messages. >> right now at 11:00, antioch police officers and even the chief expected to testify today about a spring of racist text messages that could force courts to overturn a lot of cases. plus -- ♪ i left my heart in san francisco ♪ a music icon takes his final bow. tony bennett dies at the age of 96. a look back at his life, legacy, and how san francisco is remembering the music legend. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. i'm scott mcgrew. laura and marcus are off. before we get to the tom stories, moments ago a heat advisory went into effect in parts of the bay area. we begin with meteorologist kari hall. and this just went into place, right? >> right. this is for the interior valleys across parts of the bay area. i want to show you a map so you know whether or not you're

included. this will be in effect from now through 11:00 on sunday as our temperatures heat up anywhere from 90 degrees to 104. but we're also going to see lower humidity and increased fire danger, so during these hottest hours of the day, make sure you're drinking lots of water and taking care of yourself as well as pets. take a look at the range in temperatures here. we're still in the 50s in san francisco, but when you go to the north bay, it's in the upper 70s. and the farther you go inland, the hotter it is already at this hour. we're at 82 in martinez and 91 in vacaville. we're already seeing some low 80s in san martin. when you compare the temperatures now to yesterday at this time, it's up to 16 degrees warmer at this hour than yesterday, so the heat is ramping up. we're also getting some drifts of smoke coming in, so we are monitoring the air quality as ozone and pollution is added to the smoke that we're already seeing. so we'll talk more about this

and how hot get v it gets for the weekend coming up in the full microclimate to forecast. santa clara county is opening up cooling shelters across the south bay. san mateo county reminds residents they can shelter in libraries in alameda county. if you want toearly. an exercise physiologist advises prehydrating, that is drinking water from the time you wake up, not waiting until you're hot, thirsty, or sweaty. the held of the cdc is highlighting how the agency is working with local governments to respond to the extreme heat communities are feeling across the country. >> we're seeing for the first time where folks are designating someone as, you know, in charge of responding to the heat. >> now, signs of heat exhaustion, someone may feel faint or dizzy pop you may see excessive sweating, pale and

clammy skin or a weak pulse. the signs of heat stroke are throbbing headache, no sweating, hot and dry skin, possibly a strong pulse, and even loss of consciousness. if you see those symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. our nbc bay area app a good way to keep track of the heat and stay safe. download and get personalized forecasts for your neighborhood. our other top story, singer tony bennett has died at the age of 96. tributing pouring in from all over the world. one of the most significant places in mr. bennett's decorated career is the fairmont hotel in san francisco. that's where nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is live this morning. there's a growing memorial i can see. >> reporter: that's right, scott. you can see behind us that statue of mr. bennett in the front lawn of the fairmont in san francisco. this hotel a special place for him and his career.

he sang "i left my heart in san francisco" for the very first time back in 1961 at the venetian ballroom here at this hotel. this hotel has also had a partnership with mr. bennett throughout the years, one of the suites being named after him. and this part of mason street, the intersection of california and mason in san francisco, renamed to tony bennet way several years ago. now, the song "i left my heart in san francisco" has become an unofficial anthem of sorts for the city but one of just many hits in his career. that career began when he signed with columbia records back in 1950, and it had spanned over 70 years. mr. bennett received 20 grammy awards, including the grammy lifetime achievement award, two emmy awards, and he was also named the kennedy center honoree. his last public concert performances were held at radio city music hall on august 3rd and 5th in celebration of his 95th birthday.

he was diagnosed with alzheimer's disease back in 2016. he is survived by his wife, susan, his two sons, danny and dave bennett, his daughters, joanna bennett and antonia bennett, and nine grandchildren. now, tony bennett's passing is personally felt by some staff here at the fairmont who had the pleasure of meeting him. one of those people we spoke to is a spokesperson for the fairmont. she says that his energy, the number of times that she had met him, was infectious. >> i was really, really upset. i had the great pleasure of meeting mr. bennett on a number of occasions, got to hear him perform in the venetian room about 15 years ago. and what an amazing man. what a legend. >> what stood out to you? >> his presence. he filled a room. he had charm. he was sophisticated. and he was a very, very kind man.

