the conditions have been from the few folks who were able to make it out on foot. this morning the harrowing escape of burning man. >> the entire place is absolutely soaked. >> after two days of heavy rainfall left more than 70,000 trapped in thick mud in the middle of the remote nevada desert. >> driving a vehicle right now is impossible. there is no way you could move a vehicle through this right now. >> the local sheriffs office probing the investigation of one death. the cause still under investigation. >> i think i could be trapped here for a couple more days. >> reporter: the unprecedented downpour started friday. burners were told to shelter in place while closing roads both in and out of the playa. >> did you all know this was likely going to happen? >> we get a daily weather report.

there was no cause for panic. >> reporter: burning man's ceo telling me the self-reliant community of burners came well prepared for desert extremes. >> we made it clear that we do not see this as an evacuation situation and the community is patient and the water is drying up. >> reporter: the sludge not stopping some from making the treacherous journey by foot. >> we took everything we need to survive on our backs. >> reporter: desperate to get to their children back home, this couple walked six miles. >> there were actually rivers that were flooding through the playa where we had to test and see how deep they were. my wife was carried across the river by a very strong man. he carried her on his back. >> reporter: some celebrities literally following in their footsteps. >> we walked three miles. now i think we have five more. >> reporter: dj diplo and comedian chris rock drudging through for miles. back at the camp, trapped burner

coming together and holding on to hope that the weather clears in time for the festival, proving nothing will extinguish the spirit of this movement. the burning man organization advises participants to delay their leaving but also say people are free to leave whenever they want. >> makes you question what you would do if you were in that situation. for more on what's happening on the ground at burning man, let's bring in liz. liz, i know it's early out there, but tell us about the conditions. >> good morning to you. it's dry here right now, but you can see how muddy it still is. we're three miles from blackrock city. that's where 72,000 people are hunkering down right now. the main road had been impassable. we've started to see cars trickling out this morning, some here behind us. many of them covered in mud.

officials are trying to give an update on if they do think people will be able to get out today. we're expecting that update in a couple hours about whether they could lift that shelter in place. they are optimistic they will. one official here told me while parts of the camp are drying out, others remain very wet and soggy. for those stick inside, creators have developed a playa wet survival guide and how to deal with this unprecedented shelter in place. we have talked to a lot of attendees, they are taking this in stride and having a good attitude about it. one person told us true burners are made for this. tom? >> we hope they are. thank you. >> that festival is just one of the packed holiday weekend destinations from coast to coast. more than 100 million americans traveling for the labor day. from the crowds and traffic to

the forecast, we have it all covered for you this morning. kathy park is in eastern tennessee today where drivers are hitting the road. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: hey, sheinelle. good morning to you. behind me is the busy i-40. compared to this time last year, more people are driving or flying to their holiday destinations, experts say probably a good idea to head home now. in the next couple of hours, the gridlock will start stacking up. this morning millions are expected to be on the move with the labor day weekend starting to wind down, capping off a record breaking summer travel season. the tsa reporting 2 million passengers friday and again on saturday, estimating nearly 14 million will have taken to the skies over six days with few signs of trouble. >> this is much, much busier, yeah, but very efficient.

i haven't had any problems. >> it's been basically a best-case scenario what we have seen is a cancellation rate that is well below the normal average. >> reporter: but it's the roads that are seeing the majority of the holiday traffic. 95 million americans choosing to drive to those labor day beaches and barbecues. >> atlanta, chicago, new york, washington, d.c., seattle, denver, any places that are big concentrations of motor vehicles you are going to have a lot of company on the roads. >> reporter: and that's leaving some drivers to head out early. >> we're heading back out sunday early instead of monday to hopefully beat some traffic. >> reporter: if you are leaving today, the best time to avoid congestion is before 10:00 a.m. and any time after 6:00 p.m. don't expect much of a break at the pumps. it is $3.81 a gallon nationally. that is a little higher than the same time last year. as we wrap up the end of summer, experts say it is not too early to book flights for the holidays ahead. >> if you haven't booked your

