guthrie and hoda kotb. from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody welcome to "today. it's a busy thursday morning happy you're joining us. you ready for the long weekend >> so ready. in fact, let's just go to the beach right now. sunny isles beach, florida look at that we've a full look at the holiday forecast, traffic, travel, everything you've got to know, just ahead we are also going to have the very latest just ahead on a major story affecting every single american's bottom line. there is one week left in the debt negotiations before the deadline, and despite some progress there is still no deal on the table this deadline is getting very close and very real. now, a top u.s. rating agency is threatening to lower the nation's perfect credit rating something that would lead to among other things, higher car, home, credit payments. one analytic firm said it would be financial armageddon if we were to default on our debt. more on that in a moment >> yeah, we are.

we are going to start with the passing of tina turner, this iconic singer known as the queen of rock 'n' roll passed away yesterday. she was 83 years old >> tributes from fans and fl low musicians rolling in overnight from a star whose 60-year career included 12 grammys and two inductions into the rock & roll hall of fame >> angela bassett, who famously plaid tina in "what's love got to do with it? posted this -- "she gave us more than we ever asked she gave us her whole self and tina turner is a gift that will always be simply the best." joe fryer joins us now with a look back at one remarkable life >> good morning, hoda, savannah. her publicist said tina turner died peacefully at her home in switzerland. after retiring from touring and performing in 2009, she kept a fairly low profile while battling a number of health problems, and this morning, some of the biggest names in music are paying tribute to a captivating performer who was simply the best. ♪ you're simply the best ♪

it was a notoriously abusive relationship, one that tina eventually escaped, something she reflected on in a recent hbo documentary. >> i had an abusive life there's no other way to tell the story. >> reporter: but during appearances on "today," she also spoke about overcoming her painful past >> let go, forget the blame. take it on as something happened, you're finished with it, and focus a little bit more on doing something rather than feeling sorry for yourself >> reporter: the '80s brought a whole new chapter for tina, who reinvented herself as a solo act, winning a pile of grammys, even starring in a blockbuster movie, "mad max: beyond thunderdome," which featured another one of her hit songs ♪ we don't need another hero ♪ her life was the subject of a movie, "what's love got to do with it? later a broadway musical, simply titled "tina." a career so sweeping, she was inducted into the rock 'n' roll

that she was her number one singer at oprah's 50th birthday party. she was surprised by tina turner and was practically on her knees. beyonce, when she met tina for the first time, lost it. like, when you think about the generations that she influenced. >> and trailblazing, 1967, first female to ever be on the cover of "rolling stone," also the first black artist to be on the cover of "rolling stone. i was at the grammys in 2008, their 50th anniversary, when tina brought out beyonce it was very much this passing of the guard, as they did "proud mary." she was described as an absolute hurricane on stage and really owes a lot to mick jagger mick jagger took them out in 1966 in england when ike and tina weren't getting that kind of audience and also in '69. >> and when you think about all the hell she went through with her husband and how it did not define her, and she ended up being incredible and even afterwards >> and into the movies in the '80s really a terrible loss >> thank you, carson in a little bit, we'll celebrate tina turner throughout the morning, including her many visits here on "today.

we'll also have a special conversation with one of the star's backup singers. you will recognize her she's an actress as well >> pretty incredible now let's get to the tense debt limit negotiations, with a race to avoid a government default now less than a week away while there is a new word of progress between the white house and republicans, the two sides do remain far apart. >> and this morning there are new warnings, disturbing ones from the treasury secretary and the leading economic firms on dire consequences that could be triggered by a default a top u.s. rating agency now is threatening to lower the nation's perfect aaa credit rating this is a move that would lead everyone to pay more on home and car loans, home, and credit card loans. the list goes on >> let's unpack this with kristen welker and business reporter, brian chung. what would it mean if this, in fact, did happen >> we need to talk about what a credit rating is it's a grade for how the united states government is able to pay its bills in full and on time. now, fitch ratings has said that

the united states rating is sterling it's a aaa but they say that could be in jeopardy if they get past that june 1st deadline without a resolution, which would call into question very much the creditworthiness of the world's largest economy. >> this is an economic story assist political story, kristen, you're here for that i was so struck by some of the words in which fitch said. it said, the contested 2020 presidential election, brinksmanship over the debt limit, to advance political agendas and failure to reach consensus on the country's fiscal challenges are recent signs of the deterioration in governance these are outside observers saying the u.s. government is not working and blaming partisans on both sides. it's pretty stunning >> and i talked to republican and democratic sources overnight, savannah and hoda, and they say, this is an alarm bell essentially because of that strong warning about the partisan bickering and because of all of the implications for the american economy we saw finger pointing overnight, a source close to speaker mccarthy saying the

white house should have negotiated sooner. the white house saying this adds new urgency. look at the polls. 71% saying that they are very or seriously concerned about a potential default. so this is very serious for americans who are paying attention to this all across the country. notably, i spoke to former obama administration officials remember, this happened during his presidency, 2011 we came close to the brink then. one official said bluntly, this is bad they said, this could be a political hit all across the board if this doesn't get resolved very soon >> a political hit an economic hit, a profound one, brian. and totally self-inflected i mean, that's what's striking about this this is essentially a manufactured crisis, when you go to the brink of the debt ceiling. we have spending problems in this country, we've got budget problems in this country but this moment does not have to unfold like this >> and i've been in touch with economists, who they don't chime in on policy really ever when i asked them, what is going to be the economic outcome of this, they say, look, first of all, this is self-inflicted.

