working to get enough to train in san francisco, his hope is to get her here by spring. in san francisco, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. now, just ahead, we're going to have a live report from london, including an exclusive look inside the preparations for the world's biggest event tonight, that you'll see here. the pep talk that u.s. athletes got from the first lady. >>. new details on a suspicious device found near at&t park today. in the last two hours the authorities gave the all-clear. construction crews dug up an artillery shell in the mission bay neighborhood. here's the picture of the ordnance found at 3rd street and mariposa and transported to an area across from at&t park. two buildings and two house boats were evacuated and two streets were closed. officials from travis air force base determined there was no powder in the shell. so it was not dangerous. there will be no impact to the

giants game tonight. we also have some breaking news right now just in the past few minutes, a decision on the fate of the south bay's newest casino. arturo santiago is live in san jose with the late breaking developments. arturo? >> reporter: it's been a waiting game for most of the day, but we did just receive a few minutes ago with a spokesman with the casino that the owners of casino m8trix have received final approval from the chief of police. this whole process started about five years ago when the old garden casino was bought. in the spring of the last year they applied for a landlord license, call it casino m8trix and open it in a brand-new $50 million facility. the owners have been waiting since then for approval from the san jose police department and division of gaming control. one major change has been the gaming control's decision to not

allow card tables on the top floor for a while. they are eventually, will be able to open their doors. >> we've been working with the city for four, five years now. and so whenever dealing with the city, whenever dealing with a regulatory agency, you have to have patience. we will continue to work with them and iron out any issues if there are any. the owners are in current good standing with the city. current good standing with the casino. we don't see why there should be a delay. >> reporter: now, the casino expects to create 300 new jobs once it's up and running. as for that top floor card room, the owners are hoping to eve eventually have that in full operation in a number of weeks. the casino has received final approve to open its doorls, and this comes without any extra conditions. they are ready to open as early as next week. employees will be working 24-hour shifts both at the old garden city casino and also here in preparation of opening their

doors. live in san jose, arturo santiago, nbc bay area news. it is a bay area story that made world headlines. now the story of oscar grant is heading to the silver screen. production is under way in the east bay and will run through the end of the month. film crews have been busy shooting scenes at b.a.r.t. stations and other locations around oakland trying to recapture the 48 hours that led up to grant's death. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez sat down with grant's family today, as well as the local actress that landed a part in the film. back to london now. here's a live picture of the tower bridge over the river thames. excitement all the over the world as the olympics have officially begun. the british are beaming tonight as london takes center stage. the city is the first three-time host of the modern games. nbc bay area's phil rogers is live in london with the latest, where it's just after 1:00 a.m. right now. >> reporter: hi, janelle.

this is the "daily mirror," it says, simply ring it on. for the thousands of londoners watching the countdown clock in trafalgar square, the big night is finally here. morning chimes for big ben. led a three-minute chorus of bells across great britain. heralding the arrival of the olympics opening day, and echoing a nation's celebration. >> the world's coming over. all eyes are on us. it's just so exciting. >> reporter: the olympic torch made its way through hampton court maze and down the river thames to the tower bridge. >> to have a torch with london on it, and especially day, such a big day for the games today. even a small part of it is lovely. >> reporter: olympic organizers released this glimpse of rehearsals for tonight's opening ceremony. but details of danny boyle's extravaganza entitled isles of wonder are shrouded in secrecy, even from the ioc president.

a global television audience of more than 1 billion is expected to watch. along with 60,000 spectators in the stadium and more than 10,000 athletes. >> everybody has told me that it is just a rush are emotions, that you walk in and that's the moment you really feel like an olympian. >> reporter: bearing the flag for team usa will be mariel zagunis. >> to be their leader and the one selected by them to have that opportunity means a lot to me. i'm very, very proud to represent team usa. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama gave team members a sendoff at a morning breakfast. >> try to have fun. try to breathe a little bit. but also win. right? >> reporter: for london and its citizens -- >> welcome to london! >> reporter: -- the start of the games is a victory of its own. it almost goes without saying, that the bay area is becoming synonymous with olympic rowing. and for good reason. rowing coach mike patey is coaching the eight-man boat here

california same-sex marriage ban will be san francisco's newest roman catholic archbishop. the vatican announced today the pope has selected salvatory coralyoeny to replace george ne needhauer. he was also part of a statewide network of pastors who promoted california's prop 8, which defines maerj as only between a man and a woman. campaign finance records show he personally donated at least $6,000. >> the society needs a cultural mechanism to attach the fathers to their children and to the woman with whom he conceived that child. that cultural mechanism is marriage. >> he served as auxiliary in his hometown of san diego before he was promoted to oakland in 2009. prescription drugs marked up for millions. still to come at 5:00, the popular drugs that will be

was seeing a psychiatrist who specialized in schizophrenia. that information on james holmes leaked to reporters today. meanwhile, visitors continued to gather at the white crosses which honor the 12 people killed in the massacre. the carpenter who made the cross lives coincidentally also in a city named aurora. but in the state of illinois. greg dennis has also made crosses for other victims. oklahoma city, 9/11, columbine and now aurora, colorado. his work is free and only delivers the crosses if he's invited by relatives of the victims. he's inspired by the loss of his father-in-law who was murdered back in 1996. a less than friendly day for shareholders of facebook. shares of the menlo park company ended with a loss of 12%. closing the session just below $24 a share. the overall market, though, it

was a day of gains. european leaders insist they will stabilize their economy and the american markets rallied on that news. the dow closed above 13,000 for the first time since may. the chance for a lifetime of high school students. downtown college prep in san jose welcomed the class of 115 incoming freshman. they come from disadvantaged backgrounds, many of them the first in their families to move on to higher education. the students just completed a three-week summer boot camp preparing them for the school's science, technology and math. they also got a free backpack full of school supplies. >> it motivates me a lot. since like many of us can't afford it, can't buy our materials and stuff. and it's a big help for us. >> for many of us here, it's important, because our parents didn't get to go to college and we want their dreams, not only ours to come true. >> school officials say 98% of the graduates go on to college.

