right now at 5:00, danger and chaos at an east bay side show. the alarming video that shows a big rig, you see it there in the middle of it all. people around the bay area are getting the most out of the snow before it melts away only to return. that's right. we have your hour-by-hour forecast and how long these frosty conditions are going to stick around. when someone tries to tell me that a black woman my age with all the experience i bring to the table can't win a fight, i just smile to myself and i say "watch me." >> campaign kickoff for

congresswoman barbara lee. latest in her efforts to win senator dianne feinstein's seat now that she's announced her retirement. the news at 5:00 starts right now. thanks for joining us. >> after some rare snowy days here in the bay area, it is starting to melt away. not all at once, though. here's a live look from san jose right here. you see the snow-capped mountain tops. beautiful. beautiful sight. we've been tracking the winter storm that brought rain, wind, and that low elevation snow. it started coming down wednesday afternoon, then even more snow fell thursday night into friday morning. now we will still see those whitecaps, but it is melting as we said just a bit. this is in danville earlier today. >> these winter conditions are not over just yet. we've got the latest from our meteorologist rob mayeda. >> east of san jose and as we move forward, we go see some rain may come back as we wrap up the weekend.

right now, scattered showers including flurries around mt. hamilton to the east of san jose. the real action is across southern california where they're seeing those same low snow levels. north of downtown los angeles. as the low moves out, what will be moving in tomorrow is a more mild storm that will bring us some rain at times for sunday, followed up by a second storm monday that once again will bring low snow levels back to the bay area. look at that. 2,000 to 3,000 feet, again not as low as this last week, but still low enough that our bay area hilltop will get another chance for seeing some snow. you could see as one cold low moves out, here's the next one that moves in for monday. that will be driving snow levels downward, and early projections are around the diablo range, toward mt. hamilton, and around the santa cruz mountains, you'll see the snow totals starting to come up again. look at that -- on monday, across the north bay peaks, elevations above 2,500 feet have a chance for seeing more snow. it's not just a little bit of

snow but maybe five to seven feet of snow for the sierra. we've got blizzard warnings reissued for the sierra. this is monday through wednesday. so a lot of active weather. we're talking a lot about the snow, but that monday storm, too, should bring high rain totals, as well, for elevations below 1,000 feet. we'll have a closer look at the two storms hour by hour coming up in about ten minutes. >> wild stuff. thank you so much. thousands of pg&e customers still without power due to this week's crazy weather. here's a look at the current outage map. nothing compared to what it was. crews are working to restore power to just under 7,000 customers. most of them in the south bay and north bay, as of about an hour ago 3,600 south bay customers in the dark. nearly 2,700 in the dark in the north bay. now let's get to video out of colfax. heavy snowfall closed parts of highway 80 in and out of the sierra yesterday. this morning thousands of cars and trucks traveled the now-opened highway. currently drivers don't need chains on 80, but of course that

could change. chains are required on highway 50. down south, heavy winter weather conditions continue in i-5 over the grapevine. take a look. because of the snow and poor visibility, the grapevine, it's closed. no word on when it will reopen. caltrans crews working around the deadlock clear the roadways, drains, and debris before more rain and snow arrives. >> and you can always track the weather right on your smartphone. just download our free nbc bay area news app. you'll get access to our radar and customized weather alerts sent straight to your phone. this is crazy for a couple reasons. new video tonight of an illegal side show in oakland. happened just before midnight near kellar avenue and mountain boulevard. police say dozens of vehicles were involved in the sideshows across oakland including one on grand avenue. another happened near eades each and higgerberger. when you look at this, i have

never seen this. a chaotic scene at one of those locations. it appears -- doesn't appear, that is a big rig involved. this video shows the truck driving doughnuts and people just can't get enough of it, cheering, jumping on the back. opd is investigating. oakland police are also investigating three deadly overnight shootings. the first happened just before 8:00 last night. 72nd avenue and international, the victim died at the scene. about an hour later, two blocks away, another shooting. police say the victim was killed in front of mike's bong shop number two. a few hours after that, a third shooting, this one near 62nd and avanal avenues. police and paramedics performed lifesaving measures, but that person also died. no arrests have been made in any of the shootings. investigators say they do not appear to be related. she's officially launched her campaign. east bay congresswoman barbara lee held a kickoff rally in oakland today. she's throwing her name into the hat. one of several representatives

