baltimore. the remains of two construction workers have been found. there are four others missing, other men, and they are presumed dead. officials now say it's too dangerous for divers to navigate around the wreckage. brie jackson joins us with the latest. what do we know about these recovery efforts? >> reporter: so in their latest update, the maryland state police now say this is a salvage operation. they have been using sonar to scan the area, and they believe the vehicles that are still trapped under water are encased in concrete and surrounded by the structures that came crashing down. the six workers who vanished into the wat eser are being remembered as devoted family men who came to america from mexico and central america. maryland's governor westmore met with some of the families. >> they had no idea them going to work was going to turn into a deadly occurrence. when i had a chance to meet with their families and pray with and for their families, they were

reminding me of who they were as people, they were fathers, sons, husbands, people who their families relied on. >> reporter: president biden met with transportation secretary pete buttigieg to discuss the response to the bridge collapse, saying that the white house will be with the people of baltimore for as long as it takes. the ntsb says that they have recovered the black box recording from the container ship that crashed into the bridge. the agency also says there were 56 containers of hazardous materials on board the ship. and some have been breached. the crew of the ship is still on board, and they do ahave power. federal investigators went on board to begin interviewing them. the investigation could last one or two years. in illinois, four people were killed and five others wounded in a rampage in and around the town of rockford. most, but not all, of the victims were stabbed in an

attack across several locations beginning around 1:00 p.m. local time. the police chief called them heinous crimes. >> this is a pretty painstaking event. my heart goes out to the families right now who are suffering a loss. >> the dead have not been identified, but we know that a 15-year-old girl among them. one of the wounded is in critical condition. the other four are stable. authorities say they have arrested a 22-year-old man and a motive is under investigation. turning to virginia where two women were shot at a day care center in springfield after a gunman fired through the door. police say the man tried to speak with one of the women with whom he had a relationship, but she refused to let him in. both victims were rushed to the hospital with what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. more than 70 children were inside the building. luckily none of them were hurt. after an hours-long manhunt, a 41-year-old suspect was arrested. there has been a troubling string of violent incidents in

new york city. several women have recently posted on tiktok, describing the terrifying moments they were punched in the face on the street by unprovoked men. steven romo has more. >> i was literally just walking, and a man came up and punched me in the face. >> reporter: stories from new york city women going viral on tiktok. >> i just got punched by some man on the sidewalk. >> reporter: their videos detailing how they're allegedly getting punched in the face completely unprovoked. several women have posted these videos, describing similar allegations in just the last week. halley kate posted on monday, she said she had to be treated at a medical facility for injuries to the left side of her face. >> oh, my god, it hurts so bad i can't even talk. >> reporter: olivia brand posting updates on her own experience after commenters started started connecting the two

cases. >> i just got a call from the detective. >> reporter: the nypd is investigating the incidents, but it's unclear right now whether they're connected. police announced one assault arrest related to halley's case, a 40-year-old taken into custody. other users posting videos, expressing shock, fear and even sharing tapes for staying safe, like not being distracted on your phone while you're out and about. it's not the first time this type of incident has been reported in the city. >> when videos like that first started popping up, everyone was sending them to me and saying look, this girl went through something similar. >> reporter: she says she was punched in the face by someone she didn't know last september. >> so we were like kind of walking toward each other, and he didn't seem crazy or scary or anything. and then before i knew it, he kind of went at me diagonally and punched me in the face and ran that way. >> reporter: nypd data from last month shows many crimes are down

in the city, compared with last year. including shootings, burglaries and murders. but felony assaults are up. broken down by week, misdemeanor assaults are up 10%, compared to the same period last year. however, this data is not broken down by gender. and some women, like elio, who carries a self-defense kit saying in light of recent attacks they don't feel safer. >> i love new york, but as a woman, it is very scary. so i kind of feel safer, like carrying something with me to defend myself. that way in case it happens again, i'm not completely defenseless. >> our thanks to steven for that report. president biden and former president trump could cross paths in new york city today. the nypd says it expects mr. trump to visit long island this afternoon to attend the wake of a slain officer. officer jonathan diller was shot and killed monday in queens when he approached a driver parked illegally. the trump campaign says the former president was moved by
