welcome to asian pacific america. i'm robert handa. we feature some talented folks on our program today. we start with the winner of the steve silver foundation and beach blanket babylon dance winner. we will talk dance, career and headware. next we went on the road to visit chef srijith gopinathan. if you know about culinary awards, he earned a mitch lynn star for campton place in frsan

francisco for six years in a row. then the grant program for non-profits, 21st century solutions. there is one original theatrical show i try to catch every year. beach blanket babylon is one of the true san francisco experiences everyone should catch. started by steve silver, it's a pleasure to have a young woman who has been picked as the dance winner of the steve silver foundation and beach babylon foundation for the arts. that's mari kojima who won after performing in front of judges. she's headed to uc san diego. but she's here with us now. welcome. >> hi. thank you. >> first let's talk about this scholarship win. congratulations. >> thank you so much. >> what did you have to do to win? weaudition. >> we had send in a video

application. and then they invited nine finalists, three from each category, to compete for the scholarship. >> did you know much about beach blanket babylon at that time? >> kind of. one of my friends actually applied before and she told me i should. i was like, okay. >> you came in wearing a big hat to the audition? >> no. >> we have part of your winning performance that we will show now and more later on. let's look at that and we will talk about it after. >> okay. ♪ >> we were talking about the fact the audience was family and friends. did that make is more reassuring or more nerve-wracking. >> more nerve-wracking, actually. i'm used to dancing in front of

a blank audience. i don't know who these people are but i'm going to show them what i have. when you are in front of family and friends, they know what you are capable of. more pressure. >> give me an idea, when did you first start -- get interested in dancing? why this particular type of dance? >> well, i started when i was 2 1/2. because i had a bad case of asthma a asthma. my doctor recommended physical activity to distract myself from my lungs to be stronger. >> certainly, appears to have worked. >> i hope so. >> we do a lot of featuring of performing arts on our show, mainly because i feel like the performing arts is a glass ceiling kind of situation for a lot of asian american and pacific islander artists. we don't know a lot about the dance community and the dance scene. is that a situation that is better or worse for dancers and

especially asian american and pacific islander dancers? >> there's pros and cons. i have struggled with my short legs. a long torso compared to my european american friends who have such long legs, beautiful arches on their feet. definitely being shorter is better than being tall in the dance community. >> of course, when people say this is preferred versus that, a lot has to do with the history and way it has been built toward that. in a way, it's a self-defeating situation. but you were intent on pursuing it. what is it that drives you? dancing is not an easy discipline. >> i don't know. dancing makes me happy but also people that -- my dance teacher, she pushes me forward. people like that definitely inspire me. celebrities that i see on tv, missy copeland.

she did not have the dancer body, the beauty standards for a ballerina. but she kept on going. she made it so far. >> i know you want to pursue it as a career. what's the balance you are going to try to keep? >> i'm on the dance team. i also will take classes outside of the dance team. hopefully, i can maybe teach classes in the future. >> you are an international business major? >> yeah. talent and brains, that's a good thing to combine. >> thank you. >> possibly, you would like to be a part of breaking that glass ceiling? >> yeah. definitely. >> we wish you the best of luck. >> thank you so much. >> let us know how you are doing. >> i will. >> we will see more of your performance later on as well. beach blanket performances are at the club fugazi.

welcome back. we took asian pacific america on the road to see a culinary artist srijith gopinathan. give us an idea in terms of how you got started as a boy that brought you here. >> like most people back home in india, i think my cooking started in our little family kitchen. it started probably the chief -- the executive chef of the home is typically my grandmother. we just take ideas from her. that's how it all started. >> that's why all great cooking is based from home cooking? >> absolutely.