looking to replace senator diane feinstein who is retiring. we have more. hello, oakland! >> reporter: congresswoman barbara lee was met by supporters in oakland to launch her new campaign. >> when we fight, we win. and that's why i'm running for the united states senate. [ cheers ] >> reporter: congresswoman lee has represented californiaed 12th -- california's 12th district since 1998. prior to that she served in the senate. she reflected on her career, progressive ideas she's led in the house, and her willingness to take a stand. >> when 9/11 filled america's heart with sorrow and anger, i stood as an army of one and said no to endless wars. [ cheers ] >> reporter: bay area leaders joined congresswoman lee including the mayors of oakland and san francisco, and constituents came, too.

>> i'm really excited to be here. i brought my granddaughters today. >> she is more attuned with my way of thinking. >> reporter: the race is shaping up to be one to watch with southern california representatives adam schiff and katie porter also in the race. >> dianne feinstein has indicated she's not going to be running, so you've got an open election, open elections mean that almost anything can happen. >> reporter: nbc bay area political analyst larry gerzden says it's early and a lot can happen along the way. >> what the candidates are doing right now and over the next coup of months on two minutes. one, raising money. that's imperative. and two, attempting to differentiate themselves from one another in what is really an area where they have a whole lot more in common than not. >> only two black women have served in the united states senate since 1789. so when someone tries to tell me that a black woman of my age

with all of the experience i bring to the table can't win a fight, i just smile to myself, and i say "watch me." >> reporter: nbc bay area news. as mentioned, representatives adam schiff and katie porter are also campaigning for senator feinstein's seat. lee, schiff, and porter are all democrats. no republicans have entered the race yet. the filing deadline is not until december 8th. another lawsuit against elon musk's twitter. the latest complaint comes from a text startup called writer inc. it says twitter failed to pay up. this is the sixth u.s. company to sue over nonpayment since musk took over the social media giant in october. finance experts say these kind of disputes are not typical after a buyout. they are more indicative of a financially distressed company. new details about the huge fire at a dock that we told you last night at 11:00. look at that.

flames broke out around 10:00 at markley cove resort. firefighters found several boats, jet skis, and house boats on fire. no one hurt. cal fire now says at least half of the dock was destroyed. 23 boats burned. that number could grow as the investigation continues. the cause is unknown. the first african methodist episcopal church in oakland will host its first service tomorrow since a fire destroyed that property. the church stood at 37th and telegraph for nearly 70 years. flames gutted the church early last week. tomorrow's service will be held at a nearby synagogue. service begins at 10:00 a.m. at the temple beth abraham on macarthur avenue. people are coming together to show support for street vendors after two recent attacks on vendors in san jose. you might remember one of the v chips was attacked last thursday -- victims was attacked last thursday out the s.a.p. center. a customer beat the man after he refused to give him a free hot dog. police have not made an arrest in this case. the other victim is carlos

sanchez. police say he was assaulted last saturday, but the owner of a nearby automotive shop told him to the leave the area. he faces several charges. one local influencer is encouraging the bay area to come out to san jose for a vendor buyout event to help support them. both carlos and saul will be there. it is happening outside of the index auto parts at old bayshore tomorrow. ahead, the warriors celebrating black history. the familiar faces out at thrive city today. and hikers in the east bay were out enjoying the snow before it melts away. how things were looking up on mission peak this morning. pretty incredible views around the bay area. right now, still seeing a few scattered showers coming from the east. we'll get rain tomorrow that may wash away a little of the snow. guess what, monday through wednesday, more low snow levels coming back to the bay area. we'll have the timeline, hour by hour, when we come right back.

