good evening. it's disbelief and relief in davis. a bay area native arrested and accused of a deadly stabbing spree in that college town. >> now that suspect is a former uc davis student. police initially detained 21-year-old carlos dominguez yesterday at sycamore park, which is one of the crime scenes near campus. police say a total of 15 people reported seeing him at that park. he was wearing the same clothes described by one witness of the attacks. officers also say they found a large hunting knife in his backpack, similar to the weapon used in the attacks. police believe he is responsible for three stabbings, two of them deadly. the first victim, 50-year-old david bro, found stabbed to death last thursday. tekd, student kareem najim who was stabbed and killed saturday. a third person, a homeless woman stabbed monday while sleeping in her tent. she is the sole survivor. >> tonight uc davis students and people who live in that community are relieved, but many

are shocked that the suspect someone of their peers. what do we know about carlos dominguez? high school in oakland but most recently college in davis. let's bring in stephanie magallon with more. stephanie? >> reporter: as you mentioned, we knew he grew up here in oakland with his parents and younger siblings. dominguez was also seen as star student by one of his mentors who is now wondering what happened. the days of terror may now be over. davis police say a man behind a series of brutal stabbings is now in custody. 21-year-old carlos dominguez known as a student athlete in the oakland community. >> bright kid, 3.le 5 gpa. he was involved in all the school activities. >> reporter: james barn says he coached dominguez for two seasons at castlemont high school where he also participated in track, soccer, and other volunteer opportunities. >> he was willing to learn and play where needed. wasn't that aggressive. so i didn't think he had an aggressive bone in him. >> reporter: coach describes him

as one of his quiet players who walked to school through east oakland's international, had parents who always volunteered and who were proud of their son graduating and eventually getting into uc davis, where police say dominguez terrorized the community after allegedly stabbing three people, killing at least two of them. >> i don't know where that comes from. i don't know if something happened, you know, between the time he left high school and the uc davis. >> reporter: officers detained dominguez tuesday after police say they received about 15 tips of a man wear walking near one of the scenes, wearing the same clothes described by witnesses in sunday's stabbing. >> i had called in a report while i was in the car, just saying that there was a person matching this description walking down the street. >> he was wearing a backpack. and in the backpack was a large knife that was consistent with one that we were looking for based on evidence from the first homicide. >> reporter: police spent the

day searching the suspect's home in davis where he lived with several roommates. >> it's insane to think we all walk our dogs, we walk to our friends' house, to think the guy lives five feet away from us. it's insane. >> reporter: in a statement, uc davis says dominguez was third year student at the university and was separated from the school last tuesday for academic reasons, just two days before the first stabbing. >> i've been part of a few cases of kids coming out of that area. i would never expect it of him. >> reporter: dominguez is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in yolo county. we did reach out to his family this evening, but we have not heard back yet. classes meanwhile at uc davis campus that were moved to virtual will be back in person on monday. raj, jes? >> thank you. paul losada says the next step is to do a deep dive to try to better understand carlos

as thom jensen tells us, the pressure is on with the rest of the school year in limbo, with more than 35,000 students, teachers, and their families. >> the best news that we can give to parents and students tonight that there are efforts to bring both sides into mediation to hammer out a deal. but there was no bargaining tonight. more than 3,000 union teachers and support staff get the picket lines in day one of the oakland teachers strike. >> oakland is a union town! >> her family joined the teachers on day one of the strike. >> oakland educators are raising the next generation of our youth in oakland. and we want them to stay in oakland. and we want them to stay in ousd. >> reporter: and she may join the teachers when they go back on the picket line in the morning. >> we're going to be in solidarity with them and support how ever we can. >> reporter: one of the lead negotiators for the teachers union says her team not only hasn't received a meaningful

contract proposal in writing, but they also just learned they've been bargaining with negotiators from the district who are powerless to finalize a deal. >> the school board has not given the ousd bargaining team the authority to settle this contract. so that's really frustrating to know that that's the case. we have been bargaining for seven months. why has this not been resolved. >> the state superintendent is now getting involved as he did when the two sides were at an impact in 2019. >> my job is to make sure that the conversation continues, that everyone is talking, and that we're looking at every single option for how to find some resolution. >> and four years ago when tony thurman got involved, they were able to come to an agreement after just 30 hours of mediation. in a statement tonight, ousd says its team has worked day and night trying to hammer out an agreement and felt they had, quote, closed the gap significantly, making an unprecedented compensation offer to our teacher, something the