stoor it was in 2016 when this statue was doed ded kated to tony bennett and the street was renamed also. you're looking at video from that ceremony. but the other bit of news on this midday not long from now, those around san francisco will be hearing mr. bennett's "i left my heart in san francisco" over p.a. systems across the city at noon. that song will be playing here at the fairmont as well as other hotels around the downtown area who have been asked to participate as well. they'll also be playing at city hall and some san francisco-ans are also asking if you want to take part, go ahead and play that song at 12:00 noon as a tribute to mr. bennett. even just driving by, scott, we have heard people yell out, "i love you, tony." a lot of tourists and people taking pictures and selfies today. it will be as i imagine continuing to grow. one of the icons gone today. in san francisco, ginger

conejero saab. >> i was going to say -- >> nbc bay area. >> appreciate it. it's a nice gesture. many people this midday reacting to bennett's life throughout the legacy of san francisco. the giants saying, "the team is saddened to hear the loss of tony bennett, a true legend whose music will live in on at oracle park. we cher risch his memory and the memories and friendship of many visits. we'll remember him for leaving his heart in san francisco. our deepest condolences to his family." mayor london breed said, "from the first day he sung i left my heart in san francisco at the hotel, through all the decades since, tony bennett, the love for this city is shared by all san francisco-ans. we honor his memory and his legacy that will stay with us forever." as you can imagine, fan reaction pouring in, many people going online to remember the legendary life and career.

more than just a vocalist, he was a serious painter. his works have sold more as much as $40,000. other news, expected testimony in the antioch police racist text messaging scandal was delayed, but in the meantime, people are calling for accountability outside a rally outside the courthouse. nbc bay area's kris sanchez has what they want and what we expect to hear once that testimony begin ps. >> as many as 15 antioch police officers and even the police chief could take the stand today in that corruption case against the department. ahead of that testimony, antioch residents and community members rallied outside the courthouse still shocked by the text messages that first surfaced back in april and continued to come to light as recently as this week. >> kind of like the rodney king video. when that came out, everybody got to see what a lot of people already knew what was happening. members of antioch, myself

included, knew what the conduct was of the and i don't care police but it's finally exposed and in the light for everyone to see. >> angela, who died in ant i don't care police custody, a relative says the text messages will cast doubt by any investigations by the department and that could mean some people who should be prosecuted may walk free. >> i think it's very clear, especially through these text messages, not only that they were sent and received but even sitting on so many officers' phones for so long, that this is a culture of prejudice and dehumanization that is rampant within that department. >> chief steven ford was subpoenaed to testify in the case, though he abruptly announced his retirement on wednesday, just nine months after he was hired for that top job. he will remain in office only about three more weeks. the contra costa district attorney's office, california attorney general rob bonta, and the fbi are all investigating

the antioch police department. members of reimagine antioch want officers in question fired but also want them decertifies do they cannot be hired by other police departments anywhere else, and they want consistent police oversight. our colleague jodi hernandez is in the courtroom this morning and will continue our coverage on nbc bay area later today. scott? >> kris, thank you. just into our newsroom, alameda police are investigating the discovery of human remains. investigators say they were found yesterday along the shoreline near bay farm island bridge. they're investigating how they got there and not releasing any other detail. anyone who can assist, please call alameda pd. a federal judge has set the trial date for former president trump tied to his charges of mishandling classified documents. the trial will begin may 20th of next year, a little less than six months before the presidential election. defense lawyers asked for a

delay until after the fall of the election because trump is a presidential candidate, but there's no law or legal precedent for such an argument. happening this afternoon, santa rosa breaks ground on a new firestation wiped out six years ago in a devastating firestorm. here's video from that. the tubbs fire. the city lost its firestation in 2017. santa rosa mayor natalie rogers, north bay congressman mike tompson will take part in today's groundbreaking, 11:30 -- correction, 1:30 this afternoon on fountaingrove parkway and stagecoach road. and the women's world cup now in full swing. earlier this morning, spain dismantled costa rica 3-0. later today, the two-time defending champs will take the field. that would be team usa taking on vietnam. the u.s. squad is looking to make history. they could be the first team ever to win three straight world cup titles.