they're also five times more likely from people from similar backgrounds to graduate from college. and we are now just a few hours away from seeing the olympic opening ceremony right here on nbc bay area. >> athletes already posting pictures online of what it's like inside olympic stadium. a lot of excitement. and a spectacular show tonight. there's one place in the bay area where you can gather with hundreds of others to share the olympic fever. christina is live in redwood city at an olympic viewing party. >> hi, christina. >> reporter: hi, janelle. hey there, jessica. good evening to you at home. we are out here for the red, white and blue festival downtown redwood city at the courthouse. and there's a lot going to be happening out here, starting at 6:00. the live music is absolutely free. grab a chair, grab a cooler, grab a friend and get ready. because after the live music, you're going to have a chance to watch the opening ceremony on

christina. you can watch the opening ceremony right here on nbc bay area. our coverage starts at 7:30. >> she gave a shout out to jeff ranieri. he has the area forecast, and the forecast in london. >> definitely the life of that event. let's take a look right now at the marine layer and fog off the coastline building up on san francisco, and the upper peninsula. today, across the northern end of the coast near fort bragg, also eureka, that fog is starting to weaken. and temperatures will warm up for today. we have 82 here in livermore. also 79 in concord. real comfortable way to end that work week. live outside right now, what you'll find is a different picture than what we had yesterday. we do have the cloud cover, but also notice the blue sky. high pressure starts to move in. that is now starting to compress that cloud cover. and it is going to bring us more

sun for saturday and sunday. let's get you back to the weather boards and show you the exact pattern shaping up this warmer weather over the next two days. we have not one, but two areas of high pressure. one in the pacific, also one in the southwest. it's creating this conveyor belt of heat that we do think will continue to warm up our temperatures, anywhere from about five to ten degrees. we're not talking about totally hot weather at the coastline. but there could be beach weather mixed in there with 60s to 70s in the next 24 hours. i think the best chance of getting that 90-degree heat will get here as we head into sunday. we'll start with widespread 50s from the north bay all the way down to the south bay. par for the course this time of year. saturday, we go up about five to seven degrees in the south bay. 86 in san jose. 87 in sunnyvale. palo alto 79. close to 90 along the creek. back over the east bay hills, we'll have 70s in alameda to hayward. san francisco also will get in

on the warmest weather of the week with 70 degrees. 76 in san rafael. and also 74 in berkley. opening ceremonies tonight on nbc at 7:30. we're already looking towards the first day of competition which will be saturday. road cycling is what we're highlighting. mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60s. the venue for that is what they call the mall. what you'll find throughout sunday, a chance of a shower. by monday, we're clear. another chance of a shower by tuesday. so some speed bumps, but not expecting any kind of major storms to impact them. and here we go. yes, road cycling was featured at the first modern olympics in 1896. the course can range 86.9 miles to 155.3. and competing this weekend, the bay area's very own shelley olds from gilroy. go shelley on that three-day forecast. what you'll find is temperatures into sunday and also monday, we'll be warming up into the low and also the mid-90s. and we're going to stay with

a san francisco based drug wholesaler is paying out millions of dollars to 30 states, including california. the states claim the corporation one of the nation's biggest drug wholesalers inflated the prices of prescription drugs by as much as 25%, causing the state's medicaid programs to overpay millions of dollars in pharmacy reimbursements. california's share of the settlement is more than $23 million. mckeson claims it settled with the states to avoid the cost and inconvenience of going to court.

google breaking its promise. two years ago the company told regulators it would delete data if street u cars were picking up mapping areas in europe and australia. it included passwords and other personal information sent over unsecured wi-fi networks. today the company said it had accidently kept a small portion of the information. google apologized for the mistake but could face new fines for this error. we're back in a moment.

if you love garlic, this is your time. gilroy's famous garlic festival kicked off today. you can get a whiff driving through the city. this is the 34th year of the festival. the money raised will fund scholarships and community

activities over the next year. even the 4,000 volunteers who set up the festival and clean up when it's over are paid with their wages going through their donated charities. the festival runs through sunday at christmas hill park. usually your olympic teammates have your back, but in this case misty may-treanor. there is walsh trying to give treanor a trim. we're sure she made it out okay without sporting a new hair cut. never happened, they're bffs. >> i know. on the broadcast tonight the games begin. the global event gets under way here tonight in london with the opening ceremony and the whole world is watching representing the u.s. first lady michelle obama, who today talked about what the olympics meant to her growing up. while here in london, the continuing political fallout from mitt romney's visit and his comments to us about these games. and a look back at the last time london welcomed the world. the world was a very different place in 1948. tonight the gold medal winners from team usa who we've assembled to share their memories with us.