thanksgiving flights, i wouldn't put it off in the hopes that fares will get cheaper, especially in the final months before travel dates, fares tend to move in one direction, and it's not down. >> reporter: as we get back to this labor day, as of this morning, minimal impacts at the airports, few delays and cancellations. for those drivers, aaa says probably a good idea to inspect your car before heading out onto the roadways because they anticipate rescuing 300,000 stranded motorists the most common reasons include flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts a good idea to have that spare key ready. >> thank you, kathy. many areas of the country are enjoying nice weather this labor day weekend along parts of the east coast, including here in new york, it will feel more like the fourth of july. >> i'll take it. >> the entire summer we have been guessing what the weather will be. it's been crazy. >> well, and i have been predicting it.

that's my role here. yeah, it will be hot but weather-wise, it will be quiet. so we're not really looking at a whole lot of travel troubles caused by weather. although there are spotty showers across the rockies the midwest, the great lakes, down along the gulf coast to the northeast for the most part it's nice and quiet no major delays at any of the airports from coast to coast if you are delayed or canceled, it doesn't have to do with the weather. temperature-wise, though, we have heat advisories and heat warnings in some areas including minneapolis, also across parts of the northeast and even up to new england. temperatures today will be close to records and we'll likely break some records possibly across 25 states minneapolis close to the record of 98 degrees.rrow more of the . and buffalo close to 92 degrees, and hartford up to 9 green bay, 92. that should break the record of 90 degrees detroit should tie a record today. tomorrow more of the same. buffalo close to that record high of 92 degrees philadelphia 96. that would break a record. it is going to stay warm in most

areas. e erie will drop into the 70s that will feel more seasonable but look at new york city. we stay in the 90s through thursday and don't drop into the 80s until thursday. turning now to a community in pennsylvania spending the holiday on high alert as the search intensifies for a convicted killer who escaped from prison late last week the fugitive spotted on camera in that same area over the weekend. george has more on the manhunt good morning >> good morning. as you can imagine, things are very tense around here there is a number of road closures here. there's police with long guns and tactical gear going through properties and checkin every car that comes in and out of the search perimeter all in the hopes of finding that convicted killer, danelo cavalcante this morning the search for a convicted killer in pennsylvania is entering its fifth day. in the air and on the ground, law enforcement officers are using every means available to scour the wooded area for danelo cavalcante >> drone, aviation

we're trying to do everything within our power to ensure that we bring him to justice. >> reporter: over the weekend, a lead in the case after authorities say he was spotted on doorbell video carrying a backpack and still wearing his prison-issued clothing the sighting, less than two miles away from the chester county priso where he escaped early thursday. have there been sleepless nights >> yes yes. of course. worrying about somebody that could come into your backyard and into your house. of course there's been sleepless nights >> we are requesting that residents in the area remain inside, lock your doors, lock your cars. he is still considered an extremely dangerous individual. >> reporter: police say cavalcante has a violent history, escaping just nine days after he was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of an ex-girlfriend authorities say he stabbed her more than 30 times in front of her children he is also wanted for a 2017

murder in his native brazil. >> we're worried, very concerned. >> reporter: local residents on edge police responding to over 100 tips, including possible home break-ins. as a precaution, some businesses in the area temporarily shutting down have you ever seen anything like this before? >> we have never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: with the community on lockdown, police believe they're getting closer to the fugitive still on the run. police have not released any information on how he may have escaped from prison, but they believe he is within a two-mile radius authorities are asking the public to review any doorbell o. and yesterday in surveillance cameras for any sign of this five-foot 120-pound fugitive >> thank you, george. we have a lot more to get to take a look. american teen sensation coco gauff ending 33-year-old caroline wozniacki's run after her nearly four-year absence

westbound interstate 80 are still closed because of a major repaving project. the closure started thursday night between interstate 780 in vallejo and highway 4 in hercules. caltrans says all lanes will reopen by 5:00 tomorrow morning, just in time to get back to work. workers are tearing up the old asphalt and repaving the roadway in what amounts to a complete facelift. caltrans says teams are compressing more than 100 nights of work by doing it over one long holiday weekend. a chp motorcycle officer is recovering in the hospital after a crash in downtown san francisco. it happened yesterday afternoon south of market near the corner of 3rd and harrison streets. you can see the bike there. it collided with a car. the chp says the driver of the car also was hospitalized. the cause is still under investigation. so far, we're waiting on an update on the officer's specific injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

