heard in the moments leading to the collision. also, the latest on a pair of manhunts, including the search for an accused cop killer in new mexico and 173 years of tradition, continues the turnout today for san francisco's saint patrick's celebration. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> investigators are trying to determine what led a driver to veer off the road and into a crowded san francisco bus stop. two people are dead as a result of that crash, and three others, including that driver, are in the hospital right now. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm karina nova. that crash happened at around noon in the area of west portal and willow street. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked with witnesses who were nearby when that crash took place. cornell, what do we know about this devastating crash this afternoon? >> yeah. hi, karina. we also just spoke with the mayor who

was at the scene just about three hours after it happened. streets here in west portal remain closed for this police investigation, which happened at a bus stop near the west portal muni station. and it is still unclear today what caused the driver of an suv to crash into the bus stop where people were waiting. >> well, i can tell you what happened was a real tragedy. >> mayor london breed, speaking at the scene of a horrific crash at a bus stop on yolo street and lennox way car going eastbound on yola, uh- struck a bus shelter which had four people, two adults and two children. the fire chief says two people were killed, an adult and a child. >> obviously, there are multiple calls to 911, so police and fire worked together to treat all of the victims, to assess and treat them. and unfortunately, two were really, really critically injured and there was no hope

for them. >> three people were taken to the hospital, including the driver of this suv which struck the bus shelter. at this point, it's unclear how the collision happened. >> we don't know if the driver had a medical emergency. that is all under investigation on the impact of the crash was so intense it could be heard a half block away. >> we heard a really loud crash and i thought it was two trains colliding, and then a bunch of people in the restaurant went out and looked and said, not to go out there ■because it was, really gory. >> the crash happening just feet from the entrance of the muni west portal station, which was busy on saturday afternoon. >> we have a lot of shaken up people, including one of our muni drivers and other people who who saw this situation and saw people trying to save their lives. >> the mayor would not confirm if the two victims were related.

we do know that three people are in the hospital, two in critical condition. the mayor did tell us that counselors from the city's behavior health department will be in this neighborhood for the next couple of days, talking with talking with people who may have experienced some trauma. today, the muni west portal station remains closed. we're live in san francisco. cornell, bernard, abc seven news, cornell. >> thanks for that update. a standoff with a murder suspect that lasted much of the day in new jersey is now over. his arrest comes after a multi-state crime spree and three killings. police say it all began this morning in the philadelphia suburbs. they say 26 year-old andre gordon showed up at a home in a stolen car. they say once inside, he shot and killed his step mother and 13 year old sister. >> there were three other individuals at the residence, including a minor inside the home, who were able to hide and avoid being shot by gordon as he went through the house searching for them.

>> police say after that shooting, gordon went to another home and killed the mother of his two children. he allegedly stole another car before barricading himself in the new jersey home. officials say they don't yet know the motive for any of the murders. to new mexico now and to the hunt for a man wanted for what police call a cold blooded killing. a state police officer shot and killed. now, authorities say the suspect is connected to the death of a south carolina woman. abc's melissa don has the latest on that case. >> two deaths, more than a thousand miles away, now linked in new mexico state police officer justin hare was responding to a call around 5 a.m. friday morning to help the driver of a white bmw with a flat tire. law enforcement says when hare parked behind the disabled vehicle on the shoulder of interstate 40, the driver approached and without warning, shot hare as he sat in his patrol car. the suspect, identified as jeremy smith, then allegedly went around to the other side of the car and shot hare again, then allegedly

pushed the officer onto the passenger seat and drove away in the police car before crashing it. >> the last words officer hare uttered on this earth was to offer help to a man who was about to kill him, smith is from marion county, south carolina, but police say he has ties to new mexico. >> the bmw he had been driving belonged to a south carolina woman who was found dead late friday. law enforcement officials provided this photo of paramedic phoenicia machado for her family in south carolina, reported her missing on thursday. >> friday morning we received a phone call from new mexico state police letting us know that our missing persons car had been located and was involved in that murder of the officer, authorities shared photos of the 33 year old last seen on foot near i-40 at mile marker 304, and warned people not to approach him, but to call 911 immediately. >> he was last seen wearing a brown hoodie and jacket. >> jeremy smith just a violent person with a long criminal

history that obviously had no regard for anyone. so the message to him is very clear is that we're coming for you. >> smith, who new mexico state police say has an extensive criminal history, is facing multiple charges, including first degree murder and armed robbery. officer hare leaves behind two young children and his girlfriend melissa. an abc news, los angeles. >> a memorial in san francisco today honors the victims of the atlanta spa shootings. they happened three years ago today. eight people were killed. six were of asian descent. the memorial at japantowns hotel kabuki is a call for unity and solidarity. it featured musical performances, mental health speakers, and stories from activists and survivors of anti-asian hate. allies in new york city, la and atlanta also hosting events today called stand together remembering 316a call to action at the state capitol. today, local groups gathered to rally for an end to homelessness. the groups held what they call an art action.

