12:00 pm
hi, everyone, i'm zinhle essamuah. >> i'm kate snow. "nbc news daily" starts right now. today, friday, march 1st, 2024, prosecutor on defense, closing arguments in the hearing against the georgia district attorney overseeing the state's
12:01 pm
trump election interference trial. how she's fighting possible disqualification, and what it could mean for the former president. guilty on all counts, a dramatic conclusion to a headline-grabbing case, a woman convicted for her role in the death of her boyfriend's estranged wife. >> whiteout, a winter storm blanketing parts of california and nevada. traveling anywhere and nearly impossible. how long the intense conditions could last. and all clear, the dramatic decision from the cdc to ease covid isolation guidelines, the new recommendations, and what they really mean to you. thanks so much for ending your week with us, and starting your month. >> yeah, happy friday, happy march 1st. >> that's right, we're going to start this hour in georgia, where closing arguments are under way in a hearing that could dramatically change one of the criminal cases for president donald trump. >> connected to the 2020 election interference case in georgia, the former president, and others, were indicted over alleged efforts to overturn the results in georgia, but today's
12:02 pm
hearing centers on the district attorney who's been overseeing the case, fani willis, a judge will decide if she should be disqualified buff alleged misconduct involving her relationship with a lawyer she appointed as a special prosecutor in the case. >> here with the latest nbc news correspondent marissa parra in atlanta, can you bring us up to speed on the highlights here? >> reporter: absolutely. well, kate and zinhle, first i'll start with what we heard so far. today the judge has said he wants it to be focused on the arguments, both the state and the defense have indicated they want to submit further evidence but the judge has said let's wait, i want to hear the arguments first. i may not even need the additional evidence. so, we heard first from the defense, tender attorneys representing either the folks who applied and submitted that initial motion, and of course the co-defendants who joined in on the motion to disqualify willis and her entire team. the defense painting a picture of willis and wade living this lavish lifestyle and of course painting a picture of willis
12:03 pm
benefiting financially from this, this wave. we have started to hear from the state but we know over the last couple of weeks there's been a lot of testimony, and they're recapping what we've already heard, and so over the last couple of weeks, remember, we did hear from willis herself, it was a very dramatic moment when she took stand and they have said, they have testified that, yes, they were in a consent sens yule relationship, it lasted about a year and it was after he was appointed as special prosecutor, not before, arguing she did not profit from his work, that they split thecos of whatever trips they were taking but that she paid him in cash. in terms of the stakes here, kate and zinhle, it can't be stated enough, how high the stakes are here, if fani willis is disqualified her entire team would be disqualified with her, and so in terms of what would happen next, that would absolutely shape the outcome of this, or at least have the potential to do so. then they would need to -- there would need to be a non-partisan
12:04 pm
council to look for a new attorney to take over the case, time to reassign this and this would be a massive undertaking, a years long endeavor by willis and her team, so it would take time for that attorney to get up to speed on it and then the final note i want to leave you with here, that attorney would be able to make their own judgment on whether to take up some of these charges or drop it all together, which would be a huge political victory for the former president during an election year, kate and zinhle. >> do we have any idea when the judge could make a decision? >> reporter: that is the biggest question of all, and we don't have an indication. we know historically the judge doesn't rule from the bench but he hasn't said that he won't, so it is possible we could find out today, it's also possible he might take some time to write a decision, it's also possible he might say, let's take more time to get more evidence, all things, of course, we are waiting to find out over the next couple of hours. >> zinhle, kate. >> marissa parra for us, thank you. a major blizzard slamming northern california.
12:05 pm
>> the national weather service says the safe travel window is over, especially in the sierra nevada mountains, roads are getting buried with snow, already several crashes on interstate 80 just outside lake tahoe, yosemite national park is also closed through at least sunday, and nbc news meteorologist bill karins will have the forecast for us in a moment. but first, we'll go to nbc news correspondent steve patterson who's out in it, near lake tahoe. steve, i see a lot of snow. let us know how the conditions are, around you. >> reporter: yeah, safe to say that we are in it at this point now, kate, the reason for the warnings, if you haven't gotten to your destination, there's no reason to go now. it is now dangerous, the snow has been falling precipitously for a few hours, it's only expected to get worse. i would say, driving here, we're in a tahoe city, california, drove up the east side of lake tahoe, i wouldn't call it, you know, maybe life-threatening, but i would say conditions were a bit treacherous, whiteout
12:06 pm
conditions on the roads as you were mentioning one of those major sfwarts i-80 we've already seen several accidents, there is snow on the top of roofs that i can see right now, feet of snow, and of course in the last time this happened, some of those roofs collapsed. this is a very dangerous life-threatening situation for everybody that lives in this area, but especially, especially on the roadways where call trance, those workers trying to do the best they can to keep the roads clear, so people aren't trapped. we spoke to a guy that knows this all too well. a local named kevin cooper, he works for some of the ski resorts in this area, here's the warning he's giving to people about the need to stay off the roads and what's going to happen in the next few hours. listen to this. >> stay off the roads. until caltrans is able to get it open. they have a lot of work to do. this is a lot of snow to move in a short period of time. let them move that snow. saturday, sunday, not the days to ski. come up on monday.
