walnut creek courthouse then rallied inside and outside the b.a.r.t. station nearby. b.a.r.t. briefly shut the station down. it is open again right now. nobody has been hurt. nobody's been arrested. >> this is just the latest in the dramatic face-off. police shut down part of ignacio valley boulevard today, the main drag through walnut creek and the central artery for getting up and down there. they did it just in case. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez has been there all day long. there were tough exchanges but nothing turned violent? >> reporter: there were some tense moments but both sides promised to stay peaceful and they did just that. you can see the demonstrators have cleared out. ignacio valley road has reopened as you can see after demonstrators from both camps faced off. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: for the first time since the deadly shooting of oscar grant people sympathetic toward former b.a.r.t. police officer johannes mehserle held a public rally to show their

support. the man convicted of involuntary manslaughter. >> he is sorry for what he did. it was an accident. and i know it cannot be undone. >> we are here to do what we can to support him and his family and to try and speak pseudo for him. i know we can't for his family but we're trying. >> lock him up! throw away the key! >> reporter: but mehserle supporters were met with plenty of people who feel the former cop is getting off easy. >> i think they're supporting a murderer. they feel like it's okay for a person to kill another person as long as you wear a badge. >> i feel that the supporters of mehserle are here because of whatever racial issues they may have. i don't think it's really based on the fact that they actually support mehserle. i think they're turning into a black and whitish unite. >> reporter: officers in riot
6:02 pm
gear stood watch as the two sides squared off. but though tempers flared things stayed relatively calm. mehserle supporters say the officer suffered enough. >> i do feel bad for him and his family. i feel awful for him and his family. he's got to be going through a train wreck in his mind right now, absolute train wreck. >> not so say grant supporters and grant's uncle feels the demonstration has mehserle's attorney written all over it. >> i wouldn't be surprised if race had more to do with this than anybody. he is a very skillful attorney and he's -- he has a lot of different tricks he will try. >> reporter: now, mehserle's attorney says nothing could be further from the truth. he said he had nothing to do with the rally but thinks it is wonderful and added he is certain johannes mehserle

appreciates it. again, after some tense moments the demonstration ended peacefully. no damage, no arrests. reporting live in walnut creek, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. who is he and what was he planning? those are the questions after a heavily armed man got into a freeway shootout with officers in oakland. that is youtube video capturing some of the 150 shots fired when byron christopher williams exch rs cefin o officers on interstate 580 in oakland. that incident just part of a violent weekend in oakland. cheryl hurd will tell us about the impact on a department still reeling from layoffs. let's begin with traci grant who has been tracking down the latest on this 580 gunman. traci, three guns, body armor. what have they learned about this suspect? >> reporter: well, they're still being pretty tight lipped about what they know and what they don't know. we're actually standing here
6:04 pm
near where the 15-minute shootout shut down 580 for hours yesterday. byron christopher williams is in a hospital not far from here recovering from gunshot wounds on his arms and legs. the police officers involved were not harmed but their colleagues have spent the last day just trying to figure out what this was really all about. >> based on the type of weapons in his possession, the amount of ammunition he had inside that vehicle, he could have easily wiped out 50 people. >> reporter: was that 45-year-old byron christopher williams' intention? that's what california highway patrol oakland police department, and the fbi are trying to piece together. police say williams, who has an extensive criminal record drove more than 130 miles from his home in groveland to oakland prepared for something evil. he wore body armor and his car was packed with a high powered rifle, a shotgun, a handgun, and an enormous amount of ammunition. >> right now we're trying to find out if there is any other
6:05 pm
underlying criminal activity this individual was responsible for or possibly in the future what he was going to do. >> this individual had a lot of rage, a lot of hatred, a lot of anger, and he reached a point in which he wanted to carry it out and basically make a name for himself. >> reporter: williams is facing attempted murder charges after exchanging about 150 rounds with ten california highway patrol officers after officers pulled him over on the freeway for driving dangerously. police say this is far from his first arrest. chp called williams a two striker who if convicted for this incident could spend the rest of his life behind bars. his arrest ranges from bank robbery to assault. his mother said he was upset with the government for its left wing leanings. >> he's got a lot of anger built up like a soda bottle just waiting to go off and apparently it went off finally. >> he was gun crazy. he had a lot of guns.
