in the foothills of the sierra, the attack killing the 21 year old and leaving the 18 year old with serious injuries. tonight we're hearing from a family member and friends about these boys and how they fought for their lives. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz, and the words we read from their family today, these two brothers were as close as any two brothers could be. >> 21 year old talon, on the left here, was killed after

trying to fight the lion back away from his 18 year old brother, wyatt. we're getting more details of their deadly encounter tonight. >> they were out exploring in the woods on saturday in a rural area of el dorado county, about a half an hour east of auburn. tonight, abc seven news reporter j.r. stone heard from friends and family members jr ama dan, there have been so many questions, both online and in the community as to how this attack happened and why it happened. >> today. the family put out this thorough statement attempting to answer some of those questions. this as they're trying to move forward with the loss of a son. this is 21 year old talon brooks, killed saturday afternoon by a mountain lion in el dorado county. >> i was shocked, honestly. it's really sad. and he was just a really just honest, genuine guy. super nice, very charismatic. we were always goofing with each other and he just had a very, just positive outlook on life, like just a very good person, very good friend. >> emma hutchinson went to high

school with talon and his younger brother wyatt, who was also attacked by the lion as the two were searching for deer antler sheds, taylor knew a ton of people and everybody you know that i've talked to so far when i've told them, oh, have you heard this? >> they've just been like, oh my god, that's awful. that is terrible. because, you know, all my friends and even people who weren't such good friends with him knew him and knew what he was. and he's just a really great person in a statement released monday afternoon by the el dorado sheriff's office, the family described the moment when the 90 pound mountain lion came up along the dirt road where wyatt and talon were walking, saying they raised their hands in the air to appear larger, yelled at the lion and wyatt even threw his backpack at the lion. >> all in an attempt to scare the lion away. family says. the lion then immediately charged. wyatt bit down on his face and took him to the ground. wyatt was able to eventually get on top of the lion as talon beat on it and yelled at it, but the lion broke free, charged, and

bit talon in the throat. wyatt was unable to get the lion to release his grip and soon called 911. on my social media pages, there were hundreds of comments, some questioning why the two did not have firearms. family members saying saturday was also the opening day of junior turkey hunting season. so they did not take any firearms with them so as to not draw any attention from the california department of fish and wildlife. by the time authorities got to talon, he was no longer alive. wyatt is now recovering after multiple surgeries. a user using his account responds to someone on my tiktok page who said two grown men could have easily scared the mountain lion. why it responded, writing we tried to scare it and it did not care. learn your facts before you speak on it. crews were able to eventually track and kill the lion around 100 yards from where talons body was recovered and online. i have spoken with family members and friends about what happened. everyone is just

heartbroken. both these young men were avid fishermen and hunters. if you'd like to see the full account of what their family says happened, you can go to our website, abc seven news.com j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> all right, j.r, thank you so much. we now turn to a police pursuit that ended this evening with a flipped vehicle and four arrests in oakland. chp took over the pursuit of this lexus after the robbing of a lululemon in napa. the suspects were followed through east bay streets and freeways. they crashed the car near lakeshore and beacon and hit one other car. as you see, piles of clothes, mostly leggings, ended up in the road on both sides of the crash, there were four people in the car, none injured. all of them are now in police custody. crews cleaned up the aftermath and right here you see a tow truck. flip the car back over. >> let's move now to the surprise search warrants carried out at the homes of sean diddy combs. today, federal agents raided the musician and producer's mansions in la and

miami amid an ongoing sex trafficking investigation. it's a case that has been slowly building for months. >> reporter sophie flay from our sister station in los angeles, has the latest tonight. >> homeland security agents surrounding sean diddy combs home in holmby hills today. >> i didn't even know he lived here, to be honest, i didn't even know that until now. i heard about this raiding the mansion as part of a federal investigation into sex trafficking, according to law enforcement being led out by the southern district of new york, a similar raid seen at his home in florida on exclusive star island, located in biscayne bay, known for its star studded residents over the years like shaquille o'neal and gloria estefan. >> this comes as diddy faces legal troubles, including a lawsuit filed by ex-girlfriend singer cassie accusing him of sex trafficking and sexual assault. diddy has denied those claims. this raid, bringing tons of people to the wealthy neighborhood, even busses full of tourists. >> it's crazy. i don't i don't know what to think right now. >> neighbors describing a lot of wild late night parties at

it it's still breezy out there, nowhere near the gusts of 40 to 50 miles an hour. we saw in the last 24 hours for some of our strongest winds. right now it is about 21 miles an hour in san francisco. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow morning. mostly cloudy temperatures in the 40s. we are looking at plenty of sun for the afternoon soon and milder weather upper 50s to the upper 60s. it will be breezy at the coast, but not as windy as today. increasing clouds later on in the evening. and check out what's coming our way. mid to late in the week. we are talking about rainfall chances increasing. i'll be back with a look at that timeline coming right up ama. >> all right, thank you sandhya. there are new developments tonight in the long running series of issues with the oil refineries in the city of martinez. neighbors, health inspectors and county leaders have all called for a deeper look into the potentially dangerous impacts for the city. let's get to abc seven news reporter tim johns. >> a concerned crowd packed to

school gymnasium in martinez monday night. the event, hosted by east bay congressman mark desaulnier. the topic of discussion the areas, refineries and the effect, their numerous flaring and other chemical release events are having on public health. >> we're not having it anymore. >> like we want to know what is going on at the refinery. is it safe? are they going to fix their problems, and are we going to be able to breathe clean air? >> heidi taylor is with a group called healthy martinez. she tells me it was important for her to be at monday's town hall because of the increasing frequency of the release events at the refineries. >> on any given day, i could walk out of my door and i smell gasoline or i smell rotten eggs, and we're constantly left wondering, what is that? >> late last year, a surprise inspection of the martinez refining company was carried out by representatives from contra costa health and the bay area air quality management district. there were at least 46 release incidents reported by the company in 2023. >> it's almost monthly that we have either a flaring event or