can't get better. >> how did that interest turn into something that you made it profession? did you actually feel like you have something inside of you that was a creative outlet? something about it that appealed to you? was it strictly you liked food and it grew from there? >> it was totally by chance, not by choice. i started off -- now i wish that it was by choice. it started off as a chance. i did not have a passion then. i knew i liked to eat food. and to eat good food i thought i need to know how to cook food. it started that way. then i ended up in cooking school. that's where everything started. >> before you got to cooking school, did you feel as though you have certain traits or certain talents that lent itself to that that maybe you didn't realize you have? >> i think growing up in india where education is everything, your first goal is to be a

doctor or engineer. to be a chef was never a goal. >> so when you started your training, how did you take to it? was it something that felt natural from the start or was it something had you to work at? >> once i professionally started training, yes, i quickly felt that, yes, this is my ball game. >> what was it about it that appealed to you? what was it that hit you intrens intrinsical intrinsically? >> you could do what you want to do what encouraged me. you could put anything together and find out with a quick answer is it good or not good. if it's good, okay. >> i think that's one of the things that always appeals to people and is the mystery of cooking is the idea of some people can follow recipes and some people, like my mother is a professional cook as well, she does so much by instinct, by the feel of how she's putting things

together, how it will taste. >> i am so much even today. i write a lot of recipes down for other people, to train them. i never write one for myself. you ask me how do you make it, i don't know how to tell you. i can show you. >> are you sort of trying to put together a dish that you know will appeal to you? or do you know that you are creating something that will have appeal to a lot of different people regardless of their preference or taste? >> i personally feel what i like -- what i like to eat is probably going to make at least 80% of the people who i feed is going to also like. that's the formula i work from. i always make adjustments if somebody would like to see adjustments. >> does the indian culture, did it help you in terms of becoming who you are today? how much of it did influence you? >> a lot. because indian food is very complex and to cook with a lot of blends and mix.

it was almost like cooking other cuisine was coming backward. you knew the complexity, now toning it down is easier than toning it up. >> you will make a dish for you? >> today we will make a cauliflower salad. >> we will go to the kitchen. >> absolutely. let's do it. some fresh cauliflower, different kinds, green, purple, some watermelon radish. >> color is important? >> very important. >> i have chick pea puff. these are puffed buckwheat right here. i have spiced yogurt. the spices are infused. you have yogurt -- a little buttermilk sauce. you have a green sauce which is mint and cilantro with olive

oil. >> thank you for preparing this. normally, this would be time consuming for you. >> that's right. next i get the cauliflower cooked. it's cooked in our little oven. go quickly there and get that. this is the spiced cauliflower. put it all the way around. this is going to take me five to six minutes to get roasted. put a small lid on it. that's the cauliflower. they're really hot. this is a spiced cauliflower which has been cooked. this is a skewer. >> to be honest, it smells good enough. >> extra virgin olive oil to it.

give it a little sea salt right here. >> there is that california touch already. >> maybe a little pepper. people like black pepper. you don't have to necessarily because it's spiced up. beautiful. this should be enough for two to three portions. i will make one portion for you. only for you. >> i will share. you can smell when you open it up. smells good. >> that's the finished product. we got one more ingredient to go. >> we can only show so much. he can do so much more. so coming up, we will see more from the chef.

we saw some of the culinary

artistry of srijith gopinathan. now a more in-depth look with the master chef. >> we will chose a sompose a sa. move the kwaul cauliflower into. a big salad. very simple. spice yogurt, has cumin, a little mustard, all the things being toasted off and added to it. then you strain them down. a little bit of yogurt. a little cilantro, mint and olive oil and a little green chili into it. >> a bit spicy. >> not spicy. i would call it flavorful. >> not spicy. hot. >> hot. a little tamerin, salt and

sugar. here when i make it, i know how it works. i understand the intensity. so i get a balance because acid, the idea of mint and coriander and the yogurt. it balances out sweet, spicy and sour. a drizzle of olive oil. i love olive oil. >> personal preference? >> yes. more black pepper into it. a touch more -- the yogurt doesn't have any salt. it has spice, no salt. i would like to add a little more salt to make sure that comes together. >> you get to see from there. a presentation part of this one. how you are presenting it.

