april 26. look who's here. yes, that's julian glover. >> it's like opposite day right now. freaky friday i don't know what's happening right now. >> good morning. >> it's good to be with you all. how do you feel? >> uh- barely awake. >> good. there you go. we love that. >> the caffeine will be pumping soon. >> okay. >> kick in. and this morning we're tracking windy weather today, so friday starts out with some drizzle out there. live doppler seven showing you we are tracking a couple of cells. this is all ahead of a cold front that will bring about some gusty winds later today. you can see those showers along the coast. right now. we have a couple of light showers over the city, some moving through the east bay shoreline. these will be short lived. we'll keep it in the forecast through about 9 a.m. this morning. and then it's all about the winds later on this afternoon. so the big headline today is we're wind whipped afternoon wind gusts between 20 and 40mph. later on today, winds have already picked up. look at some of these numbers. oakland we're gusting to 30mph right now across the city with some light showers. you have winds around 25mph, and those winds will just continue to ramp up as we head throughout the afternoon temperatures. right now we are

in the 50s, so you'll be out and about for the next couple of hours. i would take the umbrella with you, but you can get rid of it by about midday. so the day planner keeps that chance of drizzle in here early on. and then it's all about that windy afternoon and brighter skies later on today we'll take a much closer look at those winds. and then we have a wonderful weekend on the way. we do have that in a few minutes. >> looking forward to that. thank you drew. developing news this morning on the growing tensions on college campuses across the country. a pro-palestinian demonstration at stanford is getting bigger. a man is at the live desk with how this protest is playing out so far. yeah, reggie, at least 100 students have set up camp at stanford's white memorial plaza. >> police have not made any arrests, and they have not cleared the area. the group started chanting after it got dark last night. up. students, educators and community members are taking part in this people's university for palestine encampment. the director of public relations at stanford said, quote,

disruptions of classes and university events are prohibited and that overnight camping is likewise prohibited under university policy. but we haven't seen law enforcement take any action. organizers say they are aligned with other schools across the country. they are demanding their college separate themselves from any companies or organizations that advance military efforts. in the israel-hamas war. >> we need to stand with the students who are standing with the people in gaza, and not enough people are standing up. so the students actions are so inspiring and such an example to the adults and to our elected officials who have, really not been speaking out and standing up the way they should. >> the university is monitoring the protest. students say this will be a multi-day demonstration. back to you at the desk, reggie. >> thanks, amanda. a growing number of protests on campuses across the country are turning violent images of demonstrators clashing with police have flooded social media. here's abc news reporter andrew dymburt.

>> overnight clashes between police and pro-palestinian protesters intensifying on college campuses. at ohio state university, police in riot gear approaching hundreds of protesters, some of them fighting with officers and criminal trespass. dozens of people detained earlier in atlanta. a state trooper was seen repeatedly tasing a man at emory university, the georgia department of public safety says the man was resisting arrest after responding officers were met with protesters who threw bottles and refused to leave, adding troopers deployed pepper balls to control the unruly crowd but did not use tear gas. >> i saw police knock students to the ground. >> dozens of people also detained at emory, including this professor. can you call the philosophy department office and tell them i've been arrested across the country more than 400 people were detained yesterday on dozens of campuses as

pro-palestinian protesters demand schools divest from companies that profit from ties to israel. protesters near chicago now setting up tents at northwestern university. officials say school policy prohibits the encampment, but protesters formed a human chain to prevent police from pushing through. in southern california, an encampment at ucla has grown to hundreds of people, and usc has now canceled their main graduation ceremony due to the protests. andrew dymburt, abc news, new york. >> and we do have continuing coverage of the campus protests across the country and here in the bay area on our website, abc seven news.com. you'll see a link right on our home page. >> this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a crash that killed a family of four in the east bay. the famy's r slammed into a tree on foothill road near stone ridge drive in pleasanton. it happenededneay night. the electric car burst into flames and the fire was tough to put out. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spoke with people who knew the family. they

were over at our house back in december, loved ones, friends and strangers are paying their respects at the scene of a fiery crash that killed a family of four, pleasanton police say. >> around 9 p.m. wednesday, a vehicle hit a large oak tree along foothill road. a mother, father and two children under the age of 15 were inside and it's very shocking, uh- you know, very nice person, always, you know, energetic. hassan sheikh said he worked with the father at a south bay tech company. >> when i heard it, i said, you know, let me go towards that location and at least figure out what happened. >> just standing here, you can see how intense the crash was. you can still smell and see the remnants of the fire. police say they're still working to determine a cause from sky seven, you can see the amount of foam firefighters used for fire suppression. our crew found parts labeled with the logo for vinfast, a vietnamese electric