6:06 pm
>> reporter: we tried to reach byron williams' mother janice williams at the groveland home she shares with her son but she failed to respond to our requests for an interview. now, williams has said that some of those guns that her son had on him quite possibly could have come from the supply she keeps in her house. oakland police when asked point blank said they don't know if it's fair just yet to call williams a domestic terrorist. live in oakland, traci grant, nbc bay area news. >> not exactly a comforting thought. in the east bay for a job interview, then murdered on the streets of oakland. police are investigating that shooting crime and several other violent incidents in oakland over a very bloody weekend. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is live at police headquarters. cheryl, it hasn't even been a week since the 80 police officers were laid off. >> reporter: that's true,
6:07 pm
jessica. police are working a lot of hours especially this weekend. now, police tell me they don't want to blame this violent weekend on the layoffs but they say it's hard to ignore. >> they were struggling before they lost the 80 officers. >> reporter: roy says it's no surprise oakland police are struggling now. he is located close to where 45-year-old jinghong kang was shot and killed by a robber last night. police say he was at a late night dental appointment with a friend. he was in the bay area from virginia for a job interview with google. >> i've been in downtown oakland since 1970. every mayor and everybody says we're going to fix up, revamp, and i never see it. >> reporter: oakland police are feeling the pressure. last night police officers making a routine stop in the 1000 block of 8th street discovered drugs in a car only to be fired on by a sniper. >> any time you have somebody willing to shoot at the police, they're a danger to society,
6:08 pm
very dangerous to the public, and to officers. >> reporter: police are feeling the pressure of 80 officers gone due to budget problems. the entire homicide department worked this weekend, some 24 hours straight. >> other priorities that we usually handle during our regular shift are going to suffer. right now we're trying to find out who is going to do the followup for these type of investigations. >> reporter: tonight police are investigating a new shooting that happened just before noon at 79th and bancroft in east oakland. a motorcycle cop witnessed the drive by shooting here. tony wilson mcelroy's mom has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years. >> i think people are basically going to do what they want to anyway. >> reporter: there was an officer involved shooting on saturday with an oakland police officer and b.a.r.t. police officer and an oakland police officer shot and killed the man who was apparently wielding a knife. if you have any information to help oakland police solve any of
6:09 pm
these crimes, please contact the oakland police department. reporting live in oakland i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> all right. cheryl, thank you. a teenage boy plunged to his death during a family sight seeing trip to muir woods. the family was visiting from pennsylvania walking on the trail near the muir beach outlook when the 17-year-old fell off a cliff. when rescuers reached the young man they could not revive him. investigators say there is no evidence of any foul play. nothing doing at the state capitol. lawmakers say they are working on a budget compromise but today they spent more time taking jabs at each other than actually working on the budget. speaker of the assembly says the budget ideas on the table are all half baked. the republicans presented him with an easy bake oven and provided their recipe for a fully baked state budget. democrats held a bake sale in response and presented an empty pie crust at the republican pie. they say the republican solution is to cut everything out
6:10 pm
including jobs. the budget by the way between the entire bakeoff is now 19 days late. well ahead tonight the silicon valley breakthrough nasa is saying could forever change space age technology. >> and bringing shorts back for the summer. the new treatment to get rid of spider veins. >> and a donner party link to abraham lincoln, the amazing historical document written by the president. good evening. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. big-time cooling on our monday, only 76 in san jose, 60 in san francisco. sp'll let you know aringil w lirbengl tass spring air will be lasting coming up.