dangerous turn a party in mexico ending in tragedy when a plane suddenly crashed to the ground. the latest example of a gender reveal gone wrong. the terrifying moments caught on camera as a gender reveal party in san pedro, mexico turned deadly a small plane flying passed the parents to be, letting them know a baby girl is on the way. but seconds late e just as the crowd begins to celebrate, the aircraft suddenly shoots up. its left wing appears to give out and crashing into the ground the expecting couple and other party goers seemingly unaware what was happening above them. photos showing the mangled person inside the plane. he died on the way to the hospital. >> just get the cake next time aircraft as emergency responders arrived on the scene the local authorities telling nbc news the pilot was the only person inside the plane. he died on the way to the hospital. >> just get the cake next time and stop with these stunts. >> reporter: this isn't the first time a gender reveal has gone horribly wrong. in 2021, new york state police

died after a device he was building for a gender reveal exploded a year earlier in california, over labor day weekend, authorities say a smoke generating devic used during a gender reveal ignited the eldorado wild fire, destroying 20,000 acres an forcing tens of thousands to evacuate a similar story back in 2017 when an expectant father shot his rifle at a target packed with an explosive power in a dry, grassy area in arizona. according to officials, that single gunshot sparked a massive brush fire that took firefighters weeks to control. the blaze resulting in $8 million in damages this latest fatality yet another cautionary tale that some of these celebrations continue to get out of control authorities say no one else was injured. it is unclear what caused that

wing to give out meanwhile, experts say think safety first when celebrating your baby. >> thank you, erin. also this morning there is a new twist in the suspected gilgo beach serial killer case the fbi is looking into a possible connection between the long island architect accused of multiple murders and a south carolina woman who has been missing for six years. maggie vespa has the details on this one good morning >> reporter: yeah. the ripple effects of this murder case now, as you said, traveling hundreds of miles after a south carolina sheriff received a tip that a local woman missing since 2016 mayal to a missing have been seen with th suspected killer shortly before she vanished this morning, a potential link to a missing south carolina mom, the latest jaw dropping layer. investigators with south carolina's sheriffs office

posting this photo of julia ann bean who has been missing for more than six years. this after they say someone claiming to be her friend came forward saying there could be a link to suspected long island serial killer, rex heuermann bean's daughter telling authorities th last time she saw her mother she was with a man driving a vehicle similar to one that's been linked to heuermann. cameron bean telling nbc news, i saw her the night before my graduation she didn't come, which was definitely something that was out of character for her adding we suspected the gilgo beach suspect could resemble the man she was last seen with right now south carolina investigators say there is no concrete evidence. >> thus far, the connection is zero we have hearsay. we have supposition. but whether or not that man was rex heuermann, we have yet to be able to determine. >> reporter: but they have passed the new information to the fbi.

>> just because we want so badly to find the whereabouts of miss julia bean does no mean we could presuppose anything we have to operate in the world of facts. >> reporter: this is just the latest twist in the investigation into the gilgo beach murders. since 2010, at least 11 bodies have been discovered on or near gilgo beach. heuermann has been charged with the murders of three women, al killed over a decade ago, adding the 59-year-old has been linked to the disappearance of a fourth heuermann, a husband, father and career architect has pleaded not guilty >> he's a man that's never been arrested before. he maintained his innocence from the inception of this case microscope several states away. >> reporter: his attorney at this point noting that they have no res >> reporter: a case that's coming under a new microscope several states away. rex heuermann is being held without bail his attorney or reps for his attorney noting they have no response to this new possible south carolina connection. it is also worth noting that his attorney has said in the past that there is no talk of a plea

i'm sure many folks did. i mentioned there will not be a whole lot of weather going on across the country one batch of storms trickled down from the north. this will hit new york city quickly, move through the northeast and move out the rest of the day, i promise, will be perfect but hot. we have a chance of widespread storms up across the northern plains, through north dakota and south dakota today we could see large hail and damaging winds tomorrow that threat pushes into the minneapolis area also across wisconsin where we could see stronger storms. this will also be the cold front that will drop temperatures from 90s back down into 70s and 80s it will make things more seasonable but it comes with wet weather through the afternoon and go i afternoon and evening. that will continue to wash out as we get into the end of this week when temperatures drop as happy labor day to you.