car brand. but authorities have yet to confirm the type of vehicle involved. the car reportedly reignited a few times while investigators were clearing the scene. the two children attend schools within the pleasanton unified school district, a spokesman said. they're providing extra support for students and staff during this time. >> we understand that the human impact that that that has on on our families, that's what we've been focused on all day. we've provided some extra counseling and support resources to students on campus. we have wellness centers at our middle and high schools. >> police say they're unsure if speed or alcohol played. factors in the crash. foul play is not suspected. >> it was a great family, a great personality, they'll definitely he will be missed. he was a great father, a great coworker, and a great person overall in pleasanton. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> prepare yourself for detours and delays. with a stretch of

one east bay interstate shutting down this weekend, caltrans will close a portion of six 8-80 for repairs at nine tonight. it won't reopen until monday morning. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live in pleasanton to break it all down for us. hi, ryan. >> yeah. hi, reggie. good morning. it's worth caltrans says will make life easier for drivers in the long run. but for now, you got to be ready for these delays and these changes. so here's what it's goin to look like this coming weekend. starting tonight, 9 p.m. six 8-80 will be closed from the 580 connector down to koopman road. it's about nine miles that's going to be shut down. so here are dours. if you're going to the south bay from the east bay, 880 is going to be the best routes you can take 24 or 580 and then head down south. if you're coming from further east, such as tracy highway 84 will connect you back to southbound 680. past all the closures. it's part of a caltrans plan to improve 680. they've done this several times in the last couple

of years, and as recently as this past march. but they do say this might be their last full shutdown. they tried first to do it in january, then again back in february, but the rain forced them to push it back. they're preparing deteriorating road they say will make it safer for drivers. closing it down for one weekend also saves saves them time in the long run to make these repairs. caltrans says it would take about 40 full nighttime closures to finish the job. so instead of doing that, they're just closing it for a weekend. there will be plenty of signs up warning drivers about where to go. chp will also be here around the time the closures will start to start deterring traffic, moving drivers elsewhere. so just be prepared for that. give yourself some extra time, especially knowing that there's only going to be really one route heading to the south bay in the east bay might be some added traffic, so just be mindful of that when you're heading down this weekend. but for now, reporting live in pleasanton. ryan curry abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you. now we'll take it to the north bay, where caltrans repaving project will shut down a 21 mile section of

westbound highway 37 for a second straight weekend. that's going to start tonight. and once again, that runs through monday morning. the eastbound lanes will be closed for the first two weekends of may 509 this morning, and we are waking up to areas of drizzle this morning along the coast and in parts of the east bay. >> here's a live look at our sfo camera this morning, where the airport is reporting some light drizzle this morning. a temperature of 56 degrees. what's happening is that we do have a cold front that is currently on top of us right now, supplying us with this early morning chance of some pockets of drizzle that will linger until about 9 a.m. this morning, and then it's all about winds really picking up pretty quickly this afternoon. here's live doppler seven. some sporadic drizzle along the peninsula, some around the east bay shoreline, but this is only going to last for the next 3 to 4 hours. then it's all about the winds later on this afternoon looking at the wind gusts forecast. it's breezy right now in spots. oakland is gusting close to 30mph right now. it's

shin has requested a new trial. this comes after the court threw out the case due to the judge committing what they call egregious errors. the court determined the judge allowed unfair testimony during the trial. that wasn't part of the case against the ex hollywood mogul. weinstein's case helped launch the metoo movement, where women across the country found a voice to advocate against rape and sexual misconduct. >> this was not about the witnesses or the victims who testified against mr. weinstein. this was about a strategy the prosecutor used bringing people to speak about him and not charging for those crimes. that's what this is about. it's not in any way a detriment to their credibility. >> weinstein remains in prison for a different 2022 rape conviction in los angeles. >> now to a major change that could be coming to southwest airlines, as the company faces

some new financial challenges amid a the company's ceo is revealing they might end one of the policies they are most known for. >> julian, if you've ever flown southwest, you know the airline is known for having open seating and no separate classes on its planes, but that might change during an interview yesterday, ceo bob jordan revealed the company is considering ending that policy and possibly even adding new classes of seats on its planes. it comes as the company says it lost $231 million in the first quarter. southwest also revealed yesterday it will stop service to four airports in august as it works to improve profitability. you can see them on your screen here. one thing that won't change free bags jordan said. people choose southwest because it doesn't have bag fees. back to you both at the desk, julian. >> no more open seating. that would be a big deal. thank you. amanda. now to some breaking news out of san francisco. a two alarm fire burning a building in the presidio heights neighborhood. you can see what it looks like in this photo posted to social media by the fire department. we know at least 60 firefighters are

