1:50 am
good news, danny. >> yeah. the good news is we're talking about it, which means we know about it. and therefore, theoretically, on the off chance that it actually happens, we can prepare for it. >> something you don't like. the looks of. >> we discovered a very large comet. oh good for you. >> the plot to many science fiction movies might actually be happening. not for sure, but we definitely should be tracking this object. doctor dante lauretta is referring to a 4.5 billion year old asteroid named bennu. it's as tall as this building. it's you. that's right, the empire state building. and apparently could collide with the earth in the year 2182 and probably change life as we know it now. technically there's only a 0.05% chance of that happening, but we still have to prepare for that chance. right. it's important to understand this hazard in general and what we might be able to do when an asteroid ultimately is going to collide with the earth, because it's happened many times before
1:51 am
throughout geologic history. the good news is scientists have been working on one of the solutions here, sending something into space to deter an asteroid. in october of 2022, when nasa successfully used its mission called dart, to alter the trajectory of an asteroid with a spacecraft. but. there's also the option of pinpointing where it might hit and evacuating that area, which would require a level of accuracy we don't have yet. but the people of the year 2135 will, because that's when bennu will fly between the earth and the moon. well, thank god for that. at least we know nasa has successfully made contact with this asteroid before. in september, the osiris rex spacecraft returned from a seven year mission of actually collecting samples from bennu, and doctor lauretta says the findings could help answer the big question how in the heck we got life on this planet? >> that's the biggest mystery in
1:52 am
science, right now. and i think this asteroid and the samples we brought home hold the clues. >> so for the record, bennu actually has come close to earth a couple times since we first discovered it in 1999. and if you'd like to learn more, doctor loretta's book about this experience, which is called the asteroid hunter, dropped this week. >> if you want to learn about this, i do want to learn about this .05. that sounds very slim, but i feel like normally it's like there's a .0002 chance. so this feels a little higher than normal. yeah. it's not zero, not zero. >> so we might as well prepare for it. like the movie don't look up is alluding to, right? >> i say we recruit a misfit team of deep oil drillers, teach them how to be astronauts, slow down, send them to space and blow this thing up. >> only if bruce willis is involved. >> i'm john morgan of morgan and morgan. with so many me south helium lawyers on television, how do you choose the right firm for you and your family? our goal is to get you as much as
