public. the news at 75:30 starts right now. thanks for joining us, i'm janelle wang. >> i'm raj mathai. tomorrow afternoon, president biden arrives in the bay area for a personal, firks hand look at how much damage was done by our recent storms. this is moffat field. you see the helicopters that will carry the president after he arrives on air force one, carry the president and his incur raj. he's set to tour parts of santa clara and santa cruz county tomorrow afternoon, including the heavily battered town of capitola. >> reporter: the main drag of capitola near the beach remains close as the massive cleanup continues. on the wharf, businesses say they're not even abe able to get to their buildings and it will be a long time before that changes. the capitola wharf was practically gutted by recent storms along with the rest of the capitola coastline.

the pier ripped apart by punishing waves. tomorrow the president will arrive for a closeup look at the devastation. >> i did a lot of their renovations last year. it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: david morris is the general manager of capitola boat and bait that's at the end of the wharf. >> we're looking at more than a year before we're rebuilt and operational again. so going to be a long journey. >> reporter: they gave us new drone video showing the damage up close. morris started a gofundme to raise money for workers who will have to find other jobs, and he'll host a fund-raiser on february 4th for them. >> help support the employees we've had working for us and for the workers who are out of work too. >> reporter: this area expected to be among the stops as president tours the storm damage tomorrow. >> tomorrow president biden will travel to areas impacted by the recent extreme weather in california. stops include the santa clara and santa cruz counties where

storms have caused severe floods and landslides. >> reporter: while some businesses may need a year to recover, others here in capitola are starting to get back on their feet. >> today's our first day, moved the sandbags today. i got tons of candy. >> reporter: the capitola sweet shop wants to make sure everyone knows they're open and is urging people to visit and support this tightknit community, they'll need it. >> a lot of looky lous but nobody's coming into the shop. they want to see how the restaurants and businesses are doing. >> reporter: the president's exact plans have not been disclosed. he'll visit santa clara county and watsonville and capitola, where we don't know, but there are plenty of temporary "no parking" signs that cover most of tomorrow. ian cull, bay area news. people in castro valley are worried about trees falling and

damaging their homes after a 200-ton eucalyptus tree fell into a home, injuring a four of father, in the hospital recovering from injuries. neighbors expressed concerns in an online petition calling on alameda county to remove eucalyptus trees in this area, saying there's about a dozen of them at risk of falling. a man on his patio saw the collapse firsthand. >> fire department and police showed up shortly after. yelling at people, there's live wire, get out of the way. >> we reached out to alameda county on this issue but have not heard back yet. leaders in the south bay are trying to figure out a way to keep unhoused people from living in creek beds. the santa clara valley water district held a special meeting

this afternoon. during the first rounds of heavy rain in the last few weeks, valley water, san jose p.d., and san jose's mayor matt mayhan went along creeks and rivers urging people to leave the areas. many of them did and found shelter at warming centers. but it was only a temporary solution. now leaders are looking for a long-term plan. >> we all do value this we recognize the extent of the problem, we're committed to solving as much as we can, as quickly as we can. so yeah, i'm so grateful that this meeting was held so quickly after we requested it. >> after an hour-long discussion the board unanimously approved to move forward and figure ways to create new encampments and shelters away from creek beds. if you want to know when tonight's storm moves in and out of your neighborhood, download our free abs bay area app. it's a great resource for all the information that you'll need. within the past two hours,

the san francisco district attorney announced she's filing charges against a man caught on camera spraying an unhoused person with a hose in the financial district. the viral video gained national headlines. the man with the hose is collier guinn and he faces charges of misdemeanor battery. at the time, guinn told us he was frustrated because he and other business owners had called police several times over issues with the person he sprayed, only for the person to return days or hours later. there's a bizarre missing dog case on the peninsula that has a palo alto woman distraught and police scratching their heads. the woman says she handed over her purebred german shepherd to a trainer and got back a different dog instead. nbc bay area investigative recorder hilda gutierrez joins us with the story. >> carolina was leaving the country for a few days and thought that would be a good opportunity to get her dog

trained professionally. until she received a panicked call from her son saying that their dog was never returned. >> it's like, he disappeared, we don't know if he's dead, i don't know where his body is or if he's alive, where is he? maybe with another person? they sold it? i don't know what happened to him. >> reporter: she's talking about her 7-year-old german shepherd scott. she says she last saw him in mid-december when a dog trainer she hired through the website thumb tack picked her up for boarding and training while she was in argentina. did you meet her, and what impression? >> it was okay. like in the photos, in thumb tack, it was the same person. she was very sweet. >> reporter: carolina says her dog scott was not returned on the final day and the dog trainer told her she had a family emergency. see did show up two days later

