"oppenheimer" did everything but bomb on hollywood's biggest night. the critical darling dominated the oscars taking home seven of the top awards including best

picture. but there were plenty of surprises for movie fans at the 96th academy awards. jennifer bjorklund joins us live from the dolby theater. i'm sure the celebrations are still going. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, you know, they really are and the cleanup is going on at the dolby theater behind me. "barbie" raked in at the box office but it was "oppenheimer" that was pure gold at the osc oscars. >> and i see "oppenheimer." >> reporter: a three-hour summer blockbuster about the making of the atomic bomb dominated the academy awards winning seven, including best picture. >> i could deny it but i've been dreaming about this moment for too long. >> producer emma thomas saw her husband christopher nolan win best director for the first time. including robert downey jr. who won best supporting actor.

the night. and it was in a ceremony that started earlier than usual, 4:00 p.m. here in hollywood and on the time change day, so a feels like time of 3:00 in the afternoon, i say it just left a little more time for all those after parties, frances. >> i'm sure they are going on even now. jennifer, thank you. now to the race for the white house. president biden is taking his state of the union message on the road. the president -- the biden campaign says they brought in $10 million in contributions in the 24 hours after the state of the union. that boost of money now being put to work as the president ramps up his campaign schedule. nbc's brie jackson joins us from d.c. brie, there are another round of primaries tomorrow. what's important about those contests? >> reporter: good morning, frances. so this week we could see president biden and former president trump officially lock up their nominations but both candidates are focused on the general election. one big state to watch tuesday

comprehensive plan to fix our immigration system. >> reporter: this week president biden is also expected to travel to new hampshire, wisconsin and michigan. in michigan the president will try to win over the 100,000 people who voted uncommitted in the democratic primary. those votes were largely in protest of the u.s. response to the israel-hamas war. frances. >> brie, thank you. new this morning an investigation is under way after a deadly plane crash in virginia. authorities say all five people aboard a small private plane were killed including a child. police say the plane was not scheduled to land at a small airport, they believe the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing, hit trees and crashed into the hillside. the ntsb is looking into the crash. there are new details about the helicopter crash that killed three people in texas friday. the national guard identified the two army national guard soldiers who were killed as casey francosci and john gracia

and also chris luna. a fourth person survived, identified as an army national guard soldier. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. the muslim holy month of ramadan has begun with no sign of peace in the middle east. after a ceasefire in the gaza strip remained allusive despite a ramp up of diplomacy heading into the holiday. both sides are blaming each other for the impasse. let's go live to claudio lavanga for the impasse. claudio, good morning. first tell us how has ramadan proceeded so far? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, the fear here is that starting ramadan while the war in gaza is still ongoing it will only contribute to fuel the anger, the frustration among muslims in israel, the palestinian territories and the wider region and that means it would only take a spark to ignite violent confrontation there. ramadan also started with

president biden and benjamin netanyahu taking shots at each other in two separate interviews. just take a listen. >> he has a right to defend israel, a right to continue to pursue hamas, but he must, he must, he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken. he's hurting in my view, he's hurting israel more than helping israel by making the rest of the world -- it's contrary to what israel stands for and i don't think it's a big mistake. >> well, i don't know exactly what the president meant but if he meant by that that i'm pursuing private policies against the wish of the majority of israelis and that this is hurting the interest of israel then he's wrong on both counts. number one, these are not my private policies only, they are policies supported by the overwhelming majority of israelis. >> reporter: as you heard there this was probably more arguably the most public diplomatic spat

between the president of the united states and the prime minister of israel since the start of the war on october 7th. >> claudio, thank you. now to residents along the eastern seaboard who are drying out this morning after a massive storm barrelled up the coast bringing heavy rain, snow and tornadoes. icy conditions in new hampshire left one skier dead and two others injured. two hours away homes were submerged along the state's coast. there was a similar scene in south carolina where high water stranded drivers. the national weather service blaming tornadoes for damage to homes in alabama and georgia let's bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman for the latest on this system. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, frances. the good news is we're not going to see scenes like this this morning but we are looking at gusty winds, winds gusting up to 40, 60 miles per hour that could create power outages. it's chilly, too, and the wind is making it feel tolder than that. also could see airport delays. dealing with that area of low pressure moving off to the east but bringing gusty winds throughout this monday, even by

this afternoon, evening hours we will see the winds gusting higher. 62 million people under wind alerts, wind advisories in the blue, purple a high wind warning including roanoke just north of asheville. here are the winds expected throughout the afternoon and evening hours, near 50 miles per hour in albany, new york city, atlantic city, boston, could see winds gusting higher than that, closer to 60 miles per hour in some spots. also dealing with wintry weather, that cold air is setting the stage for some snow. you could see that on radar where you see the blue that is the snow falling. we're going to add to some of the amounts we got over the weekend, mainly in the interior parts of the northeast into new england. because of that we have nearly 3 million in the northeast and new england under winter alerts, we have winter weather advisories in white, winter storm warnings in the pink, that klis

could boost access to popular weight loss medications. but first young americans are turning to buy now pay later plans and not just for big ticket items like vacations and concerts. let's get over to cnbc's charlotte reed. good morning. >> good morning, frances. 53% of buy now pay later users are 35 years old or younger according to a study by lexus risk solutions. millennials and gen z's are using after pay which allow customers to make payments in seven installments with little or no interest rates. they've beenusing these services for travel and concert tickets, more and more we see young adults use buy now pay later for every day items like groceries, makeup and contact lenses. some say young adults are turning to the services because of higher prices but some analysts worry that this could spur some more risky spending.