6:11 pm
6:12 pm
here in the bay area of course we're famous for our out of this world technology. today we actually saw the real thing. nbc bay area's business and tech reporter scott budman says it
6:13 pm
comes in a small package. >> it's a chip that in some ways turns a satellite or planetary rover into a sort of remote controlled vehicle. a small piece of technology used on the ground to control a much bigger piece of technology in space. >> two, one -- we have ignition! >> reporter: every company wants a big launch for its new products. some actually get one. this whip made by silicon valley's zylinx is on its way to space. developed here in the lab the new chip is not only ten times more powerful than its previous model, it's 100 times more resistant to radiation, making it nasa's new favorite semiconductor. it can even change course while up in space. >> as you can imagine, sending a person up to change a device or change the code is pretty expensive. with this you can program it up to the last day and after the mission is already going. >> reporter: it's that kind of
6:14 pm
flexibility that makes the chip ideal for things like the mars rover. there's one inside this rover here. future generations will get the new model. back on earth you can find programmable chips inside gps devices and televisions but it's the heavens that give these techies an extra sense of pride. >> having products that in fact enable you to be in space and, you know, discover that next frontier if you will, it is very exciting for us. >> reporter: sending silicon into space to help find what's out there. >> what does this mean to we consumers? if a satellite up in space has a faster chip it means faster performance for your satellite service like a tv, cell phone, or gps device. >> impressive. on the subject of cell phones, the latest iphone competitor is selling fast. droid x. the newest smart phone to run google's android operating system sold out over the weekend at most verizon wireless stores
6:15 pm
and industry analyst says his company called about 20 stores. all were sold out by sunday. the phone debuted thursday. android is the fourth most popular smart phone platform behind blackberrys, iphones, and the windows mobile operating system. the health services department is now offering free whooping cough vaccinations at a farmers market in concord. anyone 70 years of age or older can receive the so-called vaccine which protects against whooping cough, diptheria, and tut us in. the state health department today recommended women of child bearing years and seniors get the whooping cough vaccine. dead fish and clams are washing ashore at an antioch reservoir and no one is sure what's killing them. fishermen at the contra loemo reservoir began noticing the dead fish earlier this month. the situation is cause for concern because the reservoir provides drinking water for local residents. the contra costa county water
6:16 pm
district hasn't found anything toxic in the water. a spokesperson says numerous tests show the reservoir poses no threat to the water supply or to marine life. this is really fascinating. historians are now calling it a wowee moment. new documents that have been uncovered in sacramento show a direct link between president abraham lincoln and that ill-fated donner party. >> down this hallway, locked away in room 205 in a temperature-controlled vault now sits documents so treasured the state's principal librarian describes them as -- >> glory, gold, they'll last forever. >> these date back to the 1832 blackhawk war, rolls carried by the donner party that researchers have confirmed display the handwriting of a president. >> these are proof there is a direct link between the donner party and abraham lincoln. >> absolutely.
6:17 pm
>> reporter: so what is the link to abraham lincoln? right here on the top of this muster roll. recently a team of researchers from california, utah, and illinois determined these two lines written on july 10th, 1832, were indeed written by abraham lincoln during his military days. the names of a prominent frontiersman, even the commander of for the sumter written in. a military buddy of lincoln's carried these documents with the donner party 14 years later. >> in the whole story the donner party is one of the most difficult, painful, arduous journeys you could ever imagine in the history of overland travel. >> reporter: and now to know that these documents not only survived thanks to the efforts of james and margaret reid but also contain the original handwriting of abraham lincoln is -- >> just a wowee experience. >> reporter: these documents available for public viewing inside the california state library. >> very interesting. >> isn't that fascinating?
6:18 pm
beautiful handwriting. >> yes, he did. >> you learned penmanship back then for sure. let's turn things over to jeff ranieri. a very nice day outside. >> yeah, it is. we're off the mark from where we should be but it is chamber of commerce weather as far as i'm concerned for a lot of the bay area today and even what we've got coming our way. the radar does show dry conditions. we had thunderstorms over part of the weekend for the higher elevations. it is also dry there but we are looking at a fire weather watch near lake tahoe. if you're traveling up across the sierra just be forewarned. low humidity and also warmer temperatures will keep the fire danger up there. otherwise today anywhere from 60 in san francisco to 85 in gilroy, 86 livermore. plenty of 70s right in and around the bay here as not only the fog impacting our temperatures but a lot of cool air aloft, only 62 right now in oakland. humidity at 70%.
