>> say it bad. everybody's they bad. >> tonight a community gathers in prayer and in grief. baltimore's mayor joins neighbors and the loved ones of victims. tonight, six people are presumed dead after the sudden bridge collapse. now, 24 hours later, we are learning new details about those victims friends, immigrants, fathers. good evening. i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. >> thank you for joining us. the video showing the moments of that collapse are still so hard to believe and hard to fathom just how something like that could happen so quickly. >> so let's take a live look from baltimore tonight and the current state of the francis scott key bridge. >> two people were rescued, but recovery efforts for the six victims now resume in four hours. at daybreak, all of it happened here on one of the city's three main connectors, linking north baltimore to the rest of the city.

>> to give you a better idea, this view from google earth shows the before and then the after images on the bridges central span. >> the bridge was built in the 1970s, and the coast guard says the ship's pilots gave a mayday warning shortly before, which sprung everyone into action, also meaning this could have been much worse in terms of loss of life. >> i wish we had different news, and i wish we had different results. >> recovery efforts for six people have been put on hold overnight after crews searched by land, sea and air for 18 hours. >> today we are going to put the same assets now just to make sure that we can give these families closure. they were people who were husbands and sons and fathers. >> it was 130 this morning, local time, when officials say a container ship lost power as it was leaving baltimore and crashed into the bridge. video shows the ship hitting a support column. the lights go out as the entire span suddenly collapses. no drivers were traveling on the

span at the time, but there were construction vehicles and workers on it. >> the whole bridge just fell down. start started. whoever, everybody, the whole bridge just collapsed. >> jesus campos says he knows some of the construction team, so that was really hard. jesus says, we are colleagues from work and friends. the bridge is heavily traveled, with an estimated 30,000 vehicles crossing it each day. it's been a landmark for decades, opening in 1977. >> my neighbor called me my husband and wake him up and said that the key bridge is gone. and my husband said, what do you mean it's gone? >> about 30 million tonnes of cargo passed through the bridge last year. it's the entryway to the largest port in the u.s. for cars and light trucks, and one of america's largest hubs for coal shipments. >> it's one of the most important elements for the economy in the northeast. i've directed my team to move heaven and earth, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge. as soon as humanly possible. >> now, the fbi suggests that a preliminary review of the scene

suggests the crash was just a terrible accident. but a full investigation by the national transportation safety board is now underway to figure out exactly what happened, and it's easy to draw the comparison with so much of the bay area defined by our bridges. >> the port of oakland is the ninth busiest port in the country, with cargo ships going in and out of the bay daily. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is here in studio. he spoke with a civil engineer about the concern level here in the bay area j.r. >> i often drive by some of the maintenance crews on our bridges late at night after stories to think that the maintenance crews in baltimore were working hard overnight on that key bridge when that collapse happened. it just breaks your heart. you hope that something like that does not happen here. seeing a cargo ship cruise through the san francisco bay is nothing new. but after seeing what happened in baltimore, it certainly makes you think about a worst case scenario here in the bay. a sort of could that happen here? >> from what we know so far, it is very, very unlikely. in my

opinion. >> hassan bastani is professor emeritus at uc berkeley who has studied bridges like the golden gate and bay bridge for 52 years to understand his belief about what could happen here, it's important to get his take on what happened in baltimore. he's very surprised that the key bridge there did not have what are called dolphins in this area where the collision occurred. those are often steel cylinders with concrete in them built from the bottom of the sea and into the air because, like, i, you know, my fingers, those dolphins look like this. >> if my pier is in between it like this. okay, one dolphin face, but the other ones are still there. you know, the bay bridge does not use dolphins. >> astani says it's much more shallow here, and those protections are unlikely to be needed. officials say the golden gate bridge has the most robust ship collision protection of any bridge on the west coast. the north and south towers are built with extra reinforcement. >> the south tower is protected

by a concrete fender ring. the tower itself is anchored to bedrock below the water and this concrete fender ring protects the entire south tower pier. it is 27ft thick at the bottom and extends 40ft down. >> the north tower is in shallow water and not susceptible to collision because of that, according to officials. but while aston doesn't believe a collision is likely here in the bay area, he'd like for the state of california to do more to ensure that i think it should at least initiate this study with caltrans and harbors here and l.a. and other places to look at all bridges that that big ships can pass and see if they need protection. >> the second layer, major protection of dolphins and do it. we have the money. >> the professor believes that a study of the ten busiest harbors in the state could really help us get a better idea, if anything additional is needed,

