nichols. new action from police departments in response to more calls for change. a shift in the weather is on its way. when a chance of rain returns. how about some freezing cold temperatures? the excitement cannot be contained. we are live in philadelphia. the 49ers just one game away from heading to the super bowl. the news at six starts right now. thank you for joining us. we start with new developments out of memphis. the police department announcing today it is disbanding the scorpion unit. >> it comes one day after video was released showing five of that unit officers meeting nichols. nichols later died. the move comes after both the nichols family and community

activists demanded the unit be dismantled. the police department previously use the unit to patrol high crime areas of the city. 29-year-old nichols was stopped by officers on the evening of january 7th not far from his home. video footage released yesterday first shows nichols being pulled out of the car and later being kicked, struck with police batons and pepper sprayed by the officers. all five officers involved have since been charged with second- degree murder. after the release of the video, protests popped up across the country and continue today, including in memphis and other major cities like boston, atlanta and new york city. another developing story. justice for grandpa beecher. two years since the death of vicha. people are gathering in san francisco to honor his memory and stand in solidarity with other recent victims of anti- asian violence. a video now from the memorial tonight. this includes a lantern gathering ceremony started about an hour ago. in 2021, grandpa vicha was shoved to the ground while out in a walk. he died later from his injuries. his death sparked the stop asian heat movement here in the bay area and last october the city of san francisco named a city street in honor of grandpa vicha.

nbc bay area's alyssa gord is at tonight's event. she will join us tonight at 11:00. one more no. a few months ago, grandpa vicha's daughter sat down with us to share memories of her father. you can watch our report at nbcbayarea.com. another development to watch out for. the shift in the weather. it's clear tonight by the chance of some rain returns tomorrow. after that, it's going to get real cold. meteorologist is here to break it down for us. >> it will feel like we've gone back to some winter whiplash during the day tomorrow. first up, a chance of showers returning for the morning. wind advisory up for the north bay and then by tomorrow night, freeze warnings going into effect around the bay area. here's the trend as we move forward. notice we have partly cloudy skies with a cold air, snow across lower elevations of the pacific northwest. that's going to drop down during the day tomorrow. so with that cold air support, that's what's eventually going to lead to the freezing

temperatures across the wind sheltered inland valleys. in addition we still have some chance of showers being around mid morning to midday. focus on the santa cruz mountains. san jose. notice the precipitation type as well. we could see snow as low as 2500 feet. then the wind advisory picks up. 1:00 in the afternoon for the north bay. peak wind gusts will start to increase as we head into sunday night and the later sunday night into monday morning, freeze warnings in effect for the inner valleys of the bay area. bayside locations as well looking at frost advisories. heading into the week, we will track all these changes hour by hour. how much rain we are expecting and when the wind starts to move out in about 12 minutes. a reminder. download our free nbc bay area. you can track the ring when it will hit your neighborhood and plan ahead for any niners watch parties you may have tomorrow. more help for people from the peninsula recovering from

recent storms even as we heard maureen on the way. san mateo county has been added to the federal disaster declaration for california. this is different than a presidential emergency declaration from earlier this month. being added to the fema list means homeowners in san mateo county can now apply for individual assistance to recover from the storms. the coast guard has called off a search for a kayaker who went missing in tamale space. near the campground south of dillon beach. the sheriff's office says the kayaker fell overboard last night. the coast guard crews used drones, chopper and dive team and haven't found the kayaker. the sheriff's office says the mission is switching to a recovery operation. the menu at six, a high-profile case of not in my backyard and a wealthy peninsula neighborhood. steph curry, his wife aisha, they are weighing in on the affordable housing debate in atherton where they live. the warrior's star and wife are asking the city not to move forward with the proposed project of about a dozen three-

story townhomes very close to their property. they sent a letter to the city that reads in part quote, safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose atherton as home. with the density being proposed are 23 oakwood, there are major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety. now for the understatement of the night. it's a big weekend for the niners. they are in philadelphia getting ready to go head-to- head with the eagles. life at lincoln financial field where the two teams will be battling out tomorrow. a lot at stake for the winner gets a spot in the super bowl. it's going to be a lot of faithful fans in philadelphia tomorrow. we know that because they piled onto last-minute flights this morning. the airlines hosted a pep rally before one of the fights complete with appearances by sourdough sam, gold rush cheerleaders, 49ers drum line. there are also fan parties going down in philadelphia. anthony flores of course would want to be in the middle of that and he is. he joins us live. anthony, what's going on, my man? >> reporter: you can see and hear the energy and excitement. 49er fans are taking over

philadelphia. this place is going crazy with anticipation for the nfc championship. the 49ers are the underdogs, but they will have plenty of support from 49er fans who have traveled all over the country to cheer on the 49ers. >> let's go. >> reporter: they lined up around the building. to represent and cheer for their favorite team. the 49ers. some came all the way from the bay area. >> san francisco and oakland. >> reporter: others from the city of brotherly love. >> how are you a 49ers fan? >> i've been a fan since joe montana. >> reporter: has been a tough week to be a 49ers fan? >> it is. that she's not alone. there were quite a few locals who were part of the faithful. they gathered near the stadium for an nfc championship pregame pep rally dubbed a 49ers

invasion. thousands of fans invading philly to show off their 49ers pride. >> this is holger we go everywhere around every city, every location where we play at and we do this. >> reporter: there was food, music and plenty of 49ers' swag. you will find niner red all over the city. even on some of their iconic landmarks. >> put the t-shirt up there and after the game, i'm going to put philly's own mike's jersey on the statue after we win. right you are pretty confident. >> even though it's a tough environment, we are coming to philly and win the super bowl. it's ours this year. let's go. >> reporter: so many great things going on. we have burnell from memphis, tennessee. if you don't know this, he has his own meme doing the thriller dance. for now, i can't dance, but the things i do for tv. show us how to do the dance. >> y'all ready? one, two, three, go.