>> you are not ready for dinner, i make it smaller. if it was dinner, i would make it bigger. >> plus, we only have a half hour show. >> would you like to taste this? >> yes. you just touched on it, but how do you choose these ingredients to go with it? >> just by eating them, tasting them. everywhere i go, i taste. go to market, i keep eating. that's the reason why i put on weight. >> all for the public good. right? >> watermelon radish. you could use white cauliflower. olive oil.

a tiny bit of salt. it has enough salt when you combine it together. not too much. shavings of three types of cauliflower. give a fresh feel to the whole dish now that they have been roasted off. there you go. again, if you are making at home, it depends how much you need. if you like fresh cauliflower more, do it. if not, don't do a lot. watermelon radish, a little bit of crunch. fresh mint i like because mint is -- i like to connect it with the sauce. >> you have to be careful with those flavors. >> correct. again, don't get intimidated with the usage of tweezers.

i'm not a big user, but i like to use in intricate salads. >> it shows you in terms of the portion you are putting on. >> now comes some buckwheat. anything puffed. i like buckwheat because it takes care of the gluten-free guests here. >> there is the california influence. >> california influence again. >> what are the options if you didn't want to add that? >> you could do just regular puffed wheat. but i like the buckwheat. these are chick pea puffs. very popular indian snack. >> what is this? >> these are basically chick peas made in a thick batter and fried off. topped off with a little bit of tamerin here.

the same yogurt which i used earlier, a little bit. >> interesting. proportion and presentation here. >> right. >> give it a little acidic taste to it. a little spiced buttermilk sauce to finish the whole thing. >> what's in here? you prepared it beforehand. >> this has got buttermilk, yogurt, a spice blend. it's a long recipe.

>> the boutique was created in 2014 in september. >> the boutique, this is where anyone can purchase affordable yet high quality apparel from south asia. >> it's one of those which is a pantsuit. >> the boutique is run by the agency matri. it provides advocacy and support to victims of domestic violence. >> every human being lives a life of dignity. i feel that is a right for every human right, men, women, children, everyone. domestic violence takes away that right. >> once a victim decides it's time to move away from the abuser, she says they have to start from the beginning, especially if they haven't had a job in a while, if at all. that's where the economic empower program kicks in. first, it offers victims a job here in the boutique. >> the boutique is a start for them, the work ethic that every day to wake up and they haven't been doing that, to wake up, take public transportation if

♪keep on the sunny side of life♪ coming up on today in the. . good morning. coming up on today in the bay, it's an all too familiar feeling for some of those who have to leave their homes this morning as a wildfire forces evacuations in the north bay. why police officers in the east bay say they had no choice but to shoot at two men in a stolen car. police need your help finding this child abducted from the east bay. who took him and where they are headed. this is today in the bay. it is your sunday morning look outside. we are looking at san francisco, low clouds. the usual scene as we look across the bay area every day.

welcome to your sunday. >> good morning. >> how is it looking out there? >> similar to yesterday. still fog. it was gorgeous yesterday. more of that today. more of that wind picking up, bringing in the cooler temperatures. here is a live look at san jose. you can see the low clouds hanging in the background. we do still have areas of coastal fog this morning. it's not quite as thick as yesterday. there are thick areas, watch for that to clear. 61 currently in san jose with highs today reaching into the 90s. 57 in oakland, 61 in santa rosa. temperatures will reach into the low 90s for the inland areas. 78 in oakland, 88 in san jose. 60 over in half moon bay. more on the cooler weather in a couple minutes. >> we like that. thanks. we want to tell you now about developing news out of lake county achlt wildfire is forcing families out of their homes this morning.

it's deja vu for a community hit by a destructive fire last year. the clayton fire ignited late yesterday afternoon. it is spreadly quickly overnight. it burned 600 acres. it is creating a lot of smoke over that area in lake county. people who live in the lower lake area have been told to leave their homes. this, of course, is miles down the road from the area evacuated last september because of the valley fire. that massive wildfire destroyed more than 1300 homes and killed four people. cal fire helping to fight the fire. it is 15% contained this morning. new details on the battle to contain another fire in monterey county. about 20 miles of highway 1 south of point sur state historic park will be closed starting this afternoon. this is so firefighters can try to protect a containment line. the closure will be from the