coordinating council hosted a rally this afternoon before the march got under way. there were speeches from community leader and dignitaries, performances from musicians. organizers want to show solidarity and keep the war in the public eye. >> i think what russia's doing is horrible because many people have to leave their houses, many people died. many people like -- i think it it's horrible, and people need pay more attention to that because people do need to support at this time. >> yesterday marked one year since the russian invasion of ukraine. the u.n. estimates that at least 8,000 civilians have been killed. ukraine estimates that nearly 146,000 ukrainian troops have died so far. american officials estimate 200,000 russian troops have been killed or wounded. black history month is coming to an end but not before the golden state warriors put on a celebration. all the festivities happened at thrive city out front outside of chase center this afternoon. there were arts, food, book store, cooking demonstrations

and music. hey, nbc bay area emceed the celebration. former warriors also made an appearance. >> slowly out of hibernation, and i think this is a good way to try to activate that. as we celebrate the end of black history month, it's a good way for us to come together and celebrate each other. >> there was so much going on earlier today. you see him right there, foyle, read his book, "too tall foyle." snow, this low in elevation, it is bringing out people who want to experience it. in the east bay, hikers set out to climb the snow-covered peak. this was at mission peak in fremont this morning. >> i think they were heading up -- >> heading up. we don't see snow yet. they were too low. >> too low. >> too low in elevation. the group began their hike at 5:00 this morning dodging the morning rush. they said this is the most people they've seen at the peak to hike. >> right when we got up there,

that's still up in the hills right now. temperatures today didn't warm up a lot. that helped keep the snow locked in. guess what -- bay area snow part two is in the forecast as we head into next week. right now, 47 degrees, beautiful view of the golden gate bridge with late day sunshine. temperatures cool on your saturday evening. 50 in san rafael. there's the snow east of san jose, currently at about 50 degrees. temperatures today, 40s and low 50s. we'll see similar temperatures tomorrow. but more rain, increasing rain during the morning hours. we'll see that around mid morning. morning temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. not as cold in the morning. rain at times for lunchtime, high temperatures tomorrow upper 40s to low 50s. then the rain should be moving out around this time tomorrow evening. so the radar view shows you we still have some showers drifting from the east to west, around low pressure which is sitting in southern california right now. there's our cold storm. that's going to move out.

in behind it will be rain on the increase tomorrow. for snow fans at least early on, this is not good news for you, notice the futurecast here. that's not snow, that's back to rain across the diablo range and the santa cruz mountains. so sunday's weather system moves through quickly. but most of that will fall in the form of rain. wind speeds will pick up around midday up to about 20 to 30 miles per hour. and yes, our snow totals really not much to see on sunday. rain totals, too, the green and the yellow showing most of the bay area seeing less than a half inch of rain with that sunday storm. now move forward, look what's happening here as we get toward monday. we'll see a colder storm and a stronger one at that. monday morning to midday. now we're back in the snow again across the hills. this is monday afternoon into tuesday morning. we're going to see snow levels come down again as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet. as we move forward now, there you go. we rinse it away tomorrow, but then it comes back monday and tuesday for the diablo range, santa cruz mountains. and monday's storm, too, will

bring more rain. most of the bay area about a half inch to an inch and a half of rain. if you're not getting snow below 1,000 feet, more substantial rain is likely for monday. you want to talk about substantial -- look at the sierra snow. this is the reason why there's a blizzard warning for the sierra monday morning through wednesday as we see right there, snow totals could be six feet in the sierra through midweek. that's the upper air pattern that's bringing us these cold conditions, low snow levels. thursday things calm down as skies clear. winter keeps on coming. tomorrow's rain is going to be more mild. you might be sad to see the snow fade away for sunday, but it's going to come back with cold temperatures again. highs in the 40s, snow levels again around the bay area, dropping down to 2,000 to 3,000 feet. i think it's lime we're going to see winter weather advisories for bay area mountains again and maybe some wind advisories, too, for monday. >> in the 30s at night. >> i know. >> round two. >> rob, thanks. next, an important change on the horizon for people who use

trapped all those cars. it was a similar situation on the freeway. this is on i-5 in sun valley. then outside of l.a. in the san fernando valley area, passengers were able to exit their cars. workers had to pipe the water off the freeway as the rain was falling. extra food stamp benefits are ending for millions of americans who rely on snap. starting in march, california and 31 other states will end the covid boost of snap benefits. 18 states have already ended the program. the move expecting to put a strain on families already struggling to make ends meet. local food banks are bracing for a spike in demand, as well. snap users will still receive food stamps, but the monthly amount will be significantly less. the daily amount per person expected to drop from about $9 to $6. first lady jill biden is in kenya. she's on a five-day trip to africa. she's been in namibia and traveled to kenya yesterday. the first lady has been promoting hiv/aids education as