this is politics this concerns a mechanism in congress that doesn't have anything to do with spending and funding. that's a whole separate process. it's about paying the bills we've already racked up. and a lot of economists say, why do we have a debt ceiling at all. that's something that a lot of other countries don't. so to hear those on wall street saying those things, that is very much an interesting and notable thing that's part of this story as well >> one week to go. let's hope they do somehow reach a deal thank you very much, brian and kristen. appreciate it. let's turn now to the 2024 presidential race and florida governor ron desantis making his highly anticipated run official. but that long-awaited announcement on twitter did not go off without a hitch, crashing the site and leaving the campaign scrambling on day one nbc national correspondent gabe gutierrez joins us from miami. hey, gabe, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. governor desantis' team is

trying to brush this all off, saying that their candidate broke the internet but other campaign launches on youtube and traditional outlets typically have millions of eyeballs this launch had several hundred thousand listeners so former president trump is having a field day, blasting the unusual campaign launch and calling it a disaster. >> i'm ron desantis, and i'm running for president. >> reporter: this morning, a very rocky rollout governor ron desantis' team trying to recover after a glitchy start to his campaign. >> sorry about that. we've got so many people here that i think we are -- we are kind of melting the servers. >> reporter: desantis claiming he, quote, broke the internet, but the audio-only chat with billionaire elon musk plagued be technical troubles >> there's so many people. that's unfortunate i've never seen this before. >> frustration heard on hot mics >> it keeps crashing >> the live stream cutting out and the event delayed for nearly a half hour, before finally -- >> i am running for president of

the united states to lead our great american comeback. >> reporter: overnight, desantis brushing it off. >> it did break the twitter space, and so we're really excited with the enthusiasm. >> reporter: arguing he's the best choice to take on president biden. >> you've got to be able to win, and then when you get in office, you've got to be able to deliver results. >> reporter: but his critics could hardly contain their delight, especially former president trump, slamming the twitter announcement as a disaster, even president biden tweeting a fund-raising page, dryly pointing out, "this link works. with the race in its infancy, governor desantis trails mr. trump, the gop front-runner, by more than 25 points in many polls, but desantis is well ahead of any other potential challengers for now. >> he's just an echo of trump. i mean, i think that's not what the american people want to see. >> reporter: in miami, a group

of protesters gathered he spoke with one of his supporters in the room as the glitches unfolded. >> because of the glitches, in hindsight, should he have stuck with a more traditional announcement >> i don't think so. i think it's who governor desantis is. look, he's a bold leader who's willing to try new things and he's not just going to do the cookie-cutter approach >> all right so, i guess governor desantis needs to bounce back what's his plan? >> well, hoda, governor desantis is set to meet with donors and fund-raisers in miami later today. despite the glitch, his campaign raised more than a million dollars in that first hour and governor desantis is now planning to head to campaign events across the country next week, beginning tuesday in iowa. hoda >> gabe gutierrez for us on that story. gabe, thank you. the arkansas man who was photographed on january 6th with his feet up on nancy pelosi's desk was sentenced yesterday he got 4 1/2 years in prison richard barnette was convicted in january on eight charges stemming from the 2021 capitol

attack, including entering a restricted building with a deadly weapon. he was considered a symbol of the riot with this photo with his feet propped up. government officials say he was armed with a stun device and a ten-pound steel pole all right. we've got 16 minutes past the hour got some important health news >> good morning, savannah, hoda. we know that americans love their vitamins in fact, more than a third of all adults take one, but their benefits have long been debated. and a new study is stirring up this conversation once again, finding that taking a daily multivitamin could slow memory loss nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar is here with more and i think we should probably point out, initially, we're talking about age-related memory loss, not memory loss connected to dementia or alzheimer's, but how significant is this particular study what did they find >> it's very important is it going to be practice changing today, maybe not, but nonetheless, very interesting and very important

as you said, the takeaway here is if you're over the age of 60 and take a multivitamin every day, it could slow down your age-related loss of memory, more specifically, midfield recall. the authors say it could be the equivalent of about three years of memory loss that is saved and what's super interesting about this, even more than that, is that it was a well-designed study and it kind of piggy backs on another study that was reported in the fall, similar findings and we love nothing more in science than when we can replicate findings this is what these authors did here >> they say a multivitamin, the cumulative effect of all of these vitamins or are they looking to single out which one addresses this memory loss issue? >> so we have a picture for our viewers to take a look so, the multi-vitamin contains so many different things they highlighted a couple of different vitamins and nutrients that they think are probably the most important, including