6:19 pm
so that's why even with the wind out of the northwest, which is typically warming for the bay area, we are seeing these cooler temperatures from the north bay to the south bay because it's really winning out when you combine in the fog at the lower levels with this cooler air associated with the northwest and it is helping these temperatures drop down and high pressure which typically warms us up this time of year is so far offshore that it's not going to have any impacts with us over the next two to three days. as we start off on tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. we'll look at low and mid 50s for the east bay, north bay, and also the south bay. colder spots will be up there in the north bay around santa rosa, could have upper 40s. by 11:00 a.m. we'll see some warming but not as warm as we would typically see this time of the year. 66 at livermore. 67 san jose. 65 in gilroy. we'll get a quick warmup as we head into the end of the 11:00 a.m. hour and also into the noon hour with temperatures that will be in the low to mid 70s. if you're doing any traveling we have delays in the midwest and also could find more delays here
6:20 pm
across the eastern seaboard with a separate area of showers and thunderstorms. back here at home for us, we'll be talking about how long this july cooling will stay in place. back to you. >> okay. thank you, jeff. well, california has been a state for 160 years so you would think there are plenty of maps around. apparently not. state and federal signs use laser beams in computers to make the most detailed maps ever of california's coast line. the data will be used to track ocean levels, beach erosion, flooding risks and be so detailed that boulders and telephone poles show up. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration says it will supervise the project. what is it about ecstasy that makes it a possible treatment for veterans haunted by their memories of war? dropping the ax. cldentrtme g osindoitreir fs padeanrtment org ins its doans isisrad ing response times. i'm done with all these lists.

6:24 pm
vicious and violent, we will come after you and we will put you in prison. >> the arrested were booked on charges of downloading child porn, some suspects were additionally charged with some drug offenses. persistent budget problems today forced the city of vallejo to close two fire stations. at 8:00 this morning stations 25 and 26 were shut down. a third station, 21, will stay open but with one fewer engine. a ladder truck will shift to a different fire house. vallejo was the first large city in california to file for bankruptcy in 2008. santa clara fire officials are trying to figure out what caused the recycling center fire that sent plumes of black smoke into the air. it happened at links recyclers just before noon yesterday. acrid smoke was released from burning plastic bottles and styrofoam packing. it led to a brief shelter in place warning. there were no injuries. if you have an emergency don't text the san francisco

police department. you may remember the city launched a text a tip program last august but they want to remind everyone that in a real emergency you need to call 911. the text a tip program is for nonemergencies like reporting criminal activity or supplying some tips. to text a tip to the san francisco police text the number tip, 411, and enter sfpd and the text followed by the message. a sigh of relief today, a much better monday for your money than last friday. wall street carved out modest gains today. analysts say investors, shaken by recent disappointing economic reports, went back to focusing on earnings numbers set to be released in the next few weeks. the dow regained 56 of the 261 points it lost on friday. the nasdaq was up 19 to close at 2198. the s&p 500 gained six to close at 1,071. gas prices are finally dropping across most of the nation but not here.