district superintendent highlighted in a press conference this morning. >> we have made a historic offer to oea totalling nearly $70 million. >> reporter: the district says some of the things the union wants are too expensive or outside their authority. like ending student homelessness and transportation for all students. but one of the union's chief negotiators says those items are not sticking points that are holding up the talks. >> nothing is a sticking point yet because we haven't been able to bargain. i just want to make that clear. we're still trying to bargain. >> reporter: as for the students, schools will be opened again tomorrow, but no classes will be taking place. in oakland, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> now the strike is having a big impact on the students. one teacher we spoke to season who spent his day picketing outside said only seven students showed up today. normally there would be about 300 on the campus. some of the students joined the teach others tonight picket line, but shortly after staff members escorted them to the

library to wait for their parents to pick them up. you heard thom mention it. schools will be open tomorrow, but with no teachers, there will be no learning. > new videoeo tonight of t t protestt outside of that san francisco walgreens where banko brown was killed. last week a security guard shot and killed the 24-year-old who was accccused of shoplifting. the district attorney brook jenkins is not filing charges against the security guard. shshe said a after reviewining evidencece, she believes prosecutors would not be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. board of supervisors president aaron peskin is urging the d.a. to reconsider. new at 11:00, a deadly shooting in the city. it happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. police responded to reports of a shooting on eddy street between scott and divis in the western edition. officers arrived and found a man

anti-semitism at the uc santa cruz campus. the university says some students celebrated the birthday of adolf hitler. it happened a couple of weeks ago. the students apparently gathered to sing happy birthday and eat cake decorated with hate symbols. last friday, a student found an

anti-semitic and anti-lgbtq flr in downtown santa cruz. the university says it condemns both actions and is dealing with those involved in the on-campus party. a follow-up to a story we first brought you last night. another antioch police officer off the job over allegations of misconduct. tonight the city's mayor is weighing in. patrol officer matthew nutt fired for his use of force during a traffic stop last july. this comes after a months' long internal investigation. this is the same agency that's also mired in the fallout of a racist text messaging scandal involving dozens of officers. the department is now down to just 34 police officers on patrol. the mayor says it's frustrating. he is launching a crisis response team for nonviolent crimes to help address some of the issues around the city. >> great majority calls for service really have nothing to do with violent crime. and so the new crisis response team will be able to take a lot of the police department. >> we did reach out to the

antioch police officers association for a comment, but have yet to hear back. is there dangerous soil in contra costa county? the health department is starting to test the soil near the richmond refinery. last thanksgiving, a flaring event spread ash on surrounding neighborhoods. more recently, people were told not to eat what they grow in their gardens. here is nbc's sergio quintana in martinez. >> reporter: on thanksgiving day, wendy gomez was at her brother-in-law's home close to the martinez refinery when she saw the flaring. >> he lives up on the hill. so we had a pretty grade a view of the giant plume of smoke, thinking it was just another day associate the refinery. turns out it was much worse. >> reporter: residents started to find a thin layer of what looked like ash on their homes, cars and gardens. contra costa county health officials have since determined that ash was actually 20 tons of spent catalyst that was spewed into the air over several hours. the ash contains significant levels of potentially dangerous metals. today a team of people from a newly hired environmental consulting company began

collecting samples from around the area. they're on a mission to figure out if any of that spent catalyst powder could be a long-term health concern for residents. >> we're collecting, you know, enough soil. we're not just looking at that top inch. we're going half a foot down. >> reporter: the big concern has been a warning not to eat any homegrown fruits and vegetables. >> everyone is kind of waiting to hear whether it's safe to consume what they had still planting the best that they can. but ultimately trying not to eat anything if it could be hazardous. >> reporter: residents we talked with also voiced frustration with the refinery not effectively communicating what happened and how long it's taking to get any answers on safety in an incident that happened months ago. >> i mean, come on. november, there is december. january, february, march, april. we're now into may. how hard is it to test what exactly is in the soil? >> reporter: lab results from the soil sample collection should be available later in june. sergio quintana, nbc bay area