heat illness in padded sports like football. it is a combination of when it's hot outside and it gets humid. the body cools itself by sweating but when it is hot and humid together, that's called the heat index. we brought along a table to show everybody of what the heat index looks like it is interesting because that the purple, temperature does not have to be especially hot. meaning it could be humid and a little hot if your body can't evaporate the sweat, you could get this. it could be muscle cramping and they could feel out of it and then it could become more serious from there it is important to recognize right away. >> guys, i'm going to ask you to take off your helmet for the next part. this is crazy because didn't know this is a thing, but pickle juice. >> get those pads off. get some ice on the back of your net. for prevention, hydration sports drink and pickle juice. great for muscle cramps. >> you think it's gatorade, but it is actually pickle juice.

something you're thankful for. >> exactly once you get out of bed after you're grateful, i would like you to make the bed. we heard this many times but really the purpose of this is so when the day is over and you come back home, you know you did something right. you accomplished something, no matter what happens throughout the day, you accomplished something good >> and then last but not least in the morning, movement. >> a lot of us work out in the morning, the afternoon, the night. you can still do that. if you are not working out or going to the gym in the morning, i would love to see 5 to 10 minutes of movement. stretching, walking to the mailbox to get your mail a quick walk around the block. last time i was here i said i love sunlight. that's a great thing >> if we could do this every morning, we would be in business let's talk about during the day some things we could do. again movement, right? >> there is a theme here i love movement throughout the day. again, working out the fabulous. that 45-minute workout class but the small movements throughout the day.

>> and a lot of people aren't working out 45 minutes they may sit at a desk or walk to the water cooler, but what else can they do >> yes it is more important for them to walk throughout the day. check your mail in the middle of the day. getting up to talk to a coworker if you are in an office setting. walk to the bus stop rather than drive there. >> it feels like it's a trend, everybody is checking their steps these days next is hydration. >> yeah. so hydration, a lot of us think how much water should i drink throughout the day to keep it easy and simple, 8 ounce glass of water once an hour and you are probably doing a good job and then for fuel, i love protein. it is hard to measure how much protein to be eating, what's my physical activity? things like that every time you sit down to eat, i would say add protein. >> okay. >> so here are a bunch of great protein snacks breakfast, you can add protein more easily. but snacks are hard. we are on the go we don't have time to sit down and have a snack love over easy bars. >> i never heard of these. they're delicious. >> yeah.

they keep you satiated for longer. >> how many snacks do you do a day? >> depends how hungry i am i don't restrict, but i make sure there is protein in it. that's smart i'm a snacker. i sneneed to snack smarter. last but not least, before we go to bed, let's talk about that for health and wellness. >> yes a consistent bedtime. >> usually around 9:30 you know. >> that's great. i love that. on the days you are not working, the night before, when do you go to bed >> i try to keep it consistent sometimes i stay up until 11:00. >> that's still consistent in this context i like to say keep your bedtime within an hour or two, two hours is good, if you're working or not or on vacation otherwise you're essentially jet lagging yourself those people working 9:00 to 5:00, they wake up monday morning and they're so tired, that's because we stayed up

until 3:30 on saturday night if you are going to the steam, gym, set out the workout gear, the sneakers don't leave the kitchen washing and dish washing for the next morning. do it the night before do not feel overwhelmed and rushed in the morning. >> this is a big one for adults and kids. the no screen time at night you mean? >> yeah, this is tough so if you can avoid the tv, the social media on your phone, you're better off. it is overwhelming if you get an e-mail right before you close your eyes and it is stressful and it disrupts your sleep so if you can grab a book or maybe a meditation or remembering those gratitude moments, you're way better off. >> listen, if we can do all the things we just talked about, we will be in business. will be in business. thank you.
