spots in the 40s in our coolest areas around the bay shoreline. we're mainly starting out in the mid 50s as we get you out the door on this friday. so hello santa cruz live look from the beach. a lot of sunshine today. the biggest takeaway? the coast is staying a little cooler today. in the 60s, but away from the coast we're getting even hotter. 80s return around the bay shoreline. then inland we're in the low 90s this afternoon. hi, sue. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. and i will say we have better news on the peninsula. let me update first though, a couple of things. we've got an accident over the altamont pass near north flynn that's out of lanes. it is not blocking, but it is adding to that 50 minute drive time up and over the altamont into livermore. now the we do have a few lanes open south 101 near san antonio. we had all lanes blocked with two separate accidents for about a half an hour. as you can see, we're now out of the purple and into the red, which, believe it or not, is an improvement. so traffic is starting to recover. you will see some northbound slowing on

101 through mountain view as well, but better news here and we'll update you in just a couple of minutes. >> thanks to this morning. president biden is back in the bay area. he's here for a series of campaign events that are part of a west coast trip. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live on the peninsula. ryan the president, likely to be greeted by protesters. >> hey good morning reggie. that is right. there is going to be a demonstration from pro-palestinian activists throughout the location where they are set to start gathering. they're calling on the president to stop sending military aid to israel. this comes after he himself has said that he will possibly withhold all aid going into israel if they proceed with the full invasion of rafa, the southern city in gaza. but president biden, arriving yesterday at moffett field, where he is now staying in san francisco, he boarded a helicopter to get there last night. he is here to raise money for his reelection campaign. the last time he was here in the bay area, he was doing the exact same thing. we spoke with political, political science experts who tell us the reason why presidential candidates come

to this area is because there's a lot of wealthy people here who get involved in presidential donations for elections. >> it's a cliche, but we are the nation's piggy back for these campaigns. there's a lot of people here with a lot of money and a lot of interest in who wins these elections. campaign donations are a way of showing how well you're doing. it's almost like people are voting with their dollars. >> the white house has not disclosed location of either fundraiser, but it is believed one will be in portola valley and the other will be in the south bay around palo alto. the first lady was also in the bay area yesterday visiting marin county. she is heading to southern california today. the protesters say they plan to create a human billboard. they want to showcase on the road, where the president will be traveling and the donors will be traveling. now, after the president is done here, he'll be heading up north to seattle, where he will continue his fundraising. but for now, reporting live in portola valley. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you. it's official. oakland international

airport has a new name despite major opposition, including a lawsuit from san francisco. the port of oakland, which is in charge of the airport, voted on moving forward with the name change. they released this new logo. it's now called san francisco bay oakland international airport. the board says it's about location, location, location. they conducted research. it showed a name change, could attract more passengers to oakland by letting them know the city is another gateway to the bay area, and a name came. >> change can certainly do that. that brings the knowledge for people. pass the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, really of understanding from people from around the world of where oakland is in this greater bay area. >> but the next steps are likely to play out in court. the san francisco city attorney's office issued this statement to abc seven news, saying it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate on an alternative name and avoid litigation. we have strong federal trademark infringement claims against

oakland, and they have given us no choice but to move forward with the next steps in our lawsuit. >> in the south bay, bart's long wait extension into downtown san jose is getting a big financial boost. half $1 billion from the federal government to get this project dt silicon valley extension is expected to cost more than billion. phase two will take trains from the berryessa transit center in north san jose through the downwn, and then up santa clara. vta is overseeing this construction, the agency's general manager says the announcement is significant for how the feds view this project. it's the first time they have kicked in money for it. >> it is a nationally important project. it is one of the most important projects in this budget, is the second highest project with an allocation. >> the project has faced escalating costs and delays. the six mile, four station line is expected to open in 2037.

>> a big change is coming to the way p-g-and-e's can bill its customers. the california public utilities commission voted unanimously to approve a flat monthly fee of $24.15 that will be in addition to what they pay for their actual usage. commissioners also approved an electricity rate decrease of 5 to $0.07 per kilowatt hour. the changes will be rolled out between the end of next year and the beginning of 2026. commissioners say the reduction could be an incentive for people to switch to electric vehicles, and appliances. >> so for someone who electrifies their home and vehicle, they would save an average of up to $44 a month compared to the status quo. and the reason customers are financially better off is because the new billing structure will reduce the price per unit of electricity by roughly 5 to $0.07 per kilowatt hour. >> a consumer advocacy organization called turn, short for the utility reform network, supports the changes, saying they promote stability,

