negotiations with republicans as the june 1st deadline to avoidts for more on this we go to nbc's brie jackson in washington good morning what has happened in the leadup to this latest meeting >> reporter: good morning, phillip. on sunday house speaker kevin mccarthy announced that he would have his next meeting with president biden on the debt ceiling on monday. now, this comes after a call between the two leaders as president biden was returning from the g7 in japan mccarthy told nbc news that the call was productive and that he believes they can solve some of the problems that they face. the most recent meeting between the white house and congressional leaders on this issue was last tuesday the parties expressed confidence over a deal getting done before the june 1st deadline for the u.s. to default on its debt obligations and negotiators from both president biden and speaker mccarthy's teams have been meeting while the president was overseas while he was still in japan on sunday president biden voiced criticisms of the gop's position

in this ongoing battle, saying that the party needs to accept that there won't be a bipartisan deal made solely on their terms. these negotiations have been hamstrung over disagreements on cuts to spending in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. >> brie, what consequences are we talking about if this doesn't get done by june 1st >> reporter: treasury secretary janet yellen appeared on "meet the press" on nbc on sunday and reinforced the hard deadline of june 1st for raising the debt ceiling. here is what she had to say about the potential effects. >> my assumption is that if the debt ceiling isn't raised, there will be hard choices to make about what bills go unpaid. >> reporter: now, yellen did not specify what bills that she might have to -- or she might have been referring to, but added that there can be no acceptable outcomes if the debt ceiling is not raised. >> all right

u.s. immigration officials say an 8-year-old girl who died in border patrol custody last week was seen by medical personnel at least three times before she was taken to a hospital on the day of her death. the mother of the panamanian born girl had previously said that authorities ignored their pleas for care and didn't act until it was too late. the child suffered from heart problems and sickle cell anemia and died last wednesday after suffering a medical emergency. it marked the second death in two weeks of a migrant child in government custody in a statement cbp said it knew about the girl's medical history when they began the treatment. while acting commissioner troy miller said he has ordered new steps for care for medically fragile people in custody. two parents are in custody after the death of their 2-year-old daughter who they allegedly left in a hot car in purpose. the car was left in the car for 14 hours after the parents