point sur light station to coast ridge road. it will begin at 2:00 and could last up to 24 hours. the fire is now 60% contained. but it continues to grow by the day. it's burned nearly 71,000 acres. one person has died, 57 hopes have been destroyed. new details from heyward where police say they were forced to open fire on the driver of a stolen car that rammed two police officram ed two police cars. it happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. a call about a stolen car near sheryl ann circle. when officers responded, the driver hit the gas, ramming two cruisers. police say he didn't stop there but drove down the street hitting multiple parked cars. >> suspect vehicle was ramming police vehicles and additionally hit one officer in foot knocking him down. an officer did discharge their

firearm. >> one of the men in the car was shot and taken to the hospital. the other man in the car tried to run away but police were able to take him into custody. the two injured officers were not hospitalized. they are expected to recover. police in dublin are asking for the public's help in finding a little boy kidnapped by his biological mother who does not have custody of him. the 7-year-old was taken around 7:00 yesterday morning from a home. police say his mother kidnapped him with help from her exbrother-in-law, the boy's uncle. they are believed to be driving a beige 1998 lincoln continental with the license place 4 nb l417. they could be headed to the sacramento or tulare county area. call 911 if you see them. follow the latest developments on that story across our digital platforms including our free nbc bay area app. remember, you can sign up for

breaking news alert on nbcbayarea.com. now to a developing story out of central georgia. a police officer shot and killed after exiting his car while responding to a call last night. this happened in the city of ea eastmon around 9:30. the shooter is on the lose this morning. wisconsin, a crowd in milwaukee turned violent after police shoot and kill an armed man. police say the victim, a 23-year-old man, was armed with a handgun and was running away from a traffic stop when he was shot by the officer. this was the scene when angry protesters set fire to a police car and several businesses in milwaukee. one officer was taken to the hospital after he was hit over the head with a brick. three people have been arrested. back here in the bay area, two neighboring homes caught fire in san jose. that fire sparked around 9:00 at this two-story home.

it quickly spread to another nearby home. fortunately, no one was in those homes at the time. one firefighter was injured by the flames but is expected to be okay. crews will be on scene to ensure the fire doesn't reignite. the cause is under investigation. now to an incredible night in rio. swimmers from team usa ended their olympic run on top. we have a live look for you. it looks beautiful in rio there. athletes with bay area ties have been racking up more medals for the u.s. and swimming alongside michael phelps as he won his final gold. here >> a stunning day of competition for simone manuel days after making history as the first african-american female u.s. swimmer to win an individual gold. the stanford student sprinted to a silver medal in the 50 meter freestyle. later, the 20-year-old swam the

last leg of the 4 x 100 meter relay alongside dana vollmer and kathleen baker. the team took home the gold. >> i couldn't ask for better. just representing the usa is the greatest honor. to bring home medals is amazing. >> amazing describes what happened in the men's medley relay. michael phelps' final olympic race. the u.s. team won. ryan murphy started off breaking the world record for the 100 meter backstroke. helping propel michael phelps to his 23rd gold medal. he swam a dominant third leg followed by nathan adrian who clinched the gold in the final leg. >> it meant everything. that's the position that i love. seeing the guy take it home in the insane and get me a lead to help me build on it. >> michael phelps has 28 olympic

jenny says temperatures will warm up like yesterday. temperatures ranging from the 60s in the city to the 90s in the south and east bay. we are still three months away from election day. the latest poll numbers are in. hillary clinton is widening her lead over donald trump in battleground states. this nbc news poll shows clinton leading trump by five points in florida. in north carolina, she has a nine point lead over her republican rival. in virginia and colorado, she's now leading by double digits. experts say if clinton wins all four of those states in november, it would be virtually impossible for trump to win the white house. some dedicated clinton supporters met in oakland yesterday to plan how they can help her campaign. they formed after one person posted on facebook with the #swingstatepledge. some tell us they plan to run phone banks from home and dozens of others say they are committed to traveling to battleground

steshis fall. since many are volunteers for the first time, a leader in clinton's california campaign was there to offer their advice. local republicans gathered in san mateo for the all republican family picnic. it's an annual event to help kick off the campaign season in san mateo county. phones are invited to bring a dish to share with those who are politically like minded. republicans are a minority in the bay area. but those at yesterday's event say they are proud of their diversity and of their party. it's 6:13 right now. we have more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, the ongoing concerns over the water quality at the olympics. our ow aguirre takes a look. we have low clouds and fog in some areas as we look towards belvedere. we will have your weekend forecast next.