12:07 pm
>> reporter: as you might imagine people here like kevin are hardy, they're used to snow systems like this, in fact they went through this last year, so people tell me two things, that no, they aren't afraid of this storm, but secondly, that they are prepared to hunker down, nobody that has been through something like this wants to get on the road right now, so they're buying as many supplies as they can to stay in place for the foreseeable maybe 48 to 72 hours. >> be prepared and stay cautious. bill, bring you in here, as we heard from steve, the snow is coming down, we see it behind him, this storm is going to last for days, take us through the timing, heading into the weekend. >> yeah, so far it's been a typical storm, the first stage is really only the highest of elevations, the heavy snow, we have a 20 inch report from donner peak, palisades, tahoe, and north star around -- 14 inches, but now that the cold front has gone through, the colder air is moving in. we'll see it accumulating quicker, lighter and fluffier, blowing around more, and that's
12:08 pm
when things will really get treacherous when tonight during the overnight hours we could see two to three inches per hour so the storm system by this evening breaks into pieces, the cold front that brings in the colder air but there's a moist floi coming in, tomorrow afternoon, evening, sunday, it's lighter, and we're also going to get decent amounts of snow in the southern portions of cascades, areas like los angeles, not a huge rain event for the lower elevations but it's a soggy saturday. rainfall totals around san francisco, higher elevations up to an inch, santa barbara, the mountains up to about an inch, los angeles for yourself, only about a quarter inch, maybe a little higher, half inch to an inch in the mountains. as far as the snow totals go, looking at the possibility of five to ten feet, total, in the highest elevations of the sierra, southern cascades, around two to three feet and even in utah, higher elevations, one to three feet. all the skiers have to be patient and everyone has to stay off the roads until this storm is it finished. >> pack your patience, and stay
12:09 pm
safe. meteorologist bill karins and steve patterson, thank you both so much. the largest wildfire in texas history is showing little sign of being contained anytime soon. >> the smokehouse creek fire burned more than 1 million acres of land so far in texas, and parts of oklahoma. it's only 15% contained according to the texas a&m forest service. the smokehouse creek fire is already larger than the top 20 california wildfires, over the past 90 years. nbc news correspondent guad venegas is in hard-hit canadian, texas. what major challenges are firefighters facing rite now to contain these wildfires? >> zinhle, canadian is one of the communities that was struck by this fire, you can see the areas behind me, there's a home that burned down. this is the outskirts of town where the fire quickly came in, and it was the wind, according to one of the witnesses i spoke to, it was the wind that brought it south, and then fastly moved it all on -- across this field, and to the south part of town, so, one of the biggest concerns for authorities here, for fire authorities is the wind picking
12:10 pm
up, over the weekend, there's a lot of areas here in texas, with dry vegetation, just like the vegetation that was here before it was all burned down, now some of the properties next to us, were saved because of the roads here that serve as containment, so when we talk about containment, it's crews out there in the middle of these fields building these barriers or clearing the vegetation in these barriers that will help prevent the fire that could begin to spread once the winds pick up again. >> guad, talk about what you're hearing from people there, i mean, some of these homes we've seen are completely destroyed, people are displaced. what are you hearing? >> reporter: right, kate, so you can see, again, the home next to me, completely destroyed, and on the other part of town we went through a neighborhood where many of the houses burned down, we spoke to some of the neighbors, and they said they saw the fire come in, the day they were evacuated and they knew the moment they left how bad things were. we spoke to melanie managing a
12:11 pm
hotel where she has to stay because her house burned down. this is what she told us. >> there was some sunshine, and the fire was going that way, and then the wind switched directions and it came this way. at which point it became dark, like night and that's when i got in the -- i said, that's it, i looked at my house, i said good-bye, and thank you, because i knew that i was not going to return to home. >> reporter: now, fortunately we have seen members of the red cross here offering help, there's also help coming from the county, and so there's sort of two fronts to this fire, one is to offer help to those that have been affected, whose houses burned down and to help those firefighters fighting in the outskirts. >> guad venegas for us, thank you. time for today's cnbc money minute, dune part two, expected to bring the spice and end a box office drought. >> a rare lego selling for thousands of dollars. steve kovach is with us now.