working to contain the flames right now. heavy fire coming from all four floors of the structure. residents in the area are being asked to shelter in place because there could be some heavy smoke around. we are working to gather more information about if there might be anyone inside of the building. we'll bring you that as we get it. >> san diego county vowing to rebuild the oceanside pier after it caught fire yesterday. firefighting boats and helicopters battled that inferno. the structure at the end was once a restaurant, but it closed down three years ago. the roof caved in on a smaller grab and go shack called the brine box. don't know the cause here. oceanside pier was built in 1888 and has been rebuilt twice in its lifetime. >> college students are getting involved in the revival of downtown san francisco's failing shopping center. government leaders heard ideas for the former westfield mall earlier this week, and the wedding proposal came from five stanford students. it includes a massive co-working space and a green space, connecting market and mission streets. a new concert

venue would go where the century movie theater closed last year, and there would also be a large food hall, 300 new apartments and some other entertainment venues too. the plan would require a $1.1 billion investment. oh, just a little bit of pocket change. >> that's not cheap. starting this weekend, you'll be able to rent skates at golden gate park. they'll be available saturdays and sundays from 11 to 6 p.m. at skating place. there's a little apostrophe at the end of that skating. >> that means it's fun. reggie. >> that does? yeah, the city's recreation and parks department says safety gear will also be available to rent. skating at the park dates back decades, and skate in place was officially established in 1986. i never knew that that's what it was called. i mean, i know where that is, right? but i've never heard it referred to as skate in place. >> it also sounds like you're not going anywhere. you're just staying in place. right? like yeah, like you're right. >> like i'm trying to skate places, right? okay. trying to go places. >> i'm not trying to, like, wreck tradition here, but i

seven along with satellite. we have that front that is essentially on top of us right now, supplying us with that drizzle early on and then kicking up those winds later today. you can find those winds are already pretty active in many cities, gusting to 24mph. in novato, 25 in the city, 30. that current wind gust in oakland, 21 in half moon bay but area wide will see these numbers increase over the next 8 to 12 hours. here's future tracker wind speeds 4 p.m. this is where we're kind of hitting the peak of our winds between 20 and 40mph, and even tomorrow it's not as windy, but we still have a bit of a breeze to kick off the weekend here on saturday. when it comes to cloud cover, those clouds really break down pretty quickly today for afternoon sunshine with those winds racing through here later on today and then tomorrow, it's going to be a mostly sunny start to the weekend with dry conditions. today it's all about those winds. later on we'll have temperatures basically in the 60s for daytime highs, but if you have any friday night plans,

app being active. the company behind the popular app now saying it would rather shut down than sell off its algorithm. thanks for joining us here. it's friday, april the 26th. >> we're going to start with a look at your forecast. hi, drew. >> hey. good morning. so we have a little bit of wet weather for the next couple of hours. all associated with a cold front that is currently moving through. here's live doppler seven this morning. we have some of those showers through the city, down along the coastline of the peninsula, and even parts of the east bay hills and the east bay shoreline near fremont. right now we are seeing some light showers. these will linger until about 9 a.m. this morning. then the skies brighten up and the winds do pick up. so the big headline today is that we have a windy pattern. we are wind whipped this afternoon. those winds will gust 20 to 40mph. they're already elevated this morning we can see across the city and into the east bay those winds are close to 30mph already. temperatures right now as you head out the door. we're in the 50s, and if you will be out for the next couple of hours, certainly take the

happening tonight. caltrans is shutting southbound 680 so crews can continue to repair that road. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live in pleasanton. ryan >> okay. let's tell you about a memorial service for an oakland police officer who died as a result of an on duty crash. is set to happen at 11 a.m. officer jordan wingate died on saturday from injuries of a 2018 crash. he was on his way to a call when he crashed into another car and a semi truck. the 29 year old ended up in critical condition and was forced to medically retire. today's memorial service will be at three crosses church in castro valley. we'll get to that live report from ryan curry coming up. now to the new developments in the war between

israel and hamas. the hamas run health ministry says more than 34,000 palestinians have died since the conflict started on october the 7th. the ministry also says there are still many victims trapped under the rubble, their buildings leveled by israeli attacks have made it hard for rescuers to reach them, local israeli media reports. prime minister benjamin netanyahu approved a ground operation in rafah yesterday, but the israeli defense forces is still waiting for instructions. palestinian children in gaza are sending a message of thanks to students at colleges in the u.s, though students are protesting to demand an end to the israel-hamas war. a group suspended by harvard university shared this video of children showing their appreciation. we love the students of harvard university of harvard university. >> we respect the students of yale university. thank you. the students of columbia university will speak to you. we hear you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