you'll find most of the impacts as the rainfall begins to increase in coverage and in intensity. now the winds are going to come up, but not terribly strong. we'll call it breezy 26 miles an hour tomorrow afternoon along the coast, stronger over the hills, picking up a little bit late tomorrow night, going into early thursday. it is one tomorrow. spotty morning showers briefly heavy at night, and it is going to be breezy at times, as i mentioned. and as we look at our rain chances, that's not the only system i'm tracking. we do have a stronger storm coming our way friday that will continue into the first part of your weekend. i'll be back with that timeline as well. coming right up, dan. >> okay, sandy, thanks very much. new at 11, the city of sacramento is officially declaring itself a sanctuary city for those who identify as transgender. the city council just passed the resolution tonight with a unanimous vote. this move upholds the rights of transgender people in the city. no city resources will be used to detain or investigate anyone, even from out of state, who may be seeking gender affirming care

. advocacy groups say more than 20 american states currently ban this kind of care. a uc berkeley professor has ended his protest over what he says was the university's lack of response to antisemetic ism on campus. ron hassner spent two weeks in his office in order to get a response, and he says he was successful and the university agreed to his requests. hassner, eight, slept and even held classes in the cramped space during his sit in. he says he left his office last thursday and wrote a lengthy letter to his students. >> he's running for president as an independent in 2024, and now robert f kennedy jr is naming his running mate, lawyer and oakland native nicole shanahan. >> it isn't just about policing, it is about the school to prison pipeline. it is about a broken and dismally functioning infrastructure. it is about recidivism that we have not taken the right approach to. >> kennedy made the announcement at a rally in oakland today.

shanahan spoke of her childhood there, as well as the issues that drive her today climate change, chronic disease and criminal justice reform. shanahan attended saint mary's high in berkeley and law school at santa clara. she was married to google co-founder sergey brin. the two divorced in 2022, and we have an update now on the race for california's 16th congressional district, a razor thin margin continues to separate santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and assemblyman evan low. >> you can see it here as of the latest update tonight. simitian now leads by two votes. it's that close. they're vying to face former san jose mayor sam liccardo in november's general election, in the district that covers parts of san mateo and santa clara counties and areas of the santa cruz mountains, as well the states of marijuana. >> with san francisco canceling its official 420 event at hippie hill, could the larger california cannabis industry be showing signs of trouble? plus, those lucky six numbers worth more than $1 billion? >> if someone guessed right and

in san francisco this year, organizers are canceling the official event at hippie hill and as abc seven news reporter tim jonze explains, it's a small sign of what's going on with california's larger cannabis economy. >> one of san francisco's most popular events is officially going up in smoke this year, the city announcing tuesday that its annual 420 event at hippie hill next month has been canceled. >> we wanted to support, you know, this, this, this amazing event that celebrates plant medicine. >> alex aquino is the event's organizer. he says the cancellation is because of two main factors. one is a lack of sponsor money. aquino tells me many in the cannabis industry are struggling with much of their business being undercut by non-licensed vendors. >> please support these brands that are sponsoring us. go to the local shops and buy. >> on top of the lack of sponsorship money, san francisco officials say city budget cuts

were also a factor. >> it usually costs about $40,000 and the city is in a budget crunch, so we just couldn't pay to staff it this year. >> the city's recreation and park department says instead of the 420 event, it will host volleyball and kickball tournaments at the site. >> can people still go to the park and sit down and celebrate in the way they know how? sure. but they can do that in any park. there's not going to be anything special about coming all the way to hippie hill for 20 is cancellation is a disappointment to thousands across the bay area, aquino says. >> for many, it's a part of the city's rich culture, just us as promoters and natives here that live in san francisco, that love these cultural events. >> and we need to support them all across the board. >> that's why, he says he and his team are already planning for next year, hoping to bring back the celebration bigger than ever before. >> there's a lot of work that goes into these things and a lot of a lot of people, not a patrons, don't understand the capacity of throwing these kinds

of events in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> new tonight we have a winner. someone hit the mega millions jackpot. the person with a lucky ticket sold in new jersey is now $1.3 billion richer, or about 537 million if they choose the lump sum, which the experts say is the way to go. here were the winning numbers to see if you want something smaller. the prize money now drops back down to $20 million. not to worry. tomorrow night's powerball jackpot is now an estimated 865 million bucks. >> new developments on a landslide that is slowly getting worse. the recent rain first formed a crack earlier this month on mountain charley road, but now you can see what it looks like. and as abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez explains, neighbors are stuck with the worsening damage. >> pictures do not capture the devastation of this. it's just it's incredible. >> this landslide in the santa cruz mountains is still moving. residents are having to hike

