francisco is remembering a legend who made a huge difference in hundreds of thousands of lives. reverend cecil williams, a civil rights pioneer who fought for the poor and hungry. no matter their race or sexual orientation, has died. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. cecil williams, pastor, at his home in san francisco this morning surrounded by family. he was 94. the reverend and his late wife founded the now world famous glide memorial church in the tenderloin. williams last appearance there in fact, was just recently easter sunday. his community outreach programs helped the city's poor and homeless for six decades. san francisco mayor london breed says williams was at the top of the list of black role models. abc seven news reporter j.r stone looks at the pastor's legacy of compassion and fierce advocacy, two things that are critical to us unconditional love and unconditional acceptance. >> and when you got those two

things going for you, you really are out on the cutting edge words to live by. >> from the late pastor cecil williams, who died monday at the age of 94. words that helped glide memorial church grow from less than 50 members in the 1960s to more than 11,000 in recent years. >> talking about unconditional love and that everybody's accept it. that's something that i really wanted to and needed to hear when i got here, and it kept me coming back. his immediately opening up the doors of the sanctuary to women, to poor folks, to sex workers, to black folks, to brown folks, to early queer organizers, on and on. >> and that work, just that door just kept opening wider and wider. >> he fed the hungry, clothe the naked, went to the prisons and provided reentry programs. he stood for peace. he was no chauvinist. he reached out to

the world to let you know if you really want to do something and clear your conscience, come to glide. and he did that with regularity. williams had a long list of supporters, including nancy pelosi, the dalai lama, nelson mandela, singer bono, the obamas and the late comedian robin williams. >> investor warren buffett's late wife was a member of his congregation. buffett raised millions for the church when he started an annual auction, even inviting the highest bidder out to lunch. price tag that went for $3.4 million one year. the glide memorial is known today for giving out more than 500,000 meals a year to those in need. it's that giving love that started with cecil williams lives on today with current glide memorial members. >> one of the main reasons i'm here is because of cecil, and because of the impact he had on me and the programs and everything that goes on here, i just want to be part of it. >> jr stone, abc seven news.

>> and ahead here in about 12 minutes at 1115 we'll bring you more of the tributes coming in from san francisco leaders and even the sports world regarding the death of cecil williams, glide's president says memorial plans are still being arranged for more on any public events and the life and legacy of the reverend cecil williams, just go to abc seven news.com. all right . now to our other top story. those allegations that could profoundly affect death penalty cases in alameda county. the district attorney there says a federal judge is ordering her office to review all death row convictions after they found evidence prosecutors may have excluded jurors based on their race or religion. it centers on the case of a black man sentenced to death. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here with a look at the evidence we're talking about here tonight. tim. >> yeah. dan, the da's office says they found old notes from this case that suggest prosecutors might have systemically prevented black and jewish people from serving as

jurors on death penalty cases in the 1980s and 1990s. the thought behind it was, apparently, those groups of people were seen as more likely to oppose the death penalty. >> this is not about left or right or any kind of politics. this is about ethics. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price announcing monday that her office has been ordered by a us federal district court judge to review all death penalty cases in the east bay county. the order coming after the judge reviewed the case of an oakland man sentenced to death for murder in 1995, prices office discovery notes by prosecutors in that case, which appear to show possible systemic discrimination against black and jewish jurors. >> it would take, oh heavens, if months of months, if not years to be able to get through all of them, san mateo county da steve wagstaff says price and her team have a big task ahead of them. >> price says she's identified 35 cases that need review, a task wagstaff says is about not just those cases, but also the legal system as a whole. >> we count on our juries having

faith that the system is being done in a fair and impartial manner. >> that legal system has oftentimes been far from impartial, says lisa hill, a criminal justice professor at cal state east bay. >> your 17 uh- times more likely to get the death penalty if a black person kills a white person, professor hill says. >> what's happening in alameda county is one example of why some people are opposed to the death penalty. she points to data that shows people of color are disproportionately impacted by death penalty convictions. >> those numbers defy a just this system. it's not a justice system. if you have those numbers. >> da price wasn't able to specify how long going through the 35 cases will take, but legal experts say depending on what's found, the outcomes for some of those cases could change. >> the suggestion is that this jury selection process was so tainted that you may have to give some of these individuals an actual new trial.

>> now, since 2019, california has had a moratorium on the death penalty. however, legal experts point out to me, that doesn't mean it's abolished in the state, as that moratorium could be lifted at any time. dan. >> interesting. all right. tim. thank you. tim johns reporting uh- new at 11 san francisco is planning to ask a judge to toss out lawsuits filed on behalf of teenagers arrested at a skateboarding event last summer. police arrested more than 100 people, many of them teenagers, as they broke up the dolores hill bomb. that's where skateboarders race down the hill near dolores park for teens are suing the city, saying their civil rights were violated when they were detained outside for hours. the city attorney's office says it's trying to get the case dismissed. they told us in a statement, quote, we have to defend the police department's ability to appropriately and legally control a crowd and to maintain public safety. the case heads to a judge next week. we'll keep you updated, and we're following

the story tonight as the supreme court grapples with a challenge that will affect the bay area. today, the court heard arguments in a major case on homelessness. the lawsuit centers on a small town in oregon trying to ticket people for sleeping on the streets. the supreme court must decide whether cities can punish people for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go. the ninth circuit court of appeals in san francisco says that amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. some conservative justices seem skeptical about that argument today, questioning whether the high court should get involved in city policies. that's what leaders in san francisco are worried about. >> from our perspective, you know, we think cities like san francisco, we need a bit more flexibility to address the crisis on our streets. >> homeless advocates in the city argue more freedom to sweep encampments isn't a solution. a man who is unhoused in san francisco says he doesn't want to be on the streets, but he

