now at 11:00, the break is about to be over. across the bay area, clouds are moving in for our first storm of the spring. it will be a wet weekend. >> let's get straight to meteorologist vna are on a. some snow up in tahoe? >> a little bit of everything. we have been enjoying the 70s. it felt like spring around here. we are seeing dry conditions across the barrier. notice temperatures in the 50s. i want to show you where it currently is on satellite radar. can see it as the system is

through, it will become widespread into the south bay. associated with that front will be southerly wind, and a drop in temperatures. once it really starts moving in, the 70s we were enjoying will drop into the 60s. here's a closer look. for tonight, aside from the cloud cover, conditions we will see dry and rain really moving and starting tomorrow. depending on where you are throughout your day, if you are starting out north of golden gate bridge, you will be the first to see the rain south, things will change and yes, as we talked about sierra snow, we are preparing for a new winter storm warning which will bring a couple to the peaks so far in this sierra. >> thank you. the sierra is bracing for more snow. this is what it looks like on i- 80 tonight. the roads are still clear, but traffic is moving smoothly.

drivers should expect delays and possible chain controls, starting tomorrow afternoon. as this next storm approaches, you can track it from the palm of your hand with our radar. download our free nbc bay area app, point your camera phone at the screen. who did this? this is what the owner of skillet cafe is wondering. this is on niles boulevard in fremont. someone broken overnight and stole the safe. joslyn moran spoke with the owner, and customers in disbelief. >> reporter: the door has been fixed, but this is an uneasy feeling in the community. one of the owners tell us they got a call from the manager this morning letting them know the restaurant had been broken into. and she got here, there was shattered glass everywhere. >> reporter: this is what priscilla saw when she walked into her restaurant this morning in fremont. the window of the door, broken, and pieces of glass all over

the floor >> someone broke into skillet and stole everything. >> reporter: she posted this video on social media. >> they destroyed our whole restaurant. >> i just started crying. at that point, you just feel so violated, they moved everything around, they test everything. >> reporter: repairs were made, and she had to go to her other restaurant, where they had a planned event with the city of fremont, for restaurant week. >> it will affect us a lot. i have not had time to process anything, because we had an event and life goes on but there are bigger issues in this world than what happened to us. but, i think tomorrow, we will realize that, you know, bills need to be paid. >> reporter: fixing damages costs money. but, her safe was also stolen. >> they actually took a whole safe full of money. and they took our cash register. they took lots of checks.

rattled after a troubleshooting. at this late hour, the search continues for two suspects, believed to be armed and dangerous. the shooting happened around 3:00 at a light rail station near sac state. one man was killed and another hurt. investigators are also looking at a carjacking that happened nearby. it is unconfirmed if it is related, but they say the car was found abandoned in that parking lot. the relatives of the family killed in a crash in san francisco have released their first statement. the family was waiting for a bus at the west portal station, on saturday, when an suv smashed into this. diego talavera, a brazilian national who worked at apple, his wife, and there one month old and three month old sons all died. the chronicle is reporting their relatives say they were life enhancers, the kind of people everyone loves to be around. they also thanked the first responders. the driver, 78-year-old mary

lau is out of the hospital now, but has not been taken into custody. no word yet on what charges she will face. possibly a felony vehicular manslaughter. the da will make that decision. in oakland, a somber ceremony to mark one of the darkest days in the city's history. >> today is the 15th anniversary of for fallen officers. >> reporter: mayor sheng thao let a moment of silence to mark 15 years since the for oakland police officers were killed by a single gunman, a convicted felon wanted for a parole violation back in 2009. it was the single deadliest attack on police in california. history. officers john hickey, sergeant irvin roman, sergeant daniel, and sergeant mark dunnigan were remembered today. two of them were killed after the felon opened fire during a routine traffic stop. the other two after they tried to track the suspect down. we have learned that 77-

year-old cm nguyen was killed after he ended up on highway 101. it is not clear how he got there. there was a silver alert issued for interstate when he disappeared. today, chp confirmed that nguyen was hit by a car. the driver that hit him now faces potential dui charges. it is unclear, again, why nguyen was on the highway. developing at this hour, the search for a missing high? . this is 30-year-old caroline meister. she left from zen mountain center, in a remote area of monterey county. she has not been seen since. more than 60 search teams from around the state are helping look for her. her family says she is an experienced hiker, but only had enough food and water for one day. cal fire is making sure it's crews are ready for nighttime firefights.