morning. a live look outside in oakland. you can see the sun trying to start rising and coming through the fog and low clouds there this morning. we will check in with jenny to check on your sunday forecast. three, two, one. >> they have done it again. space x last night launched a falcon 9 rocket into orbit and successfully landed the rocket in the ocean. it's another success for the plan to reduce launch costs by reusing rockets. the payload was a japanese communications satellite. we want to take you to rio where the water worries are back in the headlines. a belgian sailor says he got sick after racing on the bay. despite the polluted water, the games go on and so does the tourism. what exactly is in that water? here is our own jessica aguirre

from rio. ♪ >> they are the soul of brazilian life. sand playgrounds that stretch across 23 beaches for 45 miles in rio. a mecca for tourists, where live is marvellous for everyone. jennifer came to copacabana to see the famed beaches for herself. they did not disappoint. this california beach girl was surprised to find how pristine this paradise appears. >> i never thought it would be this beautiful and how clean the water is. there's no rocks like in los angeles. i'm amazed how pretty it is. it's not that dirty compared to santa monica. >> the famous beaches of copacabana are certainly sexy and beautiful. they are dirty and potentially dangerous. scientists have found a drug resistant super bacteria in the

water. in the beaches and in the lagoons where olympic athletes will be competing. just how dangerous is it? >> the danger is we have something in our body. it's part of our normal flora. because of unnecessary usage of antibiotics, they have created resistance with the bacteria. the sewage from the rio hospitals are going into the bay, which is a problem that there are multipling or niche the bay. >> the allure is too much to resist. >> i think it's safe. >> maybe not safe enough for elite international athletes. some have started to take antibiotics before arriving here in rio. some of them will be wearing special suits to make sure they don't get any contamination. the doctors suggest, the best advice, keep your mouth shut

when you are in the water and take a long hot shower when they get out. back to you. >> jessica, for us live in rio -- not live but rather that was last night, i should say. follow jessica's adventures in rio on twitter and instra gra . she will have a live report tonight. a look at our sunday forecast. a lot like yesterday? >> exactly. morning clouds and fog. sunshine for the afternoon. temperatures cooler as the winds pick up. it will be breezy if you are headed outside. there's a look at belvedere looking south. you can see it is foggy in the background there. temperatures staying cool because of that at 51 right now. right around the bay. in san jose where it's 61 degrees, a little warmer but still plenty of moisture in the air. you can see those low clouds in the background. slightly cooler today. the breezes will pick up by this afternoon as the weak trough moves through. that will continue tomorrow. we will see the patchy coastal

fog continuing for us. we will have the sea breeze continue as well. temperatures seasonal with coastal fog and afternoon sunshine over the next couple of days. visibility right now down to a mile in santa rosa, two in santa cruz. good for the rest of the areas. we are going to see areas of dense fog along the coast. that should clear out this afternoon. here is a look at what's going on. a couple of clouds headed our way. that's the trough rolling through. as it continues to push through today, that will increase the onshore flow. that sea breeze will continue. temperatures will stay close to average this time of year. with the deepening marine layer, it will be breezy, cooler today and tomorrow. we will see the winds pick up. speaking of the winds, by the afternoon, you will see 14 mile per hour winds in napa. that's today. by tomorrow afternoon, once again, they will pick up 10, 11 miles per hour. they will die down overnight and pick up as we head into tuesday. if you are headed out, it's the weekend. we will see some clouds around sonoma. mostly sunny and upper 80s, low