especially in areas with more extreme weather. but its members say more needs to be done to lower rates. >> well, following the story of a man accused in two hit and run crashes, including one that injured a child walking to school in san francisco, he now faces several charges. rodney jefferson pleaded not guilty yesterday. he was charged with six counts, including reckless driving, causing injury, evading police and driving on a suspended license. he is being held without bail. the 54 year old was arrested near the exploratorium on tuesday morning and listen to this. police say jefferson hit a person in the tenderloin, then drove away. prosecutors said he went back to that scene and threw a $20 bill at the victim. police say he then hit a 14 year old student in a school crosswalk in north beach while trying to escape officers. >> abc news has learned. donald trump's former fixer michael cohen, will take the stand in trump's criminal trial on monday. his testimony will come

after a dramatic week in the manhattan courtroom. yesterday, adult film star stormy daniels wrapped up a second day of testimony that was filled with a tense cross-examination. defense attorneys questioned daniels about her alleged sexual encounter with trump at a lake tahoe area hotel in 2006, which trump denies. daniels claims she became lightheaded and felt the room spin after seeing trump in his underwear. the defense was not convinced that story was true. >> another thing that was just totally not didn't believable was like, and i went to the bathroom at our dinner, and when i came out of the bathroom, he was there just in boxers and a t shirt and i almost fainted. >> trump's defense team filed a motion for a second motion for a mistrial, saying daniels testimony was so graphic that it was extremely prejudicial. the judge denied that motion. >> 609 on our friday, we'll take you into the east bay hills, looking towards the west, and you can see we have clear skies.

we are tracking a thin layer of fog along the immediate coastline. pretty much from half moon bay up towards the golden gate bridge. it's just an indication the coast will actually see cooler weather today. but it's a different story inland. we're actually getting hotter inland compared to yesterday. inland today we're going into the low 90s for the first time this year, looking at highs today versus the forecast, we will find those areas anywhere from about 11 to 17 degrees warmer compared to their averages in the 60s and 70s. look at your weather wellness today. air quality good to moderate. pollen levels are medium to high. now your main offenders are grasses and trees and the uv index and eight out of an 11 that is very high. put on that sunscreen because we'll have a lot of sunshine today. a little bit cooler for the coast compared to yesterday, but we're even hotter away from the coast where those 90s appear from concord, antioch to fairfield to santa rosa, it's just warm around the bay shoreline with most of us going into the 80s,

all crews are still looking for any potential victims, including animals, as more rain is expected in the coming days, more than 165,000 people have been displaced from flooded homes and rescued by boats and helicopters. governor newsom is calling on half moon bay to expedite housing for farm workers or face legal action. there's been a spotlight on housing in that community. after a mass shooting at two mushroom farms last year. >> i felt like an attack, you know, half moon bay is a priority, you know, to build farmworker housing, low income housing. >> do you think the process is taking too long? >> it's adequate time. >> we've done a lot for this community. now it's time for the county to do something for us. >> there have been two meetings without a vote. the governor

wants a decision next week to get in accordance with state law. the mayor says governor newsom should help fund the housing and expedite the permits . the planning commission is set to meet again may 14th. new at six a new housing development at stonestown galleria has been approved by the san francisco planning commission. the chronicle reports the commission unanimously approved that project yesterday. it would add 3500 housing units and a walkable town center to the parking lots of the mall's lot. the plan now needs to be approved by the board of supervisors. it will also include a child care center and six acres of parks, plus a new main street along 20th avenue for more shops and restaurants. capitola iconic wharf will reopen to the public in august. the city council approved a draft design plan last night. it includes a new entryway, fish cleaning station, public restrooms, capitola boat and bait also announced it will reopen this summer and fall. the city is planning several public events to help boost the economy in the downtown area. the wharf has been closed since last year,

when it got severely damaged in our storms. >> much of the bay area felt the heat yesterday and of course the great weather had people packing beaches. this was the scene yesterday afternoon at ocean beach in san francisco, though not so much packed, but these people really enjoying the sun. >> like so many others, we literally went to the least packed beach. i'm telling you, there were a lot of i was there. there are a lot of people now, so that wasn't there. >> but elsewhere i've seen the pictures. i've seen videos. i've seen people were out a similar scene here at pacifica, at linda mar beach. you can see all the people dotted across the sand with that famous waterfront taco bell. and then in the south bay, a truly perfect day to stop and smell the roses. just look at how gorgeous it was at the san jose municipal rose garden. i bet it smelled great too. and then the north bay. the warm weather means a mix of fun and preparation. 250 seasonal cal fire crews are back on duty as they prepare for the start of fire season. cal fire also has

firefighting aircraft stationed at its sonoma hotter temperatures and windy conditions can dry out vegetation, which leads to a higher fire danger. abc seven news was along the russian river yesterday as people took advantage of the warmer weather to enjoy the water. visitors say they are happy the rainfall has slowed. >> green is great, you know we do need it. but, i know it's getting a little bit tired of the rain. for a while i was like, we i'm missing the sun, so it's nice to sort of be out. >> officials are reminding if you're going out on the water this weekend, stay safe, wear a life jacket. >> we knew raging waters will be reopening in san jose this summer, but we didn't know it was going to have a new name. now we do. it's going to be called kali bunga water park. new signs have now gone up. the popular park was set to close for good, but the city managed to find a new operator. i just feel like you have to. there has to be some kind of physical manifestation after you say like kali bunga, right? >> like, hang on bro. i think that was it. i think you did it.