welcome back. we have a live look at sfo. a disruptive passenger forced a plane bound for asia to turn and go back to sfo yesterday afternoon. united says it started about two hours into the flight for taiwan. that's when pilots turned back for sfo. after landing, police took that passenger into custody. we're still trying to understand what that passenger said or did, but the plane later resumed its voyage last night. disgraced former crypto king sam bankman-fried is facing new legal action from attorneys at the exchange he once led. he pleaded not guilty to bilking billions of dollars from

investorors in that exchange to help cover losses in a separately owned hedge fund. ftx attorneys are seeking to recover money they say was misappropriated before the exchange went bankrupt. their suit in bankruptcy court also claims he is financing his criminal defense with some of that money. a representative for sam bankman-fried refused to comment. a follow-up this midday for swifties out there. you can get your friendship bracelets and wear them next week when taylor swift brings her highly anticipated heiress tour to levi's stadium. yesterday those homemade bracelets were banned from the show, but now there's a new tweet. the venue reversing course. it follows backlash from fans planning to attend. fans trade friendship bracelets with other swifties. proceedings fall pickleball

is taking over oracle park. this is video of our own ginger conejero saab playing pickleball this morning ahead of two professional exhibition sessions happening today. it's all part of oracle park's inaugural pickle for ballpark series this weekend. the tournament kicked off yesterday. it's stepping into high swing today. it's got professionals, including the number one female pickleball player in the u.s. here's joey nevin, vice president of giants enterprises, who commented on the sport. >> we consider oracle park to be a community clubhouse of sorts so we listened to our fans, listened to folks in the bay area. there's no denying the popularity of pickleball. we wanted to find a way to bring it to the ballpark, and we've got an great response so far this weekend and looking forward to some court play tomorrow and then the amateur competition on sunday. >> tickets are available starting at $10 and $20 for the professional exhibition today.

non-pro players can rent out surrounding courts this weekend for about $1,500. remember, you can split that with your friends. a live look at oakland this midday, a spare-the-air alert is issued today because of the smoke. you see the smoky sunset we had yesterday. it was drifting down from oregon. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the air and the heat wave. >> the sunset looks beautiful but at the same time you're, like, should i be breathing this in? it's wildfire smoke coming down. and we're seeing the hazy sky all across the bay area. take a look at this shot from san jose. usually we can clearly see the hills behind downtown, but because of the lower visibility, oh, it's not as clear as we typically see. so, yes, this is coming from wildfire smoke, but we also at the time have more ozone in the air as well as whatever pollutants we are putting out

there being mixed in and pushed down by this high pressure. but we also have this northerly wind, and this is a look at the near surface smoke model where we're seeing the smoke coming from a fire in southwestern oregon, moving into the bay area. it's been happening for days. but at times, those plumes of smoke get a little bit more intense, and that's what we are experiencing for today. now, our temperatures are spreading out. so definitely microclimates with highs in pacifica heading for mid-60s. san jose will be just a little warmer compared to yesterday with a high of 89. brentwood will reach a high today of 105 degrees. so really dependent on where you are as to what kind of weather you're dealing with for today across the bay area. we continue to talk about the heat wave that's been hitting the south and the southwest. phoenix just getting hotter every day, and they've had such a long stretch of these extreme temperatures. today they're headed for 119

degrees, so that's still making a lot of headlines there. every now and then that heat starts to nudge its way into the bay area, causing our temperatures to go up. but at least we do still have the cool coastal air. we're looking for some things to do, where those temperatures are lower. later on this afternoon, you'll be able to check out steph curry's movie at thrives in san francisco. only going to be in the upper 60s there. temperatures drop quickly, especially with the wind picking up. i do think a lot of people will make the beach their destination this weekend, escaping that valley heat. look at our highs throughout the weekend. monterey will be in the upper 50s and the clouds and fog will keep those temperatures down a lot lower compared to brentwood, once again hitting 105. that's the hotspot around the bay area. but it does get a little better for early next week. we'll bring you back to some more seasonable temperatures, upper 80s and low 90s there while a lot of our inland valleys will see those temperatures coming down to the 80s next week.