90s for the next couple of days. monterey, temperatures there will be in the 70s today. 65 tomorrow. kind of partly cloudy skies. afternoon clearing there. santa cruz should be in the mid 70s today. nice beach day at 75 degrees. staying in the low to mid 70s if you are headed towards the boardwalk. we have the giants game today, that's around 1:05. we will see partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the mid 60s. right now, temperatures around the bay area in the 50s for most areas, tri-valley, south valley in the 60s, topping out around 64 in san francisco, 70s around palo alto and oakland. in the 80s around sonoma and 93 in livermore. staying in mid to upper 90s inland for the rest of the week. for san francisco, temperatures will be in the mid 60s today. back into the 70s by the middle of the week. overnight lows in the 50s.

morning fog continues with afternoon breezes, staying breezy today and tomorrow. that sea breeze continuing throughout the week keeping that marine layer pretty thick. temperatures once again raining from the 60s to the 90s. pick a region and temperatures and you can find that around the bay area. >> hop in your car and find the weather you want. it's 6:22. we have more ahead on today in the bay coming up. >> that's what i'm talking about. >> el nino is helping to bring more whales to our coast. it's making things really lucrative for one local business. take a guess. we will show you next. for migrating whales.

1983. >> have your camera ready. >> everything brought me back to the sea. >> reporter: there was a time when the captain prowled the ocean looking for fish. >> i started on a fish boat. >> reporter: these days -- >> find a whale. >> reporter: he is chasing something larger. >> your whale watching adventure begins now. >> reporter: most days he is at the wheel of the kitty cat in search of whales as part of san francisco whale tours. >> from the minute we leave, that's all we care about is finding that whale. the first person to point out a whale gets a free pick off the snack bar. every vessel has a bible. it has never let us down. >> reporter: whether it's divine intervention or something else, the excursions beyond the gate this year have been more fruitful than normal. >> they have been in and out of the bay. they have been along our coast. >> reporter: instead of traveling dozens of miles out to sea, the whales are traversing just a short ride down the

start. this is a live look at san jose. the sun starts to shine on your sunday morning. we appreciate you joining us. jenny is here for anthony slaughter with a look at our forecast. >> good morning. beautiful weather notice bay area yesterday. >> it really was. in fact, i want to say we have been spoiled this summer. this has become the norm for us. >> sunshine, beautiful temperatures. we will see more of that today. it will be cooler. let's look outside at san francisco. you can see the low clouds still hanging over the city. 54 degrees right now. it's a little bit of fog along the coast. that should clear out. a light breeze. you can see the fog along the peninsula as well. temperatures will top out at 92 for the inland areas, 88 in the south bay and some 80s for the north bay. 78 for the peninsulpeninsula. 64 in san francisco. we will talk more about the

winds and cooler weather and what you can expect the coming week in a little bit. >> stay tuned for that. thanks. we want to tell you about developing news right now out of lake county. a wildfire is forcing families out of their hope homes this m. that community has been hit by destructive fire within the last year. this one is the clayton fire. it ignited late yesterday afternoon. it is spreading quickly. as you can see, the sky is filled with smoke. people who live near the lower lake area have been told to leave their hopes all together. this is just miles down the road from the area evacuated last september because of the valley fire. that massive wildfire destroyed more than 1300 homes and killed four people. cal fire is sending bay area resources to help fight the fire which is just 15% contained this morning. new details on the battle to

contain the fire in monterey county. 20 miles of highway 1 south of point sur state historic park will be closed this afternoon. this is so that firefighters can try to protect a containment line. the closure will be from the point sur light station to coast ridge road. it will begin at 2:00 this afternoon. it could last 24 hours. the fire is 60% contained but it continues to grow by the day. it has burned nearly 71,000 acres. one person has died and 67 homes have been destroyed. new details now from haywood where police were forced to open fire. around 4:30, police received a call about a stolen car. when officers responded, that driver suddenly hit the gas and rammed two police patrol cars. police say he didn't stop there but drove down the street

