abc tonight. welcome back. >> we have this surveillance video. it shows the moment a duplex suddenly exploded southeast of salt lake city, spreading debris across a cul de sac. there, searchers combing through the rubble. they found a woman's body. the woman who lived in the other half of the duplex managed to escape with minor injuries, and investigators are not yet saying what caused the blast. >> the l.a. dodgers trip to south korea for the start of their baseball season is being overshadowed by the firing of their biggest stars interpreter. he worked with shohei ohtani for years, but was let go amid allegations of illegal gambling and theft. >> two two rips one and he gets on top of it this morning, baseball superstar shohei ohtani, fresh off signing his historic $700 million contract last year, is taking a major hit. >> we have some breaking news here on sportscenter. shohei ohtani's interpreter was fired today after questions were raised over $4.5 million in wire

transfers sent from ohtani bank account to a bookmaking operation. >> the dodgers yesterday fired ohtani's longtime friend and interpreter, ippei mizuhara, after he allegedly stole more than $4 million from ohtani to pay off gambling debts. mizuhara allegedly placed wagers with an illegal sportsbook in california. espn reviewed bank information it says shows ohtani's name on two $500,000 payments made last year. >> he said that ohtani had no knowledge of his gaming debts and had not paid the money through the wire transfers. >> a spokesman for ohtani says the baseball star has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities. the controversy dominating sports media, you have to look into it. >> is he placing bets for ohtani and how did he get access to ohtani's millions? >> reporter hours before he was fired, mizuhara was talking to ohtani during the dodgers game in seoul, south korea, adding to ohtani's difficult day a bomb threat. police responding with bomb sniffing dogs after a

face, fearing gangs could target him back. >> we can't retreat, he says. we can't give up the country to the gangs. i've got no choice. despite the violence, there is hope with this family. >> grateful to be together again. >> we're finally reunited with julian, our two year old son, perry russom. >> abc news, washington. >> all right, perry, thank you for that. two more former mississippi law enforcement officers have been sentenced for their parts in the torture of two black men. a judge gave former sheriff's deputy christian dedmon 40 years in prison. ex-deputy daniel opdyke received 17 years. both pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges for bursting into a home last year and torturing the victims. the men were part of a group that called itself the goon squad. two other members were handed hefty sentences tuesday. two more will be sentenced today. >> authorities looking for missing college student riley strain came up empty while searching near a dam on the cumberland river. strain has been missing for nearly two weeks. he was last seen during a

night of drinking in nashville. the search of the river, which runs through the city, followed the discovery of strains. bank card on a river bank. >> a bill that could lead to a ban on tiktok appears to be gaining momentum in the senate, a week after it was approved by the house, senators who received a classified intelligence briefing on tiktok expressed support for the legislation that would require the chinese company that owns the app to sell it or be banned in the u.s. democrats and republicans voiced deep concerns. >> tiktok is a gun aimed at americans, heads the chinese communists are weaponizing information that they are constant, surreptitiously collecting from 170 million americans. >> tiktok is a threat to your data privacy and security and a threat to the american people in the form of chinese communist propaganda. as tiktok urges users to lobby against the bill, senator thom tillis posted audio of a voicemail from a caller threatening to shoot him and cut him up into pieces if tiktok is

doctor who applied five times to be an astronaut and has spent much of the last two years learning how to be a doctor in space. >> it's all about doing medicine without the same ct scans or mris, or operating rooms that you have on earth. and so you got to figure out how to do more with less. and as more billionaires and sci fi actors get to visit the final frontier, pretty soon nasa plans to send its first people to the moon in more than 50 years and just prepare yourself. >> it sounds a little different this time. >> instead of going to the equator of the moon, we're going to go to the south pole of the moon. we're going to have to go to this huge crater that's the size of d.c. and explore it in the dark, are you sure i can't join that meeting over zoom? by the way, one astronaut from a previous year said that on his application, he was asked to compose either a tweet limerick or a haiku. so, you know, we could do that. >> what if we compose a news report? any former journalists make the cut? yeah.