some other type of release that's very concerning to help stop the problem, congressman desaulnier says he wants several steps taken, one being more air monitors set up to detect when release events are occurring, and a second being harsher punishments for big corporations . >> used to be that if you ran your business in a way that was dangerous to your workers in the public, you could be indicted and convicted. you still could be. >> but it's much harder because of people's health on the line. these residents say they won't stop fighting. we've been at this for 16 months and we are determined to hold pbf or martinez refining company accountable, and we're not going to stop. pbf energy bought the refinery from shell back in 2020. we reached out to the company and are waiting for a reply. in martinez, tim johns abc seven news. >> a new law taking effect next week could shake up local economies all across california. >> you may have heard of the incoming wage boost for fast food workers a week from today, their pay will go up to $20 an hour, so 25% jump from the

state's current $16 minimum wage. >> meantime, the federal minimum wage is 7.25 an hour. 20 states use that wage, which hasn't changed since 2009. >> hundreds of thousands of fast food workers from california will see their minimum wage go up, but business owners say costs will also increase for them and their customers. >> that's going to impact us by an increase of $470,000 annually across those ten stores. it means that we have to raise prices, which we don't want to do. some business owners are considering layoffs and closing some locations to save on costs. >> however, many people believe the wage hike will offer a better standard of living and work conditions for fast food employees. the minimum wage increase goes into effect april 1st. >> san francisco's oldest lgbtq bar is set to reopen soon, and it's in a brand new location. the stud will open its new doors at folsom and seventh street on saturday, april 20th. the owners promise more details are coming soon, but that new location is

for more than 20 years ago. police have now arrested the teacher for the rape and sexual assault of a student. police say there were multiple assaults between 2002 and 2003, when the suspect taught at lee high school. >> he also worked as a track and field and football coach at los gatos high school. >> this investigation began about two and a half weeks ago, after a former student came forward. police arrested the teacher friday. the campbell union high school district has placed the teacher on administrative leave, and the superintendent says the district is actively working with investigators now. >> that all comes as another san jose teacher has been arrested and booked on charges of molesting a student at ace empower academy. it runs from fifth through eighth grades, the school administrators reported. the teacher, after finding inappropriate notes on campus in mid-december. police say the teacher also sent inappropriate texts to the student. >> it is very traumatic. it is scary and it is confusing, especially when you're dealing

with someone who is a person of trust, someone you look up to. so we do want to let all survivors know that it is okay to come forward. >> the teacher claims there was never any physical contact. he has resigned and is no longer on campus. school officials tell abc seven news they are very concerned about this inappropriate contact and take allegations very seriously. tomorrow though, the supreme court will hear arguments about the abortion pill called mifepristone. >> they're trying to decide whether or not the fda lawfully relaxed restrictions to make it easier to obtain the drug. now, this marks the first big abortion case since the roe v wade decision was overturned. medication based abortions make up more than half of all abortions in the nation. the supreme court will likely not announce its ruling until later in the spring. florida will ban social media accounts for most children under a law signed today by republican governor ron desantis, 14 and 15 year olds will only be allowed to be on

social media with a parent's permission, and children under 14 won't be allowed accounts at all. lawmakers behind the bill say it's about children's mental health and protecting them from online predators. it is likely to be decided in court with first amendment legal challenges expected. >> not too many people see their names trending online. the way kiki often just took over twitter. her 41 point performance against iowa state last night is fueling what is part of a larger rise in women's college basketball, all thanks to new stars and broken records. an average of 476,000 viewers tuned in to regular season games on espn and abc. it makes the most watched regular season for women's college hoops in 25 years. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has more on the tournament now in full swing >> electric. thrilling and incredible are the words fans are using to describe stanford's ncaa tournament win on sunday. >> probably the most exciting

on our weather. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is back with. rain? yeah, rain. >> i love the downer mood. come on. dan. all right, dan and emma, we do have some rain coming, but i'm going to give you a day to enjoy some sunshine tomorrow. how's that sound? where are the cheers? all right, let's take a look at a live picture from our emeryville camera. they're done with this. uh. a lovely view of san francisco, but it's a shaky view. mount diablo right now, 27 mile an hour. winds onshore winds. big rock ridge, 25 miles an hour. it is going to remain breezy tonight and heading into tomorrow morning, mainly along the coast. elsewhere, the winds will subside as we head into tomorrow afternoon. once again, those winds will pick up near the coastline and over the higher terrain. so when you look at live doppler seven, you will notice that wind flow is out of the northwest. what's happening is area of high pressure is building in. and as that ridge is building in, the wind is flowing around that area of high pressure. out of that northwesterly direction. and when it's coming off, that cool

start out on the cool side tomorrow afternoon. sunshine for everyone. upper 50s to the upper 60s. pretty nice looking day and then a level one storm comes in for your wednesday. we're looking at scattered showers briefly heavy at night, breezy at times. so first thing in the morning on wednesday. it's very spotty. 5 to 8 a.m. and then the showers come in by 3 p.m. you start to notice more coverage by 9 p.m. we are seeing some areas of moderate to heavy rain and then really scattered showers continuing into early thursday before this system winds down. so rainfall projections have gone up in the north bay up to 8/10 of an inch in santa rosa by thursday morning, but only a few hundredths in the southern part of our viewing area. this is going to mean snow for the mountains. the sierra is already above 100% of average. we're talking 34in at kirkwood, 31 at donner. by sunday night, tahoe city, 29in accuweather, 70 forecasts a sunnier and milder tomorrow. no cheers from dan and