hitting mult iple parked cars. >> he was ramming police vehicles and hit an officer on foot in the area knocking him down. officers did discharge their firearms. >> one of the men in the car was shot and taken to the hospital. the other man in the car tried to run away but police were able to take him into custody. the two injured officers were not hospitalized. they are expected to recer. police in dublin are asking for the public's help in finding a little boy kidnapped by his biological mother who doesn't have custody of him. the 7-year-old was taken around 7:00 yesterday morning from a dublin home. police say the boy's mother kidnapped him with help from her ex-brother-in-law, the boy's uncle. they are believed to be driving a beige 1998 lincoln continental with the license plate 4nbl417,

a california plate. they could be headed to sacramento or tulare county. call 911 if you see them. follow the latest across our digital platforms including our free app and remember you can always sign up for breaking news alerts at nbcbayarea.com. a developing story out of central georgia overnight. a police officer shot and killed after exiting his car while responding to a call last night. it happened in the city of eastmon around 9:30. the shooter is on the loose this morning. in related news, developing in wisconsin, a crowd in milwaukee turned violent after a police officer shot and killed an armed man. police say that that victim, a 23-year-old man, was armed with a handgun and was running from a traffic stop when he was shot by the officer. this was the scene when angry protesters set fire to a police car and several milwaukee businesses. one officer was taken to the

hospital after he was hit over the head with a brick. three people have since been arrested in relation to this protest. back here in the bay area, two neighboring homes caught fire in san jose last night. this fire sparked around 9:00 at this two-story home. it spread to another nearby home. one firefighter was injured by the flames but is expected to be okay. crews will remain on scene this entire day through this afternoon to make sure the fire doesn't reignite. the cause is under investigation. a passenger in a gruesome car crash is seriously injured this morning. police are searching for the driver of the car. the crash happened yesterday morning around 10:30. the woman who was the passenger in the seat of the honda civic when she crashed flew into the air and landed on a metal fence. it impaled the female passenger. a witness says everyone was

trying to keep her calm. >> she was saying she couldn't feel her legs. another gal stayed with her the whole time, held her hand and asked her to stay calm and keep breathing. >> the driver of the civic ran from the scene and police are still trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved. >> if you see something, say something. that's what an east bay transportation agency hopes its riders will do with the launch of a new app. the tip now ac transit app allows users to report suspicious behavior or theft on transit systems. the system says the new app will help promote rider safety. civil rights groups fear it will increase racial profiling. a review of a similar bart app found users did complain about african-americans riders. now to an amazing night in rio. usa swimmers ended their olympic run with a bang.

missing. nbc bay area responds to a redwood city man whose son is missing. he is concerned an organization in florida is exploiting him and other parents. this stems from the collection jars you see at stores and restaurants displaying piths i of missing kids on them. >> he didn't choose this. that's the sad part. >> this little boy is missing. his father can tell you where he is. >> i think he's in the suburb of athens. >> reporter: greece. his mom, who is greek, took him

toagens in 2010 and never came home. >> she kept him there. >> reporter: imagine his surprise when he stopped at this gas station and saw his picture on a donation jar. >> my first reaction is to rip it out and take it with me. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: he had given his photo to the government backed national center for missing and exploited children. but not the group on the canister, child catch. child watch say charity that says it helps rescue missing children, which is supposed to include free investigative services and poster distribution as well as money for travel expenses. it is based in a house near orlando, florida. by phone, founder don wood conferred they copied the photo and put it on donation jars without asking. why did you choose to use andoni's picture without his father's permission? >> without his father's permission, there's no reason.

we just chose a photo that we thought had some potential for some success. >> reporter: as in fund-raising, to make money? >> no. as in trying to find him. >> reporter: child watch didn't take any additional steps to find adoni. how much money did you get from child watch? >> none. >> reporter: how much did they investigate on your behalf? >> none. >> reporter: how many posters did they print with your son's picture on it to help find him? >> none. >> reporter: child watch eventually removed adoni's photo, but only adoni's photo. are you using somebody else's photograph instead without their permission? >> yes. >> he didn't secure authorization from me to do this. >> reporter: charles has two missing kids, taken to africa by their mom. he learned from us that his son's picture was plastered on a donation jar. >> i was reviled. from seeing that photograph. >> reporter: we found henry's face in san jose, collecting