right now, the average ticket is going for more than $300, the most expensive ever for any women's basketball team. now let's go back to the story we told you about earlier, a guilty verdict today in the case of a connecticut mother who disappeared nearly five years ago. >> her husband was charged and later died by suicide and his girlfriend was charged and found kblt on all counts today. >> we got our connection working with dateline correspondent dennis murphy. you've been following this case since the beginning. i know you're doing a special on it tonight on dateline, remind us how we got here, and why traconis was charged even though jennifer's body was never found. >> yeah, and you're right, it has been a torturous journey to get justice for jennifer. inside the courthouse today in stanford, connecticut, a dramatic and some bear scene, guilty on all counts and then the jurors were polled one by one by the court clerk. michelle traconis slumped in her chair, laid her head down on the defense table and sobbed. so, how did we get here?
12:33 pm
first the state had to prove that jennifer dulos, the mother of five had, indeed, been murdered and that her estranged husband fotis was the killer. because he had a live-in girlfriend the investigators wanted to find out what she knew. she talked to homicide detectives for nine hours, the more she talked, the more authorities believe she was in on a murder conspiracy with her lover. they developed a mountain of evidence against her, she altered her stories, and arguably the most damaging piece of evidence was a video of her on a hartford street leaning out of her boyfriend's truck as he dumped bloody clean-up evidence in city bins and down storm drains, she was ultimately charged with conspiracy to commit murder and other counts having to do with evidence tampering, and hindering an investigation. that's the short version of how we got here. >> the details never get easier. can you walk us through what the jury found here? >> yeah, they had -- the major charge, the dynamite charge was
12:34 pm
conspiracy to commit murder, this is not standing over the victim with a gun. this is being in on the planning, and entering into a conspiracy with another person, in this case her lover fotis. the argument is that she knew what was going on and they had to persuade the jury he did know all about it. it came back to arcane type of testimony with an alibi phone call that fotis set up for himself when he was 70 miles away down the coast killing his wife, she, michelle, was fielding a call from a friend in greece, sorry, a friend in greece, and that had been argued as an alibi. that he was, in fact, in his home office up in farmington, way up north, and not down south killing his wife. so, she became the alibi witness for him. that was her major problem. >> there's so many twists and turns here, but i think important to remember, there are children involved here on both sides. have we heard anything from the loved ones? >> this is a tragedy that just
12:35 pm
spins outside the courtroom. the now convicted person, the girlfriend michelle has a daughter about 17 years old. she is the sole guardian of that child. and then fotis and jennifer had five children. they are now motherless and fatherless and being raised by their elderly grandmother in new york city. they were in and out of the court, both sides of this, the children were there, at various times, they weren't there today. but michelle traconis's parents, she comes from a close family and they have been with her by the side talking to the cameras every day outside the courthouse, including today, and they were just wailing about the injustice of all of this. meanwhile, jennifer has a very close group of friends, support group, who stayed with her all these years and that one or more of them have been to every day of trial and they were there today to finally see justice for jennifer. very, very satisfying, if that's the right word for this awful tragedy.

a few study finds more young adults and teens are being prescribed antidepressants to deal with anxiety and depression. >> young people age 12 to 17 rose 64% since the start of the pandemic in march 2020, according to these findings published by the american academy of pediatrics, and joining us now is dr. yalda, a psychiatrist, and public health expert. thanks for being with us, those numbers are startling. even before the pandemic i know there was a lot of use of antidepressants, and now we're seeing this rise, why do you think that is? >> sure, i've got to start by saying there's nothing wrong with taking antidepressants. >> no. >> i just want to make that clear. we know this, that the mental health of our youth has been deteriorating the past decade or

so. antidepressants are used to treat depression and anxiety and that has been on the rise for the past decade. what happened during the pandemic was our kids were isolated at home, academic structures were broken down, facing their parents losing jobs or losing caregivers to covid. so this already vulnerable population had this extra stress on them. what happened during the pandemic, however, was that care got transitioned to telehealth. so people who couldn't have access to care before because they were in counties that didn't have psychiatrists or child psychiatrists all the sudden had access. authors of the study are saying they don't think the rise you're seeing is necessarily because of need only, they think it's because of access as well. >> increased access to mental health services. >> a positive, right, not a bad thing. >> interestingly, the study found the rate of antidepressant use went up among girls and young women, but declined among young men. do we know why that's happening? >> they don't know exactly why but they have a few theories. in general, females during the
