on a connecticut road, two fast acting barbers saved a child they saw running towards a busy intersection in east hartford. the little girl was corralled, steps away from the corner. the barbers found the child's mother at a nearby bus stop, and she apparently didn't realize her daughter was gone. >> millions of americans dropped their plastic shopping bags off at big box stores, supposedly to be recycled. but our investigation has led to some stunning revelations. here's abc's matt gutman, our abc news investigation, shining a light for the first time on how some of the plastic bags earmarked for recycling at walmart in the u.s. ended up 9000 miles away in southeast asia. >> it is irresponsible and unethical to be exporting plastic waste to other countries that do not have a recycling infrastructure set up to handle this. the plastic waste trade is part of a complex system that the u.n. says is too often plagued by illegality. as part

of an 18 month investigation, we put trackers into plastic bags earmarked for recycling and dropped them off at 46 major retail stores across the country. a majority of the bags ended up at landfills or incinerators, but three of the 19 trackers dropped off at walmart stores ended up in southeast asia, two of them in malaysia, not far from where pooley pang lives. >> we want to let people who send their waste to malaysia know that we need your help. >> for over a year, walmart said they were willing to talk but never made anyone available for an interview. so we decided to attend a conference where their chief sustainability officer was speaking. >> hi mister coffin, i'm matt gutman with abc news. >> how are you? good. we are doing a story about plastic that was earmarked. plastic bags were earmarked for recycling by walmart. yes. and ended up as plastic waste in indonesia and
