storm comes in. i will be tracking that. vianey arana is watching the roadways and still standing water in some spots. >> especially along some of the localized ets, surfaces, news is the highways had a quick response into the overnight hours, so a lot of the sig-alerts that happened last night did car as of this morning. san josé interchange moving along. for the most part we have the unfortunate usual closure, and i am seeing an accident on 580 in the westbound lanes, looks like ere could be a lane being blocked by an earlier crash. another spot you may want to look at is interchange from 152 down through gilroy, please be careful and slow it down out there. the latest storm taking a tragic turn in the north bay

where one death is already confirmed. this happened last night in rural sonoma county where a falling tree smashed into a home killing an infant. the baby's parents were uninjured, and the incident weighed extremely heavy on first responders. >> anytime you have a situation like this especially with a child, everybody's emotions are a lot higher. >> accordi to "the press democrat," a tree fell into a double wide rv and the baby died before the emergency personnel could transport them to the hospital. also in the north bay this morning, growing concern on waterways as they reach their limit. lot of people fearing flooding may come. >> and today pete suratos is

live and this area has a history with flooding with the nearby creek. how is it looking now? >> reporter: yeah, there's that history when that flooded this downtown area. the creek areas are well below the flood stage, but because of the history you just mentioned, laura, we have all these sandbags. they know when it rains, folks are concerned because of the history where you had a lot of flooding in this area several years back. let's talk about the entire north bay, say in the santa rosa area. this is a tweet from santa rosa. you see these downed trees, and that's what you see across the bay area, and so much saturated soil from the back-to-back storms in the previous rains. you get the strong wind gusts and you get trees knocked down. that's what we are seeing in santa rosa. a big night for folks in that

area. i want to go to sonoma county. this is where we are looking at the russian river that is prone to flooding. it's expected to reach flood stages in a matter of days. i did take a recent look at the noaa website where folks can monitor when it will reach that flood stage, and it looks like it will hit flood stage sunday morning. of course that data can change. when it floods near the russian area, it's low-lying areas near the russian area are prone to flooding. sonoma county has an evacuation order because it's always a concern especially if it appears it could hit that flood stage on sunday morning. let's take you out here live. you see the sandbags set up, and it's along this entire area, folks. we are preparing for that storm, but so far so good. no flooding in downtown.

our team coverage continues with today in the bay's candice nguyen. look at that damage at the gas station behind you, candice. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, laura. good morning to you. the first thing that sticks out is the shear size of this canopy behind me, and it's as large as a swimming pool, i might add. this entire area blocked off by tape, if i step to the side and we zoom in a bit, take a look at the gas pumps. at least two crushed under the canopy. the employees say the structure may have been slumping before the winds blew it down. this vallejo gas station is in san francisco, and the canopy came crashing down yesterday

when strong winds came sweeping through across the bay area. we are not smelling gas either, and folks cleared out fearing something like this could happen and of course, in preparation for this storm. public works, crews were breaking down a tree, and the department said their morning is far from over as emergency crews work to clear roads this morning, thee asking all of uso do what we can to stay safe. >> this is a great reminder, if you don't need to be out driving in this weather whenever you are in the storm system, please consider staying at home. >> reporter: back out here live, no doubt windy this morning. i am feeling it right now. felt it in the car driving from the san mateo over, and felt it shaking around my car. had to be careful on the roads. as for the rain, as you can see,
4:37 am
it's relatively dry and has been for the last couple of hours, and of course, this rain expected to return soon. live from san francisco, and back to you. >> thank you. normally this time of day we are talking about the weekend weather, and this is a weekend weather of storms. >> right, there will be more waves of rain coming in and potentially thunderstorms, and i know you are trying to make plans here but look at what is ahead, as we go into tomorrow we will see rain going into the north bay and spreads into the rest of the bay area early on saturday. looks soggy throughout the day on saturday as well as sunday and then it will go into a new week with more rain. if you are trying to get to lake tahoe, tomorrow is a good travel day, but i do advise that you stay past sunday and most likely past monday as well until we get another break. extend that trip, but we are going to give them a chance to clear those roads for late tonight and into early tomorrow. the earlier the better if you
4:38 am
are going to the tahoe region. if you are heading a little bit further south, there will also be rain and there will be a break for tomorrow and early on saturday, but then on saturday afternoon into sunday, rain will be moving in for paso robeles. it looks soggy throughout the day on saturday as well as sunday, and those temperatures will be coming down. we're watching all of these conditions as we do get a couple more storms coming in, we will take it hour by hour and talk about how much rain we already measured and what is ahead as we go into the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. vianey has been watching the roads. look at the san mateo bridge. looks good. >> looks good and is moving along, and chp, of course, is warning drivers that the wind will be picking up, and it makes it tough especially on the bridges. they have high wind advisories in place, the venetian bridge and there's no major impact as