vitamin a, d-3, b-12, thiamine and riboflavin and manganese >> if you want to give it a go, is there one in particular they think it works best? >> the study used centrum, a name we're all familiar with, but they say any good quality vitamin will do. how do you know if it's a good quality vitamin? the fda doesn't regulate supplements. look for this label, it validates what's on the label. avoid megadoses, if you're taking a multi and a lot of extra "d" on the side, be aware of that, and look for age and gender-related differences premenopausal and postmenopausal have different requirements. but nonetheless, larger, longer studies are certainly needed but this is an interesting one you know, multivitamin studies up and down, this is a day for it to be up. >> all right >> thank you >> thank you so much

>> like the stock market >> thank you so much we've got dylan in for al this morning, our first check of the weather. >> good morning, everyone. nice to see you on this thursday morning. we do have a storm system that's been meandering off the southeast coast for quite some time, making things a bit unsettled. this slow-moving area of low pressure will continue to do that as we head into the upcoming weekend while it's not pouring every single second, sometimes you get these heavier downpours across florida, through georgia and into north and south carolina. and when you get those downpours, you end up with a lot of rain in a short period of time as we go into tonight, we'll see the rain fill in across the charleston and wilmington area, cape hatteras. and it will try to lift farther north into virginia, maryland, parts of west virginia and delaware, too. we could end up with about 3 to 5 inches of rain if you get stuck in some of those heavier downpours across the southeast into the upcoming weekend. that's a look at the weather acrossss the countntry we'll get to your forecast in the next 3 30 seconds.s.

of a mixed bag the good news, for sure, gas is down here in chicago, it's $4.79 for a gallon of regular. the national average is $3.57. think back to a year ago it's now down more than $1 from where it was last memorial day that being said, you might experience some traffic on the roads. close to 37 million people are expecting to drive this holiday weekend. but we have some tips, of course, to avoid the worst of it avoid essentially getting out on the road tomorrow if you can that's when traffic should be at its heaviest it should lighten up saturday and sunday if you can postpone, that's a good idea. experts recommend traveling in the morning or the evening, regardless of which day you hit the road, because congestion every day, they say, will be at its worst between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. and of course, if you're one of the 3.4 million americans planning to fly this memorial day weekend, the gold standards always hold true definitely get to the airport early, at least two hours ahead of time and download the airline's app also ahead of time as well. basically, good advice if you

want to get somewhere warmer than chicago and not have to wear a coat like this for the holiday weekend. back to you. >> oh, i know, putting a coat on this time of year just doesn't feel right maggie, thank you. what will you face when you arrive at your holiday destination. nbc's sam brock is poolside for us in hollywood, florida that's like trolling how busy are pools and beaches supposed to get? >> reporter: i've given up feeling bad about this there's no guilt here. you're not going to find a lot of jackets down here in florida. the beaches are expected to be slammed, as families really excited about celebrating the unofficial start of summer now, if you look at a recent survey from the vacationer, more than 60% of people polled said they are planning to travel for the holiday weekend. about 50% say they intend on being near a body of water, whether that's a beach or a lake and if you look at aaa's top destinations for the holiday, no surprise here, miami,

orlando, new york city top the list all of those are locations within close proximity to a shoreline. as far as the top beaches are concerned, florida's gulf coast, number one maui, hawaii, as well, and hilton head, south carolina. i'm sure craig will appreciate that >> god's country no surprise there. >> god's country that train is never late you know, the nation is facing a lifeguard shortage i think you've covered that for us before, sam is that still going on >> reporter: not only is it going on, savannah, it's more pronounced the american lifeguard association said this is now a full-blown crisis. there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300,000 public pools nationally and more than half of them will be closed down or have reduced hours because of inadequate staffing. that's a shocking figure when you consider the fact that a year ago, it was only about a third. i'm in the city of hollywood at a community pool they're a microcosm of what so many communities are going through right now. they have ten people on staff, they need 20, and are scaling back on some of the instruction on kids. as far as tips are concerned

this weekend for you and your family, the most important to keep in mind, do not swim at a beach if there is no lifeguard and there should be a designation. it will obvious if that's the case designate a water watcher, someone to look out for the group to see if anyone's in trouble. and bring life jackets and flotation devices if you plan on being anywhere near water. safety no doubt paramount as you're enjoying what's going to be a glorious weekend here in florida and across the country >> will it be glorious all across the country we'll find out, miss dryer >> i just showed you it's probably going to rain, but let's show you some of the good stuff. nothing but sunshine in boston, saturday, sunday, monday temperatures in the 70s and 80s, new york mix of clouds in the 70s d.c., you're kind of right on that line where that storm is going to kind of stall out so you might see some showers sunday and monday. not a total washout. let's go back to chicago, where maggie was
