schreck details on an officer involved shooting that shut down a north bay freeway for hours. what happened moments before police fired their guns? a major freeway weekend culture causing headaches for drivers, but it did not put a damper on celebrations for st. patrick's day. we will take you there. the news at 5:00 starts now, thank you for joining us. >> we want to get you to the breaking news in san francisco. a tragic afternoon. >> two are dead and three others in the hospital after a car plowed into a bus stop. live from the scene, what have we learned? >> reporter: well, we just spoke with the fire department and they did confirm one of the two people killed was a child. the department has not confirmed the ages of anyone involved, but the mayor was out

here, she posted on social media an hour ago calling this heartbreaking. we are out here at ulloa street and west portal avenue, this happened this afternoon at the bus stop just behind me. there is a transit center in the area with a lot of people coming and going on to the transit. police say that a car headed eastbound ran into the bus stop, four people were hit by the car, two died at the scene. as we mentioned, one of the two victims was a child and we don't know how old the child was or the relationship of that child to the other person who died. paramedics took three other people to the hospital and one of those was the driver. there is no word on their conditions, but the fire department says the driver will undergo blood testing, but they cannot say what led up to the crash at this point.

>> some people say the st. patrick's day celebrations in dublin are a family tradition and something they would not miss. one thing that is a little different nearby, lane closures on 680. >> this morning in dublin, people grabbed a spot on the route for the st. patrick's day parade. >> we are local. we went to dublin high. >> there is a sense of community. you know, we come and watch every year. it is good to see all these people. >> people putting on their green gear to watch, from bagpipes to equestrians, plenty to see. >> it is really cool to see how many people come out and enjoy. >> the city estimates 80,000 people will visit dublin this weekend to celebrate and there was some concern that a weekend freeway culture could mean traffic. caltrans crews are repaving

southbound 680 between 580, 680 in highway 84. the work was planned for a different weekend, but pushed back because of rainy weather. yesterday dublin leaders told us that they planned around the closure noting that all roads into dublin on 580 and 680 are open. >> we were pretty sure it would not impact us too much. we know the way around. >> by this afternoon this was southbound 680 before the detour, backed up and slow going. still, those at the parade and festival say the possible traffic congestion did not stop them from coming out to have a good time. >> it is always really fun. >> okay, let's show you the closure on southbound 680 which is still in effect through early monday morning. if you need to drive here, this is how you get around the closure. you can take eastbound 580 out

to highway 84 or you can take westbound 580 all the way to 880. south from contra costa you can take highway 24, that goes to 580 or 880. also you can take i-80 all the way to 882 avoid the closure. schreck more on police activity prompting a north bay freeway to shut down for hours. this was breaking news last night, but we have learned more detail since. 9:30, officers tried to pull over a driver when someone inside the car fired a gun. police return fire. it forced police to close all lanes of 780 between columbus parkway and southampton road. nobody was hurt in the gunfire, officers arrested two people. all lanes reopened around 5:00 this morning. in the south bay a driver arrested after a deadly crash which happened just after 11:00 last night on southbound 280. this was on the word avenue on-

ramp in san jose. a man walked onto the highway and was hit by a car. the man died, police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. video of a runway crash near sacramento injuring two chp officers. dash cam from a passing car caught this, a car slamming head on into the patrol car in davis on wednesday. on the shoulder of i-80, two officers were in the patrol car with their seatbelt on. a driver swerved, drove against traffic slamming had on into the patrol car. officers were taken to the hospital. officers have arrested the driver. coming up, st. patrick's day is tomorrow, but the festivities are well underway across the bay area. we will take you to one of the biggest celebrations. introducing you to a woman known for helping her community

moved to los gatos and started volunteering at the senior nutrition center she fit in. >> i volunteer here on a friday, by monday on the kitchen manager. and then the executive director. boom, boom, boom. no skills at all whatsoever. >> back then, the center associated with the second harvest food bank run out of the methodist church said about 30 seniors a day. kathy nursed it through the pandemic and has continued to grow it. >> we average 80 to 85. >> kathy says people are often surprised and he was the community that there is so much need. but, she along with her lab rosie see it every day. it is part of what motivates her. the other part is much more personal. kathy says she too has gone through some rough patches.

the coastal fog returns in a few hours. this is a live look at lake tahoe. it is gorgeous with snowpack mountains and crystal blue waters, 52 degrees. i don't have any warnings or anything to know about. tahoe is clear to go today, tomorrow and monday. on satellite and radar we are clear in the bay area through the sierra and now to the central coast. as we go to los angeles in the mountains, las vegas and arizona, they are dealing with a little unsettled weather. it should be getting better tomorrow and through the rest of the week. back at home we will see something similar to what we are used to in the summer. a little bit of cooling as we go to the afternoon and start to see that patchy fog drifting in for saturday night. and into the early or morning hours there is patchy fog to the east bay shoreline and santa clara valley. then we clear out and enjoy another day in the 70s. if you missed the celebration

in dublin, there's another day tomorrow as the temperature is nice and comfortable. even if you're setting up in the morning under the sunshine, temperatures will be in the 70s for the afternoon. take your sunglasses and the sunscreen, enjoy the 70s wherever you go. wine country 71 in mountain view and 66 in san francisco to continue celebrating. monday starting off the workweek, these temperatures are not bad. mid-seventies in martinez, 77 in san jose and 66 in half moon bay. we will stay dry as we welcome spring on tuesday. this pattern stays with us for a couple of days and then we are looking a little bit more of the green. aside from st. patrick's day, this is the return of rainfall and these models are putting it together as we going to late friday afternoon the breeze will pick up which could also stick around as we go into saturday. that's coming up way into next

tomorrow, thousands will race up there running shoes as the oakland marathon is back, but today it was the kids chance. about 1000 children took the starting line near lake merritt in partnership with the eight, learn, play foundation. kids race 1/4 mile up to 1/2 mile depending average. students from oakland school district got the race for free, it is all a push to help kids live healthier lives. >> it's about opening up doors of opportunities for kids and giving them support and resources that they need to have a happy and healthy childhood. if we can take a beautiful

news on the east coast, a gunman accused of killing three family members and then barricaded himself in a home. >> now the standoff is over in trenton, new jersey. andre gordon was taken into custody after a crime spree spanning two states, he carjacked a driver in new jersey at gunpoint this morning and then shot and killed three family members in two locations in pennsylvania, the first kilt is 52-year-old stepmother and 13-year-old sister. three other people in the home were hiding, he then went to a second home where he shot and killed a 25-year-old woman with whom he shares two children. >> at the time there were four individuals present in the home. one of which was injured after being legend with the assault rifle. she was transported to jefferson for her injuries. >> after the shootings gordon barricaded himself in a trenton home. gordon slipped out of the home but was arrested nearby. tensions