we love you. >> pro-palestinian demonstrators have been protesting at several universities across the country. they're calling for a cease fire in gaza and for their schools to divest from companies linked to israel. >> columbia university's faculty senate is fearing a vote to censure the school's president. so they are redrafting a resolution to admonish her, according to the new york times. senators will meet today to vote on that resolution. they're worried that a censure vote could result in her removal during a critical time for the school. an admonishment would be more of a warning. protesters there have set up an encampment urging columbia to cut ties with israel. in southern california, usc canceled its main graduation ceremony because of the ongoing protests and safety concerns. 90 protesters were arrested on campus wednesday night during clashes with police. usc previously canceled a graduation speech by a pro-palestinian valedictorian. many members of

this graduating class have already missed out on a high school graduation ceremony, because that was during the first months of the pandemic. that includes pleasanton native mira popli, whose parents have been planning her college graduation celebration for months. >> 2020 being the covid year, she didn't get a high school graduation. so the first thought was, oh my god, you know, not again. >> tickets have been bought. i mean, we have people coming from all over the country in southern california. if they cancel, it's going to end up costing us thousands of dollars on top of the tuition and everything. >> it's a culmination of our four years at usc, and to have it pulled away, i think, is, is a mistake on usc's part is disheartening. and i would have liked to see usc protect their students and protect their their voices more. >> so what's interesting is that usc officials are canceling the main graduation, which would have had 65,000 people there. the smaller ceremonies for the individual schools and colleges will still go on.

>> cal poly humboldt is closed today because of ongoing protests there. students took over one of the buildings earlier in the week. yesterday, the faculty passed a vote of no confidence in the president of the university and his chief of staff. it demands their immediate resignation. the free palestine camp set up at uc berkeley has remained peaceful since students first pitched up tents on monday. the demonstrators say they have no plans to break down their camp across from sproul hall. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke with students about their demands. >> day four of the free palestine camp at uc berkeley, and students say they don't plan to give up. >> it is important for me to be out here because i am outraged and devastated by what's going on in gaza and the occupation more broadly, cal senior lev collins, who is jewish, knows the possible risks of being out here just three weeks from graduation. >> but he says they're building on similar campus protests from the 1980s to end apartheid in

south africa. >> they camped out on the same steps that we are now. and so we draw a lot of inspiration from that. >> campus leaders say there are now more than 70 tents at sproul hall. the students say they have four main demands. first, for uc berkeley to officially declare that what is happening in gaza is genocide. they also want cal to divest from companies with ties to israel or weapons manufacturing. and for more transparency, that's one of our other like sub demands is disclosure of these of these investments so that we can get a better understanding of where our tuition is actually going. they also want berkeley to cut academic ties with israeli institutions and finally, to provide more security for palestinian students and their allies. a confrontation between law student malacofauna and dean of the school of law, irwin kominski, and his wife, law professor catherine fisk, went viral after afana tried to speak about the war in gaza at a dinner at the couple's house. >> i myself never thought that a professor would be able to put her hands on me and be able to walk away without any consequences, but here we are,

minutes. and good news. there's nothing in your way as you make your way into san francisco. back to you at the desk. >> speaking of traffic, we told you earlier about this issue that is going to be happening in the east bay all weekend long, so be prepared for detours are going to go out to ryan curry now, who has more on what is happening in pleasanton. hi, ryan. >> yeah. hi, reggie. good morning. you can see the sign behind me. they are up all around this corridor warning drivers that yes, there's going to be a big closure happening this weekend. and you got to be prepared. that means giving yourself some extra time to be ready for these detours. so here's what it's going to look like this coming weekend. arting 9 p.m. tonight, there will be a closure six 8-80 southbound from the 580 connector down to cuban road. it's about nine miles. that's going to be shut down. so how are you going to get down to the south bay if you need to get down there? well, 880 is going to be the best detour. take 24 580nd then head south on 880. if you're coming from further east, such as tracy, you can take highway 84. that will then reconnect you back to 680 past. all the closures are. it's

the second time in just over a month caltrans is going to be shutting down 680. they tried to do it earlier in the year on the holiday weekends back in january and february, but the rain forced them to postpone it. they are repairing deteriorating road they say will make it safer for drivers once they are finished. closing it down for one weekend saves them time in making these repairs. caltrans says it would take 40 full nighttime closures to finish the job, so instead of doing that, they are just closing it for a weekend. so later on tonight, you can expect chp crews being out here around the 580 connector around koopman road, around 680 starting to close off that area, warn drivers about what's going to be happening and also start pushing traffic elsewhere. so if you are going down the south bay, just give yourself some extra time because some of the traffic in those other areas that i mentioned may be a little bit longer. so you just got to be prepared for that for now, reporting live in pleasanton. ryan curry, abc seven news. really good to know. >> thank you. ryan, we've talked about students using ai to