6:29 pm
tomorrow shapes up to be a day of financial relief for more than 250,000 californians. the u.s. senate will likely vote to extend federal unemployment benefits. but for a growing number of jobless workers who have exhausted their benefits even extensions won't help anymore. president obama wanted to put a face on the desperation of the unemployed. three faces, in fact. obama described his guests as middle class americans and said they shouldn't be used as hostages by senate republicans who have been holding up an extension of unemployment benefits. >> after years of championing policies that turned a record surplus into a massive deficit, the same people who didn't have any problems spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest
6:30 pm
americans are now saying we shouldn't offer relief to middle class americans like jim or leslie or denise who really need help. >> they've needed help since may when benefits expired for 2.5 million americans. that number includes 268,000 californians. another 147,000 workers in the state have exhausted their 99-week maximums and won't be helped by an extension and as things stand there are few signs of an improving job market. for example, san francisco's unemployment rate has nearly doubled to 9.6% since the financial crisis began nearly two years ago. about 43,000 san francisans are looking for work. president obama says they need assistance. >> they're not looking for a handout. they desperately want to work. just right now they can't find a job. >> reporter: a new extension of benefits will cost the government $34 billion. republicans say the treasury doesn't have it. >> we must live within our own
6:31 pm
means. we cannot spend what we don't have. >> well, tomorrow the democrats will have the numbers to out flank the republican resistance when carte goodwin is sworn in as west virginia's new democratic senator. he replaces the late robert byrd. bp is keeping a close eye on the containment cap in the gulf of mexico this evening. we want to show you a live look about a mile under water. you can see the cap appears to be working. remember this is just a temporary solution. bp is still drilling a relief well that will intercept with the fractured riser. as of this evening they're a hundred feet from that goal. none too soon because the pressure from the well appears to be causing a small amount of oil and gas to leak from the sea bed near the cap. the incident commander says right now no need to worry about that leak. >> there is a collective opinion of the folks talking about this that the small seepages we are finding right now do not present at least at this point any indication that there is a threat to the well bore.
6:32 pm
>> shutting down the well completely is at best still several weeks away. firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire burning in central washington this evening and you can see how much has burned already. nearly ten square miles of grass and sage brush up in flames. the fire started yesterday near the city of yakima. light winds today helped firefighters get the fire about 15% contained. three firefighters have been slightly injured. border security is being beefed up. today federal officials announced the 1200 national guard troops will begin taking up positions along the southwest border august 1st. the obama administration is trying to show a commitment to stopping cartel violence and illegal immigration by clamping down along the border with mexico. kidnappings, extortions, and thousands of deaths are blamed on drug cartels both in mexico and the u.s. >> we have seen a building on past efforts but also an increase in the resources devoted to the southwest border
6:33 pm
in an unprecedented way. >> troops will be stationed in california, arizona, new mexico, and texas. they will help the border patrol watch for smugglers and other people trying to cross the border illegally. nearly 60 years after the end of the korean war the u.s. is sending an aircraft carrier to the region as a show of force. the u.s. says george washington and three other destroyers will arrive in south korea for a joint military exercise. it is in response to the sinking of the south korean warship in march that killed 46 sailors. south koreans and an international team of investigators blame the north for that attack. meanwhile secretary of state hillary clinton will offer more information about the exercise with south korea later this week. a few hours ago she arrived in kabul in advance of tomorrow's 70-country meeting the future of afghanistan. many of the dignitaries attending say they are ready to pull their troops out of that region and soon. >> don't forget afghanistan is made of very proud people who
6:34 pm
feel extremely strong about their own management of their own future. >> afghanistan will be lobbying for greater control of the billions of dollars of aid it needs for development and will promise to take more responsibility for security. the country is also looking for more aid to create commerce and jobs. well, it turns out that ecstasy may be the remedy for some veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. a new study in the journal of psycho pharmacology says 80% of patients treated with ecstasy and psycho therapy no longer showed signs of ptsd. there were no side effects. the clinical trials involved 20 veterans with chronic ptsd for almost two decades. one san jose iraq war veteran says he would use the drug but only after more testing is done. >> they say it might help and i'd say that's a good thing but more trials need to be done on that. i wouldn't really use a street drug to treat somebody. that's pretty bad.
6:35 pm
illegal, number one, and not necessarily good for a person. but if it might help, it would be good. >> researchers say the drug allows patients to talk about the events that still haunt them much more than just therapy alone. the research group hopes to one day get the drug approved by the fda for those who suffer from this condition. >> interesting. the giants take on the dodgers right here on nbc bay area. a game preview just ahead. >> yes. and what is it with these blown calls lately? look at this play yesterday. cost the giants a a game. also coming up, pot and politics. california democrats decide whether to support the idea to make marijuana legal in california. and good evening. some big cooling on our monday with temperatures below average, only 76 in san jose and just 60 in san francisco. and even cooler for some of us for tomorrow. lets you know howthisou wid asen lom cupt,g .inll [ meg whitman ] if we could only do one thing, putting people back to work
6:36 pm
6:37 pm
would be the most important thing. the human cost of 2 million californians out of work is devastating, and i think, often, politicians forget about that because they don't see it every day. i see it every day. i think raising taxes on californians today is absolutely the wrong thing to do. we have to streamline regulations, we have to cut taxes for businesses, and then we have to stand up and compete. california needs to lead the nation again, and i think we can do it.