when you have calm winds that allows any heat we attained in the afternoon yesterday to radiate away from the surface, and that's what we're seeing this morning. it's cooler out there in the 40s and in the 50s. future tracker showing you we warm pretty quickly again this morning by 10 a.m. 60s and 70s for most of us. and then we're already into the low 80s by lunchtime. and our warmest areas now today there's two differences compared to yesterday. the coast is actually cooler today compared to yesterday, with a minor influence from onshore winds, but inland were even hotter than we were yesterday. we'll go into the low 90s for the first time this year, a high of 75. in the city today, a warm 80 in oakland were closing in on 90 degrees in san jose. today we'll hit 90 in santa rosa. similar story for concord, antioch, fairfield. it's just a hot may day inland today, but the coast about ten degrees cooler today compared to yesterday in the mid 60s and low 70s. friday night. it's one of those nights where it's going to stay mild. it'll be nice to be outside. so anything you're doing outdoors this evening, you

call it calumny. as uc berkeley is about to get a big payout up to $10 million a year through the 2029 2030 school year to shore up its athletic department . this is the fallout from the breakup of the pac 12 conference. ucla is moving to the big ten, while cal ended up going to the acc. projections show cal will make a $50 million, will make $50 million dollars less, i should say, in media rights revenue due to the change, which is the reason for the payment. uc regents are expected to finalize the deal next week. now there's a new face at the oakland zoo. a 13 month old giraffe is settling into his new home after traveling from audubon nature institute in louisiana, and you

upset with his handling of the israel-hamas war as he attends campaign events in the bay area. the president arrived last night. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is live on the peninsula. with what we know about the plans for today, ryan. >> amanda. good morning. the white house has not confirmed the locations of these two fundraising events, though we do believe one of them is going to be here in portola valley and the other one in the south bay at palo alto. the school district in palo alto, letting students and staff and parents know that they're going to be closing some schools early, ending the day early, due to traffic, as well as some other concerns to avoid those. the president arriving last night at moffett field, where he then stayed in san francisco overnight. he's here to fundraise for a campaign for his reelection campaign. the last time he was here in the bay area, he was doing the exact same thing. we spoke with political science experts who tell us the reason why presidential candidates come to this part of the country for campaign donations is because of the wealthy people who live here, and those wealthy people who are willing to contribute to

those campaigns. >> if you're running a hot senate campaign in montana or a tight house race in pennsylvania, you're going to try to come to california and do a fundraiser, because, again, there's a lot of people here with a lot of money and a lot of interest in helping out. >> the chronicle reports tickets for this event cost between 6600 and $100,000. not cheap. if anybody was interested in going to that now after his campaign events, he does have plans to go up north to seattle to continue his fundraising event. the first lady was also in the bay area in marin county yesterday. she is on her way to southern california today, but for now, reporting live in portola valley. ryan curry abc seven news thank you ryan. >> new video into the newsroom this morning. police at the university of pennsylvania have moved in to clear a pro-palestinian encampment that's been there for the past two weeks. officers dressed in riot gear and armed with clubs started tearing down tents and making arrests. around 3 a.m, after weeks of being told to disband the protesters have

refused to leave until their demands are met. those demands include that penn disclosed its investments and cut ties with businesses that support israel. graduation season is underway in the bay area. cal state east bay kicked things off with their commencement yesterday. this was the first of nine ceremonies between now and sunday to celebrate the class of 2024. cal state east bay has remained peaceful, even though protests are, of course, happening at other college campuses around the bay area. yesterday's graduation went off without a hitch. cal's graduation is tomorrow. the university says everything is going forward as planned, despite the campus protests. routine security will be in place at california memorial stadium. in addition to the big graduation, there are 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events around campus. hundreds of ucla faculty and staff are demanding the resignation of their chancellor, gene block, for the way that he handled clashes between protesters and counter protesters. the resignation is one of three demands submitted in a letter, with more than 800

>> now it's their morning money report. more bay area job cuts on the table. google and electric car maker rivian automotive are reportedly getting ready to make cuts. the mercury news obtained filings with the state edd, showing both tech companies plan to lay off dozens of workers next month. google is trimming 57 jobs in san francisco. that's on top of google's recent decision to cut 50 jobs in sunnyvale. rivian intends to cut 29 jobs in palo alto. it's also reducing staff in southern california. opinions of the housing market are at all time lows. a national gallup survey says 79% of people think that this is a bad time to buy a house. that's the worst perception in the survey's history, and it's slightly lower than last year. optimism about home buying first began to trend down in 2003. researchers say all the pessimism is based on record high prices, limited supply and high mortgage rates. take a live look now at the new