far as flooding on the highways. there's leftover, of course, ponding water for some of the on-ramps and off-ramps. this is in through gilroy right at the inner pass. we have flooding out there, and will talk more about drive times and public transportation coming up. >> thank you. coming up on "today in the bay," new details emerging on the leak of information tied to hundreds of millions of accounts hundreds of millions of accounts and the data that may be

tree fell. drivers are being asked to avoid the area. and viewers are sharing video, rain, pictures, and be sure and share your videos by tagging us. >> more storms are headed our way. >> it will be off and on today, and with the breaks in between you may havehe opportunity to get out there today and get things done before that rain returns. let's talk about how much we already measured around the bay area with two and a quarter inches of rainfall in santa rosa. napa getting an inch and a quarter there, a little more than that. more than two and a quarter inches for concord, and almost an inch of rain for hayward, and in san francisco, in redwood city, about an inch and quarter there. looking at the mountains where we typically see a lot more rainfall, the santa cruz

mountain view, heavy rain coming down right now. we are also going to have a potential of small hail. the flood watch continues for all of the bay area for today. we are still going to see the water coming down and drain into the creeks and rivers. they may continue to rise as we go into today. also some gusty winds that may continue for the morning, but we are going to gradually start to see the winds calming down. there's also the landslide potential that will continue, and heavy sierra snow will continue to come down for today. we talked about mudslides and debris flows, and with all of this heavy rain coming down, it doesn't really have a chance to get absorbed in the soil, at least when the rainfall rates are high. even once it does, we have a lot of rain that's coming down and it's also creating some very soggy conditions out there. if you are near a hill, especially near a burn scar, that could run off and we are looking at the potential of
4:56 am
mudslides that will continue for the next several days and possibly weeks because of all the heavy rain. we are going to continue to see gusty winds. they dropped the high wind warning but we are still under a wind advisory for the coastal areas as well as the hills. some of those gusts may reach 30 to 40 miles per hour, possibly still up to 70, but i do think the winds are starting to relax a little bit. as far as our wind gusts forecast, here we are at 10:30. we are still getting 30 and slightly higher wind gusts along the coast. as we go into this evening, about 8 to 10-mile-per-hour winds. there's a brief break before the next storm system comes in before the weekend, and first starting in the north bay as we head into tomorrow afternoon, and continuing off and on throughout the weekend, there will be more storms on monday and tuesday, and possibly on wednesday and thursday. more atmospheric rivers heading our way so we will be dealing with all of the heavy rain with not a lot of breaks in between.
4:57 am
we take a look at the 7-day forecast. we basically have to put a rain icon on almost every single day except for tomorrow. we will start to see the rain returning to the north bay late tomorrow evening. we are tracking all this and will have more of the weather forecast and taking it hour by hour, and that's coming up in a few minutes. all right. thank you. well, happening now the storm is creating major roadblocks on the central coast, a portion of highway 1 shutdown near big sur. caltrans blocked it with a metal barrier. it goes to ragged point. caltrans says this area is vulnerable to flooding as well as mud and rock slides, but no estimates on when it will reopen. it's 4:57 right now. our storm ranger is tracking it all. here's live look outside on this thursday morning. much more ahead. you're watchin"today in the g