there displaying fence planks, painted messages like prayers and blessings. the 550 planks come from the richmond tiny house village, a youth emergency housing project. >> i've seen people lose their housing because they didn't get mental health support or addiction support, or any kind of medical support even, and they're back on the street. so i think this is tying together what people in the community know on the ground is people that work with the unhoused and the legislators who are up in their offices who may not see what's happening. they get the view. they get the vision, and they put it in practice. as far as the policy. >> a dozen groups were part of this action today, they're calling for better policy making and funding for homeless support services and solutions. saint patrick's day is officially sunday, but they're celebrating in downtown san francisco today. it's the 173rd annual saint patrick's day parade and celebration. crowds of people wearing green and shamrocks filled the streets as the parade went from market and second all

frightening confrontation in the middle of spring break. officers came face to face with an armed 16 year old. they say he pulled out the gun during a fight. no shots were fired, but the teen was taken into custody along with several bags of marijuana. that incident happened just hours after new restrictions took effect that were supposed to make some florida spring break hotspots safer. among the changes, miami beach has installed a midnight curfew and drinking is no longer allowed on the beach or on the streets at night. with spring break comes a new concern over a rise in measles cases in the u.s. the cdc is reporting 58 cases in 17 states, including california, this year. that's the same number of cases as all of 2023. measles is highly contagious. it's spread through the air, and it can be transmitted before you even know you have it. the cdc says the best way to prevent it is through vaccination. >> the majority of measles cases are happening in unvaccinated individuals. a lot of it is

vaccine hesitancy, which unfortunately has increased in some parts of the country since the pandemic, but also the pandemic itself caused delays in routine childhood vaccinations. >> symptoms of the measles include fever, cough, congestion and rashes. it can be fatal in young children, but can also cause long terme complications in people who've been infected. the city of pittsburgh is working to come up with a new vision for the waterfront area, and they want the public's help to decide. today, residents got a first glimpse at the renderings for a reimagined old town business district. ideas included scenic promenades, waterfront dining stores and even an area for water sports. the goal is to connect the marina to the downtown area. it comes as the city just received $3.7 million in grants to make improvements to central harbor park and surrounding parking lots. still ahead, the event that has hundreds of athletes resting up for a big morning in oakland also something special

8-80 from the five 8-80 junction down to koopmann road. that's about nine miles of roadway. the agency shared this video of the work being done today. they say it's on schedule to be complete before the monday morning commute. that's good. day one of the air show at travis air force base is coming to a close. wings over solano wraps up in less than 15 minutes. the navy's blue angels are headlining the event. always great to see, but visitors are also getting to see the air force's f-22 team acrobatics by the wings of blue parachute team and a showcase of other planes, new and old. if you missed today, there's a chance to see it all again tomorrow. gates open at 9 a.m. and francis lawson is here with me to talk about the weather now. what perfect weather for

those, you know, for the construction, which is good. that means they can get it done on time for, you know, the blue angels and the saint patrick's day parades we have going on this weekend. yeah, it's gorgeous in san francisco. >> you can see right behind us. we've got blue skies all around the bay area, so it's going to be another nice day tomorrow. if you do want to watch those blue angels again, live doppler seven. the satellite radar image showing high pressure. this is what's keeping all the clouds away, but it is starting to weaken. so although we'll enjoy gorgeous weather and still lovely temperatures, you'll notice that it's going to start to cool down. in fact, you see a little bit of that fog creeping in from the coast temperatures right now in the 60s and 70s. san francisco 61, oakland 65, hayward 70. san jose 72, san mateo 67. half moon bay cooler at 59. and it is cooler at the beaches because of that sea breeze. you can see those clouds moving in. they're heading towards the golden gate bridge. santa rosa 68. we also have napa at 66 and fairfield, concord, livermore in the low 70s. right

now, winds are still pretty breezy. in fact, in san francisco, gusting up to 30mph. so that is what is helping to cool things down a little bit compared to yesterday. but it is a nice day for the beach. a lot of folks here at the santa cruz beach. so tonight we'll start to see some low clouds, some stratus clouds will make its way back into the bay area starting overnight. and then tomorrow it's still going to be sunny but cooler at the coast as high pressure starts to weaken. next tuesday is spring, the first of spring. it's going to be dry through midweek, and then we have a chance of rain towards the end of the workweek. futurecast model shows you some of those clouds spilling into the bay and making its way down through the south bay and into some of the valleys. but then by the afternoon, lots of sunshine with the northwest breeze keeping those temperatures cooler at the beaches. overnight lows generally in the 40s and 50s. so san francisco 50 will see some mid 40s in parts of the north bay. possible sprinkles over the coast there, but we

won't notice that at all. and tomorrow's temperatures will be just a touch cooler. so we're still going to be above average in many spots. san francisco 65, oakland 68, san jose 73. actually in the north bay. you won't notice much of a change at all temperatures there still in the low 70s and we could see some mid 70s warmest spots. i just want to jump ahead to friday, saturday, sunday. right now our forecast animation shows that we could get some light rain through next weekend, so we'll keep that in mind for you and we'll keep an eye out on it for you. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so a little more fog cooler for saint patrick's day. but overall still a gorgeous day. temperatures come up a little bit on monday and then on tuesday. spring starts wednesday still dry. but notice temperatures start to come down midweek and then we have a chance of rain on friday. we are expecting light rain starting on saturday. it's going to be a level one on our storm impact