over the next few months, the pilots will be undergoing nighttime training. table practice with night vision goggles. they will be doing water drops during times of low visibility. people living in alameda, contra costa, and santa clara counties should expect to hear low-flying helicopters, periodically, over the next few months. new at 11, protesting pickle ball. neighbors in richmond are trying to stop the pickle ball court from being permanently built in a public space. they claim the courts will negatively impact community events at the venue, but that is not stopping the developers from holding a pickle ball tournament this weekend. that tournament is expected to draw a big protest. >> reporter: a go to venue for large-scale events, providing panoramic views of the bay. however, a portion of the city- owned site has been transformed into pickle ball courts, but orden development, with a long- term lease of the venue. it is not sitting well with some neighbors.

>> this isn't about pickle ball. it is about public space. we want to make sure that the pavilion stays as a public space. >> used to be a place where people are open and invited. not where somebody have to be in a particular sport to be have able to have access to it. >> reporter: there speaking out against breakable courts at the greenway and are planning protest of the site this weekend, where a pickle ball event is scheduled. >> the fact that it is being limited just to this one thing is a huge problem, because, it is going to cut out all the other interests that we have. >> reporter: richmond mayor claudia gimenez says the proposal for a pickle ball court at the pavilion was rejected last year, and the second proposal is still under review by both the city and state lands commissions, since it is public land. despite the city attorney

telling orden not to build pickle ball courts until the review is complete, gimenez says developers tell the city that this week's pickle ball event is a standalone event, no different than other events held at the venue. >> the whole mission of this space was to have community events that bring together the community to stimulate economic activity, and that could happen. so, we need to figure out how we do the negotiation. >> reporter: as city leaders and developers work on the best past path forward for the site, administered to say residents have a chance to weigh in on the topic next tuesday. in richmond, nbc bay area news. this could be you. thousands of california homeowners will soon be left without insurance. state farm says it is dropping about 2% of its homeowners policies in california. that equals about 70,000 customers. state farm already stopped writing new policies within the state last year, and raised its rates. the company says this will help it and ensure long-term

watch this and check it out. it looks like it is something out of a movie. a chaotic scene in downtown l.a., a man hijacked that a bus that you can see, there, and then crashes it into the ritzy ritz-carlton. it happened just before midnight last night. police tell us that a man held the driver at gunpoint and forced him to drive around for about 30 minutes. the surveillance video shows the bus plowing through an intersection, colliding with a car, and then racing down the street. police say the whole ordeal ended when the gunmen grabbed the steering wheel, while the driver was turning, was called the caused the bus to crash right into the ritz carlton. the gunmen took off, police caught up with him half an hour later. luckily, no one was hurt. a deadly shooting involving a hunter is happening in alameda county. investigators say that the bounty hunter got into a fight with a man, wanted for felony charges. at some point, the wanted man was shot. taken to the hospital, and he

later died. bounty hunters estate of the scene. unclear if any arrests will be made. tonight, a federal lawsuit is sending shockwaves through silicon valley and beyond. the doj, along with more than a dozen states, including california, have filed a suit, laming that apple is trying to monopolize the smartphone business. hears tech reporter scott butman. >> reporter: in an otherwise strong day for the stock market, the lawsuit sent apple investors heading for the exits today. apples market value down 7%, or about $110 billion but the doj lawsuit claiming apple is using and iphone monopoly to stifle condition, and hurt consumers. >> reporter: the department of justice says the apple iphone and its ecosystem make up a monopoly that hurts consumers, developers, and other smart phone companies. >> for consumers, that has meant fewer choices. higher prices and fees, lower