when carolina was not home, but with a different german shepherd. >> she came with another dog. so my older son called me and told me, "mom, this is not scott, this dog is totally different." he's very violent with us, he didn't recognize my son. so they took a picture for the new dog. >> reporter: carolina says the dog trainer left with a replacement dog and dropped this tracking tag that was on scott's collar on her front lawn. >> and she never called me back. i wrote several messages. she never answered me. next day, i called the police from argentina and my husband made the report to the police. >> reporter: carolina contacted thumb tack and says they refunded her $2,700. thumb tack told us they perform background checks through a

third party provider and as soon as they were made aware of the situation, they took action against the service provider and removed them from their thumb tack platform. she also posted to social media. in that carolina says the dog trainer finally texted back. in the texts she showed us, the dog walker claims she left scott with a dog sitter during a family emergency, and scott got away. there's no return to facilitate, the dog is definitely dead, broke through a screen, found blood streaks and clumps of the dog's fur, as well as part of a paw or an arm, the text read. did you ask for anything about why did you bring another dog? >> she told me she didn't know there was another dog that these men gave her another dog. >> reporter: the text messages also state the dog sitter is coordinating with police. palo alto police department confirmed that the case remains under active investigation as a grand theft of a dog. they also called the case very interesting.

we reached out to the dog trainer but have not heard back from her. we'll continue to look into this story and bring you updates, including whether anyone is charged for the crime. first it was covid, now many people are also worried about rsv. moderna might have a solution. moderna ceo stefan bensell says the company has developed a vaccine for rsv. he claims the moderna vaccine is 84% effective in preventing rsv in patients 60 or older. >> and so we run the experiment, 57,000 participants, control, all the good stuff. very happy when we were able to share the results. >> bensell says moderna plans to file an application for approval with fda in the coming months. tech companies appear to be leading the charge when it comes to using clean energy. the american clean power

association released a report that lists the top purchasers of wind and solar energy. amazon, meta, and google fill out the top three spots. the switch to clean power benefits the environment, but it also helps the company's bottom lines. the price of wind power has fallen 71% in the past decade, while solar power costs have fallen 47%. up next, ukrainian president zelenskyy is once again on the world stage. the message he sent to leaders today following a rough day in his fight against russia. the next storm system is just off to the north, beginning to develop some showers. i'll have the updated timeline and what's ahead for us in the and what's ahead for us in the seven-day forecast.

west. he made that request while speaking to western allies at the world economic forum in davos today. zelenskyy said the supply must come before the next russian offensive. it's been almost 11 months since russia invaded ukraine. the battlefield momentum has been with ukraine for months, but russia is spending more money to make advances. zelenskyy's comments come as speculation grows that russia could soon launch more attacks. speaking of which, at least 17 people, including several senior ukrainian officials and at least farr children, were killed today when a helicopter crashed in fog near a kindergarten outside of kyiv. nbc's rave sanchez is at the crash site. >> reporter: today's helicopter crash rocking not just kyiv but the wartime government of ukraine. among the dead, the country's interior minister, one of the most powerful members of president zelenskyy's cabinet, a position roughly equivalent to the u.s. secretary of homeland security. so a major loss to ukraine's

government as it deals with this crisis. at least four children also killed. they died as the helicopter came down at around 8:20 a.m. local time, spreading debris over this kindergarten just as parents were dropping kids off at school. the investigation into the crash is being led by the state security agency of ukraine, the country's domestic security agency. they say they are not ruling out any possibilities, including pilot error, some kind of technical malfunction on board, or the possibility that this helicopter was deliberately targeted. raf sanchez, nbc news, ukraine. soldiers who have lost limbs fighting in ukraine are getting help from the u.s. specialists at a lab in maryland are volunteering to create the prosthetics and teach soldiers how to use them. it's cutting-edge medical technology the soldiers cannot get in ukraine. >> they come in on a wheelchair

on crutches. my goal is that they walk back on the plane. >> ahead on "nightly news," see soldiers learning to use their state-of-the-art limbs and find out where the money to help them is coming from. all coming up at 6:30. let's turn attention over to jeff ranieri, our chief meteorologist. i understand rain is coming in tonight? but it's small potatoes considering what we've been through? >> that's right. we may have some impacts though, the ground's so wet. we're tracking maybe landslides, even elevated flooding concern. but yes, this is the last storm in the series of storms. we're going to get you through this and everything that's happening beyond. and look at this. i wanted to start off with our san francisco rainfall totals. and we are now past what we should have for the entire season in san francisco. 21.75 inches, average season 21.25 inches. our season ends july 1st.