will come back. don't be alarmed if you see some smoke and flames in the valero refinery and venetia. the city has been notifying the fire department there a possible flaring that could happen on and off for the next 24 hours. i remember back in july, a mechanical issue sparked unscheduled flaring, but workers saying that today's flaring is part of routine maintenance. stomach it's a heavy week for so many given the recent tragedies of half moon bay, monterey park and the events in memphis. >> that's why san francisco's 13th annual black history month the lunar new year celebration was so important to organizers. christie smith was there. >> i love it. i love it. i love the culture exchange. reverend carol noland came to the bayview ymca for an event that was new to her. >> barbecue. i enjoyed everything. sitting here soaking up the culture now. >> reporter: is the annual

bayview black history month and lunar new year celebration. exploring the rich history of different cultures through education and community. >> this is something special to us. we started this festival 13 years ago when there was a lot of tension in the bayview district. especially between the asian and african-american community. we really want to, through the celebration, to promote harmony, understanding. exchange. >> reporter: there was food, cultural performances, games and conversations about the challenges people have experienced. the event comes at a difficult time in the bay area in the country. we met with so many tragic events happening recently, we really need this special moment to heal and to unite and stand against all the hate and violence. we met we talked about the tragedies in half moon bay. the tragedies at monterey city down in southern california. we talked about what happened in memphis, tennessee. at the end of the day, we want

from the highs we had out there today. store manger scanning the skies. upper level disturbance you're moving down the coast. that isn't what's going to bring the change of the weather. it's the strongly down from the pacific northwest. in track means it has the cold air support, but probably won't have a lot of moisture to work with. so as you wake up tomorrow morning, you will see a chance of showers across the coast. i think the best window of opportunity will be late morning to midday. watch this closely here around the santa cruz mountains over to san jose. 12:00 as you are getting your gametime viewing it away, could have snow around mount hamilton and mount diablo too. right around lunch time appears to be the peak of the showers and then as we head towards the evening, a few snow showers in the north bay. 6:00 and 11:00, the dryer air moves in and shower chances without. as you saw, there's not a lot

in terms of measurable rainfall for most areas. best totals will be around the santa cruz mountains health of san jose. other areas may miss out entirely, but everybody will feel the cold air and the gusty winds at times around the north bay for the afternoon. the day begins with mostly 40s, but look at these temperatures from noon to 3:00. upper 40s and low 50s outside through the day. it will feel even worse as the wind picks up. wind chill temperatures here across the north bay. peak wind speeds in the purple. sunday night into monday morning could be 40 to 50 miles per hour gusts on the higher hilltops. wind advisory for the north bay. 1:00 sunday to one hot monday afternoon. the next focus, freeze warnings setting up for monday morning. right now, tuesday looks to be the colder of the two mornings. less wind. cold right here. look at these temperatures. san jose out towards livermore, north bay valleys. old enough to see 20s and 30s. bayside temperatures too, cold enough for patchy frost around tuesday. cold, dry start to the week ahead. next chance of rain comes in as we get into about thursday. the pattern tries to stay a

federal prosecutors are worried about witness tampering in the ftx fraud case. prosecutors sent a letter to the judge in new york arguing that sam beckman freed should be barred from encrypted messaging software so he can't tamper with witnesses. they also claim the former ftx ceo may have already tempered with witnesses. according to new documents, beckman freed reached out to the lawyer at ftx who might become a witness. beckman freed faces charges of the collapse of his crypto exchange. a san francisco marijuana dispensary with the mission. the city's newest dispensary open today and it's going to help fund restorative justice and gun violence programs. this is the brainchild of corpuz. a violence prevention and youth development organization. the dispensary is called stiiizy located right there in

welcome back. i'm anthony flores live in philadelphia. the wait is almost over. less than 24 hours from now, the 49ers will take on the eagles for the right to go to the super bowl. the 49ers are in the nfc conference championship game for the second year in a row. the red and gold having red- hot. winners of 12 in a row. the eagles having the class of the

a recently rescued mountain lion cub is on the mend. >> soon she will get a roommate at the oakland zoo. meet holly. we've had her on the show before. she was found abandoned under a home in santa cruz last month. at the time, not doing well. pretty sick. underweight. today the zoo released the video of holly saying she is healing and getting stronger every day. as for holly's roommate, she will soon be living with hazel. another recently abandoned cub. hazel is on the mend now the zoo plans to introduce hazel and holly as soon as hazel is well enough. we will keep you posted on when that is. >> before we go, pirates. take a look. invading tampa, florida. is the annual gasparilla festival. fully rigged pirate ship. hundreds of other boats sailed for the tampa convention center. once they got there, the mayor just handed over the keys. no big deal.