cash that did not go to his dad. how much financial support did you receive from child watch? >> none. >> reporter: how much investigative services did they do for you? >> none. >> reporter: how many posters did they print for you? >> none. >> reporter: robert lowery says child watch might not be breaking the law but it's violating national center policy. its photos are for raising awareness, like this, not raising money, like this. >> never forfund-rai fund-raisi purposes. it would be wrong do that. any other use of that we find questionable. >> reporter: that's exactly what's happening. child watch is actually a web of charities, called crisis relief network. tax filings show contributions of $3.8 million the past five years. >> are there a lot of problems with the crisis relief network? >> reporter: this man heads

charity watch, which scrutinizes non-profits. he is concerned they run five charities from a home. he says red flags the tax returns. for example, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fund-raising expenses, including telemarketers, leled awareness campaign. he can't decipher where donations actually go. >> i would advise donors to not contribute to crisis relief network. >> reporter: don woods insists his accounting is sound. he put us in touch with two parents. one said he received a couple grand. the other got $1,800. cha charles wonders where the rest of the $3.8 million went and how much don wood collected using his son's photo. >> he should stop. this is pure exploitation. >> reporter: one thing will stop, midway through our investigation, crisis relief told us it will no longer use kids' photos without permission.

good morning. we have been enjoying beautiful weather. that's going to continue for today. once again, we are starting off with low clouds and fog, especially as we look toward the coastal areas of san francisco. you can see low clouds hanging over the city there. that's keeping temperatures down just a bit. we're around the low 50s, mid 50s now, 56 degrees. humidity at 93%. that's because of the water droplets in the air. for the afternoon, we are going

to see some clearing, sunshine, but the winds will pick up. that will bring the onshore flow. that will keep us cooler into monday. patchy fog for the coastal areas. we will start to warm up. temperatures around average, dry, sunny and warm. it's going to be hot as we head into the middle of august. we do have visibility issues around santa rosa, down to 0 miles visibility there. two miles in santa clara -- or santa cruz. one mile at half moon bay. we have dense fog. should clear out. it is mainly along the coastal areas. you can see, we have a couple of thin clouds that are going to move through that. that's the trough. weak trough. what it does is turn the flow onshore. we will enjoy a sea breeze that will continue through tomorrow. keep things windy, especially for the afternoon. then bit middle of the week, high pressure will build off the coast. that will keep you dry and sunny as we head into the rest of the week. temperatures up a couple degrees by wednesday. that means hot weather as we

head further inland. the winds will pick up for the afternoon. breezy, up to 20 mileles per ho, especially into oakland and san francisco. it will pick up tomorrow afternoon. monday, around 3:00, around 11 mile per hour winds. a little calmer as we head into tuesday. we do have baseball going on. we have giants and a's. mariners taking on oakland. temperatures there will be in the mid to upper 70s. lovely day. sunny and windy. we will see mostly sunny skies. temperatures for the inland areas will be in the low 90s as kro t across the inland areas. 88 in san jose. 64 in san francisco. mid 70s as we head into palo alto and around santa cruz. we will have more sunshine there as well. if you are headed across the state, temperatures in the low 100s for the central valley. in the 60s and 70s for the

sierra and mid to upper 60s for the central coast. in the mid 80s to low 90s in southern california if you are headed down there. temperatures similar as we head into tuesday. here is what you can expect. in the upper 80s for sunday and monday. back to the 90s by tuesday and wednesday for inland areas and san jose. we will see temperatures back to the upper 80s by saturday. not an ongoing warming trend there. nothing too crazy. mid 60s for san francisco over the next couple of days. temperatures could get back to the mid 70s by the middle of the week. pretty nice weather for the middle of summer there. we will be back to 60s as we head into next weekend. if you don't mind the breezes, it's going to be nice. >> looks good. something to look forward to. 70s in the city. that's a good week. >> exactly. >> thanks. we want to show you an unusual police chase in morgan hill. the suspect in this one, this emu. we have photos of the emu trying to skirt police as they tried to
