening to jeff. it's looking really good. we're looking at probably, let's just say, at a minimum at lake level, you know, 12 inches. but when you get up to the crest, down at the western slope, we're looking 24 inches with a high of up to 3 feet. what a great way to wind out march, easter, and roll into april. >> that's a lot of snow, coop. we've had a lot of snow this year. can you talk to us about how crucial this has been for the resorts? >> it is been great. i mean this is a tough year. the start of this winter, december into january, we were all like, oh, gosh, is it going to really start to snow? and then it just did. we saw february, and then march has brought it back up. if you look at berkeley lab, we're up almost above, literally, at 100% of snowpack. we're getting ready to be
7:11 pm
average. 396 for the season so far. it's really good, and skiers and riders are having a good time. and this is good quality snow. this is the sierra cement. we've got good light powder that's coming down. as we go into april to wind out the season, there's another system that we're looking at at the fourth, fifth, and sixth, so it's just really good. for the snowpack, water tables, the state of california, this is absolutely fantastic. >> yeah. i love your positive energy. it's great, and i know a lot of people are, you know, very grateful for this. so i'm wondering how much longer do you think resorts will stay open? are some already extending their seasons? >> some are extending their season. that is a great question. it really does come down to the resort operators. do we keep going on? do we keep pushing? being in the industry for 30 years, this is what we actually sit down and talk about amongst
7:12 pm
our senior leadership tables. how many people are going to come up and see and ride? once easter happens, how many people are going to come up to? some resorts can consolidate, and they can take it down to one resort to kind of make impact with it. some resorts have already announced extending. mammoth is always the outlier just because of where it sits, the snow that it gets. they'll really push it out there. i'm hearing about april 28th, maybe extending into may. we need to wait and see how much snow we get. but it really comes down to the passionate skier and rider and who's going to come up here and ski and ride? here's kind of the beauty. what people don't really get is, oh, i can play tennis, golf, surf, whatever i can in the bay. springtime skiing and riding is amazing, but bring your mountain bike up. bring your hiking shoes up. there's a lot to do in tahoe and
7:13 pm
all over the sierra that you can do besides ski. surf and turf. so it is fun to do, but, you know, it just depends really. when it comes down to it, how many people are actually going to come to the resorts and ski and ride? >> look at you convincing everyone to head up over there and do a lot of different recreational activities. thank you so. always appreciate you on our show. >> take care, guys. see you on the mountain. why is the college admissions process so stressful? a conversation worth having. plus the story behind this history-making headset now headed

7:16 pm
i'm sure a lot of you parents already know it's a stressful time for college-bound high school seniors right now. that's because it is acceptance season. this is the time when colleges and universities let them know whether they got in or not. >> congratulations, class of 2028. go, bears! >> uc berkeley released its admissions decisions yesterday. also posted this video on social media welcoming the class of 2028. most ucs notify students of their acceptance status sometime in march, and there is a lot of pressure for students to get into their dream schools. and it can be extremely
7:17 pm
disappointing when it doesn't happen for them. so tonight, let's go ahead and talk about it. joining me now is irina smith. she's an author, a former admissions officer for stanford, and an independent college counselor based right here in the bay area. irina, let's talk about what's driving the pressure on students to get into certain schools. >> so, audrey, first of all, thank you so much for having me on. secondly, the many different reasons students are starting to feel -- or begin to feel pressure very early on, partly we live in a very high success area with a lot of very accomplished parents who themselves went to big-name schools. so there's a sense of either unspoken expectation or articulated expectations, and students feel like their hard academic work needs to be validated by admission to a highly selected college
7:18 pm
university. >> year after year, i talk to my fellow parents, and they say every year it seems like it gets harder and harder to get into these colleges. so if a student doesn't get into their top choice or choices, what do you recommend they do? >> well, so i think first of all, let's talk about what colleges we're talking about. you said in the introduction, their dream school, right? so to be a little cynical, i don't think there's such a thing as a dream school anymore or a perfect school any more than there is like a perfect spouse or a perfect pair of jeans. you know what i mean? you can come close, but it's whatever you make of it. so i think it's getting harder and harder because more and more students are applying to the same number of schools. it's the top 20 typically in the "u.s. news & world report." and the more students apply, the more selective those colleges are. the more selective they are, mort students want to apply there. and it becomes this sort of
7:19 pm
vicious circle. if students are not admitted, -- since this is still early days, the first thing i would suggest is that students and their families should take a deep breath. emotions are running really high right now. i would just let everybody kind of calm down, take the weekend, take a beat, and then really think about where did they get in, and how does that align with their actual goals? because i think it's worth it to think about goals beyond getting into a certain school and instead thinking more long-term. what do i want to do? do i want to be an engineer? do i want to study literature? do i want to be a musician? and i think a lot of times students get very fixated on, i didn't get into this school, so i have to try to get into it
7:20 pm
instead of maybe looking at where they did get in and how that can work. if they still have their heart absolutely set on getting into school x or y, i would follow the directions first and foremost very carefully that came with either the waitlist or deferral or whatever decision they received. and if there's a letter of continued interest, for example, that they can write, that's a good idea, especially if there are new developments in their application. they can talk to their college counselor at their school to see if the school can advocate for them. but, again, i would really be careful about not looking at what their possibilities are and focusing on what their possibilities are not. >> i do love your advice. you know, just talking about take a deep breath. it doesn't have to be so stressful. there is no dream place. there are a lot of avenues you can take to still succeeding and hopefully, you know, doing what you really want to do with your life.
7:21 pm
so i love that. irena, thank you so much for joining us this evening. really appreciate it. >> thank you for having me. so here's something else catching our attention tonight. it was a history-making moment on opening day at the coliseum for the a's new play-by-play announcer jenny cavnar. you are looking at mlb authenticators taking her headset and talk-back box. it's going to be going to the baseball hall of fame in cooperstown, new york. she is the first female main play-by-play announcer in the mlb. a look at the san mateo bridge. slippery drive home tonight. jeff is jeff is g

welcome back. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. we're continuing to track rain on stormranger right now. as we head through tomorrow morning, we'll keep some scattered rain chances in the forecast even through the afternoon with a possibility of thunderstorms, maybe even some small hail. then here's the good part. by easter morning, we should be dry, but we'll hang on to the cloud cover. by easter afternoon, we get the chance of some scattered thunderstorms returning. overall totals tomorrow, about a quarter of an inch, and then for easter sunday, it's just trace amounts to about a tenth of an inch. we're going to start it off tomorrow chilly, down in the 40s with that thunderstorm chance. through the afternoon, only low 60s throughout the bay area. so, again, on easter, most importantly, we're dry for the