quality smartphones, apps, and accessories, and less innovation from apple and competitors. >> reporter: apple currently has more than half of the smartphone market. of the first two people we found walking around silicon valley today, one had an iphone , and the other had two android phones. proof that if you don't want to be a part of what the doj calls apples walled garden, >> there are definitely options for consumers out there. >> reporter: you don't have to. >> i don't know any consumer that stays locked in when they think the experience they have is subpar or painful. >> reporter: apple released a statement after the lawsuit was filed, saying, quote, this lawsuit threatened to we are, and the principles that set apple products apart in fiercely competitive markets. oakland going digital, part

of a new effort to get information out to the community. 50 digital kiosks will be installed in some of the city's busiest areas, including the downtown corridor, east oakland , two-sided touchscreen provide information on things like dining, shopping, and local events and even city jobs. social services, including shelters and food resources. the kiosk will also act as a free wi-fi hotspot, and include an emergency 911 button if you need to contact police. this is a spring tradition, right, getting excited about giantess baseball and the food. the team give us a sneak peek of things waiting for us at the ballpark. we are all a bunch of foodies here. in addition to the classics, fans will now be able to grab cove crab noodles, a bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and something called a waffle mitt

friday, you will notice the wind kicking up a notch, and also, yes, have a cooldown. let's get right to that microclimate forecast, because, right now, we are seeing a bit of cloud cover. but, that is going to continue to increase. here is the reason why. we have our satellite radar, things are dry mostly across california, but you notice, or that here, in the pacific, we already have some rain developing, and that is going to begin to make it smooth, starting tomorrow. i will take you to the timing and a second. i want to show you where it is right now, still off the coast, not quite making it to land yet, but let's break it down in your hour by hour outlook if you want to follow along, we have it right here. starting at about 12:30, notice, very scattered, san rafael, most of the south bay not really catching the rain. as far as the early morning commute goes, you will be okay. dry conditions are expected. heading into the 2:00 and 3:00 hour, you will notice we start to see some moderate rain at times. it does become more widespread

starting to move into areas like fremont, palo alto, san jose, and also the coastal mountains. we pick up some moderate rain, light to moderate at times, not expect heavy pockets out of that initial one. it will remain that way, on and off, scattered through saturday morning. is about folder:30, there has a brief break for the south bay and then here it is, you can see a line of showers making its move through saturday, also we expect to see some moderate rain. but, because of that instability, there is a chance that we could see some isolated thunderstorm activities as well, heading into not only tomorrow, but also saturday. as the cold front passes through, wind will kick it up a notch, and rainfall totals right now, i mentioned they were not so impressive, notice a lot of that sneaks far north, the coastal mountain, and we are talking about anywhere from half an inch to a full inch in coastal areas and mountains. everywhere else is less than half an inch. the wind speed, 30+ miles per

hour, this is around tomorrow at 6:00 but you will certainly notice the breeze kicking up a notch, especially for those higher peaks. we did make mention of the sierra and i want to give you more details on when those winter warnings go into effect. this is starting on friday evening. now, some of the gusty wind will be for high elevations. we could see anywhere from two feet to three feet. even in those lower elevation areas, we should be talking about possible travel delays, anytime we are dealing with the wind, increasing road hazards, and some good news, even though we will see a cooldown, it looks like we will get a brief break on monday and then a storm system moving in next wednesday. it will be on and off. that will be the good news. >> you are very optimistic. thank you. up next, a group of kids in santa cruz, in the mountains, got what ey found

a strong start for reddit on wall street. the san francisco-based company jumped almost 50% in its debut on the new york stock exchange. the first major social media company to go public since pinterest did back in 2019. reddit priced its ipo yesterday at $34 per share. the stock opened at $47 per share, and it closed at just about $50 per share. distractor cassette, first of its kind discovery in the santa cruz mountains, thanks to some curious kids. students in socal were building a dam and found a forearm bone from eight jefferson's ground sloth. this loss, the size of an ox, weighed over 1000 pounds, and they went extinct 11,000 years ago. paleontologists had no idea these sloths were even found in this region until the kids understood. the animal is named for president thomas jefferson. he found fossilized bones from