6:38 pm
meg whitman continues to woo the latino community in her campaign for governor. >> but our most important resource is our young people. >> that's the latest campaign ad
6:39 pm
in which she promises to fight for reforms that will make california's education system better. the tv spot shows her with young latino kids in classrooms. spanish subtitles roll on the bottom of the screen. whitman began her spanish language campaign last month during the world cup soccer games. after a long debate over the weekend the democratic party of california decided to pass on putt. a motion to support prop 19 was up. the proposition would legalize marijuana for recreational use and allow cities and counties to tax pot sales. the board voted 101-85 against endorsing the measure which voters will decide in november. instead the party is officially neutral. well, new research commissioned by the u.s. and canadian government shows treating people with the aids virus cuts their risk of infecting others. the study found that new infections plummeted in parts of canada where more people went on aids drugs. the drugs lowered the amount of

virus they had in their bodies and the chance that they could spread it. if you're interested in getting rid of those spider veins on your face and legs, now may be the time. doctors say a revolutionary new treatment called vein wave can make them instantly disappear. it works by delivering radio frequency heat right into the blood vessels using a small needle. for many the very small veins particularly in the nasal area the results are instantaneous. the vein goes away like an eraser just erasing the vein. >> patients are in and out in about 15 minutes with no down time. one treatment costs between $300 and $500. doctors say while it's great for getting rid of spider veins it is not designed to treat larger, varicose veins. the treatment is already offered at least in two clinics in the bay area. no hiding from these blown calls. too many cameras. why not use them? >> this is it. do we get instant replay? we've talked about it so long. it happened against the new york team so the focus is a little

sanchez, right, coming home with it. high throw. he calls him out and blanco gets the tag down. i don't know about that call. but the mets might have caught a big break. >> he was safe. >> oh, those aren't the giants announcers right there, folks. those are the mets announcers and when the out of town guys say the umpires blew it you know there was another bad call on the field for sure. >> all the new york tabloids today talking about the mets and giants saying, yes, the mets got one over because the ump blew the call. it's pretty interesting here. it's easy to see. i mean, we'll see the replay. >> why doesn't the guy seeing it
6:45 pm
see it? >> we can get instant replay here. this is a big game. the giants would have won the game end of conversation see you later. the giants are going to try to get into the playoffs this season. it's coming down to one or two games and wouldn't it be a shame if it came down to this. the big debate goes on. do we have instant replay? the traditionalist will say no but technologiwise there should be instant replay. we kind of joked about it. it's against a new york team so all the magnitude is there under the big spotlight. maybe major league baseball will accelerate the decision making process. this goes back to last month, the perfect game. should we have instant replay? this guy would have loved to have had it because he would have had the perfect game. it's going to be a big debate now but really the giants, even the mets catcher who had the play there said, you know what? ishikawa was safe. we should have lost the game. >> irrefutable proof, this
6:46 pm
clearly -- >> but also do you want to be at a baseball game where they stop the flow of the game and go upstairs? that's another issue. >> show it on the old jumbo tron. >> then we can just get world cup tickets. >> there you go. >> giants and dodgers, pregame right now. the game starts at dodger stadium in about 15 minutes. >> you'll be back in a few minutes as well. sailing for cash. a new study finds racing's premiere event could bring in more than a billion dollars to the bay area economy if held in san francisco. an economic study obtained by the san francisco chronicle says the america's cup could bring in $1.4 billion most of it benefiting the city. the event would generate 900,000 jobs, four times the impact of the super bowl, which typically generates between 300 and 500 million dollars. >> sweet. >> a lot of money. >> it sure is. >> jeff, what kind of weather
6:47 pm