news. the south bay cal fire unit has a new weapon to help fight fires this season. it is a state-of-the-art $26 million converted black hawk helicopter you're looking at right there. our camera crew was the only one there to capture it as their fire crew practiced water rescues with the new chopper. it is three times more powerful than the single engine helicopter crews have been using. it's capable of carrying more firefighters and rescue equipment, and there is more. >> the ability to pull a lot of water at once and deliver multiple drops in the fire lines versus only one drop. >> and now the black hawk's newer technology means it could also fly in bad weather at night. so it's kind of feels strange to be talk about fire season. >> i know. >> when it's this cold and we're still rainy, but we all know at some point it will arrive. >> i think next 30 to 60 days, the moisture in the fuel out there is still going to be pretty good to keep our fire danger low, but then by late august and september, that's

when things could increase for us. right now on the doppler radar, we're actually getting into a little bit of a break. just some drizzle right here at the coastline. and even some partly cloudy skies up here into the north bay. and that is good because, check this out, we have a meteor shower happening overnight. the aquarian meteor shower, debris from the comet haley. we'll see some shooting stars, maybe even meteor fireballs here. those are moving at 148,000 miles per hour when they happen. they could actually leave a glow train and/or trail. i wanted to show you this. our viewer here in napa got an image of what looks to be one of those glow trains or trails from potentially a meteor fireball. this coming in from napa from erik barnes, a former nbc bay area video journalist back in the '90s. so thanks for that, eric. a big hello to you from all of us. and if you got any pictures, make sure to get ahold of us on twitter. let's take into it the microclimate forecast. and let me show you what's happening as we head through

tomorrow. and the storm system that's been bringing us some on and off rain chances since monday is now finally starting to move off towards the east. so as that exits, it will make room for another smaller system tomorrow and saturday moving just off to the north. so that's going to keep was a chance here with some rain, also more chilly temperatures. nothing big, but nothing of that nuisance activity where it's dry, and then all of the sudden we get a spotty shower. right here tomorrow morning mainly cloud cover, and a chance of a shower near the coast. and then as we head through tomorrow afternoon, here you can see a few of the pop-up showers here expected in the forecast with more of that cloud cover. temperatures to start for tomorrow on the chilly side. we're back down in the 40s again. we just can't get rid of this cold air. 49 in the peninsula. over to the north bay, we're dropping down to 46. daytime highs for tomorrow really don't budge a whole lot. we are going to see temperatures in the 60s, well below average.

mrs. feinstein faces calls from fellow democrats to resign after her hospitalization earlier this year. she has not cast a vote inhe senate san jose's mayor hit the streets today, rolling out a plan he hopes will make everyone feel safer downtown. the mayor and the police chief spent time checking in with business areas that have seen a spike in violence recently. for the past 18 month, four officers have spent their days walking through downtown to check in with businesses,

respond to calls for help. mayor mahan says he wants more of them, and he shaped a budget to add more officers. you can hear from the mayor, the police chief and business owners about the plan. you can watch the full story on our website, nbcbayarea.com. new at 11:00, that parking ticket on your windshield in san francisco might be a fake. the sfmta confirming today scammers have been leaving bogus tickets on cars across the city. instructing the drivers to pay immediately. be careful here. the ticket tells you to use a qr code to make your payment. but you're not paying the city, just the scammers. the sfmta says it's a good way to really check if the ticket is real, look it up online first. it should also have a blue logo on it and say sfmta at the top. that's a clever trick, they are crafty. carrie fisher has received a star on the hollywood walk of fame near the historic el capitan theater.

lineup after kevon looney felt a little under the weather a few hours before tip-off. it was the right move. jamichael scored 15 points while helping the warriors spread the floor and dominate in the paint. lebron james was feeling it early. he scored 14 of his 23 points in the first quarter. the lakers led by 7 after one, and klay thompson got hot. he dropped 14 of his team high 40 points in the second quarter. the warriors led by 11 at the break. the warriors shot 50% from behind the arc, including thompson going 8 of 11. the dubs blow it open with a 43-point third quarter. stephen curry had a dozen assists. anthony davis who dominated the paint in game one not a factor in game two. the warriors blow out the lakers 127-120 after a brilliant coaching move by steve kerr. >> he was great. he knocked down some threes, and he is aggressive and athletic.