we'll finish at least 102% of normal, which is phenomenal. how about the wettest season ever? not quite there yet. the wettest season, 1983. 43.75 inches. 1998 coming in at 42.17. we still have february and march to go, which can be huge banner months for us. there are some increasing signs that we would get more active weather certainly for february. we'll continue to tally this up and track it for you. already our entire season rainfall now in san francisco. so putting damage aside, good stuff at least on that front. otherwise, storm ranger and mobile doppler radar, areas of light to moderate rain developing. nothing too heavy. moving off to the south with showers in petaluma by 6:26 tonight. we do expect it to pick up around 7:00 with some heavier downpours in the north bay. it's going to move quickly to the peninsula and east bay by 9:00 p.m. gets down to the south bay at 11:00 at night. and then it does clear out after

that and we are looking at a dry start as we head through tomorrow. rainfall totals, trace amounts to .5 inches. best chance north bay, east bay. less through the south bay and the peninsula, which is a sigh of relief for you. if you're still doing it in kind of storm cleanup. tomorrow morning, starting off cold, down to the 30s. 36 in the tri-valley. south bay 39. layer it up. a heavier jacket in the east bay, 37. 42 in san francisco. number one show there in the north bay, 35, a chance of patchy frost. tomorrow, this begins our much-needed extended break. we're going to get sunshine. temperatures here in the low to mid-50s across the bay area. 56 in santa rosa. 55 in half moon bay. 54 in san jose. we'll stay with similar weather like this all the way through the next seven days. from an area of high pressure that's going to take the storm track that has been so aggressive and just hammering us with all of those storms.

the french nun believed to be the oldest person in the world has died. lucille rendon, known as sister andre, died last night. she was almost 118 years old. as a nun she dedicated her life to serving others. sister andre made headlines most recently in 2021 when she tested positive for covid. her symptoms were so mild she said she didn't even know she was sick.

sister andre enjoyed a glass of wine and chocolate every day. more trouble at jfk airport in new york city. two jet blue planes bumped into each other on the runway today. one flight was pushing away from the gate when it collided with an empty plane parked in that gate area. both planes taken out of service for inspection. no one was hurt in this collision. this comes after two planes almost collided during takeoff last friday. the faa is investigating both incidents. clear out your plans for sunday afternoon. even if you don't like football, find a tv or a ticket. it's the 49ers/cowboys, round two of the playoffs. today our sky ranger high above levi's stadium. looking pretty good, right? looks in tip-top shape. the grounds crew touching up the paint in the end zone as they get ready for sunday, 3:30 afternoon kickoff. if you want to go, standing room only tickets -- you don't get a seat, you have to stand, sro,

if you want to invite me to a party, then i'll go. >> we'll talk about it. another chapter in the rivalry between the two franchises. the niners hosting the cowboys sunday in round two of the playoffs. >> reporter: the historical significance of a 49ers/cowboys postseason matchup goes well beyond the bay area in dallas. in five of their eight previous playoff meetings, the winner has gone on to raise the lombardi trophy. when the 49ers defeated the cowboys in last year's wild card game, it reignited one of the greatest postseason rivalries in nfl history. >> the biggest rivalry in football growing up. usually that goes away when you don't meet in the playoffs a bunch. we had a big game last year, a big game this year. so the more you do that, the bigger it gets. >> reporter: this year marked the 41st anniversary of "the catch," dwight clark's famous touchdown-winning reception from joe montana that propelled the niners to victory over the cowboys in the 1981 nfc championship on their way to

their first super bowl title. none of the players on this team were around for the start of the 49ers' dynasty. brandon aiyuk wasn't born when the niners defeated the cowboys in the '94 playoffs at candlestick. the star receiver says he didn't fully understand it last year when the niners and cowboys played in the wild card, but now he knows just how important this rivalry is to both franchises and their fans. >> i get to hear about this stuff, the history, hear about the fans. even my family. >> everybody's talking about the rich history between these teams, it's super fun. >> reporter: the 49ers are the hottest team in the nfl, riding an 11-game winning streak. the cowboys are fresh off monday night domination of tom brady and the buck new year's. the niners say watching game film from last year's win is helpful but likely won't have a huge impact on this game. >> every year is a new year. two different teams in the playoffs.

president biden coming to the bay area tomorrow. we have his itinerary as he is going to tour some of the worst damage from our recent storms. mostly small dogs, but also big dogs. more scary, children. >> tonight, attacked by a pack of coyotes in the south bay. a warning from a south bay couple after their dog was nearly killed. the news at 6:00 starts right now. thanks for being with outside this wednesday. i'm raj mathai. >> i'm jessica aguirre. bichon no match for the canine pack, a nearly deadly encounter in the south bay when six coyotes went into a san jose couple's fenced backyard and attacked their small dog. they're sounding the alarm to protect their neighbors' pets and neighbors' kids. marianne favro talked with the couple and has the story you'll see only on nbc bay area.

yuki's owners say the coyotes came through the fence. they've put up wiring to prevent it happening again. this is yuki recovering after he was attacked by six coyotes. you may find the images from after the attack disturbing. the 15-pound bichon lost his eye, nearly his life on new year's day. >> shocked. he was in terrible shape. >> reporter: surveillance caught six pairs of glowing eyes heading toward the back porch before the attack. her husband says he's seen one or two coyotes but never this machine. >> six coyotes, they can attack not only small dogs but big dogs. more scary, they can attack children. and