doesn't feel he has a choice. >> try as hard as possible, you know, to find some shelter. but the shelters that they have in the city, they're not too good. i think it should concern everybody, whether you're homeless or not. >> the supreme court is expected to make a decision by the end of june. all right, let's shift gears here for a moment. talk about the weather, warm for some in the areas around the bay area today and coastal spots as well. but changes are coming. abc seven news meteorologist hannah patel is here now with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. >> yeah. and dan, today the temperatures dropped off along the coast. we're going to start to notice the cooling even in our inland areas. here's a live view from pier 39 looking at alcatraz. and you can see the marine layer is just hovering right there. it's about 2000ft deep already has made its push into santa rosa visibility. right now, five miles and a half moon bay. so be careful tomorrow morning. here's a look at your day planner, gray and drizzly to

p-g-and-e's use of ratepayer dollars to pay for what one state senator calls political commercials, failed to pass in sacramento today, p-g-and-e's says the commercials are educational, and they've been approved by the public utilities commission. tonight marks the beginning of passover for jewish people around the world, and leaders at chabad house in san jose invited community members to join them for a passover seder. they came to enjoy the feast that marks the holiday, considered a symbol of freedom. but there was a somber note to the festivities. >> as our hearts are in israel, our hearts are with our brothers and sisters, and we are praying for them. >> for the full release, each person at the seder tonight is celebrating a hostage who has been taken in the conflict with hamas. with those people in mind , security has been stepped up at the center ever since the war began. meantime, in berkeley, pro-palestinian protesters are escalating their demonstrations

berkeley. today there are tents on the steps leading to sproul hall. protesters are calling on the university to divest from corporations involved with the israel-hamas conflict, and they are asking for better protection for palestinian, arab and muslim students. the demonstrators say they have no plans to leave until their demands are met. similar demonstrations are happening at many east coast universities as well. new at 11 more tributes pouring in tonight as the world remembers legendary san francisco reverend cecil williams. a san francisco supervisor, matt dorsey, posted on x, quote, all of us fighting for recovery from addiction, lgbtq plus equality, hiv, aids services, human dignity or god's grace stand on the shoulders of giants. and no giant stood taller than cecil williams. supervisor matt dorsey, salesforce ceo marc benioff calls williams a true legend, saying, quote, he taught us that

we can and must be better. his impact on our lives and our city is immeasurable. thank you, cecil for everything. may the 1st who brings peace bring peace to all and finally, a tribute at oracle park tonight with the reverend's photo on the big screen before the giants game. as you can see there. so many people remembering cecil williams for his kindness and generosity. he died at the age of 94. testimony will continue tomorrow in the hush money trial of former president donald trump. the former publisher of the national enquirer will be back on the witness stand. prosecutors say david pecker schemed with trump's former fixer, michael cohen, to influence the election by concealing negative information about trump. the former president is accused of arranging a $130,000 payment to adult film actress stormy daniels to keep her from revealing their alleged affair. right before the 2016 election. trump has denied the affair and

any wrongdoing. happening tomorrow a potentially unprecedented vote on tiktok's future. the senate is expected to pass a bill to ban the social app in the u.s. if its chinese owners don't sell. it will be the first time congress has passed a law aimed at shutting down a social media platform. but as abc news reporter tim pulliam explains, tiktok's time isn't up yet. >> today i'm saying my final goodbye to tiktok. >> the clock is ticking for viral social media app tiktok. over the weekend, house lawmakers passing a bill that could ban the popular app from the u.s. if the chinese owner, bytedance, doesn't sell within a year. >> the two options are sell to a us owner or cease operating in the us. >> the potential measure is lumped into a $95 billion foreign aid package. top intelligence leaders are concerned user data on the app could become compromised. the bill receiving bipartisan support. for some tiktok creators, the app has been a

launching pad for lucrative businesses. >> i'm happier than i have ever been, and it is because this app has opened the door for me to figure out how i can make a difference in the world. >> a tiktok spokesperson calling the action unfortunate, but telling abc news the bill would trample the free speech rights of 170 million americans, devastate 7 million businesses and shutter a platform that contributes $24 billion to the us economy annually. if it does get banned, some security experts say app stores would no longer offer the app or provide updates. >> i don't think it's going to pass first amendment scrutiny because i think there are less restrictive alternatives. we could have made it a crime to transfer americans data to an adversarial foreign nation or foreign state interference. >> the senate expected to vote on the package tomorrow. president biden signaled that he would sign the bill if it's approved by the senate. tiktok has vowed to fight this in court. tim pulliam abc news, los angeles.

>> and quite the treat. the little babies. >> i'll tell you what's really a treat. is this gorgeous weather we had all weekend today. but sandy is here. changes coming. >> yeah, absolutely. dan, we're going to go with cooler days okay. it already started today at theeach. everyone's going gog to be most noticeableit's inland. so let's look at the cool pattern. today's high temperatures. just a sampling. we got up to 83 degrs in concord and in san jose both areas going down concord by 12 degrees, san jose by 14, santa rosa from 78 to 66. so oakland down two degrees. you're definitely going to feel it. and this is why we're experiencing the cooler days ahead. there's a trough of low pressure that is developing over the pacific. there's another low that is moving towards northern california. and so the combination of the two of them are going to keep that marine layer locked in. right now it is about 2000ft deep. it has pushed into parts of the north bay, which is why it cooled off. so