home on mountain charley road. >> this is our route to our elementary school, to our community, to our grocery store, to everything. >> the landslide has really impacted two roads. this is a driveway that leads up to five homes. mountain charley road leads to at least 80 homes. >> we have some elderly. we have some mobility issue folks, so right now we can't get propane in. you can't get any vehicles in. >> on tuesday, santa cruz public works officials held one of several virtual meetings to address the moving problem. first, cracks on the road were noted on february 26th. three days later, the county closed the road in march. you can see the significant and dramatic shift of land. >> as of last week, it was still moving over a foot vertically per week and approximately two feet horizontally. >> because the land is still moving, county officials say assessment will take time. the director of community development and infrastructure says repair costs from storm damage in 2023 has tapped all their resources.

>> so at this point, it's difficult to secure additional financing, that doesn't mean we won't be able to finance future improvements that just in the short time firm, our hands are rather tied. >> on tuesday, the county secured $30,000 to start on geotechnical work. the hope is that data will lead to a design cost estimate and define finance needs, the county says. a timeline of repairs could take 1 to 3 years, like the school bus is down the road, we can't get to the school bus, you know, just little things. >> but they all together. they're your home. they're your community. they're how you're connected. and, and that over time is going to be really, really hard. >> residents say this active situation is critical. >> we kind of rotate charlotte and i in terms of just feeling like this feels hopeless and how can we survive in los gatos? >> lauren martinez abc seven news with easter this weekend, animal groups have some advice to those thinking about maybe

going to console ourselves with chocolate bunnies. >> well, you know what? i'm working on it, dan. and i'm going to try to get that rain out of here before all the easter plans begin. but you can still enjoy chocolate bunnies with peanut butter. that sounds good. let me show you what you can expect. we are back to winter in the bay area. it's going to be unsettled the next four days. no, it's not going to rain all day long nonstop, but we're talking about periods of rain, gusty winds and a thunder chance. that thunder chance is coming friday night into saturday. so in the sierra for this first storm. 11 a.m. tomorrow until 11 a.m. thursday, we are talking about a winter storm warning up to two feet for the peaks. gusts to 45 miles an hour. so watch out. travel could be difficult and if you are heading up to tahoe, i do want to show you the seven day forecast showers tomorrow afternoon evening, a chance on thursday. certainly snow and wind friday. more snow saturday. this is going to be the toughest travel time period and a few snow flurries on sunday before it brightens up and you've got good looking weather for spring

skiing. all right. the storms are still lined up in the pacific, so we are expecting this next system to come in tomorrow. it will bring us initially spotty showers and then heavier rain as we head towards the evening on live doppler seven. we have a few clouds around right now, 40s and 50s on your temperatures. as we take a look at a live picture from our emeryville camera, a beautiful view tomorrow morning. showers heavier in the evening, friday, saturday as stronger storms coming your way and the weather improves. by the time we head towards easter first thing in the morning, temperatures will start out in the 40s and the 50s. tomorrow afternoon. it's a cooler day, 50s and 60s. have your rain gear handy as the rain will start to spread for the afternoon hours. it's a level one, a spotty morning, showers, briefly heavy at night and breezy at times. we're going to time this out for you at 930. the north bay is seeing showers, but there will be drizzle along the coastline by 2 p.m. you're seeing those spotty showers in other parts of the bay area, and at 7:00, the rainfall intensity picks up. it will certainly provide more coverage across the

region, so the afternoon evening commute could be a little bit slow going. 11 p.m. you're still seeing those downpours. and then thursday around noontime, you're seeing those scattered showers going into about 230 in the afternoon. and then by 11 p.m. it's just really winding down. so our rainfall projections, anywhere from about 700 in san jose to a 6/10 in ukiah, higher totals up to the north. if you're looking ahead to the holiday weekend, here's your stronger storm friday. going into saturday with more powder in the mountains. really, the showers start to move on out by sunday morning as that system moves south. but watch the wraparound moisture. that's what i'm concerned about. this model wants to hang on to a few showers, so stay tuned. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. showers. breezy. tomorrow they linger on thursday. both level one wet and windy and cooler. level two for friday, and then a one with a chance of thunderstorms saturday. quieter for easter and saturday. quieter for easter and then we warm it up monday mr. clean magic eraser powers through tough messes.
